Choice Programs in the Surrey School District

      Discovery Elementary School

Jasmin Ring Education 100W
What is Discovery Elementary?

 A public program in the SSD which is available to all

students free of charge, regardless of catchment area.

 Established in 1973 by staff and parents

 Early development of school was based on the principles

of Adlerian Psychology and the qualities needed for a

 democratic society.
Discovery’s Adlerian Approach

 Provide support through
Encouragement meetings
 Offer positive choices and
solutions to problems

                        • Correct misbehaviour while
                        respecting the child
                        • Facilitate independence,
                        responsibility, and resourcefulness
Question One

 Is self-evaluation a reliable reporting method for
children at the elementary level? Is this method
more informative than traditional report cards?
The Learning Environment
Question Two

 Do you believe that competition in the classroom
(created by achievement charts and letter grades) is
           an essential motivational tool?
The Classroom Setting
Question Three

 Do you think multi-age classes are detrimental to
student success? Why or why not?
Discovery and Homework

 Discovery believes that homework is work to be
accomplished at home, not school work.
 Instead of assigning traditional homework, students
and their families are encouraged to discover
learning opportunities on their own, such as theme-
related research or visits to the library.
Question Four

 Do children benefit from learning in an environment
without tests and quizzes or does this leave them not
               prepared for high school?
Reporting Practices
Question Five

 Should the methods and practices used at Discovery
be applied to other schools? Is this the modern type
 of schooling our society’s require?
The End
