In the 1980s, hip hop spread to the rest of the world, not just urban cities in the United States.
Recording studios became more widely available to artists. In 1979, "Rapper's Delight" from The
Sugarhill Gang was released, and is considered to be the first hip hop song to be recorded and
released to the public. New York City's radio station WKTU began playing hip hop songs in

Gangsta rap originated in the late 1980's. "Ice Cube (O 'Shea Jackson) of the rap group NWA
(Niggaz with Attitude) wrote the song "Gangsta Gangsta," and it shocked America with its violent,
sexist, and obscene lyrics. "Gangsta Gangsta" ushered in a new genre of hip–hop music called
gangsta rap, which became identified with Compton, a predominately black and Latino working–
class and working poor neighborhood in Los Angeles". Many people did not agree with the sexist
and indecent lyrics in gangsta rap even though the lyrics were telling the story of many people who
lived in this reality.

Music has always had an effect on people on their culture. From Jazz in the 1920's to Rap just
starting up in the late 1980's. Different genres of music have different effects on people and no genre
is specific to any culture. There are a variety of people that are affected by various genres of music
that you would least expect and it's helping expand the music industry greatly. I believe the most
influential genre of music in my opinion is Hip Hop/Rap.
Hip Hop/Rap started from block parties in New York City in the late 70's. MC's paid DJ's to
introduce them to crowds and to also to keep the crowds pumped up and entertained. The DJ's came
into play after each song and they were the ones to try and get the crowd involved and keep them
entertained. The Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight," released in 1979 and Kurtis Blow's "The
Breaks," released in 1980 opened up the Hip Hop industry and really got things going for Rap.
Kurtis Blows song hit top 5 and it also went gold. Hip hop and Rap started as a voice for the
African– American community but quickly came to represent an entire generation. From these
humble beginnings almost 40 years ago, a multi–billion dollar industry has grown.

Chang writes in his book about how hip hop connects with many different real world problem going
on politically and socially in many different places. He tells a story of a beaten and battered area of
South Bronx. In this small area there was no law or order since many jobs were lost and most of
what was left there were people of color from different parts of the world, including Puerto Rico and
Jamaica. Due to the lack of protection Chang tells us that gangs were created as a means of
protection from the junkies and other scavengers. Their way of dealing with things was very violent
in nature, later on when more and more gangs started popping up they became territorial. They
attacked other members who wore their "colors" on another gang's turf. South Bronx became a very
dangerous place full of nothing but youthful gangs and gang related violence. Socially it was the
lack of jobs and other necessities that led to the creation of hip hop. There became a treaty of sorts,
although its terms weren't really discussed, but the gangs decided instead of focusing on violence

Dictionaries, dialect is "a particular form of a language that is peculiar to a specific region or social
group" ("Dialect"), they decide on the type of message they want to convey to the listener through
the rap. The two rappers I have chosen to show the growth in Hip–hop language history, are
Kendrick Lamar and Snoop Dogg. Lamar is considered as an American influential rapper. Whereas,
the west coast godfather, Snoop Dogg, falls under the genre of gangsta rap. These West Coast
rappers are from the same area, but when it comes to Hip–hop, they seem to speak a different
language. The evolution of the world changes the topics discussed in Hip–hop, these two artists
promote similar messages in their music, such as gang affiliation, unity, and politics.
Snoop Dogg who is from Long Beach, California speaks a blend of gangsta and West Coast dialect
in his music, which has an urban feel relating to the streets. West Coast Rap took over the hip–hop

The song I chose for this comparison is "Gin and Juice". This song was originally released by Snoop
Dogg in 1993 and is performed with the traditional "West Coast Rap" sounds of the time. One
successful cover of this song was released by The Gourds in 1998, who performed the song in a
bluegrass/Alt. country style. One of the major differences between the two performances is the
timbre of the pieces. With his use of electronic, midi based instrumentation and his "laid back"

Hip–hop is engulfed with violence, mostly pertaining to the geographical backgrounds of artists and
rappers. The biggest rivalry is West Coast hip–hop vs. East Coast hip–hop. The headliners of this
rivalry, and most famous of all hip hop controversies, was the controversy surrounding the
Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur. These two rappers are enthroned as two of, if not the, greatest
hip–hop artists of all time. Christopher Wallace, known by his performing name "The Notorious
B.I.G." was from New York. Tupac Shakur, performance name just Tupac, was from California. Big
and Pac were actually really good friends before all of this West Coast/East Coast stuff started. It all
started with Tupac thinking that Biggie and his crew set up the 1994 robbery that he was a victim of
in New York. Tupac was shot that night, and being very ecstatic from being shot, blamed it on
Biggie. He didn't stop there. The feud between Biggie and Tupac would not stop. Tupac ran with the
idea that the shooting was a setup by Biggie; and Biggie, as much as he tried to make Tupac
understand, could not get through to him. That was not the end of the controversy. Biggie came later
released the very controversial song, "Who Shot Ya?", in which one of the lines is "Who shot ya?

It 's reality rap. It 's about what 's really going on." There has been a great injustice done to the form
of expression called rap. In essence rap is just lyrics over a basic beat or rhythm. Many members of
society today assume that rap is a dangerous and violent influence, however what they seem to be
ignorant of is the fact that rap music is actually beneficial. The majority of the world we live in
today has unjustly classified rap as a barbaric form of music, unfit for any decent human to listen to,
but the reality of the situation is, that people simply cannot accept the culture known as rap into
society. Nowadays, rappers such as Kanye, Soulja Boi, and Wiz Khalifa are receiving much
criticism about the way they portray their "hoodlum" lifestyle or the way they "encourage" violence
through their music, when in actuality they are venting about the unfair circumstances society has
forced them into. Listening to rap music and it's positive vibes is in fact beneficial based on
evidence which shows that consumption of rap music not only assists the listener in several ways,
but also aids the rapper. The form of music that we know as rap is heavily influenced by earlier
African American music forms. Modern day rap, originates from it's previous form of gangsta rap.

This was a unique case in African American history and one of the most compelling stories of
Compton in my opinion. Blacks were predominant in a suburban setting for one of the few times in
history. There was a very short window of overlapping segregation and black prosperity in the
United States, but Compton fulfilled that window. Black students did well in Compton and Compton
Community College became an excellent choice of education. During this time the first black mayor
and councilmen were elected. African Americans were beginning to break social barriers in
Compton. Compton took its most critical hit when deindustrialization struck. Manufactures followed
other industries in seeking to lower their tax burden, open new markets, and increase their plant size.
With more than one–third of Compton's population employed in manufacturing, the city broke its
social and economic threshold. The backlash stemmed from an increase in gang and drug related
activities. The aging middle–class was increasingly outnumbered by a troubled youth. Children, who
were once encouraged by their parents' success, were now hanging their heads. By 1970 the Bloods
and the Crips were created right outside of Compton. The "crack explosion" of the 1980's only
intensified crime, violence, and murder rates. From middle–class to neighborhood terror, the
prosperity relinquished by African Americans in Compton had promptly crumbled right in front of

Since the birth of Hip Hop in the 70s, controversial topics have always been one the forefront of
discussion. Media sources, like The Source, founded in 1988, have been a platform to broadcast the
triumphs and disasters that face the hip hop community has faced. In addition to displaying media,
they have made a platform where they also broadcast some of the letters that their audience wrote
back about their content in a section titled "Letters." With each decade since having its own set of
issues, the 90s was a time where the aftermath of black power movement, crack era, and other major
movements in the black community took place, fostering a variety of hip hop styles that resonated
with many walks of life. Throughout this decade, especially in 1995, there are prominent examples
in The Source of commercialization, regional feuds, controversy, consciousness, and how women
were viewed and valued at this time as well. Hip Hop was introduced to commercialization when
The Sugarhill Gang released Rapper's Delight in 1979. Since then, rap has taken off and been
commercialized for its sound, people, style, and message. "Shortly after its release, the song sold
fifty thousands copies a day, eventually going double platinum, reaching number four on Billboard's
pop singles chart and number forty–six on R&B chart" (Reeves,2008). Their success was
