Comparing conventions of real and fictional magazines
1. QUESTION 1
In what ways does your media product use,
develop or challenge forms and conventions of
real media products?
2. A REAL MAGAZINE Title and large
letter to show
who the artist
is that the
article is
about. It also
incorporates
styles from the
masthead
There is only one
photo that takes
up the whole
page, she looks
rather seductive
which could be
trying to attract
a male audience
or could relate to
her reputation.
As it’s black and
white, this links
to house style.
House Style – use of
limited colours
creates a housestyle
and links to the
masthead; in this
case: black , white
and red.
Text – as there’s a lot of text with no
qutations, it’s very informative. There
are three columns which are a
common magazine convention.
Page numbers – this magazine looks like
it has been photocopied and the page
numbers have been cut off. On the bottom
right hand side you can see an area which
looks like it contains the page numbers.
As the photo covers the whole left hand
page, there is, normally, no page number
on this side.
This magazine,
Kerrang!, features a
large quotation for
dramatic effect.
3. COMPARING A REAL MAGAZINE DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD TO MINE
I have used the
convention of large
quotes in my article
House Style – use of
limited colours
creates a house
style. I have used
black, white and
blue which links to
my cover.
Instead of using one
single image, I have
used three separate
images. I have not
stuck to my house style
of black, white and
blue; instead, I have
developed this
convention as I have
left the colours in thee
images. I think this
makes the photos
stand out and the
audience can connect
as it shows a variety in
her style.
Page numbers – I have used the page
numbers 3 and 4. I have developed the
“Q” magazine featuring Lady Gaga as I
have placed the page numbers on the
actual page as opposed to the one page. I
have been able to do this as the main
image does not cover the whol of page 3. I
have included these page numbers in my
contents.
Title –I have developed the title
from the “Q” mgazine as instead
of using just the artist’s name, I
have incorporated a link to the
introduction of the article.
I have used a similar look as
the previous magazine by
incorporating this line that
separates the title from the
article itself.
I have used the common
convention of columns in
my magazine. I have
spread them across the
double page as I think this
means that readers don’t
feel like the article would
take a long time to read,
despite having a lot of
information. I feel that if
the columns were clusted
together there would
seem like a lot to read;
especially since I have 4
and a bit columns in total.
