3. Basic features of machine tools
Bed, structure of frame
Slides and slide ways
Spindle and spindle bearing
Power units
Transmission linkage
Work holding and tool holding elements
4.
5. Material and construction features
Beds bases column and frames of machine tools are generally
made from Cast Iron because of following advantages possessed
by Cast Iron:
High compressive strength .
Easily cast into intricate shape.
Better capacity to absorb vibrations
Possess good lubricating properties due to the presence of free
graphite in it.
Can be machined to fairly high degree of accuracy and
provide a fine surface finish.
Can be easily allowed with elements like Nickel, Chromium,
molybdenum etc. to increase its hardness.
Cost is fairly low.
6. Various Bed sections
Lathe beds of ordinary design consisting
of two girders laid, side by side connected
at intervals by cross beam as shown in
figure
Saddle rest on outer part of the flat slide
ways.
Tailstock rest on inner side of slide ways.
7. Various Bed sections
Figure shows lathe bed cross
section of American type
Saddle rest on 1-1
Tailstock rest on 2-2
Such provision of two separate
slide ways would prevent wear of
tailstock slides and also helps to
prevent coaxially of center.
