What do we mean by assistive technology? An umbrella term for any device or system that allows individuals to perform tasks they would otherwise be unable to do or increases the ease and safety with which tasks can be performed  		 World Health Organisation

Personal computing developments since 2006 2010 student intake have been exposed to these tools at home & school
Technology Trends affecting AT Portability & mobile devices Anywhere computing; anywhere internet  access ,[object Object],New ways of paying ,[object Object],Touch interface ,[object Object],[object Object]
Use of mobile technology in the real world… Recent survey of 238 users: 17% said their mobile was more important than their computer 85% said their phone had a calendar of which 74% said they used it 62% accessed the internet on their phones Over 78% interacted with text files in someway on their phones
Graduate skills & assistive technology use Assistive technology usage is higher when they receive training on it Assistive technology use needs to be embedded within students coping strategies For disabled students to gain graduate skills they must…. Embed assistive technology within their graduate skills AND understand how to use those skills with the latest technology in the workplace
We can’t tie students to their desks to use their assistive technology when the world is moving on…..

  2. Context aware computing involves a range of technologies to capture context information. These could include for example: accelerometers to interpret movement (eg to convert a display from landscape to portrait depending on orientation); sensors to record heat, light, pressure, humidity; location aware technologies such as GPS; and identification technologies such as RFID
