Long-Range Goals
Since the goal for the Wilkinson County School District is “ Higher Levels of Learning – Every
Student, Every Day”, each of the long-range goals for the Wilkinson County Middle High
School Media Center relates to increasing the level of achievement or learning of the students at
the respective schools served by the media center.
1. The Wilkinson County Middle High School Media Center will increase the level of student
learning by developing the library’s virtual facility in order to provide students access to a
variety of resources to support the curriculum.
a. Rationale: Based on the essential goal of the school library program of ensuring
equitable access to information as outlined in Empowering Learners (2009, p. 7), this
goal also correlates to the mission of the school in that it aims to increase the level of
learning and achievement of all students served by the media center by providing
them with the resources they need to master the standards set forth by the Common
Core and the teachers in the school. In order to accomplish this goal, the media center
must totally recreate the virtual facility, creating opportunities for students to enteract
with virtual information in a way to create “engaging learning experiences that meet
the individual needs” (2009, p. 8) of students. By individualizing instruction through
virtual facility maintenance and collaboration, teachers and librarians make learning
unique for each student so that those students develop their own personal
relationships with the curriculum, setting them up for success. .
2. The Wilkinson County Middle High School Media Center will increase the level of student
learning by providing students with education that promotes a community of students and
staff who are effective users of information and ideas.
3. SMP5: PROGRAM PLAN 3
a. Rationale: Based on the mission of the school library program as stated in
Empowering Learners (2009, p. 8), this goal strives to develop skills in learners that
are essential to educational success in middle and high schools and beyond. Not only
are students asked to collect and use information on standardized achievement tests,
but also for any number of tasks in any number of professions beyond middle and
high school. Oftentimes, students simply do not know how this is to be done. By
instilling in these learners a respect for information and ideas, the media center
provides them with a skill that will serve them well far after they leave the confines of
the schools served by the media center.
3. The Wilkinson County Middle High School Media Center will help to increase the level of
student learning over the next 3 years by creating a physical space that is more accessible to
individuals with disabilities.
a. Rationale: According to Empowering Learners (2009), one of the guidelines of the
school library media center is to “meet the diverse needs of all learners.” Currently
the SLMC is not meeting the diverse needs of all learners as well as it could be. In
order to accomplish this and engage all students in higher levels of learning, the
facility must be modified to accommodate learners with vision and mobility
impairments more easily.
4. The Wilkinson County Middle High School Media Center will help to increase the level of
student learning over the next 3 years by collaborating with content area teachers to integrate
the Standards for the 21st-Century Learner into instruction, using the Common Core
Crosswalk.
4. SMP5: PROGRAM PLAN 4
a. Rationale: This goal empowers learners by “providing leadership in the total
education program and advocating for strong school library programs as essential to
meeting local, state, and national education goals” (2009, p. 9). In order for anything
to be taken seriously and valued in the world of education today, it must be seen as
effective at increasing achievement. As a method not only to increase student
achievement, but as a method to increase the actual and perceived importance of the
school library media program, elevating test scores is of paramount importance. By
interweaving the AASL standards with the Common Core, which also focus on the
use of information and literacy across the curriculum, using the Crosswalk, the SLMP
guarantees a program that meets the ever-changing needs of its patrons and
stakeholders.
Long-Range Goals Objectives
(Short-Range Goals)
Activities Evaluation
Goal 1: The
Wilkinson County
Middle High School
Media Center will
increase the level of
student learning by
developing the
library’s virtual
facility in order to

policies.
Objective 1C:
Increase student use
of virtual learning
space:
Activity 1C: The
SLMS will monitor
student use of the
virtual learning space
by developing the
space through a tool
that counts the “hits”
or times the space is
accessed.
Evaluation 1C: Each
week, the SLMS will
access data by
checking the counter
to see if the usage is
increasing. This goal
is a goal that requires
constant monitoring
and is never truly
“met” for good.
Students must not
only use the virtual
space once to bring up
the hits, but make use
of the space an
integral part of their
educational
experience.
Goal 2: The
Wilkinson County
Middle High School
Media Center will
increase the level of
student learning by
providing students
with education that
promotes a
community of
students and staff who
are effective users of
information and
ideas..
Objective 2A:
Increase student
abilities in regard to
being an effective
user of information
Activity 2A: The
SLMS will
collaborate monthly
with teachers to
design and implement
instructional units that
encourage students to
use information
appropriately. At the
end of each
instructional lesson
and/or unit that
focuses on effective
information use, the

confidence in regard
to being an effective
user of information
Activity 2B:
The SLMS will
administer a survey at
the beginning of the
academic year and at
the end of the
academic year
assessing student
confidence towards
being an effective
user of information
Evaluation 2B: Each
year, the overall
student confidence
towards being an
effective user of
information should
increase. Data will be
collected to evaluate
this using an online
survey tool.
Presentation and
discussion of these
findings will occur at
leadership team
meetings to determine
the effectiveness of
the implementation of
the long-range goal
and determine if there
is a need for change.
Goal 3: The
Wilkinson County

collection placement
in order to take up
less physical space
with shelving.
Evaluation 3A:
Gradually, over the
course of the school
years, data will be
analyzed using reports
taken from Destiny,
showing the collection
size, and visual
inspection of the
library media center.
The size of the
collection should
decrease, while the
open physical space
should increase.
Objective 3B: The
SLMS will increase
the number of
holdings available for
patrons with visual or
sight impairments.
Activity 3B: When
ordering new items
and resources for the
library’s collection,
the SLMS will
procure more large-

into instruction, using
the Common Core
Crosswalk.
Objective 4A: The
SLMS will develop a
specific process for
implementing
collaboration between
teachers and the
SMLS.
Activity 4A1: The
SLMS will develop a
collaboration form
that documents the
desire for
collaboration.
Activity 4A2: The
SLMS will present
professional learning
to staff members on
using online
collaboration tools.
Evaluation 4A: In
order to evaluate this
objective, data will be
drawn from the
notebook containing
the collaboration
request forms and the
use of the online
collaboration tools.
Collaboration should
increase as the
teachers become
aware of a more
definite process.
Analysis will take
place monthly in
order to monitor if
further action is
required to meet the
goal.
Objective 4B: The
SLMS will
collaborate with
teachers from varying
grade levels and
content areas in order
to incorporate content
and skills relevant in
the 21st
century.
Activity 4B1: The
SLMS will
collaborate with
content area teachers
to plan integration of
the 21st
-Century
Learner standards into
instruction using the
Common Core
Crosswalk. This
integration supports
the Common Core’s
focus on use of
resources and
presentation of
information.
Evaluation 4B: The
collaboration between
the SLMS and the
content area teachers
will be documented in
the online lesson-
planning tool used by
the district. This will
be presented at
leadership team
meetings. This data
will be evaluated to
determine the
effectiveness of the
implementation of the
goal and its
objectives.
