2. A Brief Biography of Maria Montessori
Born in Chiaravalle, Italy, Maria Montessori moved with her parents
to Rome when she was five. Montessori's father was an accountant in
the civil service and her mother was known as an educated woman
and passionate reader. In 1876, the six-year-old began her formal
education where she eventually broke traditional gender barriers in
education through the encouragement of her mother, who cared
deeply about academics.

Montessori was the first woman to enter the University of Rome's
Faculty of Medicine and one of the first women in Italy to achieve her
Doctor of Medicine. Her experience as a young physician at one of
Rome's asylums for mentally and emotionally challenged children
triggered her interest in teaching through nontraditional methods.

Montessori's achievements with the asylum's children led to
immediate recognition among her peers as well as the National
Pedagogical Congress. Her association with the National League for
Education became her turning point from medical practitioner to

around the world.
