The chemical poisoning in water have a great impact on humans because it can cause brain damage
and physical deformities in unborn fetuses. Pollution disrupts the natural food chain as well.
Pollutants such as lead and cadmium are eaten by tiny animals. Later, these animals are consumed by
fish and shellfish, and the food chain continues to be disrupted at all higher levels. Eventually,
humans are affected by this process as well. People can get diseases such as hepatitis by eating
seafood that has been poisoned. Besides, Water pollutants introduce abnormal conditions (harmful
chemicals, changes in water temperatures) into water bodies, disrupting existing ecosystems and can
potentially contribute to reducing biodiversity in that affected area – one of the effects of water
pollution. For example, the discharge of heated–up water from thermal and nuclear power plants into
a river can cause problems for aquatic organisms, which are fairly used to specific temperatures.
The increase in water temperatures could increase their metabolic rates and hence their need for
food. This could eventually lead to the depletion of food sources in that water region and in turn
cause a reduction in species population in that water region. Besides thermal pollution, water could
also be polluted via the entry of acidic substances into the water bodies through rivers, seas and
oceans. The effects of water pollution by this process, known as

* Sample: The sample is limited to a small proportion of working professionals in Western Sydney
and may not accurately reflect the population of working professionals. 2.0 Literature Review "It is
only in our decisions that we are important" –Jean–Paul Sartre Before commencing a discussion on
this quote it may be beneficial to gain an understanding of the key words or concepts suggested
by it. Firstly, the two key words are 'Decisions' and 'Important'. A decision can be said to be an
"opinion, position or judgement reached after consideration"1. Important is defined as "Of great
significance or value and strongly affecting the course of events or the nature of things;
significant"2 and this is exactly the message Sartre is trying to convey. Our decisions can shape
the course of our lives for the better or the worse so the decisions we make about the paths we
choose in life can determine the state of our existence and define who we are as human beings and
ultimately give us a sense of achievement or loss. A decision is a judgement reached after
"consideration" that is, 'why' do we make the decisions we make. It is important to understand this
process of decision making and various cognitive theories have helped us do this. Jean Paul Sartre
was a existentialist philosopher who like other such philosophers, attempted to characterise man by
his will, choices and decisions he makes

Listening Process Essay
Listening is one of the most powerful tools of communication and is a process that is used to
receive, convey a meaning, and respond to both verbal and nonverbal messages. It is what we
choose to do and it requires more work than speaking. Oftentimes, people simply misunderstand the
difference between listening and hearing. Hearing is a passive process that takes in sounds and
noises and listening is what you choose to do. This selective process includes 5 phases that can be
acquired for us to become effective listeners in the future. The 5 phases are attending, understanding,
remembering, critically evaluating (listening), and responding. Once the 5 different areas are
understood, we will become aware of what needs to change and how we...show more content...
The last two factors of attending are to resist tuning out and avoid interruptions. When it comes to
tuning out and interrupting, I have a huge dilemma while communicating with others. Back in high
school, that was one thing that I was good at; tuning out. I even still struggled with it coming into
college. In my first semester at Nassau Community College, a student asked me what we had to
get done on a class assignment and I had completely tuned out because I got easily distracted by
thinking about what I needed to do when I got home. I knew that tuning out was not a pleasant idea
and I should change that before it got out of hand. I keep a constant reminder that blocking mixed
thoughts and distractions will accredit me to improve in this area of the listening process. Avoiding
interruptions has always been an issue and still is to this day. It only occurs when I'm with family
and/or friends but never at school or with teachers. During an encounter with a friend, she was
talking about how we don't spend enough time hanging out and after a single minute, I interrupted
her with a tangential response. Interrupting interferes with attending and tends to be a barrier for
most school–going students. If we want to prevent interruptions from happening, turn–taking should
be greatly put into consideration. The next time I communicate with family or friends, I need to keep
in mind to patiently wait until it's my turn to speak.
The second phase of the

Essay on Gerrymandering
English 1101
January 22, 2014
Gerrymandering
Gerrymandering is defined as the establishment of boundaries of voting districts with the main
objective of determining the partial or complete outcome of elections. Gerrymanders are designed
with the main objective of insuring the defeat of specific individuals or electing political allies.
There are a number of objectives of gerrymandering. Gerrymandering is usually carried out in order
to allow for the reelection of incumbents or for the party in power to win more seats in an election
than the number to which its percentage of the total vote properly entitles it. This only serves to
subvert the will of the people since it denies them the amount of voting power that they are entitled
...show more content...
The resulting districts are normally referred to as gerrymanders and they are composed of
pro–incumbents and partisans. Partisan gerrymandering involves the redrawing of political lines in
order to favor a given political party. Incumbent gerrymandering involves the redrawing of
boundaries in a bipartisan manner that is aimed at benefiting the incumbents on both sides of the
aisle (Snider 2012).
The gerrymandering process allows the majority party within a given state to maximize the number
of seats it can win in the future elections. This leads it into creating as many districts as possible
where it constitutes the majority. By doing this, those who support the minority parties are packed
into the remaining few districts. This results in more electoral security for the minority party and
less electoral security for the members of the minority parties. It also produces greater homogeneity
within the districts while reducing competition for the house seats. Apart from the positive effects of
gerrymandering, there are a number of negative effects associated with partisan gerrymandering.
This process results in more competitive districts when compared to the non competitive districts and
this in turn ambiguously affects polarization. Partisan gerrymandering also affects the state
legislative electoral competitiveness as it has severe partisan biases. Excessive partisan
gerrymandering is the violation of the equal protection clause since it consigns the

Thesis: Recycling
Recycling Thesis Statement Recycling is valuable and is one of the most important movements
to be encouraged in the 21st century. Introduction Recycling can be described as "the process of
recovering and reusing waste products from household use, manufacturing, agriculture, and
business and thereby reducing their burden on the environment" ("Recycling," 2009). The
concept of recycling popped up during World War I and World War II when the world faced a
shortage of essential commodities and this lack of necessary materials led to the collection of
required stuff. In the contemporary period, recycling has become a worthwhile and meaningful
process that ensures environmental benefits. The waste management programs now employ
recycling as a major requisite ("Recycling," 2009). Recycling A Vital Need of the Time For the
past many years, the basic form of recycling consisted of direct recycling by manufacturers of
surplus, imperfect or malfunctioning materials. During the 1990s, however, indirect recycling also
became a major form of recycling. Indirect recycling is, in fact, the recycling of materials after
they are being consumed by the users. Regrettably, most solid waste has been made a part of
landfills or dumps after its deposition in such areas. Consequently, it has led to the filling up of
landfills and this dumping of wastes has led to a number of environmental problems. Recycling is
the solution to such disposal. It has been found out by the industries
