2. What is GATT?
The General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) was a multilateral
agreement regulating international trade. It was negotiated during
the United Nations Conference on Trade and Employment and was the
outcome of the failure of negotiating governments to create
the International Trade Organization (ITO). GATT was signed in 1947, took
effect in 1948, and lasted until 1994; it was replaced by the World Trade
Organization in 1995.

4. GATT and it’s impact on
Indian Pharma Industry
 After signing of GATT agreement, India has lost it’s IP advantage
 India will also now have to follow product patent
 India is unable to supply commercial qty of API for US Market
 Indian companies will face:
 Prohibitive cost for patented products
 Re-colonisation
 Export hurdles for Indian manufacturer
 USA interventions

5. Opportunity for Bangladesh
 Bangladesh is still free to produce such API with non-infringing process and
grab this vast opportunity
 For supply of commercial quantity many Indian giants are looking for
partners who are API manufacturing company in Bangladesh, who can produce
API under GMP condition and supply to customers worldwide
 Many Indian API manufacturer will transfer API technology and will help
settling up product to the Bangladeshi site
