2. John Scopes John was a 24 year old teacher in Dayton, Tennessee. He coached football at Rhea County High school and also substituted there as well.

What happened in Tennessee John Washington Butler, a Tennessee farmer, simply suggested that evolution didn’t need to be taught because he thought that evolution was, “dangerous.” The head of the World’s Christian Fundamentalists Association, William Bell Riley, lobbied state legislatures to pass anti-evolution laws and succeeded with the Butler Act.
4. How Scopes got involved A Union called the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) announced that they would pay anyone to challenge Tennessee and the Butler Act by teaching evolution. John was the one who stepped forward.
5. The Trial Scopes was found guilty and was ordered to pay a 100 dollar fine. But after a period of time the Tennessee Supreme Court overturned Scopes’ conviction.
6. What happened after The fundamentalist movement continued to spread. Rural people in the South and Midwest Kept with their religious beliefs.
