newly formed United States found itself thrust in the middle of this struggle. In the early part of
the century Napoleon was on a mission to once again establish a mighty French empire of early

With Britain still establishing colonies in the west and gaining dominance over the seas with their
naval abilities, France was looking for ways to stop Britain. France began forming alliances with
the third player in the game, Russia. With the addition of the Russians France had Britain reeling
and worried about a possible invasion and defeat. France, by adding Russia had tipped the scales in
its favor, and forced Britain to use its navy that it had begun to build up. Britain began to employ a
naval blockade of the European mainland, to stop all incoming and outgoing trade. With this tactic
employed France employed the same tactic and this is where the American claim of neutrality was
violated. With both Britain and France mandating that any trade ship must first pass through their
ports or be subject acts of hostility, America was forced into a no win situation. The United States
who continued to try to remain neutral and continue trade with both countries, found itself thrown
right in the middle of this age long battle. The United States and the British Royal Navy had several
encounters, and after several ships being stopped for search and some even eventually seized,
America began to develop an even stronger feeling of distrust and hatred for the British government.

The inability to distinguish Americans from non–Americans due to a wide spread of use of false
identity led to frequent impressments of Americans that had never been British. This became a
major grievance.
The United States attempted to change the European policies by the Embargo Act of 1807, after the

The Winner of the War of 1812 There are many conflicting viewpoints of the war of 1812. Both
sides claim it as a victory but only one side can win a war. The war of 1812 isn't a very well
known war throughout the world but it has been a very important one to the countries and people
involved. The war was an issue of the U.S. wanting land and seeing an opportunity to have North
American Britain while Britain was at war with Napoleon. The U.S. also wanted to trade with
everybody as Great Britain was stopping the U.S. from trading with enemies in Europe such as

In Battles such as Thames and Baltimore, the United States conquered the British and Canadian
troops. In the Battles of Chippewa and Horseshoe Bend, the American militia defeated the Swanee
and Creek Natives respectively. They were against the Natives because of their alliance with the

they had truly won the war. This led to a new pride in their nation. They know felt more like one
people, and the basic American ideals and principles further developed during the "Era of Good
Feelings." Another benefit of the War of 1812 was the growth of American industry. The Embargo
Act before the war and the blockade during the war had halted American trade. Because of the halt
in trade New England merchants and investors started to become entrepreneurs. Many factories and
companies were started during and after the war. The textile industry led the way with its large
mills. Also during the war there was a greater demand for goods and equipment to be used by the
army. This caused an increase in business in some factories and as a result more job openings. This
industrialization reduced American dependence from the rest of the world. This meant that other
countries could not fully control the prices they charged for their manufactured goods, therefore
strengthening America's power. The creation of factories also caused the government and private
investors to make internal improvements such as roads and canals for the easier transportation of

Revolutionary War, the British continued to harass and mettle in American affairs. While Madison
was seeking reelection the War Hawks in Congress had declared war on Britain in June 18. On paper
the rag–tag American was seen as incapable of defeating the superior British forces for a second
time. However this war would have an unexpected results as neither side would be the "victory".

In 1807 Thomas Jefferson would declare for the halt of American trade with Europe with the
Embargo Act. However this would hurt Americans because they had cut off their only source of
trade and thus the Embargo Act was replaced with the Non–Intercourse Act of 1809. This act stated
that the US will trade with everyone but the French and the British, but that they would resume
trade with them as soon as these two stop violating American rights. The stubborn powers won't
budge leading to Macon's Bill #2. This said the US would trade with everyone but would stop
trade with one of the two powers if one of them stop violating American's rights. Britain would act
on this quickly to snubbed French trade. However by the war's end the American had began to
rely on American made good rather than on good manufacture in Europe and thus they gain a

Madison was born in Orange County, Virginia in 1751. He attended the College of New Jersey,
which is now well known as Princeton. Madison did many significant things both before and after he
was in office. He participated in the framing of the Virginia Constitution, served in the Continental
Congress and he was also a leader in the Virginia Assembly. One of his major contributions was a
ratification to the Constitution. He wrote the Federalist essays along with Alexander Hamilton and
John Jay. In writing that, many people then began referring to him as the "Father of the

world's major naval power would do very little to help restore their shipping. In the beginnings of
the war, America was not too successful. The choices of the troops and the generals were not too
smart, most of them being militia and volunteers. Also, a general by the name of William Hull, who
was a Revolutionary War veteran, had plans to invade Canada through Detroit. Instead of him doing
just that, he decided to surrender his army and Detroit to a much smaller British and Native
American army. General Hull was then court–marshaled and convicted. Luckily, president Madison
saved his life, saying that he did not deserve death because of his previous services to the country.
There were many other attempts to invade Canada but none of them were successful. Once the war
had gotten its start, America began making victories. At one point, America's confidence level was
through the roof because of a few naval victories that had been made. There were three American
