The LGBTQ Center is a great resource for not only the Carolina community but the Triangle area community. However there are still issues in regards to serving as ally’s. I want to thank Terri and Dani for challenging me to step out of my comfort zone and strongly encouraging I represent the LGBTQ Center at the org fair. I was uncomfortable…I got funny looks from parents when they realized this was the “gay table” and brushed me off and the valuable information I had for their students. This simple experience has helped my understand what its like to hide one’s authentic self based off of how one might not know how they are perceived. Has anyone ever been in a situation where they were uncomfortable. It is our role as student affairs professionals to serve as allies for our students and meet them where they are with the programs we develop, services we provide, and mentorship relationships we nurture. The LGBTQ Center has great resources but it doesn’t matter if those resources are reached for fear of being seen.
Based off of the internship sessions and informal meetings with supervisors I have inferred that some major issues facing higher education Housing and residence life is , the availability health services, developing inclusive staff, adoption, providing spousal support, diverse student populations including students who identify as trans sexual, providing employment that is non discriminatory, spousal hiring, meeting the needs of military servicepersons, and an awareness of the right marriage and all its privileges and those excluded.
While working in the Office of Residence Education I was able to participate in the more administrative side of residence life. Previously, I was simply an RA and didn’t completely understand the scope of the functions of the office. Thanks Annice for challenging me and providing me the opportunity to work on the development of the RA staff.
I have some understanding and awareness of student affairs as I prepare to enter my graduate program at Bowling Green State University, but I am hoping that this experience will support my goals of becoming a student affairs professional. Like many students, when a new student comes to campus they are excited, anxious, nervous, unsure, and under developed. It is the purpose of the institution and its functional areas to provide opportunities for student success and personal and academic development.
Getting involved in something, anything will help support student success and creating a feeling of connectedness to the institution.
As student affairs professionals, we will encounter obstacles that we didn’t anticipate, like student violence or other crisis’. I must seek out opportunities to learn how to address these issues and strive to be proactive instead of reactive.
Colleges and universities are growing. To meet the needs of a growing student population, an institution and its administrators must have a strategic plan in place. Where there is no plan or vision there is no goal. Strategic planning is just as important to the success of a institution or department as student enrollment.
Diversity at institutions needs to be reflective of the global society we live in. We must aim to have a diverse staff and workforce that emulates what students will face when they leave the institution. Student affairs needs to be intentional in creating opportunities for students to learn about other cultures, experiences, perspectives, and understandings regardless of ability, SES, sex, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, military service status, spiritual practice, or age.
Collaboration is the key to a successful student affairs experience. Collaboration not only brings other voices and perspectives to the conversation but provides a point of view that may be unconsciously neglected. In trying economic times, collaboration provides an opportunity to share resources.
Thank you for participating and selecting me for the 2009 NUFP internship experience at UNC. I have learned a lot, made great relationships, and confirmed that this field is where my passion is. I hope to remain connected to you and there will always be a spot in my heart for the “other Carolina, because South of NC, everyone knows the real Carolina is the University of SOUTH Carolina. Go Cocks! Go Tarhills!
