How Did Valley Forge Washington Decide To Stay At Valley...
Pain is to suffer or cause distress. Pain has been consuming me for the past nine months. The war
has a very strong sting in my heart. The past two years of this war has not gone well for practically
for anyone. As for Washington, no one, not even I knew what his position was. His position was
uncertain. I have decided to not re–enlist for these three main reasons which are: the bad conditions
at Valley Forge, the illness and death, and the quality of the clothing.
Howe's army of 18,000 comfortably quartered in Philadelphia. George Washington decided to build
a winter camp (Valley Forge) about 18 miles northwest of Philadelphia. On 1773, the Boston Tea
party was held. 310 streetlights were installed in Boston in 1773. In 1777, George Washington's
army arrives at Valley Forge. Scarlet fever is when women who were crushing hardcore on the
British red coats. Valley Forge is a winter camp about 18 miles northwest of Philadelphia. Desert is
to abandon in a way considered disloyal or treacherous. I am not going to stay at Valley Forge to
fight because I do not like the conditions at camp. " Poor food ... cold water ... nasty cookery ...
starve and freeze," (Waldo 151). Assuming that Washington wanted us to stay and fight, then we
need better circumstances. " My skin and eyes are almost spoil'd with continual smoke," ... Show

Assuming that I stay, I would still have bad circumstances at Valley Forge, I would be ill which
might make me die, and the bad clothing conditions. You and I should not re–enlist because we want
to live and could lose the fight. I would rather survive and die old and happy, seeing your
grandchildren grow up. Not die young and not see your children or grandchildren grow up, and
make your wife a widow and your children heart broken that they won't have a dad

Lena Dunham Analysis
One of the Only Comparisons You Can Make Between Kim Kardashian and Lena Dunham
Petersen's goals for her book Too Fat, Too Slutty, Too Loud were to analyze contemporary
celebrities and what behaviors they express that make them "unruly." Petersen focuses on one trait
for each particular woman and why their behavior has been historically perceived as an undesirable
trait conflicting with views of femininity. The goal is to have the reader understand why these traits
are threatening to women's roles in society. For example, Lena Dunham is described by Petersen
(2017) as "too naked, but she's also too loud, too powerful, too revealing, too much." Dunham is a
clear example of the unruly woman who has set out to provoke people through her art and ... Show

For example, Petersen (2017) quotes Howard Stern commenting on Lena Dunham's body, "It's a
little fat girl who kinda looks like Jonah Hill and she keeps taking her clothes off and it kind of feels
like rape ... I don't want to see that." On top of the criticism in the press, Petersen (2017) refers to
Dunham as the "internet's favorite punching bag." Mantilla (2015) states in her book Gendertrolling:
How Misogyny Went Viral "one of the predominant ways that women are criticized is by judging
their physical attractiveness as being deficient; that is, they are called 'ugly' or 'fat' most commonly."
Lena Dunham is no exception; not only does she receive criticism about her show and her privilege,
but she receives the most amount of hate on her body and her clothing. The comments Dunham
receives fits most if not all of the criteria Mantilla (2015) provides in her definition of gender
trolling: attacks precipitated by women asserting their opinions, receiving sexualized or gender–
based insults, receiving rape and death threats, commenting crossing multiple social media
platforms, comments occurring at high levels of intensity and frequency, attacks lasting for an
unusual duration, and attacks involving many people in a coordinated campaign. Additionally, the
more successful Dunham has become, the more online hate she has received. The trolling Dunham
receives seems to be a large

Gustave Moreau's Painting 'The Apparition'
1. The Symbolist movement was founded around 1886 with the writing of the Symbolist Manifesto
published in the publication Le Figaro. In the later part of the 19th century, Symbolist work was
concerned with the fragility of masculinity and la femme fatale. Gustave Moreau is one of the most
famous painters associated with Symbolism. His painting titled The Apparition, painted in 1874,
depicts Salome dancing for King Herod, pointing at the floating, glowing apparition of John the
Baptist's head. Salome is depicted as a classical nude, dancing to win her reward requested of King
Herod. The fact that Salome could influence the minds of men and inflict such destruction with her
naked body is one way the fear of femininity manifests itself in Moreau's work. Salome is la femme
fatale because she exclusively uses the influence her femininity and naked body have over men to
get what she wants. In contrast to Salome's body and the head of John the Baptist, the rest of the

Rops's painting, titled Pornocrates painted in 1878, depicts a blindfolded woman dressed in nothing
but stockings, shoes, gloves, a hat and a bow around her waist. She is walking a pig on a leash
surrounded by flying putti. At first glance, this woman would appear to be a classical nude, but her
attributes show she is only a naked woman. Aspects of Pornocrates can be compared to Alexandre
Cabanel's Birth of Venus, painted in 1863. In Cabanel's work, Venus is a classical nude positioned in
a coy, feminine pose, also with putti around her. The woman in Pornocrates wears pieces of modern
dress, depicting her as inappropriately undressed and lewd. She is the personification of the loose
morals and hedonistic nature of prostitutes found in the big city. Although also similar to Cabanel,
the putti in Rops's work are striking semi–sexual and revealing poses, dissuading the viewer of their

Crimes Revealed In Gun Alley Murder By Colin Ross
Colin Ross is known widely for the "Gun Alley Murder", which is the story or a 12 year old getting
raped and left for dead. Before the "Gun Alley Murder" even happened, Ross was charged and
imprisoned for using threatening words and carrying a firearm without permission. In April of 1921,
Ross and his brothers bought a wine shop and renamed it "The Australian Wine Saloon". In his older
years, Ross was charged with multiple criminal actions throughout the years of owning the saloon,
one of the many chargers was for robbery. Ross told Frank Walsh to rob a customer and the
proceeds would be shared between them, the customer was shot and could not tell anything to
police. Walsh was sentenced to six months hard labor and Ross was acquitted of his charges. ...

The Nature of Solitude in Chopin's Novel, The Awakening
The Nature of Solitude in Chopin's Novel, The Awakening
"The name of the piece was something else, but she called it 'Solitude.' When she heard it there
came before her imagination the figure of a man standing beside a desolate rock on the seashore. He
was naked. His attitude was one of hopeless resignation as he looked toward a distant bird winging
its flight away from him."(47)
"All along the white beach, up and down, there was no living thing in sight. A bird with a broken
wing was beating the air above, reeling, fluttering, circling disabled down, down to the water...when
she was there beside the sea, absolutely alone, she cast the unpleasant, pricking garments from her,
and for the first time in her life she stood naked in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The word "desolate" is used to describe the rock, offering up connotations of a barren, dismal
lifelessness. The figure of the man is "naked," or exposed and defenseless. His demeanor reflects
"hopeless resignation" as he views a "distant" bird "winging" "away from him." Here resignation
can be taken to mean an unresisting acceptance of something as inescapable and as a surrender.
Looking at this passage in this light, I cannot help but connect it with Robert. After finally
vocalizing his love for Edna, Robert is in a way "naked," free of the pretenses of socially conscious
manners. Following this admission, however, Robert leaves off waiting for Edna, gives up on
fulfilling his love, due, I think, in many ways to the social consequences that this would surely
bring. Thus Robert too is "hopelessly resigned" to social moires which influence him to let his
forbidden love "wing" away from him. This passage then foreshadows both Robert's resignation and
Edna's own experience at the end of the novel.
The second passage repeats several of the same images. On the beach there is "no living thing in
sight" and Edna is "absolutely alone." Thus the "desolation" and "solitude" from the first passage
reappear. The figure of the bird is also depicted again, only in this instance the bird has a "broken
wing" and "reel[s]" down, "disabled" towards the water, closer to the figure of Edna

The Death Of Death And Death Essay
Art is thematic. Through the ages artists have explored ideas in art from different perspectives. The
theme of death is recurrent in all cultures and throughout history. Religious death, death in battle,
death as punishment, death juxtaposed with life, death, more death, even more death! Death is
omnipresent in art. When one enters a museum, such as the National Gallery of Canada, different
representations of death can be found if one looks closely. There is five forms of Jesus' death:
crucifixion, pieta, descent from the cross, lamentation and entombment. Most art involving Jesus on
the crucifix have a peacefulness to them. Jesus somehow always looks serene but in pain. One can
see that he is hurting from the horrific way he is forced to die, but there is a calmness to his
sufferance. There is a romanticization to the death of Jesus on the cross. In The Crucifixion by
Quinten Massys, Jesus is dead on the cross. Beneath him are his mother Mary, John, and Mary
Magdalene. They are mourning him. Mary cannot look at the body of her son, John is looking up,
praying, and Mary Magdalene is embracing the cross. Their grief is expressed through their physical
action. Mary is suffering as a mother who lost her child, John is suffering as one who lost a dear
friend, and Mary Magdalene is suffering as a woman who lost a lover. In it's entirety, this piece of
art shows grief of death from different perspectives. The Jesus on the cross is not physically strong.
He is tiny. He appears to

The Conflict between Man and Machine in The Naked and the...
While the surface of Norman Mailer's The Naked and the Dead centers around World War II, its
focus is on "the conflict...between the mechanistic forces of the 'system' and the will to individual
integrity" (Waldron 273). The ultimate domination by the 'machine' makes for a very depressing,
hopeless novel. Mailer explores this conflict mainly in the interactions between General Cummings
and Lieutenant Hearn, and although less extensively through their lower ranked counterparts,
Sergeant Croft and Private Red Valsen. It is in these interactions that The Naked and the Dead
makes a statement about not only war, but society. Therefore, in order to fully understand the novel,
Cummings, Hearn, Croft, and Valsen must be examined and understood ... Show more content on

The mountain which dominates the island dominates the men with its motionless hostility. The sea
around them wears all things down and is full of death. The land itself becomes terrifying in its
somnolent brooding resistance. It seems as if there is a cosmic conspiracy against men, as if
something working through the various forces of nature is seeking to bring them to a standstill, erase
their identities, annihilate them altogether" (Siegel 291–292).
The men must take the island from the Japanese, and General Cummings formulates a grandiose
plan involving a reconnaissance mission, given to Croft's platoon, a general forward attack, and an
amphibious invasion from the other side of the island in order to surround the Japanese. It is while
he is planning this attack that he and Hearn have their own intellectual battle. Hearn loses.
Cummings then assigns him to Croft's platoon, as leader of the reconnaissance mission going behind
enemy lines. Croft is infuriated that he has been taken out of his position of power, and eventually
kills Hearn. By the time that the platoon returns to the main base, the island has been taken, but not

the Japanese on the island in one strike. The reconnaissance mission was never needed, did nothing

As time goes on and new technology is born, doctors and scientists alike create medicines to fight
diseases. Though no one needs to fear a little cold or even the flu, times when unknown illnesses
broke loose, the surrounding people did crazy things to get through the sickness that was wreaking
havoc around them. As can be seen throughout "Masque of the Red Death" by Edgar Allan Poe, the
people chose a very different approach than the ones in The Crucible by Arthur Miller to handle the
sickness around them. As the people of Prince Prospero's castle dance and feast, the countryside

leader went on as he attempted to hang all of the accused without proper evidence. This is deceitful
and shows the true nature of Reverend Parris. While Reverend Parris tries to have the people

Examples Of Abigail In The Crucible
All people commissioned to hang in Salem were innocent... how did they end up there? Through the
lies and accusations of Abigail, a teenager whose head was filled with power, revenge, and her
reputation. In Arthur Miller's play The Crucible he clearly shows that Abigail is guilty in more ways
than one. She is guilty of lies...accusation... and even murder.
On page 11 Abigail discusses with her uncle, Parris, about the events that occurred while they
danced in the woods. He claims to have seen a dress on the ground and someone naked running
through the trees. Abigail replies to this in terror "No one was naked! You mistake yourself, uncle!"

Assisi Chapter 9 Summary
The poor man of Assisi, Francis, had little education and lacked literacy skills, but these
shortcomings did not become an obstacle in sharing the important message of the gospel. "He was
not a scholarly saint like Augustine or Thomas Aquinas." Yet, Francis' dedication touched many
through his religious writings and compilation of poems, songs and prayers. "Francis was not a
gifted student as a child and he received no university or seminary degree. His conversion
experience came in the form of dreams where God commissioned him to rebuild His church and
care for the poor. He took these 'marching orders' seriously and committed himself to following
Christ in reality and truth as revealed in the Scriptures". Chapter 10 The Death of Francis In 1225,
Francis lived in Rieti and suffered many ailments. He was unable to eat, impacted by dropsy,
edema–excess water accumulation. Severe ophthalmia, with its extreme sensitivity to light and pain
from inflammation of the mucous membranes of the eye, proved excruciating. He was not a very

Who Was Responsible For Roger Whipple's Death
I do think that Roger Whipple actually murdered the twins but the narrator does not blame him for
it. She has a superficial sympathy towards her childhood friend's death, for the power they held over
everyone. I don't believe the narrator actually murdered her childhood friends herself, nor was she
physically there when they were murdered. To me it seems like she envisioned what Roger might
have done to the twins or maybe what she wished she could have done herself. That's why she is
able to have such detailed idea about their unfortunate death. "I wasn't there, but some things you
know" (Oates 556). Maybe this is something she knows, because the desire for them to die was in
her thoughts already. I believed the narrator though that the twins

All Quiet On The Western Front Chapter 6 Summary
Erich Maria Remarque uses significant symbols throughout chapter 6 of "All Quiet On the Western
Front", all of which hold an important meaning. The objects used throughout symbolize Paul's
fragileness with appreciation for nature, and the death and order happening around the men. One
example of Paul's simplicity comes into show when two brimstone–butterflies play in front of the
men's trench. In comparison to the observation planes, which the men "hate like a plague" (128), the
butterflies express the simplicity and joy of nature. Even when the beautiful creature lands on a
skull, the bufferlies presence remind the men that the land on which they fight still contains a order
of nature. A second representation of the butterflies is that of frailness.

The Apocalypse of William S. Burroughs’ Naked Lunch Essay
The Apocalypse of William S. Burroughs' Naked Lunch
The roaring of lions, the howling of wolves, the raging of the stormy sea, and the destructive sword,
are portions of eternity too great for the eye of man. (William Blake, The Marriage of Heaven and
Hell, p. 7)
In 1980, William S. Burroughs delivered a speech at the Planet Earth Conference at the Institute of
Ecotechnics in Aix–en–Provence titled 'The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse'.1 In this speech,
Burroughs, following religious tradition, says that the four horsemen of the apocalypse are Famine,
Plague, War, and Death and moves on to prophesise a more contemporaneous apocalypse. In
Burroughs' apocalypse, War and Plague, for example, have become allies; this alliance, ... Show

But he was never considered to be an apocalyptist before this speech. As I shall argue in this paper,
in Naked Lunch (1959), Burroughs serves us a naked apocalypse that is not simply cataclysmic and
frightening but eternal, parodic, and comic.
In 1988, Burroughs was asked to write the introduction to a Keith Haring exhibition catalogue,
Apocalypse.2 In it, Burroughs is more specific about his conception of the apocalypse:
Consider an apocalyptic statement: 'Nothing is true, everything is permitted' – Hassan i Sabbath. Not
to be interpreted as an invitation to all manner of unrestrained and destructive behavior; that would
be a minor episode, which would run its course. Everything is permitted because nothing is true. It is
all make–believe, illusion, dream.... ART. When art leaves the frame and the written world leaves
the page – not merely the physical frame and page, but the frames and pages of assigned categories
– a basic disruption of reality occurs: the literal realization of art... Success will write
APOCALYPSE across the sky. (Burroughs and Haring, p. 1)
If nothing is true then there can be no prohibition and no law and everything is permitted, and
permitted in the form of creative art because only that can disrupt reality. The effect of Burroughs'
experiments with writing is to demystify literature as an institution and to make it available for
creative work. 'Anybody can make cut–ups', he

Poem Vs Short Story
The essential difference between a poem and a short story is the difference of scope. So, poems are
short and they, briefly, tell you how the author is feeling about in a few words, while short stories
could be written by the author at any moment with a plot, themes, character development, setting
etc.
The play "Naked Lunch" by Michael Hollinger is about a man named Vernon and a female named
Lucy. They used to be a couple but they are no longer together. When they were sitting down to eat,
Vernon started asking her the reasons of why she did not want to eat steak. He was making a big
problem of it. Vernon finally ends up making Lucy eat the steak by yelling at her. Consequently, she
ate the steak because she was scared.
A play can be long or short, it all depends on what the author wants to transmit to his or her
audience. The time is essentially important. In a play the characters need to talk each other to have
an act; on the other hand, in short stories the narrator explains the situation, he is the one making
and telling us the story.
Most good stories start with a fundamental characteristics: the initial situation, the conflict, the
climax, suspense, and conclusion. In "Girl" by Jamaica Kincaid, the story does not seems to be real

A short story has characters, a main idea (the plot), the conflict of the story. They both have an
emotional respond from the reader. In "I could not stop for Death" by Emily Dickinson, the author
gives us a clue of what the poem will be about at the beginning. This makes it easier to understand;
how the author begins it differences him from others. As in "Naked Lunch" by Michael Hollinger; I
honestly thought that this couple would get back together since they were having diner, but
eventually it ended up in an unexpected way. It was not the ending I expected honestly. Dickinson in

Following the scene in Richard Schechner's 'Dionysus in 69' when the Messenger provides context
regarding the Pentheus's death, the actual scene is performed in the way that the audience is well
aware of the violent death scene. In Euripides The Bacchae, the scene involves the Messenger
explaining the details leading up to Pentheus death where he is drawn to the women and perches
upon a tree to get a better view. Instead, the act of Pentheus's death in 'Dionysus in 69' is re–

Dehumanization In Eliezer Wiesel's Night
"He was so terrible that he was no longer terrible, only dehumanized" (Fitzgerald) F. Scott
Fitzgerald, a famous novel and short story author, wrote in his novel Tender is the Night. This
statement can be related to Adolf Hitler and the Nazis, as they had become so terrible and set on
annihilating the Jews that they became ruthless, inhuman people. Consequently, the dehumanization
of the Nazis caused the Jews to become dehumanized and treated as though they were animals. In
the memoir Night, Eliezer Wiesel shows how German Nazis carried out the dehumanization of Jews
in concentration camps, and how rehumanization was ultimately impossible. First of all, the Nazis
were the main proponents in dehumanizing the Jews. To illustrate, there was "an infinitely long
train, composed of roofless cattle cars, [and] the SS shoved [them] inside, a hundred per car..." (97).
They Nazis were not concerned about the care and treatment of the Jews. The guards packed the
prisoners inside the cattle cars as if they were a bunch of unnamed animals getting ready to go to the
slaughterhouse, and the Jews eventually became those unnamed animals. Specifically, Eliezel
"...became A–7713. From then on, [he] had no other name" (42). Names were quickly forgotten, and
Jews only regarded to as their number. Even more, the now unnamed, ... Show more content on

Gene Therapy Safety
Efficacy and Safety of Gene Therapy
Zack Martin
What is Gene Therapy? A new form of medicine with the potential to save and improve millions of
live is gene therapy, or gene replacement therapy. Gene therapy is the use of DNA as a
pharmaceutical agent used to treat or cure diseases or disorders caused by defective or missing
genes. There are three methods of gene therapy: replacing a mutated gene with a healthy copy of the
same gene, inactivating a gene that is not functioning properly, or introducing a completely new
gene to help the patient fight a disease. Gene therapy is a promising treatment option, however, the
technique has yet to be perfected and is still dangerous and experimental.
Replacing a Mutated Gene with a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first method is to attach the gene to a virus. This is done by removing the functional group of
the virus that harms the body and attaching the gene that is to be delivered into the cell. Retroviruses
and adenoviruses are the two types of viruses used in gene therapy. Retroviral vectors are used
because it inserts its own DNA into the host's DNA. There are two ways to use retroviral vectors in
gene therapy, introduce the vector intravenously, or removing the patient's tissue, inserting the
vector in a lab setting, then replacing the tissue. One of the flaws using the retroviral vector method
in gene therapy is that integrase enzyme(responsible for integrating the retroviral DNA into the host
cell) can insert the gene in any position in the genome. If the gene is place in the middle of another
functional sequence, it would cause a malfunction of that particular gene. Not all gene sequences
have a significant function, but there is still considerable risk in the retroviral vector method.
Although it can be dangerous, this is most commonly used in patients with a small chance of
survival, so the risk is not as

Several aspects written about were completely astounding, like the Greek obsession with the human
body and physical fitness. All of this information has been explained by telling stories of Olympic
athletes and Grecians, and how the events came to life. The Naked Olympics has provided more
knowledge on certain topics and offered new concepts and ideas of ancient Greece to explore by
recreating an Olympic experience in ancient Greece.

Unlike the victors, it was not unusual for losers to be punished. Severe punishments such as
whippings and death were common for those who lost their event or match. "Another unnamed
coach was so exasperated when one of his wrestlers did attempt to surrender that he rushed forward
and stabbed the athlete with a sharp metal instrument, killing him" (pg 32). Winning the competition
was such an honor and losing such a disgrace that many trainers would rather see their athletes dead
then admit defeat. Coaches also took extreme measures to motivate their athletes before they
competed. Unfortunately, these acts usually played games on the athlete's psych. Promachus, who
competed in pankration, was led to believe that if he won, the girl he loved had promised him her
favors. His coach had learned about his feelings towards her and used his emotions to motivate him.
Promachus was so enthused when he heard of her intentions if he was victorious that he won his
event despite the overwhelming odds against him (pg 32). Olympic athletes were everyday Grecians

Massacre Of The Innocents By Judith Beheading
Though I do not know the background of Massacre of the Innocents, this painting seems to depict a
group of men fighting with a group of women over babies, and when the men manage to steal these
babies, the men kill them. Besides the death of children, the most peculiar aspect of this painting is
the fact that the men and the babies are naked and the women seem to be losing their clothes. The
different person's level of clothing can tell a lot about what is going on. Leaving the men without
clothing seems to give the painter a chance to define their muscles in a way that would have been
difficult with them clothed. Even though some of the women's bodies can be seen, they are not as
well defined as the men's making it apparent who is stronger. Pairing this with Judith Beheading
Holofernes, nakedness can also show a lack of power. Holofernes was supposed to be a very
powerful man, but after being tricked by Judith, he meets his demise by what could possibly be his
own sword. Without his armor and wits, he has no power or ability to defend himself and is killed
by someone who would typically be seen as the least powerful character. This meaning is not
necessarily depicted in Saturn Devouring His Son where both Saturn and his son are without
clothing though there seems to be a type of animal skin around Saturn's waist while the child he is
chewing on lacks all clothing. Saturn's lack of clothing and his mad expression makes him to appear
like an animal or monster instead of a

Wilfred Owen's Anthem for Doomed Youth Analysis Essay
Wilfred Owen's Anthem for a Doomed Youth is exactly that, an anthem ( a solemn song) to
commemorate the innocent youth, whose lives were taken to soon by war. By using the word
anthem, he calls to mind the glory and honor of a national anthem, however; he goes on to explain
that there is no honor or glory in death, pairing the words doomed and youth together creates so
much sorrow as well, it provides a woeful impression as it foretells of young people having no hope.
Written in sonnet form, it is an elegy for the dead. The octave deals with auditory images of war and
death and the sestet deals with more visual images. Wilfred Owen masterfully uses both imagery
and figurative language to convey his lament for these young people who died. ... Show more

Owen gives the sonnet a powerful, negative connotation from the very beginning. He implies with
this phrase a dehumanization of the soldiers as well as the fact that war causes human beings to treat
each other as less than human. In line three, the reader can hear the sound imagery of the "stuttering
rifles' rapid rattle". The word "anger" in line 2 also emphasizes the destructive hatred of war.
"Choirs of wailing shells" is a powerful metaphor in line 7 contrasting the world of war and the
world of God.
For the rest of the poem various religious images abound. For example, the word candles would call
to mind the church candles, but they also mean the candles lit in rooms where coffins lie. "Holy
glimmers of goodbyes" (line 9) combines religious imagery with the idea of death. In the pallor half
rhyme of line 11, these two words combine in one line to show the seriousness of the situation.
Young people are dying in war, and it is tragic. The "flowers" of line 11 are also a double–edged
sword. Flowers are given on very happy, momentous occasions, but they are also in abundance at
solemn occasions like funerals. Furthermore, Owen compares the events of war to traditional burial
rituals and describes how those who die in war do not receive proper funerals. In the first stanza,
Owen references the "monstrous anger of guns" to "passing–bells" and "rifles' rapid rattle" to "hasty
orisons". Usually

Drug Addiction In Junky And Naked Lunch
The images that Burroughs presented in Junky, and The Yage Letters about drug addiction is totally
different from the one he presented in Naked Lunch. In the previous books, Burroughs only showed
the good party like side of drug addiction, it made him hallucinates but took away all the worries
and fears he had. He traveled to Mexico, Columbia and Morocco because he wanted to freely do
heroin and all the drugs he could get. He mentioned casually the side effects of drugs but it was
normal for him and he wouldn't stop doing it because of that. In addition, in the other books he was
telling the story from the point of view of a rich man who had money to afford the life of a Junky, he
could travel, he had a family and even though he killed his wife while under the influence of drugs
he didn't blame it on that. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

When You That You Were Naked Analysis
Who Told You That You Were Naked? A Refreshing Reexamination of the Garden of Eden is a
novel by William E. Combs. This is a non–fiction Christian study guide and was released by
Carpenter's Son Publishing. The book is very well formatted and easy to read. It is an analysis of the
origin of sin (nakedness) and the use of continuous faith in Jesus Christ as our salvation. So, are you
naked? This book will challenge the most common Christian misconceptions of sin – using a blend
of vignettes, testimonies and biblical scripture as references.
Short detailed evocative descriptions (vignettes), are used to explain different concepts in this book.

I would only recommend this book to practicing Christians, especially those who would need to
further study the bible. I would not, however, recommend this book to those of a contrary opinion.
Personally, I did not like the book. I've always found religious concepts subjective and thus, open to
a multitude of interpretations. However, this book is a (200+) pages of a person's interpretation of
the concept of sin. The same concept is repeated numerous times, I found it was very monotonous.
I could only console myself by reading the testimonies in this book. They were more objective and
relatable. But even then, the author introduced events that I found subjective as well. Especially his
descriptions of his encounter with the "light" were vague and open to interpretation. I would relate
to similar experiences whenever I camp alone in isolated locations (I do that a lot!). A key
consideration when analyzing these other worldly experiences, is the individual(s) is usually alone

Naked Mole Rat Essay
Transferring A Naked Mole Rat Gene To A Bacteria To Create a Treatment For Cancer
Host Organism: Bacteria (V ibrio natriegens)
Name of Gene: Naked Mole Rat INK4 locus
Name of Protein: pALT(INK4a/b)
Name/Description of Trait: The trait is the ability to prevent oncogenesis (the formation of a cancer,
whereby normal cells are transformed into cancer cells)
World Problem: Cancer of all types.
Rationale/Ethics: V ibrio natriegens is the world's fastest growing bacteria, doubling every 10
minutes. This trait makes it optimal for the mass–production of the gene that codes for the
pALT(INK4a/b) protein, which could be used for cancer treatments. It is inexpensive and creates a
lot of the necessary protein. The pALT(INK4a/b) protein found in naked mole rats that would be
inserted into this bacteria is able to prevent tumors from developing. Cancer is the second most
common cause of death in the US and is responsible for 1 of every 4 deaths. If a lot of this gene (and
consequently the protein) is created by these transgenic bacteria, researchers could find new ways to
incorporate this protein into cancer treatments. It is ethical as ... Show more content on

fast–replicating bacteria, the protein would be in abundant supply and can be used to help develop a
myriad of treatments for cancer. A cancer vaccine is one possibility, as the protein prevents
oncogenesis from occurring. There would be no shortage of the protein, since the transgenic
organism would just keep multiplying and copying the protein, making acquiring it inexpensive and

What Is The Theme Of The Morgue Scene
In Thérèse Raquin, Émile Zola uses specific scenes in order to convey and communicate explicit
concepts from which the reader can extrapolate key themes in the novel, and the Morgue scene of
Chapter XIII is an excellent example of this. Such scenes also offer a comprehensive depiction of
the times and the Morgue scene gives us a slice of Parisian life during the 19th century. Across the
span of this chapter, Zola's unflinching depiction of the morgue, the bodies lying on the slabs, and
most importantly, his meticulous illustration of those who visit the morgue for titillation or other
reasons, impose profound connotations of Parisian society in that period. One of the reasons for
such a realistically lifelike extract was Zola's deliberate effort ... Show more content on

Zola regarded Manet as one of the "masters of the future" and defended him against harsh critics, as
he strongly believed in the way Manet expressed himself in his paintings. Manet's "Olympia", in
particular, generated intense scandal due to its sexual connotations and many disapproved of the
painting. However, Manet's talent motivated Zola to include crude sexuality and painterly technique
in his writing. In truth, the theme of sexuality permeates the entire novel, even in the Morgue scene;
Zola's portrayal of the coarse primitiveness of human nature is again evident when the "gangs of
kids" come in "stopping only by women's bodies" to "stare impudently at the naked breasts". This is
a perversely disturbing spectacle for youngsters to see, but Zola approaches it matter–of–factly,
commenting without irony that "It is in the Morgue that young street urchins have their first
mistress". This graphic image of the exposed breasts creates an abhorrent atmosphere for the reader,
signifying an objectification of women during that time as this piece of writing can be seen as
patriarchal novel. Zola furthers this impression by describing the Morgue as "a show that anyone

Cancer And Its Effects On The Human Body
Mole Rats Cancer Immunity
Daniel Howard
Bio 4920
10/15/15
One of the deadliest diseases known man, cancer, is responsible for every one out of every four
deaths in the United States. Worldwide, there are more than 10 million new cancer cases per year,
and cancer is the cause of approximately 12% of all deaths (Silvera & Rohan, 2007). This count is
rising and will continue to do so as scientists and researchers claim that there is no cure yet, just
treatment. So, what exactly is cancer and how does it work? Cancer can arise virtually anyplace in
the human body, which consists of trillions of cells. Generally, human cells mature and divide to
create new cells as the body needs them. Whether it is from damage or aging, cells eventually die
and new cells take their place. However, when cancer develops, this systematic process becomes
disrupted. As cells become more and more abnormal, old or damaged cells live when they should
die, and new cells form when they are not needed (Doll & Peto, 1981). These new cells are able to
divide without stopping which can eventually lead to abnormal growths called tumors.
Many cancers form tumors. Tumors are essentially just masses of tissue that can arise throughout the
majority of the body. There are two different types of tumors that are important when in comes to
cancer. There are malignant tumors and benign tumors. Benign tumors do not typically spread and
when removed, they do not normally grow back.

My Initial Impression of the Act: When Mrs. Putnam is introduced for the first time, she is described

Influence And Effect Natural Selection Has On Rabbits
The Influence and Effect Natural Selection Has On Rabbits Introduction Years ago Charles Darwin
created the theory of natural selection. He attempted to explain how evolution worked, and his
theory is now regarded as correct. Natural selection states that animals with traits that are better
suited to their environment will survive and reproduce more. This would explain how evolution
works. Groups of animals with the most beneficial traits survive and are able to reproduce. While
the other group has difficulty surviving and would therefore reproduce less. The variation between
that type of animal would come from a random mutation which turned out to be useful. An animal
may get a mutation which is either beneficial or disadvantageous to the organism (1). As time
progresses there are a larger amount of animals with the beneficial trait, while there is a lot less
animals with the older trait. Natural selection correlates to the phrase "survival of the fittest"
meaning that animals with beneficial traits will survive, while those without will die (2).
Theoretically, this could lead to an entire change of the population; leaving only the group that can
survive easily and produce more offspring. The purpose of the lab executed was to see what would
happen to the traits of rabbits over generations as alleles in the new rabbits change. In the lab there
were two types of rabbits––furred rabbits and naked rabbits. Having fur was the dominant trait and
no fur was the recessive

Slave Market Symbolism
It is interesting because at first glance the painting seems to be promoting the objectification of
women for the sake of male pleasure. However, Gerome's paintings of the slave market scenes were
the center of many controversies because they challenged the very persisting male dominated
conventions of his time. It contaminated the hypocritical thinking that in art, we could view a
woman's body solely through a pure, aesthetic angle. Male artists during the nineteenth–century
typically illustrated women as objects that wanted to be seen or consumed. However, these slave
market scenes forced male viewers to confront the cruel and wicked nature that follows through
with the objectifying of women.
The woman in A Roman Slave Market does not want to be seen. Instead, she is standing in front of
an all–male audience naked, vulnerable, and ashamed. A slave to the critical gazes of the men trying
to buy her, knowing all the while she will soon have to live out the rest of her days as a slave to one
of them. These implied undertones offered a very different representation of female nudity.
To be naked is to be oneself. To be nude is to be seen naked by others and yet not recognized for
oneself. A naked body has to be seen as an object in order to become a nude. ( The sight of it as an
object stimulates the use of it as an object.) Nakedness reveals itself. Nudity is placed on display. To
be naked is to be without disguise. To be on display is to have the surface of one's own skin, the
hairs of one's own body, turned into a disguise which, in that situation, can never be discarded. The
nude is condemned to never being naked. Nudity is a form of dress.
In Gerome's A Roman Slave Market the female slave's back is facing towards the viewer. This raises
the question; how do the female slave's shame and despair come across to the viewer if her face is
not even visible? As mentioned earlier on, the viewer is forced to assume the vantage point of the
next slave waiting to be sold on the stage. With that in mind, one can only assume that this nude
woman is not an object longing to be looked at. Instead, in shame she is burying her face in her two
arms which are firmly held together in a triangular shape. The triangular

Reflection Of Taking A Walk
In this poem, the overall speaker, taking a walk one evening on a crowded city street, starts off
referring to his environment with neutrality, in an objective though slightly foreboding tone. Soon,
he encounters a lover singing to his beloved about how his love remains never ending and eternal.
However, this song becomes contradicted by the city clocks, which offer a more solemn yet realistic
point of view regarding life and love. The poem ends with the overall speaker, speaking with a grim
tone influenced by the clock's depiction of love, referring to love in the same ominous tone,
suggesting agreement with the clocks. Ultimately, the three speaker throughout the poem convey

The lover, the second speaker of the poem, starts his/her song with an almost dreamlike and blissful
tone of the everlong emotion of love. The lover begins his/her song with "'Love has no ending'"
(Line 8), he/she already opens with a sense of ignorance. The lover continues with the use of
personification on a river and salmon then he/she references several hyperboles about how his/her
love will not stop until "...the ocean/ Is folded and hung up to dry/ And the seven stars go
squawking/ Like geese about the sky" (Lines 13 to 16). The lover ends with a simile comparing how
quickly the years will pass to how quickly rabbits run. The lover's song consists of a constant use of
hyperbole and consonance to draw all of the song together. Upon the lover finishing his/her song,
the speaker shifts.
The tone shift begins, again, with the primary speaker introducing the next speaker, the clocks. The
clocks then begins to "whirr and chime" (Line 22) and with the use of those onomatopoeias it
conveys its message. The clocks begins with, "'O let not Time deceive you,/You cannot conquer

Poetry Appreciation
Appreciation is something that hardly happens without being aroused by an outside force. In other
words, people don't commonly express their love unless they have a reason to. In Shakespeare's
poem "The Time of Year Thou Mayst in Me Behold", the speaker is dying and asks his audience to
reflect upon their own lives in order to appreciate them more. Shakespeare employs simple
metaphors to demonstrate that as death draws nearer, love increases.
The sonnet's first comparison is that of a tree that's leaves are scarce because it is the winter time.
The leaves fall and the tree appears naked and dead; its time of prospering is over. This tree is much
like the dying man in that as his internal workings slow down, his outer appearance changes.
Shakespeare's next analogy of the man is a sunset that has "fadeth in the west" (6). A sunset is one of
the most striking images that the earth can conjure up. The man has shined like the sun all his life,
but now that he approaches his own twilight, he'll be taken by the darkness. The final metaphor is
different because it speaks of being consumed by that which was helpful during life. The "glowing
of such fire" no longer nourishes and strengthens as it did when he was young (9). It now
mercilessly burns him in ignorance it is killing that which keeps it ... Show more content on

That which the reader must leave ere long can be read to mean the man's life or the reader's own
youth. Perhaps Shakespeare is offering both messages to his readers. The death of a loved one
causes love for oneself and for the dying person. It may be argued that Shakespeare is only
suggesting or advocating for an increase of love at the end of life. However, when he says "which
makes thy love more strong", he is leaving no room for a suggestion. Instead, he is saying that death
must make increase love because it's the

Regular patrons have the lines committed to memory, and yell back lines during extended pauses
taken by the actors. For example, when Dr. Frank 'N' Furter deliberately extends the word
"anticipation" during the song 'Sweet Transvestite', the audiences are prepared to yell "Say it!". The
audience also has opportunities to use their props, for instance during the wedding scene in the very
beginning, the audience sprinkles rice on the newlywed couple. After the wedding scene, on the
ringing of the bells, the audience blow bubbles while Brad and Janet have a romantic conversation.
Other examples include covering their heads with newspapers and spraying water using squirt guns
on Brad and Janet during the re–enacting of the stormy night, wearing gloves as Dr. Frank wears his
while revealing the story of Rocky's creation and wearing party hats during the guest dinner. The
yelling of particular lines and use of props varies from production to production, but these are
classic examples of breaking the fourth wall, i.e. the imaginary wall between audiences and stage
actors. People looking for a cathartic release enjoy shouting lines as the play unfolds. The on–screen
version does not facilitate such interaction between the performers and the viewers.
Another strong reason for a predisposition towards the stage production is the character of The

Essay on Gothic Conventions in The Bloody Chamber by...
Gothic Conventions in The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter
The Gothic is often distinguished by an atmosphere of terror, darkness, mystery, the unexplained
and the transgression of boundaries. This essay will attempt to dissect how Angela Carter uses
Gothic conventions in the passage taken out of her novel, 'The Bloody
Chamber'.
One of the most predominant conventions manipulated here is that of a dark and mysterious
atmosphere. Throughout the passage the feeling of terror prevails. This is first started by the
protagonist's taking of a "forbidden key". This stirs up a feeling of disquiet, as it implies a certain
degree of prohibition and disapproval towards her task. She later enforces that her bravery is
somewhat foolish ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This gives the idea that urbanity cannot touch the place; technology is invalid there, and hence
adding to the obscurity of the atmosphere. She then adds that the castle was "adrift" and it
"floated…at (her) orders". This gives the story a fantastical twist.
By adding an element of magic and the supernatural, Carter has sowed the seed of doubt in the mind
of the reader as to the credibility of the story. It is a blurring of boundaries, where the surreal and
reality cannot be made mutually exclusive.
This idea of the supernatural is later picked up again in a painting,
"Rape of the Sabines", where the focuses of the picture "suggested some grisly mythological
subject". Here, the supernatural strikes terror as well, displaying itself in a horrific, but at the same
time, erotic, manner. This act of sexual brutality plays a role in creating the tension of the
atmosphere. Also, this is where inanimate objects are put in a sexual light – "rich breast of a
woman", "naked sword",
"naked stone". This could be because the writer is trying to suggest that in the castle, everything is
stripped down to its bare elements – everything is in its primal state, just as sex is a primal desire,
which will lead the protagonist to strip away the "garments" of her innocence; the heart of Man is
corrupt. This alludes to the Freudian theory of the Superego, the Ego and the Id. The Id is the centre

The Fool–Emperor realizes that to rule over a kingdom he requires more than just the intuition of his
High Priestess so he consults the Hierophant, the fifth card of the major arcana. The Hierophant (V)
represents the archetype of the Old Wise Man, specifically one belonging to an institution such as
the Church (Nichols, 1980). So far, the Fool has been playing it by ear. Meeting the Hierophant
teaches him the importance of a formal education. To further his pursuit of his dreams, the Fool
reads books and consults experts. The next card in the major arcana is the Lovers (VI). Whereas the
Empress and Emperor cards represent masculinity and femininity experienced individually, the
Lovers card represents their union. The Lovers card represents the Fool's attempt to integrate the
archetypes he has learned so far. Having integrated the archetypes, the Fool must now run with
them. He needs to move forward with the archetypes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Without his old identity, the Fool is now naked and exposed. However, he is unperturbed. He is
finally free to be his authentic self. Watering the ground where the Tower once stood, the Fool hopes
to build anew. This hope is symbolized by the Star (XVII) above him. The water he pours onto the
earth symbolizes the merging of the conscious and unconscious (Nichols, 1980). Though he is intent
on rebuilding a new and stronger Tower, he must mourn the loss of his old home. So, the Fool
spends some time under the Moon (XVIII). It's only natural to mourn a loss, even if the object of our
mourning was harmful to us. The Moon card represents the task of going inward to gently heal past
wounds and let go of old karma (Skinner, 2004). When one has successfully moved on and the night
is finally over, the Sun (XIX) rises. The Sun is a reminder that after periods of mourning and
introspection come periods of joy. Spending time in a joyful state renews us. The Judgment card
symbolizes this resurrection

Why Is Meursault Exiled
When reading The Stranger I found it hard to see that Meursault was anything but detached. His
lack of regard for those characters who should have been important to him made him seem amoral.
When reading the Forward to The Stranger the author Albert Camus says that Meursault acts with
this disregard for emotions because he refuses to play the game. The author admits that this makes
Meursault seem strange but does not say that this strangeness is a bad thing. This statement made
me rethink my opinion on Meursault. I began to think that a social construct for how one should
react to a circumstance, in this case, Meursault's mother's death, shouldn't be in place. I believe this
because everyone reacts differently to different situations, therefore, to expect Meursault to mourn is
unjust. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The author describes lying as not only saying what is not, [but also], saying more than what is and
more than one feels", which Camus claims Meursault does throughout the novel (Page 1). The
author says in doing so Meursault doesn't overestimate his feelings. This statement would explain
why Meursault doesn't morn over his mother's death or tell Marie he loved her when he didn't.
Although the author's intention may have been to show Meursault in this way it was damaging to the
reader's process of understanding the character because of the way Meursault demonstrates this

How Did Valley Forge Washington Decide To Stay At Valley...

  • 1. How Did Valley Forge Washington Decide To Stay At Valley... Pain is to suffer or cause distress. Pain has been consuming me for the past nine months. The war has a very strong sting in my heart. The past two years of this war has not gone well for practically for anyone. As for Washington, no one, not even I knew what his position was. His position was uncertain. I have decided to not re–enlist for these three main reasons which are: the bad conditions at Valley Forge, the illness and death, and the quality of the clothing. Howe's army of 18,000 comfortably quartered in Philadelphia. George Washington decided to build a winter camp (Valley Forge) about 18 miles northwest of Philadelphia. On 1773, the Boston Tea party was held. 310 streetlights were installed in Boston in 1773. In 1777, George Washington's army arrives at Valley Forge. Scarlet fever is when women who were crushing hardcore on the British red coats. Valley Forge is a winter camp about 18 miles northwest of Philadelphia. Desert is to abandon in a way considered disloyal or treacherous. I am not going to stay at Valley Forge to fight because I do not like the conditions at camp. " Poor food ... cold water ... nasty cookery ... starve and freeze," (Waldo 151). Assuming that Washington wanted us to stay and fight, then we need better circumstances. Assuming that I stay, I would still have bad circumstances at Valley Forge, I would be ill which might make me die, and the bad clothing conditions. You and I should not re–enlist because we want to live and could lose the fight. I would rather survive and die old and happy, seeing your grandchildren grow up. • 2. Lena Dunham Analysis One of the Only Comparisons You Can Make Between Kim Kardashian and Lena Dunham Petersen's goals for her book Too Fat, Too Slutty, Too Loud were to analyze contemporary celebrities and what behaviors they express that make them "unruly." Petersen focuses on one trait for each particular woman and why their behavior has been historically perceived as an undesirable trait conflicting with views of femininity. The goal is to have the reader understand why these traits are threatening to women's roles in society. For example, Lena Dunham is described by Petersen (2017) as "too naked, but she's also too loud, too powerful, too revealing, too much." Dunham is a clear example of the unruly woman who has set out to provoke people through her art and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, Petersen (2017) quotes Howard Stern commenting on Lena Dunham's body, "It's a little fat girl who kinda looks like Jonah Hill and she keeps taking her clothes off and it kind of feels like rape ... I don't want to see that." On top of the criticism in the press, Petersen (2017) refers to Dunham as the "internet's favorite punching bag." Mantilla (2015) states in her book Gendertrolling: How Misogyny Went Viral "one of the predominant ways that women are criticized is by judging their physical attractiveness as being deficient; that is, they are called 'ugly' or 'fat' most commonly." Lena Dunham is no exception; not only does she receive criticism about her show and her privilege, but she receives the most amount of hate on her body and her clothing. The comments Dunham receives fits most if not all of the criteria Mantilla (2015) provides in her definition of gender trolling: attacks precipitated by women asserting their opinions, receiving sexualized or gender– based insults, receiving rape and death threats, commenting crossing multiple social media platforms, comments occurring at high levels of intensity and frequency, attacks lasting for an unusual duration, and attacks involving many people in a coordinated campaign. Additionally, the more successful Dunham has become, the more online hate she has received. The trolling Dunham receives seems to be a large ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Gustave Moreau's Painting 'The Apparition' 1. The Symbolist movement was founded around 1886 with the writing of the Symbolist Manifesto published in the publication Le Figaro. In the later part of the 19th century, Symbolist work was concerned with the fragility of masculinity and la femme fatale. Gustave Moreau is one of the most famous painters associated with Symbolism. His painting titled The Apparition, painted in 1874, depicts Salome dancing for King Herod, pointing at the floating, glowing apparition of John the Baptist's head. Salome is depicted as a classical nude, dancing to win her reward requested of King Herod. The fact that Salome could influence the minds of men and inflict such destruction with her naked body is one way the fear of femininity manifests itself in Moreau's work. Salome is la femme fatale because she exclusively uses the influence her femininity and naked body have over men to get what she wants. In contrast to Salome's body and the head of John the Baptist, the rest of the composition is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Rops's painting, titled Pornocrates painted in 1878, depicts a blindfolded woman dressed in nothing but stockings, shoes, gloves, a hat and a bow around her waist. She is walking a pig on a leash surrounded by flying putti. At first glance, this woman would appear to be a classical nude, but her attributes show she is only a naked woman. Aspects of Pornocrates can be compared to Alexandre Cabanel's Birth of Venus, painted in 1863. In Cabanel's work, Venus is a classical nude positioned in a coy, feminine pose, also with putti around her. The woman in Pornocrates wears pieces of modern dress, depicting her as inappropriately undressed and lewd. She is the personification of the loose morals and hedonistic nature of prostitutes found in the big city. Although also similar to Cabanel, the putti in Rops's work are striking semi–sexual and revealing poses, dissuading the viewer of their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When she heard it there came before her imagination the figure of a man standing beside a desolate rock on the seashore. He was naked. His attitude was one of hopeless resignation as he looked toward a distant bird winging its flight away from him."(47) "All along the white beach, up and down, there was no living thing in sight. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The word "desolate" is used to describe the rock, offering up connotations of a barren, dismal lifelessness. The figure of the man is "naked," or exposed and defenseless. His demeanor reflects "hopeless resignation" as he views a "distant" bird "winging" "away from him." Here resignation can be taken to mean an unresisting acceptance of something as inescapable and as a surrender. Looking at this passage in this light, I cannot help but connect it with Robert. After finally vocalizing his love for Edna, Robert is in a way "naked," free of the pretenses of socially conscious manners. Following this admission, however, Robert leaves off waiting for Edna, gives up on fulfilling his love, due, I think, in many ways to the social consequences that this would surely bring. Thus Robert too is "hopelessly resigned" to social moires which influence him to let his forbidden love "wing" away from him. This passage then foreshadows both Robert's resignation and Edna's own experience at the end of the novel. The second passage repeats several of the same images. On the beach there is "no living thing in sight" and Edna is "absolutely alone." Thus the "desolation" and "solitude" from the first passage reappear. The figure of the bird is also depicted again, only in this instance the bird has a "broken wing" and "reel[s]" down, "disabled" towards the water, closer to the figure of Edna ... • 7. The Death Of Death And Death Essay Art is thematic. Through the ages artists have explored ideas in art from different perspectives. The theme of death is recurrent in all cultures and throughout history. Religious death, death in battle, death as punishment, death juxtaposed with life, death, more death, even more death! Death is omnipresent in art. When one enters a museum, such as the National Gallery of Canada, different representations of death can be found if one looks closely. There is five forms of Jesus' death: crucifixion, pieta, descent from the cross, lamentation and entombment. Most art involving Jesus on the crucifix have a peacefulness to them. Jesus somehow always looks serene but in pain. One can see that he is hurting from the horrific way he is forced to die, but there is a calmness to his sufferance. There is a romanticization to the death of Jesus on the cross. In The Crucifixion by Quinten Massys, Jesus is dead on the cross. Beneath him are his mother Mary, John, and Mary Magdalene. They are mourning him. Mary cannot look at the body of her son, John is looking up, praying, and Mary Magdalene is embracing the cross. Their grief is expressed through their physical action. Mary is suffering as a mother who lost her child, John is suffering as one who lost a dear friend, and Mary Magdalene is suffering as a woman who lost a lover. In it's entirety, this piece of art shows grief of death from different perspectives. The Jesus on the cross is not physically strong. He is tiny. He appears to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

While the surface of Norman Mailer's The Naked and the Dead centers around World War II, its focus is on "the conflict...between the mechanistic forces of the 'system' and the will to individual integrity" (Waldron 273). The ultimate domination by the 'machine' makes for a very depressing, hopeless novel. Mailer explores this conflict mainly in the interactions between General Cummings and Lieutenant Hearn, and although less extensively through their lower ranked counterparts, Sergeant Croft and Private Red Valsen. It is in these interactions that The Naked and the Dead makes a statement about not only war, but society. It is while he is planning this attack that he and Hearn have their own intellectual battle. Hearn loses. Cummings then assigns him to Croft's platoon, as leader of the reconnaissance mission going behind enemy lines. Croft is infuriated that he has been taken out of his position of power, and eventually kills Hearn. By the time that the platoon returns to the main base, the island has been taken, but not by Cummings plan. • 15. Poem Vs Short Story The essential difference between a poem and a short story is the difference of scope. So, poems are short and they, briefly, tell you how the author is feeling about in a few words, while short stories could be written by the author at any moment with a plot, themes, character development, setting etc. The play "Naked Lunch" by Michael Hollinger is about a man named Vernon and a female named Lucy. They used to be a couple but they are no longer together. When they were sitting down to eat, Vernon started asking her the reasons of why she did not want to eat steak. He was making a big problem of it. Vernon finally ends up making Lucy eat the steak by yelling at her. Consequently, she ate the steak because she was scared. A play can be long or short, it all depends on what the author wants to transmit to his or her audience. The time is essentially important. In a play the characters need to talk each other to have an act; on the other hand, in short stories the narrator explains the situation, he is the one making and telling us the story. Scott Fitzgerald, a famous novel and short story author, wrote in his novel Tender is the Night. This statement can be related to Adolf Hitler and the Nazis, as they had become so terrible and set on annihilating the Jews that they became ruthless, inhuman people. Consequently, the dehumanization of the Nazis caused the Jews to become dehumanized and treated as though they were animals. In the memoir Night, Eliezer Wiesel shows how German Nazis carried out the dehumanization of Jews in concentration camps, and how rehumanization was ultimately impossible. First of all, the Nazis were the main proponents in dehumanizing the Jews. To illustrate, there was "an infinitely long train, composed of roofless cattle cars, [and] the SS shoved [them] inside, a hundred per car..." (97). They Nazis were not concerned about the care and treatment of the Jews. The guards packed the prisoners inside the cattle cars as if they were a bunch of unnamed animals getting ready to go to the slaughterhouse, and the Jews eventually became those unnamed animals. There are two ways to use retroviral vectors in gene therapy, introduce the vector intravenously, or removing the patient's tissue, inserting the vector in a lab setting, then replacing the tissue. One of the flaws using the retroviral vector method in gene therapy is that integrase enzyme(responsible for integrating the retroviral DNA into the host cell) can insert the gene in any position in the genome. Massacre Of The Innocents By Judith Beheading Though I do not know the background of Massacre of the Innocents, this painting seems to depict a group of men fighting with a group of women over babies, and when the men manage to steal these babies, the men kill them. Besides the death of children, the most peculiar aspect of this painting is the fact that the men and the babies are naked and the women seem to be losing their clothes. The different person's level of clothing can tell a lot about what is going on. Leaving the men without clothing seems to give the painter a chance to define their muscles in a way that would have been difficult with them clothed. Even though some of the women's bodies can be seen, they are not as well defined as the men's making it apparent who is stronger. Pairing this with Judith Beheading Holofernes, nakedness can also show a lack of power. Holofernes was supposed to be a very powerful man, but after being tricked by Judith, he meets his demise by what could possibly be his own sword. Without his armor and wits, he has no power or ability to defend himself and is killed by someone who would typically be seen as the least powerful character. This meaning is not necessarily depicted in Saturn Devouring His Son where both Saturn and his son are without clothing though there seems to be a type of animal skin around Saturn's waist while the child he is chewing on lacks all clothing. In line three, the reader can hear the sound imagery of the "stuttering rifles' rapid rattle". The word "anger" in line 2 also emphasizes the destructive hatred of war. "Choirs of wailing shells" is a powerful metaphor in line 7 contrasting the world of war and the world of God. For the rest of the poem various religious images abound. For example, the word candles would call to mind the church candles, but they also mean the candles lit in rooms where coffins lie. "Holy glimmers of goodbyes" (line 9) combines religious imagery with the idea of death. In the pallor half rhyme of line 11, these two words combine in one line to show the seriousness of the situation. Young people are dying in war, and it is tragic. The "flowers" of line 11 are also a double–edged sword. Flowers are given on very happy, momentous occasions, but they are also in abundance at solemn occasions like funerals. Furthermore, Owen compares the events of war to traditional burial rituals and describes how those who die in war do not receive proper funerals. Tess is a young, impoverished girl who seeks out her wealthy relatives to help her poor family. • 27. What Is The Theme Of The Morgue Scene In Thérèse Raquin, Émile Zola uses specific scenes in order to convey and communicate explicit concepts from which the reader can extrapolate key themes in the novel, and the Morgue scene of Chapter XIII is an excellent example of this. Such scenes also offer a comprehensive depiction of the times and the Morgue scene gives us a slice of Parisian life during the 19th century. Across the span of this chapter, Zola's unflinching depiction of the morgue, the bodies lying on the slabs, and most importantly, his meticulous illustration of those who visit the morgue for titillation or other reasons, impose profound connotations of Parisian society in that period. One of the reasons for such a realistically lifelike extract was Zola's deliberate effort ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Zola regarded Manet as one of the "masters of the future" and defended him against harsh critics, as he strongly believed in the way Manet expressed himself in his paintings. Manet's "Olympia", in particular, generated intense scandal due to its sexual connotations and many disapproved of the painting. However, Manet's talent motivated Zola to include crude sexuality and painterly technique in his writing. In truth, the theme of sexuality permeates the entire novel, even in the Morgue scene; Zola's portrayal of the coarse primitiveness of human nature is again evident when the "gangs of kids" come in "stopping only by women's bodies" to "stare impudently at the naked breasts". This is a perversely disturbing spectacle for youngsters to see, but Zola approaches it matter–of–factly, commenting without irony that "It is in the Morgue that young street urchins have their first mistress". This graphic image of the exposed breasts creates an abhorrent atmosphere for the reader, signifying an objectification of women during that time as this piece of writing can be seen as patriarchal novel. Zola furthers this impression by describing the Morgue as "a show that anyone can afford, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 28. Cancer And Its Effects On The Human Body Mole Rats Cancer Immunity Daniel Howard Bio 4920 10/15/15 One of the deadliest diseases known man, cancer, is responsible for every one out of every four deaths in the United States. Worldwide, there are more than 10 million new cancer cases per year, and cancer is the cause of approximately 12% of all deaths (Silvera & Rohan, 2007). This count is rising and will continue to do so as scientists and researchers claim that there is no cure yet, just treatment. So, what exactly is cancer and how does it work? Cancer can arise virtually anyplace in the human body, which consists of trillions of cells. Generally, human cells mature and divide to create new cells as the body needs them. Whether it is from damage or aging, cells eventually die and new cells take their place. However, when cancer develops, this systematic process becomes disrupted. As cells become more and more abnormal, old or damaged cells live when they should die, and new cells form when they are not needed (Doll & Peto, 1981). These new cells are able to divide without stopping which can eventually lead to abnormal growths called tumors. Many cancers form tumors. Tumors are essentially just masses of tissue that can arise throughout the majority of the body. There are two different types of tumors that are important when in comes to cancer. There are malignant tumors and benign tumors. Benign tumors do not typically spread and when removed, they do not normally grow back. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Through her aperture lines, we can facilely optically discern that Mrs. Putnam is a very manipulative and assertive woman, who believes in witchcraft, as she instantly believes that Betty's quandary has been caused by witchcraft. As far as Mr. Putnam is concerned, albeit his introductive description states "a well–to–do, hard–handed landowner, near fifty", it does not tell us much about him. • 30. Influence And Effect Natural Selection Has On Rabbits The Influence and Effect Natural Selection Has On Rabbits Introduction Years ago Charles Darwin created the theory of natural selection. He attempted to explain how evolution worked, and his theory is now regarded as correct. Natural selection states that animals with traits that are better suited to their environment will survive and reproduce more. This would explain how evolution works. Groups of animals with the most beneficial traits survive and are able to reproduce. While the other group has difficulty surviving and would therefore reproduce less. The variation between that type of animal would come from a random mutation which turned out to be useful. An animal may get a mutation which is either beneficial or disadvantageous to the organism (1). As time progresses there are a larger amount of animals with the beneficial trait, while there is a lot less animals with the older trait. Natural selection correlates to the phrase "survival of the fittest" meaning that animals with beneficial traits will survive, while those without will die (2). Theoretically, this could lead to an entire change of the population; leaving only the group that can survive easily and produce more offspring. The purpose of the lab executed was to see what would happen to the traits of rabbits over generations as alleles in the new rabbits change. In the lab there were two types of rabbits––furred rabbits and naked rabbits. Having fur was the dominant trait and no fur was the recessive ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 32. Slave Market Symbolism It is interesting because at first glance the painting seems to be promoting the objectification of women for the sake of male pleasure. However, Gerome's paintings of the slave market scenes were the center of many controversies because they challenged the very persisting male dominated conventions of his time. It contaminated the hypocritical thinking that in art, we could view a woman's body solely through a pure, aesthetic angle. Male artists during the nineteenth–century typically illustrated women as objects that wanted to be seen or consumed. However, these slave market scenes forced male viewers to confront the cruel and wicked nature that follows through with the objectifying of women. The woman in A Roman Slave Market does not want to be seen. Instead, she is standing in front of an all–male audience naked, vulnerable, and ashamed. A slave to the critical gazes of the men trying to buy her, knowing all the while she will soon have to live out the rest of her days as a slave to one of them. These implied undertones offered a very different representation of female nudity. To be naked is to be oneself. To be nude is to be seen naked by others and yet not recognized for oneself. A naked body has to be seen as an object in order to become a nude. ( The sight of it as an object stimulates the use of it as an object.) Nakedness reveals itself. Nudity is placed on display. To be naked is to be without disguise. To be on display is to have the surface of one's own skin, the hairs of one's own body, turned into a disguise which, in that situation, can never be discarded. The nude is condemned to never being naked. Nudity is a form of dress. In Gerome's A Roman Slave Market the female slave's back is facing towards the viewer. This raises the question; how do the female slave's shame and despair come across to the viewer if her face is not even visible? As mentioned earlier on, the viewer is forced to assume the vantage point of the next slave waiting to be sold on the stage. With that in mind, one can only assume that this nude woman is not an object longing to be looked at. Instead, in shame she is burying her face in her two arms which are firmly held together in a triangular shape. The triangular ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Reflection Of Taking A Walk In this poem, the overall speaker, taking a walk one evening on a crowded city street, starts off referring to his environment with neutrality, in an objective though slightly foreboding tone. Soon, he encounters a lover singing to his beloved about how his love remains never ending and eternal. However, this song becomes contradicted by the city clocks, which offer a more solemn yet realistic point of view regarding life and love. The poem ends with the overall speaker, speaking with a grim tone influenced by the clock's depiction of love, referring to love in the same ominous tone, suggesting agreement with the clocks. • 34. Poetry Appreciation Appreciation is something that hardly happens without being aroused by an outside force. In other words, people don't commonly express their love unless they have a reason to. In Shakespeare's poem "The Time of Year Thou Mayst in Me Behold", the speaker is dying and asks his audience to reflect upon their own lives in order to appreciate them more. Shakespeare employs simple metaphors to demonstrate that as death draws nearer, love increases. The sonnet's first comparison is that of a tree that's leaves are scarce because it is the winter time. The leaves fall and the tree appears naked and dead; its time of prospering is over. This tree is much like the dying man in that as his internal workings slow down, his outer appearance changes. Shakespeare's next analogy of the man is a sunset that has "fadeth in the west" (6). A sunset is one of the most striking images that the earth can conjure up. The man has shined like the sun all his life, but now that he approaches his own twilight, he'll be taken by the darkness. The final metaphor is different because it speaks of being consumed by that which was helpful during life. The "glowing of such fire" no longer nourishes and strengthens as it did when he was young (9). It now mercilessly burns him in ignorance it is killing that which keeps it ... The French Revolution effected the way Europeans used to think giving of the sense of hope and liberty from monarch's or nobles. Thanks to the theories of radical journalists and politicians whom started to publish their thoughts about the French monarchy government, and the leaders of the corrupted government people started to speak more freely about the aristocrat class. One Jean–Paul Marat had been one of those journalists who would speak and write his thoughts about the French monarchy he played a very important role in the making of the French Revolution. However, the amount trouble one gets to speak freely two hundred years ago differs from the modern–day freedom of speech one gets; and Marat's radicalism against the French monarchy head resulted in his death. As a result, Marta's death grams the attention of two artists that try to capture the moment of Marat's death by drawing a portrait of his death. The first artist to draw a portrait of Marat's death was a French artist Jacques– Louis David in 1793 who named the painting The Death of Marat. For example, when Dr. Frank 'N' Furter deliberately extends the word "anticipation" during the song 'Sweet Transvestite', the audiences are prepared to yell "Say it!". The audience also has opportunities to use their props, for instance during the wedding scene in the very beginning, the audience sprinkles rice on the newlywed couple. After the wedding scene, on the ringing of the bells, the audience blow bubbles while Brad and Janet have a romantic conversation. Other examples include covering their heads with newspapers and spraying water using squirt guns on Brad and Janet during the re–enacting of the stormy night, wearing gloves as Dr. Frank wears his while revealing the story of Rocky's creation and wearing party hats during the guest dinner. The yelling of particular lines and use of props varies from production to production, but these are classic examples of breaking the fourth wall, i.e. the imaginary wall between audiences and stage actors. People looking for a cathartic release enjoy shouting lines as the play unfolds. The on–screen version does not facilitate such interaction between the performers and the viewers. Gothic Conventions in The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter The Gothic is often distinguished by an atmosphere of terror, darkness, mystery, the unexplained and the transgression of boundaries. This essay will attempt to dissect how Angela Carter uses Gothic conventions in the passage taken out of her novel, 'The Bloody Chamber'. One of the most predominant conventions manipulated here is that of a dark and mysterious atmosphere. Throughout the passage the feeling of terror prevails. This is first started by the protagonist's taking of a "forbidden key". This stirs up a feeling of disquiet, as it implies a certain degree of prohibition and disapproval towards her task. She later enforces that her bravery is somewhat foolish ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This gives the idea that urbanity cannot touch the place; technology is invalid there, and hence adding to the obscurity of the atmosphere. She then adds that the castle was "adrift" and it "floated…at (her) orders". This gives the story a fantastical twist. By adding an element of magic and the supernatural, Carter has sowed the seed of doubt in the mind of the reader as to the credibility of the story. It is a blurring of boundaries, where the surreal and reality cannot be made mutually exclusive. This idea of the supernatural is later picked up again in a painting, "Rape of the Sabines", where the focuses of the picture "suggested some grisly mythological subject". Here, the supernatural strikes terror as well, displaying itself in a horrific, but at the same time, erotic, manner. This act of sexual brutality plays a role in creating the tension of the atmosphere. Also, this is where inanimate objects are put in a sexual light – "rich breast of a woman", "naked sword", "naked stone". This could be because the writer is trying to suggest that in the castle, everything is stripped down to its bare elements – everything is in its primal state, just as sex is a primal desire, which will lead the protagonist to strip away the "garments" of her innocence; the heart of Man is corrupt. This alludes to the Freudian theory of the Superego, the Ego and the Id. The Id is the centre of Man, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
