3. Sexism is a problem that has been identified in
schooling in not just Australia, but many countries
around the world. The Melbourne Declaration states
that teachers must “provide all students with access
to high-quality schooling that is free from
discrimination based on gender, language, sexual
orientation, pregnancy, culture, ethnicity, religion,
health or disability, socioeconomic background or
geographic location.” Ministerial Council on
Education, Employment, Training and Youth Affairs
(2008).

“The most accurate predictor of a student's
achievement is not income or social status but
the extent to which that student's family is able
to create a home environment that encourages
learning, express high expectations for their

become involved in their children's education.”
