The Hurt Locker War Is A Drug Quotes
In the film "The Hurt Locker" directed by Kathryn Bigelow, the theme of "war is a drug" is shown throughout the film. The film is about a bomb
squad tasked with disarming bombs planted roadside, in bundles and other more disturbing places in Iraq. However the film is really more focused on
what happens in the minds of soldiers under the constant adrenaline rush of war.
As I watched the movie I began to gain an understanding of the quote "The rush of battle is often a potent and lethal addiction, for war is a drug". This
quote was said by Chris Hedges an American journalist, activist and author. The quote plays a key part throughout thefilm and this is why it used as the
opening scene of film.
During the film Sergeant First Class William ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sanborn says " I'm not ready to die, James. (James) Well, you're not going to die out here, bro. (Sanborn) Another two inches? Shrapnel zings by;
slices my throat. I'll bleed out like a pig in the sand; nobody'll give a shit. I mean my parents? They'll care, but they don't count, man. Who else? I
don't even have a son." This shows that Sanborn is scared of what will happen next. He fears war and is afraid of the consequences of it. For Sanborn
war doesn't give him the same thrill as it does for James. In fact it gives him the opposite effect.
James and Sanborn show two very different sides of war. An example of this is when Sergeant J.T Sanborn and James are talking in the Humvee
after the final bomb scene. Sanborn says to James "But you realize every time you suit up, every time we go out, its life or death. You roll the dice,
and you deal with it. You recognize that don't you? (James) Yeah... Yeah, I do. But I don't know why.] I don't know, J.T. You know why I'm that
way? (Sanborn) No, I don't." This part of the movie reinforces the fact that James is addicted to war and the adrenaline of it. It also proves that
Sanborn is perplexed as to how James can find war so enjoyable, henceforth him not finding war addictive like James

The Hurt Locker is a film written by Mark Boal and directed by Kathryn Bigelow. It depicts several solders journeys while they are station at Camp
Victory in Iraq. TH title is GI slang for a severe injury, however it's commonly used in American sports like hockey. TO many this may have seemed
like another war movie but the use of sound and camera movement is what makes this movie so engaging.
The writer depicts the theme of how war can be an addiction, and how the soldiers must use the drug in order to survive war. This is emphasized
through the main character; not only through his actions but also symbolically through the cigarettes he smokes. This concept is more clearly shown at
the end of the film when James goes home and he cant stop thinking about the war. He ends up returning to battle, despite having to leave his son and
wife again. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The non–diegetic sounds would the music that plays. It's instrumental and uses long, low and eerie sounds to intensify scenarios. The music also
foreshadows what is going to happen, when the tempo of the music changes the viewer knows that something is going to happen. Depending on the
change to the music will allow the viewer to know if something good or something bad is going to happen. For example when the music starts to
get deeper and slower usually all the commotion slows down and the camera is only focused one solider. On the other hand when the music is fast
the scenes are usually full of movement and chaotic. The diegetic sounds in the film were the speaking and sounds of the surrounding area. Most of
the dialogue was between the three main soldiers: James, Sanborn and Eldridge. Other diegetic sounds would be the rocks and explosions whenever a
bomb went off, or gunshots. All of these diegetic sounds makes the film seem more natural and were necessary in order to capture the reality of

The Hurt Locker Analysis
I have recently watched The Hurt Locker with my class. I have never seen this movie before, but the movie was about a guy who was a bomb
detacher. I do not know the specific name for those people, but bomb detacher sounds right. He and his bomb squad went through a lot together
during the war. They faced the thought of dying every day. They found bombs all over the place that they were at. The director made the intensity of
the scenes with the bombs very realistic. The emotion of the characters while detaching the bombs were realistic and the reality of the emotion made
the viewers feel as if though they were at the site too. The movie's setting was during and in the war. The bomb guy was the main character of the
movie and he spent most of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
American Sniper is about a man in the Army, who was obviously a sniper. He was one of the best snipers that the Army had ever had. He had
saved millions of lives by being a sniper. He even moved up in the ranks of the military because he wanted to be more than someone who was just
the best sniper. He ended up being one of the most recognized men that has ever been in the Army. His funeral procession was the biggest one that
I have ever seen. It was amazing seeing all of those people lined up along the roads and on the bridges to see him off. The difference between the
two main characters of each movie is that one was a sniper, and one was part of a bomb squad. A bomb squad is people in the military who search
for bombs and detach the wires that set them off. They have to wear special suits and everything and risk killing themselves every day. They had
two totally different jobs, but both jobs were equally gut wrenching and terrifying. This movie mad tons of money when it first came out. This movie
deserved the money that it raised. When rating this film I would have to give it a four out of five stars because some of the scenes drag out, but this
movie is a well liked movie and deserves to

Hurt Locker Themes
The main themes of the movies are about the wars and situation in wars. The movies suggested about the actions of the person at war times. These
movies are different from the other war movies because these movies are not more related with the entertaining actions but it focuses more about the
survival in tough situation, the point of view of the person fighting in war situations, these factors are the major reasons of their fame.
The movie The Hurt Locker started with a statement that "War is a drug". Not all support this fact because most of the troops wanted to finish it as
soon as possible and went to their home. In contrast, the hero of the movie, Staff Sgt. William like the terrifying jobs and do that as a daily pleasure

Film Analysis Of The Hurt Locker
I chose The Hurt Locker mainly because it was the only film I recognized from the list of movies we could choose from. I also knew that it was
action packed and very entertaining to watch the characters. The opening scene is the sequence I went with because of the large amount going on
and it also sets the tone for the rest of the movie. The Hurt Locker takes place in Iraq a year after the war started. There are three main characters:
Staff Sergeant James, Sergeant Sanborn, and Specialist Eldridge. All three are on an elite Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal team working to
make the city a safer place by dismantling improvised explosive devices (IEDs). With less than a month left before their duty is up, surviving their
time in Iraq has become even more of a challenge with James as the new leader. The Hurt Locker dives right into the action with three characters
attempting to disassemble an IED. This beginning scene and the majority of the movie have a documentary effect. The hand in camera with all the
jerky movement going on gives the audience that feeling. It is a great way to present the film, as this gives the audience a sense of being there in Iraq.
The scene starts off with Sergeant Thompson walking toward the bomb on a hot day in a heavy suit. You can hear Thompson breathing hard with the
sun beating on him. With the light effects, you can see the heat in the air. All this in mind the viewer is able to feel sympathy for the character without
knowing much about him.

Critical Film Analysis: Saving Private Ryan vs. The Hurt Locker Whether it is a movie about World War II or the current Iraqi conflict, an audience
will be present to see what happens on the battlefields overseas. Audiences everywhere turn to war cinema to visualize a background story as well as
the grim reality of what is happening with their men and women away from home. They want to learn of the unseen truths that lie within the ranks of
the military's past and present. Two of what have been considered the greatest war movies to this day (according to reviews on Flickchart.com),Saving
Private Ryan and The Hurt Locker, take two different approaches to give that audience a first–person inside look at what happens daily for these
soldiers, both then and now. Although The Hurt Locker has been nominated for nearly ten Oscars, it takes what seems to be a not–so–truthful look at
what is happening overseas today due to the careless personality of Sergeant William James. Saving Private Ryan, however, takes a... Show more

Even though there may be some truths present in The Hurt Locker, they can be masked by this character and his actions alone. At the beginning of
the movie, the viewer is told the "war is a drug." This may be true for many soldiers, where one is exposed to it for so long that it is the only thing
that they know. However, if war is a drug for Sergeant James, it seems that he does not show it correctly. He may be addicted to the adrenaline rush
that his duty entails, but the director does not portray him as abiding by the rules and guidelines set forth by the United States military. Rather, he does
what he wants without respect of authority. It is more of a game to him, when the truth is that men of his position can be seen as some of the most

How Does Kathryn Bigelow Use Camera Angles In The Hurt Locker
The Hurt Locker, directed by Kathryn Bigelow, was shot in a boots on the ground reporter style manner that aids in creating a constant, restless
assumption of dread. Bigelow's use of camera angles, movement and slow motion of critical bomb explosions that accounts for every detail of what
happens that we would otherwise miss in real time, thus, drawing the viewer deeper in by heightening the raw comprehension of the moment. The
opening scene establishes a three man bomb defusing team confident in their skills baiting us to relax for the moment. However, through the multiple
different shots we witness things that begin to create some uneasiness, including shots from ground looking up at some Iraqi people looking through
windows, balconies and rooftops. The point of view camera angles causes us to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As the scene continues, the robot's trailer breaks a wheel and one the men, Thompson, must go out and so the robots work. While there is still
some comfort in his confidence level, the anxiety begins to build as he begins the long walk and the point of view becomes that of the Iraqi
civilians that are watching from the rooftop, or at least thats what we are led to believe. The shot then becomes POV from the gun scope where
we see a man casually watching from a balcony. These quick cut back and forth, jumpy shots are all over the place putting nerves on edge. We
begin to feel the stress as all camera angles are shown to us from everyones point of view in the scene, along with close ups to long shots. While
Thomson is walking towards the bomb, his breathing becomes louder and his walking is a little slower than expected for his confidence level. The
camera moves between close up and wide angle and it feels as though it is taking forever for him to get there. We are then close up watching Thomson
as if we are walking in front of him

Summary Of The Hurt Locker By Brian Turner
Opening the Hurt Locker In the poem "The Hurt Locker" the author Brian Turner, an Iraq war veteran, describes war how he views war after taking
an active role in it. Several members of our class suggest that the final message of the "Hurt Locker" is duty versus morality. I agree to a certain extent,
but I think there is a much bigger conflict with the author and the outside world. The author urges the reader to see war for what it really is. In his poem
Turner says, "Believe it when you see it" (2005). To me, this line is like an invitation to the readers to experience what war is like first–hand. He wants
people to see that there is much more to war than what people see on television or read in the paper. He also uses very descriptive language to
describe some of the events that happened during this particular war. One example is when Turner says, "Believe it when a twelve year old boy
rolls a grenade into a room" (2005). There is a certain shock value to this line that is meant to play on the reader's emotions. The author specifically
uses the word "rolls" in this line which is striking because that's a word that is usually associated with play, like when you say to a child, "Roll the ball
to me." Generally speaking, when thinking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is the line where I think the author's main message comes across the most clear. The author never tells us what the hurt locker is. The meaning of
the hurt locker can be interpreted many different ways, but I think the hurt locker is like another part of the war that the outside world does not see.
While watching the news or reading the newspaper, people do not learn about the things that Turner describes in his poem and I think that was the
author's motivation behind writing this poem. I think the author wants us to not only learn about what the war is really like, but to also ask our own

Chris Kyle And William James
Chris Kyle and William James are both dedicated warriors that had spent hundreds of hours training for a war in a foreign country overseas. Both
individuals enjoyed their work during training and craved to fight for their country, however they became addicted to the dangerous and exhilarating
thrills of battle. Kyle had written about his journey from high school to becoming a Navy Seal in American Sniper using oxymorons, symbolism and
emotional language from the perspective of himself, as well as his wife. Kathryn Bigelow presented the story of James' experience in Iraq by
implementing stylistic features such as music, cinematography and atmosphere. These texts revealed the life of the protagonist in their perspectives
showing their frequent close encounters with death, but continue to return on multiple deployments despite the fear, but for the ecstasy of combat.
Kyle and James do not care for politics; James represents the ordinary soldier on the ground conducting an extraordinary job whereas Kyle represents
the stereotypical hero conducting a secret job. But, both individuals suffer from the same dangerous addiction where they savour fighting in combat.
Chris Kyle dedicated his life to staying fit and continuing his military education so he could fight overseas. "I wanted to fight. I wanted to do what
I'd been trained for. American taxpayers had invested considerable dollars in my education as a SEAL. I wanted to defend my country, do my duty,
and do my job. I wanted more

Summary Of The Hurt Locker
The word hurt locker comes from military slang that means bad and painful place. Right away the title of this poem catches the reader's attention
because people who served in the military can relate to the message and imagery of the poem. This poem is describing the life of a combat deployed
soldier in Iraq or in war in general. It is trying to get the readers to believe and use their imagination when the poem states "Believe it when a
twelve–year–old rolls a grenade into the room" (Kennedy, 2012, p.532). The vast majority of people cannot imagine a twelve–year–old carrying a
grenade and using it to harm others. "The Hurt Locker" verse is not a rhyme poem. It is a poem that can make the readers understand the dangers
soldiers face in war. "The Hurt Locker" can be viewed different by every reader depending on experience. Veterans view of "The Hurt Locker" is an
imaginary locker where soldiers put their emotions the images that traumatized them things they do not want to deal with again. The locker is
where one must put their feelings and emotions aside and remember that those people are out to kill you. As a combat soldier, one must collect
souls and let God decide their faith. This poem has elements that the reader can imagine as they are reading the poem. The Hurt Locker poem stated
facts like "Or when a sniper punches a hole deep into someone's skull" (Kennedy, 2012, p.532). Soldiers know what a sniper rifle can do especially
when it is shot at one's head. Soldiers can

The main focus is on the United States military bomb disposal unit but something that stood out is the architectural aspect in the movie. There are
numerous components in the film that give an extremely valid feel of the setting. In the film, the structures all seem as though they are from the
Middle East, shrouded in dried mud, and is demonstrated within many scenes which gives the possibility of a nation that is living in neediness and
poverty. The traditional Baghdad house, commonly arranged on a swarmed confine street, has latticed windows and an open interior porch. The
environment is sweltering and dry in summer, cool and wet in winter. Spring and fall are brief however great. Among May and September the typical
step by step most outrageous temperature accomplishes the low 100s F (low 40s C), and the high may accomplish the low 120s F (high 40s C) at late
morning in July and August (Harr). Considering that the movie is taken in Baghdad the climate seems to be more warmer in the scenes of the movie
with the sun shining down during all scenes taken outside therefore for this reason I believe that this movie is correct with the historical significance

American Sniper And The Hurt Locker
American Sniper/The Hurt Locker
War movies have always been an American classic. With cinematography, actors, and exposure a film can either be a hit, or fall short. The film
American Sniper, is based off of the novel by the same name, reflecting the life of Navy Seal Chris Kyle. Following the release of the novel, Clint
Eastwood took the director's chair and adapted the novel, to the big screen. Although American Sniper became a worldwide hit, another movie,The Hurt
Locker, came years before it. Directed by award winning Kathryn Bigelow, The Hurt Locker is based on fictionalized characters reflecting the
experiences of an Explosive Ordinance Disposal team. While both films are remarkable in many ways, The Hurt Locker holds a better representation ...

The Hurt Locker, a movie which depicts the the War in Iraq, looks at the many different aspects of war. The soldiers in this movie have to endure
many severe conditions such as the possibility of dying on the spot because of an IED or trying to diffuse a bomb. Even though the mission is to win in a
war, these fighters are still human beings. The soldiers look out for their own comrades, but also want to protect the Iraqis they have befriended.
However, there were times when both the Iraqis and even some soldiers needed help, but got no aid. As a result, the remaining soldiers feel guilt, as if
they have let down people who count on them.

The Hurt Locker and PTSD
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is an anxiety disorder that runs through our military system and is often vastly overlooked. It is a little–known mental
health problem that is poorly understood. It can be traced back to the times of the Civil War and has been given names like shell–shocked syndrome,
PTSD, soldier's heart, and combat fatigue. A soldier who has experienced combat or military exposure of any level of severity can be susceptible to
this anxiety disorder and its symptoms. The Hollywood film The Hurt Locker, directed byKathryn Bigelow, depicts the American soldier's battles with
PTSD and shows how drastic its effects can be. There is a whole other world between life on the battlefield and life on the ... Show more content on

After viewing scenes involving Specialist Eldridge it is easy to sympathize with veterans diagnosed with PTSD. Not only experiencing but also
reliving these events takes such a toll on the human mind that everyday life becomes a living nightmare (ShelfLifeTV). If the face of Owen Eldridge
was on an accused suspect's file, it'd be difficult not to feel it wasn't his fault.
Another main character from The Hurt Locker who shows a connection with this political discourse is Sergeant William James. He is the main
focus of the movie and is hated but respected by almost everyone. He is the badass of the film who does everything his own way, without help
from anyone else, and gets the needed results. He is portrayed as the "perfect soldier" because he shows no weakness and puts his life on the line
even when he does not have to. There were only a few scenes in the film where he shows any sign of emotion, one of which was when he saw a
familiar boy lying dead on a table. The boy had a bomb wired through the internal organs of his body and James thought it was the boy he played
soccer with at base camp. James was hurt by this incident because he was so fond of the boy and saw that he was tortured and killed. Even though
nothing would come of it, James dismantled the bomb that was wired inside the

Movie Analysis : The Hurt Locker
War is a largely abstract concept to the average American. It is ubiquitous in news reports, political debates and our culture, but not tangibly
understandable. Aside from the small pockets of the population that have experienced warfare, the jarringly focused and rigid representation of EOD
team leader Sergeant First Class William James in Katherine Bigelow's film The Hurt Locker (2008) provides insight to a world that much of the
audience will never experience. Although The Hurt Locker would be regarded as a "realistic" film in form and content by modern standards, the
resulting product would not belong totally to "realist cinema" as defined by French theorist and film ciritic Andre Bazin. Bigelow's directive approach
to the film opposes the core of his writings with the use close ups, obtrusive editing, and framing focus the viewer to specific objects and themes. It is
through specific sequences of The Hurt Locker that the realist style emerges, creating a powerful, experiential moment for the audience to extract
meaning. Through the use of deep focus and wide shots with minimal editing, all prominent in Bazin's theories, specific scenes exemplify realist
cinema in this modern war–epic. The major film theorists of the early 20th Century primarily focused on demonstrating film, a widely popular and
novelty entertainment, as an art. These early theorists fell into two respective categories: the formative and the realists. The former focused on the
formic elements like

The Hurt Locker By Kathryn Bigelow
In classical Hollywood cinema, style, space, and time are unified and uninterrupted. These elements come together to match the viewer's sense of time
and space in reality. This is achieved through the use of many techniques such as the 180–degree rule, point–of–view shots, a lack of jump cuts, and
other unobtrusive filmmaking techniques. Using these techniques allow the audience to associate with the main characters in the film. For example,
the use of point–of–view shots allow the viewer to see the action from the characters' perspectives giving the audience a sense of connection with the
actors. Similarly, obeying the 180–degree rule allows films to have continuity in which there is no disruption in the viewers sense of location or... Show

The camera moves in a hand–held documentary style which allows the characters and the action to enter in and out of the frame. The editing also
achieves a fast–paced documentary style. For example, the opening sequence reflects this editing with lots of faced paced, sometimes random jump
cuts. The editing in this scene – as well as the rest of the movie – reflects much of the chaos that is occurring. However, in the opening sequence
Bigelow slows things down by using a camera that shoots at 58,000 frames per second. She uses this camera to capture the first bomb's blast radius
and deadly impact. Juxtaposing this extreme slow–mo sequence with the fast–paced cuts that happened just before causes a distortion of time for the
viewer. After seeing such rapid editing, the audience is momentarily forced to really absorb the force of the explosion. The detailed shots of rocks
lifting from the ground and rust separating from a car's frame provide a contrast with the rest of the film. The rest of the film maintains a documentary
style, meanwhile utilizing the geography of the setting to convey a sense of uncertainty in the audience. The surroundings are conveyed not only
through very tight shots, but also through very wide ones. In a discussion with David Pendleton, Bigelow said of the film, "...it's a geographic–centric
piece because the audience as well as the bomb tech needs to know where you are in relation to the IED at all times, and that's what kind of

How can it be considered an anti–war film if none of the characters question the reason for war, or any politicians for that matter? The film does not
focus on the purpose of the war but more so on how the war is conducted. One of the more interesting parts of the movie is James's reaction to the
real word. It shows that James cannot cope in a civilian lifestyle. This is very evident when he goes back home to the States. In the supermarket he
seems lost, a feeling he never really seemed to have in Iraq. He hesitates when he picks out a cereal; James never hesitated back in Iraq. His inability to
cope with civilian society is also very evident when he is in his house. He tries to tell his ex–wife all about the stories he has from Iraq but she does not
listen. It appears that being in a bomb squad is the only thing that he talks and cares about. The defining moment that explains James's inability to
be a civilian is when he talks his son. He says that there is only one thing in the world he loves. The next scene shows him going back to Iraq and
putting the bomb suit back on. This scene in particular highlights his addiction to war. He was unable to have a happy life at home so he needed to
go to the one place that made him happy. It can be compared to a drug addict going back into a relapse after a break. Although one can argue that
James's addiction to war is an effect of the war which would make the movie anti–war, the last

Analysis Of The Hurt Locker And Skyfall
The scenes I have chosen for the final project come from the films The Hurt Locker (Kathryn Bigelow, 2008) and Skyfall (Sam Mendes, 2012). The
reason I chose these scenes is because they both symbolize the effects of alcohol. The scene from The Hurt Locker involves the consumption of
alcohol by the soldiers, which changes their behaviors and actions. They transform from tough, serious characters, to compassionate, childish
characters under the influence of alcohol. In this context, alcohol holds the power over the characters in this scene. Alcohol also plays a role of
power in the clip I chose from Skyfall; it is the glass of alcohol in this scene which influences Bond's decision. Alcohol, as well as other elements of
cinematography blend together to produce scenes where power is the main theme. The scene that I selected from The Hurt Locker is titled "Stuff That
Almost Killed Me." Here, we see three soldiers, who go by the names of Will, J.T., and Owen, bonding after a long day at work. It is evident that
they have all consumed a good amount of alcohol; the bottle on the table they sit around gives us this clue, in addition to the way the characters are
speaking. Next, we see J.T. going through a box of items that belong to Will. As he picks each item up from the box, J.T. asks why Will kept these
war items under his bed. Will describes the significance of each one, followed by saying that these are all things that almost killed him. After they
disagree about the significance of the items Will kept, J.T. and Will get up and throw punches at each other, but just joking around. The scene ends
with J.T. laying on the floor in pain after being hit by Will. In Skyfall, Bond is presented the challenge of shooting ashot glass off of a woman's head. In
the glass, of course, is alcohol, the element of power. Raoul (the bad guy) leads Bond to the back of an abandoned building where a woman named
Severine is tied up. Bond is offered a shot of alcohol, followed by the rules of a little game presented by Raoul. He tells Bond that the two of them
are going to see who can shoot a glass off of Severine's head first. As Bond is handed a gun, the man behind him puts a gun to Bond's head, and the

this movie is about as far from realism that a movie can be (this claim includes all movies about time travel, and vampires, but excludes any movies

quote was written by former New York Times war correspondent, Chris Hedges and it perfectly sets the stage for a story that depicts just how potent
and addicting war can be (Corliss). The 2008 movie won six Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, and
Best Actor in a Leading Role ("Nominees & Winners"). The Hurt Locker is an exceptional movie that contains everything one would expect from an

His reckless behavior causes no shortage of frustration to Sergeant J.T. Sanborn and Specialist Owen Eldridge, his fellow E.O.D. members. Sanborn
and Eldridge are responsible for securing the area and keeping James safe while he does what he does what he does best, disarming bombs that could
kill him in an instant.
During one E.O.D. mission, James decides to search for the insurgents responsible for detonating a petrol tanker. Sanborn and Eldridge reluctantly
follow and when the three split up to cover more ground, Eldridge is captured by insurgents. The rescue attempt is successful, although Eldridge is
accidentally shot in the leg and later discharged from the Army as a result. Sanborn and James are called to another mission where James is unable to
cut the bolts securing a bomb vest to the chest of an innocent Iraqi civilian. The bomb detonates, killing the civilian and the stress of this mission
causes Sanborn to break down and confess to James that he wants to go home and start a family. He can no longer cope with the pressures of war. Just
days later, after completing their rotation, both men return home but James has a hard time dealing with his boring and routine civilian life (Hurt).
Each mission that the E.O.D. team takes part in flows smoothly into the next. The missions are sensible, and they are presented in a somewhat simple
manner without an excess of

Movie Analysis : ' Hurt Locker '
The "Hurt Locker" by the filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow conveys several messages but I believe that the main message to the theme of the movie is
presented at the very beginning of the film in the form of a quote. The quote that appears in the film states, "The rush of battle is often a potent and
lethal addiction, for war is a drug." This quote comes from the book 'War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning,' by Chris Hedges, a reporter for The New
York Times. I believe this message is the main theme of this movie as depict through the character Sergeant First Class William James played by
Jeremy Renner. The focus of this film established its ability to emulate the truth about the chaos and catastrophic events of not only war but also the
addition to war. The dirty truth of this statement echoes throughout the movie. Most every scene communicated this one central message.
Addiction is not limited to drugs, alcohol, gambling, pornography, or sex but wars as well. Regardless of the drug of choice each share a similar fate.
The destruction of what we love, people, children, sons and daughters, things/possessions, our principles, values and morals but most of all our sense
self–worth and purpose in life. As with any addiction our thoughts become mental distortions of the experience suffered. An experience which only
leads to behaviors/behavioral responses based our own personal experience to the devastating exposure to the drug. This movie is a journey through the
losses suffered from

Realism In The Lumiere Brothers
Realism is the artistic attempt to recreate life as it is in the context of an artistic medium. It began as a revolt against the conventions of the classic
view of art in the late 1800s in America and Europe in the form of an artistic movement (McConnel, R. 1997). There are many themes involved with
realism that shall be discussed. These include accuracy and independence.
Realists attempt to portray the illusion that their film world has not been manipulated and is almost like a mirror to the real world. Their techniques
are different to those of any other film. They try to make the film seem as real and as close to normal life as possible by using natural lighting instead
of special lighting equipment, they also mostly use hand held cameras and employ non– professional actors to really uphold this realistic image.
The Lumiere Brothers were the pioneers of 'realism through films' as they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The depiction of subjects is always absolutely accurate to reinforce the portrayal of real life and is void of any unnecessary artistic embellishment (Vaux,
R. 2014). A technique that is used is filming done on locations rather than sets to properly portray the feel of real–life. Events are not euphemized or
hyperbolized to become a distortion or opinion of the truth. Unpleasant images, words and events are portrayed in full with no hidden facts, as well as
plain images, words or events.
A realist film that shows great accuracy is the war film All Quiet on the Western Front. The storyline incorporates just enough action to inform
viewers that it is a war movie and at the same time it also embodies many other aspects such as the politics, emotions and hype involved with the war
(Ronald, R. 2013). This gives the viewer a more accurate view as all aspects of the war are covered. Throughout the film we see that real locations
have been chosen to enhance the realistic vision and accuracy of the film.

Movie Analysis : ' The Hurt Locker '
"The Hurt Locker" by film maker Kathryn Bigelow conveys the theme of the movie at the very beginning. The theme is a simple quote by Chris
Hedges which states, "The rush of battle is often a potent and lethal addiction, for war is a drug." (Hedges)The film 's greatest achievement is its ability
to communicate the underlying truth of this quote consistently throughout the movie. Sergeant First Class William James, played by James Renner,
captures this message through his job description, dialogue, and demeanor, as well as his obstinate/erratic behaviors. The creative selective style of
slow motion effects, instability of camera movement, and the intense sound/visual effects clearly evokes the chaos and confusion that is associated
with any drug/addiction. The location, scenery and lighting contribute to the feel of realism.
To truly grasp the meaning of this quote by Chris Hedges it is imperative to have some knowledge /understanding of the mental struggle associated with
war as well as the consequences suffered from this drug/addiction. Furthermore, Kathryn Bigelow distinct ability to introduce the audience two types of
terrorists is remarkable. A terrorist which is easily recognizable and another terrorists, that is hidden deep within the mind of any soldier who has
experienced this lethal drug/potent addiction called war. Consequently, the connection between these two forms of terrorist are represented in the form
of a bomb. Unfortunately, these bombs share the same fate,

Analysis Of The Book ' The Forever War '
The Unending Revenge Published in 2008, The Forever War by Dexter Filkins compiles a series of vignettes that detail his encounters as a reporter
in Iraq and in Afghanistan. Released a year after, director Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker also examines a harrowing account of the conflicts in
Iraq. Both works poignantly present the unbridled violence that plague the region, and the futility of a war embedded within a vicious cycle of
retaliation. Nevertheless, the portrayal of vengeance as a major motivating force of the war, as well as the war's isolating and demoralizing effect on
its witnesses, are better achieved in The Forever War. Contrary to the sole perspective of an American Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) team in
The Hurt Locker, Filkins includes multiple angles to explore each of the elements portrayed, and ultimately offers a more profound, subtle, and
enduring explication than the film. Both The Hurt Locker and The Forever War discuss revenge as an integral part of the violent experience of the
war. Bigelow begins this discussion by examining revenge as the rationale behind Sergeant James' erratic and violent tendencies, and Filkins
completes this discussion by thoroughly studying the prevalence of revenge as the propelling factor of violence. In The Hurt Locker, the largely
unpredictable character of Sergeant William James becomes primarily understood by his desire to avenge the supposed death of Beckham, a young

The Hurt Locker Essay
In "The Hurt Locker" directed by Kathryn Bigelow, the filmmakers accentuate the fact that war and chaos are dangerous and never ending, and yet are
addictive in a way that forms the soldiers' passions and ways of life. The filmmakers do this by using unique camera shots and techniques to capture the
real–life tension experienced by soldiers, as well as explore different points of views during a situation and by arranging the movie in a documentary
style that makes a fictional movie and story seem like real shots of soldiers in the field. They do this in order emphasize the uncertainty and danger
soldiers face in war and the ways that this chaos affects the soldiers' decisions and actions towards different situations, in a way that warns people of

The filmmakers use a variety of different camera shots and techniques in order to reflect the atmosphere in the stressful situations faced by the
soldiers. One major technique used is that they filmed with hand held cameras instead of stationary ones. This created more active and dynamic
scenes, especially those with the bombs. Some shots were made to be especially shaky so that it added to the unease of the scene as well as made
it seem as if the footage came from an actual person filming the scene in real life. The shaky video made it seem as if the person was running and
created a sense of anxiety that reflected the feeling the soldiers were having during that time. Another technique used was the variety of camera
angles and points of views that were shown. In the first bomb scene, the camera kept flashing from one view to another, whether from a window of
an observer looking down at the scene below, or from the window of a gun, reflecting the image a soldier would see through the weapon. These
changes in points of view not only gave the audience an idea of how the

Technically, the opening scene of Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker is unnecessary. The story doesn't really start until Jeremy Renner's Sgt. James
first arrives ten minutes later. At that point, his adrenaline–based nature and his relationship with the men in his unit become the paramount focus of
the film. However, for what Bigelow is doing, that opening scene is absolutely essential. For the viewer, this essentially extended TV teaser slams you
into the action. Suddenly, you're on the battlefield, with the men as they perform their highly dangerous job. It's shot in a handheld style, making it feel
as though you're really there, participating and watching. This allows Bigelow to quickly establish the rapport these men have, and the... Show more

The result is that Hawks teaches the audience to observe the men at work; his characters do not wear their emotions on their sleeves. The audience is
forced to watch and understand how a character is feeling (the small worlds Hawks tended to build helped enormously with this as well). He
structured his films around action sequences, using them to bind characters together and to push characters to their breaking points. In Rio Bravo, the
height of Dean Martin's alcoholism is when he fails to properly perform his job. But he is able to redeem himself in the next action sequence and
prove that he is still of value, to himself and the audience. Hawks' cinematic world is subtler than most, but ultimately powerful.
While it would be perhaps unwise to argue that Kathryn Bigelow is literally Howard Hawks, reincarnated and regenerated, the resemblances between his
techniques and those used in The Hurt Locker are striking. Bigelow starts off with the same challenge as any filmmaker – get the audience onboard.
The opening scene achieves that by throwing the audience straight in. There's no escape; the viewer becomes part of the small world of the explosive
disposal team. After that, Bigelow (and Mark Boal) waste no time introducing Jeremy Renner's Sgt. James. The reason for this is clear: at its heart, this
is a film about one man's

Film Analysis: Hurt Locker
Hurt Locker is about a bomb disposal group, Bravo Company, in Baghdad. The movie follows dangerous missions that the group have to go
through facing their last few days in Baghdad. In the beginning the specialist dies after a road IED explodes when he is too close to it. That is
where the movie really takes off, as specialist Owen Eldridge is brought in. He takes chances, and is reckless, which Sargent Sanborn and Staff
Sargent James, are weary about. The majority of the movie takes place in the last week or two of the groups time left in Baghdad, which is a time
where they seem to have some of the most dangerous and technical jobs they have. The three men have to face their own internal issues, while being
aware that in an instance, with a wrongly cut wire or a suicide bomber, the team could be killed. The movie is suspenseful and keeps the viewers on

In one scene of the movie the team, kicks in doors, and executes snipper missions. However, in real life, the Explosive Ordinance Disposal units, just
like Bravo Company, do one thing well, dispose of bombs. The movie made the Bravo unit, seem like did it all, and made the ground teams like the
infantry or the military–police, look useless. This movie was mainly used to win awards, and the director did not do his research to make an accurate
portrayal of what really went down in Baghdad. Also the movie had soldiers in the wrong uniforms, poor tactics, and the ranks that the soldiers had
verses their leadership roles that were shown. The movie also makes the EOD team seem like their heroes and they travel around by themselves,
without being able to contact anyone from the base, when in fact, the team would have access to back up and very rarely went on missions just the
three of them. This movie overall seemed to be award seeking instead of getting the raw content of what really happened in

Analysis Of Paul Bigelow's 'The Algiers Motel Incident'
If you have a good–sized used bookstore in your town, you might find a paperback copy of John Hersey's 1968 best–seller The Algiers Motel Incident,
a report on the events at the center of Kathryn Bigelow's new film. So when the ads claim that Detroit is telling an untold story, what they really mean
is "Tis new to thee." And yet I suspect that it will not seem new, nor old, to most audiences–– only all too familiar. Bigelow's film is the nearest thing I
can think of to an American counterpart of Paul Greengrass's docudrama Bloody Sunday. In its first act (of three), Bigelow approximates Greengrass's
pseudo–verite style, immersing us in the buildup to the 1967 Detroit riots with jumpy immediacy, with great help from her Zero Dark Thirty editor,
William Goldenberg. Over time, we are introduced to the characters who will converge on the Algiers Motel, including the members of the Dramatics,
an aspiring soul act whose gig at the Fox Theater is abruptly cancelled by the riots; a reckless cop (Will Poulter) who's allowed back on the streets after
shooting a looter in the back despite orders not to fire at looters; and a security guard (John Boyega) whose uniform gives him some immunity from
suspicion on the part of white police and National Guard troops.
At the Algiers, where the Dramatics crash after their disappointment, we meet a pair of white girls (Kaitlyn Dever and Hannah Murray) and Carl
Cooper (Jason Mitchell), tenant who puts a scare into the other guests by staging a

What makes an excellent film?
It took me a little while to come up with an answer to, "What makes an excellent film?" There really is no answer, actually. I believe that an excellent
film is within the eyes and emotions of the audience. After researching and discovering what actually won Oscars and Golden Globe awards, it came
down to what the people thought, and the popularity of a film. It is extremely hard to predict what will win these awards before the movie is even
released to the public.
Before really thinking about the subject, some obvious traits of what I would consider "an excellent film" would be superior acting, beautiful scenery,

The only other time that this had happened was in the 1950's, for Ben Hur. These definitely have something to do with what makes an excellent film,
but I also believe that the personal connection and emotions that someone has with a film is just as important.
I feel that the emotional connection that people make with a film is, in most cases, an extremely important quality that directors can emphasize on
in /their work. Whether it is a realistic movie that is based off of a true story, or a children's Disney movie, anyone can experience a sense of a
character's point of view. Depending on the type of film (horror, suspense, comedy, drama, etc.), this emotional connection can vary among different
people. In a classic Disney film such as Bambi, children can relate to Bambi. They can easily understand the type of experiences that he goes through
such as having friends (Thumper, a joyous rabbit, and Flower, a loving skunk), playing on an icy pond, and even going through an emotional event of
losing a loved one (the death of Bambi's mother).
In general, people rarely want to watch films that they know they won't enjoy. This is why there are so many types of films, and different people have
different views on what makes an "excellent film". The media can have an

Hurt Locker Stereotypes
Although The Hurt Locker details the emotional impacts of war on soldiers and occasionally breaks some male–role stereotypes, this does not
necessarily make the film or the presentation of the characters feminist. The depiction of the soldiers generally holds true to standard male gender
norms, even though the three main characters occasionally show emotion and weakness. For example, James' friendship with Beckham, a boy who
lingers around the base selling DVDs, is that of a father or older brother; James is upset when he believes that Beckham had been killed for use as a
body bomb, and sneaks off base and into town to learn Beckham's whereabouts. However, while showing that James is able to care for others, this role
is still that of a protector. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Eldridge's guilt and grief over his previous squad mate's death affects him when he is out of the field, and although he is a capable soldier, he remains
unsure while in combat, unlike his two counterparts, who are also in higher leadership positions. He is neither assertive nor decisive, and lacking these
traits is often associated with being "feminine" (Hyde & Else–Quest, 2013, 62); additionally, men in lower positions of power and who are not
self–reliant are viewed as less masculine because they do not uphold traditional male stereotypes. Because of his insecurity and subordinate positon,
Eldridge is characterized as less masculine than either James or Sanborn by the viewer of the film. Contrastingly, Sanborn is not afforded much
emotion until the end of the film, during his breakdown in the Humvee, where he weeps, admitting his fears of dying in Iraq before he can go home
and start a family. This scene is especially important for Sanborn's character, since he is characterized as a no–nonsense leader for the majority of the
film and rarely shows weakness. However, it is also important to note that black men are not characterized the same as white men, and are often
hyper–masculinized by white dominated media (Wong et. al, 2013); Sanborn's display of emotion helps to contrast popular media's stereotypes of both
masculinity and of black

Analysis Of The Hurt Locker
The statement, "The Hurt Locker is one of the greatest war films ever made" is a loaded comment that forces the viewer to consider several things.
First, it requires the viewer to identify what makes a good war film: is it the action, the heroism, the filming technique, sound effect etc.? All these
things are important to consider when determining the quality of a war movie. I argue that The Hurt Locker is one of the greatest war films ever made
because the film reveals war's brutal side, how it removes the mundane, and its destruction of innocence, while also portraying a realistic hero that one
could hope to emulate. The first reason The Hurt Locker should be considered great is because of its accurate portrayal about the horrors of war.
Chris Hedges repeatedly states, "[War] is peddled by mythmakers – historians, war correspondents, filmmakers, novelists, and the state... that war as
displayed by the entertainment industry might, in most cases, as well be ballet" and it is because of this that the masses get a false sense of what war
entails (Hedges 2002, pg.3, 84). The Hurt Locker does the opposite of that, director Kathryn Bigelow decides not to follow the typical structure of a
war movie and elects to include the graphic images and sounds that remove the cover from this dream and reveal a nightmare. Specifically, the scene
that stands out is when Staff Sargent William James finds the body of a boy who strongly resembles a friend named Beckham, which has been turned
into a body bomb.
Here the viewer is forced to look at the body, which is bloated due to it being stuffed with explosives, and the crude stitching used to close it. Bigelow
elects to use a variety of close–up and medium shots to include the reaction that Will and his squad have while staring at the body (Corrigan 2015).
This alone is enough to make the viewer uncomfortable, but where she truly excels is during Will's removal of the bomb. Hedges states that one of
the requirement to "wake us up" from the typical film is "the deafening and disturbing noise" (Hedges 2002, pg.84). Bigelow accomplishes this
during the bomb removal by adding a loud snap every time Will cuts a suture (Bigelow 2009). Now, even if a person attempts to look away, this

How do Kathryn Bigelow's films The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty use language to portray the life of combatants in a battle?
Introduction
Kathryn Bigelow is one of the most iconic directors of the modern era. Her sense of depicting language remains unopposed. She is known for her
specialty films of the war genre. Several of her works have been greatly appreciated, such as The Weight of Water,The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty,
etc. These have won her several awards and secured her place as one of the most influential directors of all time.
Essay
The Hurt Locker is a slow paced film. Most of the scenes have been deeply elaborated with excessive portrayal on the character's expression. Set
during Iraq War, it illustrates the lives of three soldiers who have the most terrifyingly dangerous jobs in the world– working in a bomb disposal squad.
They risk their lives every day to provide safety to the society they are aiding. It is an extremely harsh and touching film, which depicts the message
that when you love something and keeping repeating it, it becomes an obsession and you cannot live without it. Most of the characters in the film can
be interconnected to the actors where he/she have an unsafe passion. There are several metaphors buried in each scene which, when examined
carefully, reveal the political meaning.
The lead character of The Hurt Locker, Sergeant First Class William James, is, metaphorically, a character representation of America, often putting him

For the most part all people carry a baggage weather it be stress, regret or an addiction etc. In addition certain weights are harder to put down.
Singularly any dependency can lead to an abyss where one is just a by stander , with no control. Consequently addiction Is the gateway to that
feeling of having no control. Brian Turner in "The Hurt Locker" illustrates the addiction that coincides with war through his use of metaphor's.
Accordingly, war has always deplored a person in to the events that took place while in battle. Consequently Turner's poem touched the hearts of war
veterans since they too felt this at some point if they do not still. Soldiers were merely slaves to the war in Iraq. Wherefore as the labors in the past

Summary Of The Hurt Locker By Brian Turner
Even with today's technological advancements, it was still difficult to understand exactly what the U.S. soldiers were going through during the Iraq
war. However, Brian Turner's poem, "The Hurt Locker," acts as a first–hand account of the true horrors and pains experienced by the American
soldiers. Through Turner's use of poetic form and structure, diction, and figurative language he enables the reader to understand the trauma and
suffering these soldiers were forced to endure throughout the war. The poetic form and structure of Turner's poem reinforce the concept of the horrific
trauma these soldiers were experiencing. For example, Turner use of anaphora emphasize this message at the beginning of the poem, "Nothing but hurt
left here. / Nothing But bullets and pain" and also at the beginning of the second stanza, "Believe it when you see it. / Believe it when a
twelve–year–old / rolls a grenade into the room" (1–2: 7–9). These lines show the reader that all the soldiers have are themselves and what Turner is
saying is the truth. In addition, Turner's use of lineation further drives this message by ending several lines with words commonly used to describe an
injured soldier such as, pain, slumping, wounded, and hurt (2,3,5,6). Together, the negative connotation of these words increases the reader's
understanding of the trauma... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

fails to mention whether these men are being treated or if they will survive. Even though the reader feels like they are at the battlefield, Turner conveys
a sense of hopelessness to remind the reader that they can do nothing to help the wounded

The Hurt Locker War Is A Drug Quotes

  • 1. The Hurt Locker War Is A Drug Quotes In the film "The Hurt Locker" directed by Kathryn Bigelow, the theme of "war is a drug" is shown throughout the film. The film is about a bomb squad tasked with disarming bombs planted roadside, in bundles and other more disturbing places in Iraq. However the film is really more focused on what happens in the minds of soldiers under the constant adrenaline rush of war. As I watched the movie I began to gain an understanding of the quote "The rush of battle is often a potent and lethal addiction, for war is a drug". This quote was said by Chris Hedges an American journalist, activist and author. The quote plays a key part throughout thefilm and this is why it used as the opening scene of film. During the film Sergeant First Class William ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sanborn says " I'm not ready to die, James. (James) Well, you're not going to die out here, bro. (Sanborn) Another two inches? Shrapnel zings by; slices my throat. I'll bleed out like a pig in the sand; nobody'll give a shit. I mean my parents? They'll care, but they don't count, man. Who else? I don't even have a son." This shows that Sanborn is scared of what will happen next. He fears war and is afraid of the consequences of it. For Sanborn war doesn't give him the same thrill as it does for James. In fact it gives him the opposite effect. James and Sanborn show two very different sides of war. An example of this is when Sergeant J.T Sanborn and James are talking in the Humvee after the final bomb scene. Sanborn says to James "But you realize every time you suit up, every time we go out, its life or death. You roll the dice, and you deal with it. You recognize that don't you? (James) Yeah... Yeah, I do. But I don't know why.] I don't know, J.T. You know why I'm that way? (Sanborn) No, I don't." This part of the movie reinforces the fact that James is addicted to war and the adrenaline of it. It also proves that Sanborn is perplexed as to how James can find war so enjoyable, henceforth him not finding war addictive like James ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Hurt Locker Analyse The Hurt Locker is a film written by Mark Boal and directed by Kathryn Bigelow. It depicts several solders journeys while they are station at Camp Victory in Iraq. TH title is GI slang for a severe injury, however it's commonly used in American sports like hockey. TO many this may have seemed like another war movie but the use of sound and camera movement is what makes this movie so engaging. The writer depicts the theme of how war can be an addiction, and how the soldiers must use the drug in order to survive war. This is emphasized through the main character; not only through his actions but also symbolically through the cigarettes he smokes. This concept is more clearly shown at the end of the film when James goes home and he cant stop thinking about the war. He ends up returning to battle, despite having to leave his son and wife again. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The non–diegetic sounds would the music that plays. It's instrumental and uses long, low and eerie sounds to intensify scenarios. The music also foreshadows what is going to happen, when the tempo of the music changes the viewer knows that something is going to happen. Depending on the change to the music will allow the viewer to know if something good or something bad is going to happen. For example when the music starts to get deeper and slower usually all the commotion slows down and the camera is only focused one solider. On the other hand when the music is fast the scenes are usually full of movement and chaotic. The diegetic sounds in the film were the speaking and sounds of the surrounding area. Most of the dialogue was between the three main soldiers: James, Sanborn and Eldridge. Other diegetic sounds would be the rocks and explosions whenever a bomb went off, or gunshots. All of these diegetic sounds makes the film seem more natural and were necessary in order to capture the reality of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Hurt Locker Analysis I have recently watched The Hurt Locker with my class. I have never seen this movie before, but the movie was about a guy who was a bomb detacher. I do not know the specific name for those people, but bomb detacher sounds right. He and his bomb squad went through a lot together during the war. They faced the thought of dying every day. They found bombs all over the place that they were at. The director made the intensity of the scenes with the bombs very realistic. The emotion of the characters while detaching the bombs were realistic and the reality of the emotion made the viewers feel as if though they were at the site too. The movie's setting was during and in the war. The bomb guy was the main character of the movie and he spent most of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... American Sniper is about a man in the Army, who was obviously a sniper. He was one of the best snipers that the Army had ever had. He had saved millions of lives by being a sniper. He even moved up in the ranks of the military because he wanted to be more than someone who was just the best sniper. He ended up being one of the most recognized men that has ever been in the Army. His funeral procession was the biggest one that I have ever seen. It was amazing seeing all of those people lined up along the roads and on the bridges to see him off. The difference between the two main characters of each movie is that one was a sniper, and one was part of a bomb squad. A bomb squad is people in the military who search for bombs and detach the wires that set them off. They have to wear special suits and everything and risk killing themselves every day. They had two totally different jobs, but both jobs were equally gut wrenching and terrifying. This movie mad tons of money when it first came out. This movie deserved the money that it raised. When rating this film I would have to give it a four out of five stars because some of the scenes drag out, but this movie is a well liked movie and deserves to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Hurt Locker Themes The main themes of the movies are about the wars and situation in wars. The movies suggested about the actions of the person at war times. These movies are different from the other war movies because these movies are not more related with the entertaining actions but it focuses more about the survival in tough situation, the point of view of the person fighting in war situations, these factors are the major reasons of their fame. The movie The Hurt Locker started with a statement that "War is a drug". Not all support this fact because most of the troops wanted to finish it as soon as possible and went to their home. In contrast, the hero of the movie, Staff Sgt. William like the terrifying jobs and do that as a daily pleasure (Hurt Locker ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Film Analysis Of The Hurt Locker I chose The Hurt Locker mainly because it was the only film I recognized from the list of movies we could choose from. I also knew that it was action packed and very entertaining to watch the characters. The opening scene is the sequence I went with because of the large amount going on and it also sets the tone for the rest of the movie. The Hurt Locker takes place in Iraq a year after the war started. There are three main characters: Staff Sergeant James, Sergeant Sanborn, and Specialist Eldridge. All three are on an elite Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal team working to make the city a safer place by dismantling improvised explosive devices (IEDs). With less than a month left before their duty is up, surviving their time in Iraq has become even more of a challenge with James as the new leader. The Hurt Locker dives right into the action with three characters attempting to disassemble an IED. This beginning scene and the majority of the movie have a documentary effect. The hand in camera with all the jerky movement going on gives the audience that feeling. It is a great way to present the film, as this gives the audience a sense of being there in Iraq. The scene starts off with Sergeant Thompson walking toward the bomb on a hot day in a heavy suit. You can hear Thompson breathing hard with the sun beating on him. With the light effects, you can see the heat in the air. All this in mind the viewer is able to feel sympathy for the character without knowing much about him. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Hurt Locker Essay Critical Film Analysis: Saving Private Ryan vs. The Hurt Locker Whether it is a movie about World War II or the current Iraqi conflict, an audience will be present to see what happens on the battlefields overseas. Audiences everywhere turn to war cinema to visualize a background story as well as the grim reality of what is happening with their men and women away from home. They want to learn of the unseen truths that lie within the ranks of the military's past and present. Two of what have been considered the greatest war movies to this day (according to reviews on Flickchart.com),Saving Private Ryan and The Hurt Locker, take two different approaches to give that audience a first–person inside look at what happens daily for these soldiers, both then and now. Although The Hurt Locker has been nominated for nearly ten Oscars, it takes what seems to be a not–so–truthful look at what is happening overseas today due to the careless personality of Sergeant William James. Saving Private Ryan, however, takes a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even though there may be some truths present in The Hurt Locker, they can be masked by this character and his actions alone. At the beginning of the movie, the viewer is told the "war is a drug." This may be true for many soldiers, where one is exposed to it for so long that it is the only thing that they know. However, if war is a drug for Sergeant James, it seems that he does not show it correctly. He may be addicted to the adrenaline rush that his duty entails, but the director does not portray him as abiding by the rules and guidelines set forth by the United States military. Rather, he does what he wants without respect of authority. It is more of a game to him, when the truth is that men of his position can be seen as some of the most careful and respectable men in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. How Does Kathryn Bigelow Use Camera Angles In The Hurt Locker The Hurt Locker, directed by Kathryn Bigelow, was shot in a boots on the ground reporter style manner that aids in creating a constant, restless assumption of dread. Bigelow's use of camera angles, movement and slow motion of critical bomb explosions that accounts for every detail of what happens that we would otherwise miss in real time, thus, drawing the viewer deeper in by heightening the raw comprehension of the moment. The opening scene establishes a three man bomb defusing team confident in their skills baiting us to relax for the moment. However, through the multiple different shots we witness things that begin to create some uneasiness, including shots from ground looking up at some Iraqi people looking through windows, balconies and rooftops. The point of view camera angles causes us to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As the scene continues, the robot's trailer breaks a wheel and one the men, Thompson, must go out and so the robots work. While there is still some comfort in his confidence level, the anxiety begins to build as he begins the long walk and the point of view becomes that of the Iraqi civilians that are watching from the rooftop, or at least thats what we are led to believe. The shot then becomes POV from the gun scope where we see a man casually watching from a balcony. These quick cut back and forth, jumpy shots are all over the place putting nerves on edge. We begin to feel the stress as all camera angles are shown to us from everyones point of view in the scene, along with close ups to long shots. While Thomson is walking towards the bomb, his breathing becomes louder and his walking is a little slower than expected for his confidence level. The camera moves between close up and wide angle and it feels as though it is taking forever for him to get there. We are then close up watching Thomson as if we are walking in front of him ... • 8. Summary Of The Hurt Locker By Brian Turner Opening the Hurt Locker In the poem "The Hurt Locker" the author Brian Turner, an Iraq war veteran, describes war how he views war after taking an active role in it. Several members of our class suggest that the final message of the "Hurt Locker" is duty versus morality. I agree to a certain extent, but I think there is a much bigger conflict with the author and the outside world. The author urges the reader to see war for what it really is. In his poem Turner says, "Believe it when you see it" (2005). To me, this line is like an invitation to the readers to experience what war is like first–hand. He wants people to see that there is much more to war than what people see on television or read in the paper. He also uses very descriptive language to describe some of the events that happened during this particular war. One example is when Turner says, "Believe it when a twelve year old boy rolls a grenade into a room" (2005). There is a certain shock value to this line that is meant to play on the reader's emotions. The author specifically uses the word "rolls" in this line which is striking because that's a word that is usually associated with play, like when you say to a child, "Roll the ball to me." Generally speaking, when thinking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is the line where I think the author's main message comes across the most clear. The author never tells us what the hurt locker is. The meaning of the hurt locker can be interpreted many different ways, but I think the hurt locker is like another part of the war that the outside world does not see. While watching the news or reading the newspaper, people do not learn about the things that Turner describes in his poem and I think that was the author's motivation behind writing this poem. I think the author wants us to not only learn about what the war is really like, but to also ask our own ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Chris Kyle And William James Chris Kyle and William James are both dedicated warriors that had spent hundreds of hours training for a war in a foreign country overseas. Both individuals enjoyed their work during training and craved to fight for their country, however they became addicted to the dangerous and exhilarating thrills of battle. Kyle had written about his journey from high school to becoming a Navy Seal in American Sniper using oxymorons, symbolism and emotional language from the perspective of himself, as well as his wife. Kathryn Bigelow presented the story of James' experience in Iraq by implementing stylistic features such as music, cinematography and atmosphere. These texts revealed the life of the protagonist in their perspectives showing their frequent close encounters with death, but continue to return on multiple deployments despite the fear, but for the ecstasy of combat. Kyle and James do not care for politics; James represents the ordinary soldier on the ground conducting an extraordinary job whereas Kyle represents the stereotypical hero conducting a secret job. • 10. Summary Of The Hurt Locker The word hurt locker comes from military slang that means bad and painful place. Right away the title of this poem catches the reader's attention because people who served in the military can relate to the message and imagery of the poem. This poem is describing the life of a combat deployed soldier in Iraq or in war in general. It is trying to get the readers to believe and use their imagination when the poem states "Believe it when a twelve–year–old rolls a grenade into the room" (Kennedy, 2012, p.532). The vast majority of people cannot imagine a twelve–year–old carrying a grenade and using it to harm others. "The Hurt Locker" verse is not a rhyme poem. It is a poem that can make the readers understand the dangers soldiers face in war. "The Hurt Locker" can be viewed different by every reader depending on experience. Veterans view of "The Hurt Locker" is an imaginary locker where soldiers put their emotions the images that traumatized them things they do not want to deal with again. The locker is where one must put their feelings and emotions aside and remember that those people are out to kill you. As a combat soldier, one must collect souls and let God decide their faith. This poem has elements that the reader can imagine as they are reading the poem. The Hurt Locker poem stated facts like "Or when a sniper punches a hole deep into someone's skull" (Kennedy, 2012, p.532). • 15. Movie Analysis : The Hurt Locker War is a largely abstract concept to the average American. It is ubiquitous in news reports, political debates and our culture, but not tangibly understandable. Aside from the small pockets of the population that have experienced warfare, the jarringly focused and rigid representation of EOD team leader Sergeant First Class William James in Katherine Bigelow's film The Hurt Locker (2008) provides insight to a world that much of the audience will never experience. Although The Hurt Locker would be regarded as a "realistic" film in form and content by modern standards, the resulting product would not belong totally to "realist cinema" as defined by French theorist and film ciritic Andre Bazin. Bigelow's directive approach to the film opposes the core of his writings with the use close ups, obtrusive editing, and framing focus the viewer to specific objects and themes. It is through specific sequences of The Hurt Locker that the realist style emerges, creating a powerful, experiential moment for the audience to extract meaning. Through the use of deep focus and wide shots with minimal editing, all prominent in Bazin's theories, specific scenes exemplify realist cinema in this modern war–epic. The major film theorists of the early 20th Century primarily focused on demonstrating film, a widely popular and novelty entertainment, as an art. These early theorists fell into two respective categories: the formative and the realists. The former focused on the formic elements like ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 16. The Hurt Locker By Kathryn Bigelow In classical Hollywood cinema, style, space, and time are unified and uninterrupted. These elements come together to match the viewer's sense of time and space in reality. This is achieved through the use of many techniques such as the 180–degree rule, point–of–view shots, a lack of jump cuts, and other unobtrusive filmmaking techniques. Using these techniques allow the audience to associate with the main characters in the film. For example, the use of point–of–view shots allow the viewer to see the action from the characters' perspectives giving the audience a sense of connection with the actors. Similarly, obeying the 180–degree rule allows films to have continuity in which there is no disruption in the viewers sense of location or... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The camera moves in a hand–held documentary style which allows the characters and the action to enter in and out of the frame. The editing also achieves a fast–paced documentary style. For example, the opening sequence reflects this editing with lots of faced paced, sometimes random jump cuts. The editing in this scene – as well as the rest of the movie – reflects much of the chaos that is occurring. However, in the opening sequence Bigelow slows things down by using a camera that shoots at 58,000 frames per second. She uses this camera to capture the first bomb's blast radius and deadly impact. Juxtaposing this extreme slow–mo sequence with the fast–paced cuts that happened just before causes a distortion of time for the viewer. After seeing such rapid editing, the audience is momentarily forced to really absorb the force of the explosion. The detailed shots of rocks lifting from the ground and rust separating from a car's frame provide a contrast with the rest of the film. The rest of the film maintains a documentary style, meanwhile utilizing the geography of the setting to convey a sense of uncertainty in the audience. The surroundings are conveyed not only through very tight shots, but also through very wide ones. In a discussion with David Pendleton, Bigelow said of the film, "...it's a geographic–centric piece because the audience as well as the bomb tech needs to know where you are in relation to the IED at all times, and that's what kind of ... The film does not focus on the purpose of the war but more so on how the war is conducted. One of the more interesting parts of the movie is James's reaction to the real word. It shows that James cannot cope in a civilian lifestyle. This is very evident when he goes back home to the States. In the supermarket he seems lost, a feeling he never really seemed to have in Iraq. He hesitates when he picks out a cereal; James never hesitated back in Iraq. His inability to cope with civilian society is also very evident when he is in his house. He tries to tell his ex–wife all about the stories he has from Iraq but she does not listen. It appears that being in a bomb squad is the only thing that he talks and cares about. The defining moment that explains James's inability to be a civilian is when he talks his son. He says that there is only one thing in the world he loves. The next scene shows him going back to Iraq and putting the bomb suit back on. This scene in particular highlights his addiction to war. He was unable to have a happy life at home so he needed to go to the one place that made him happy. It can be compared to a drug addict going back into a relapse after a break. • 18. Analysis Of The Hurt Locker And Skyfall The scenes I have chosen for the final project come from the films The Hurt Locker (Kathryn Bigelow, 2008) and Skyfall (Sam Mendes, 2012). The reason I chose these scenes is because they both symbolize the effects of alcohol. The scene from The Hurt Locker involves the consumption of alcohol by the soldiers, which changes their behaviors and actions. They transform from tough, serious characters, to compassionate, childish characters under the influence of alcohol. In this context, alcohol holds the power over the characters in this scene. Alcohol also plays a role of power in the clip I chose from Skyfall; it is the glass of alcohol in this scene which influences Bond's decision. Alcohol, as well as other elements of cinematography blend together to produce scenes where power is the main theme. The scene that I selected from The Hurt Locker is titled "Stuff That Almost Killed Me." Here, we see three soldiers, who go by the names of Will, J.T., and Owen, bonding after a long day at work. It is evident that they have all consumed a good amount of alcohol; the bottle on the table they sit around gives us this clue, in addition to the way the characters are speaking. Next, we see J.T. going through a box of items that belong to Will. As he picks each item up from the box, J.T. asks why Will kept these war items under his bed. Will describes the significance of each one, followed by saying that these are all things that almost killed him. After they disagree about the significance of the items Will kept, J.T. and Will get up and throw punches at each other, but just joking around. The scene ends with J.T. laying on the floor in pain after being hit by Will. In Skyfall, Bond is presented the challenge of shooting ashot glass off of a woman's head. In the glass, of course, is alcohol, the element of power. Raoul (the bad guy) leads Bond to the back of an abandoned building where a woman named Severine is tied up. Bond is offered a shot of alcohol, followed by the rules of a little game presented by Raoul. He tells Bond that the two of them are going to see who can shoot a glass off of Severine's head first. This quote comes from the book 'War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning,' by Chris Hedges, a reporter for The New York Times. It began as a revolt against the conventions of the classic view of art in the late 1800s in America and Europe in the form of an artistic movement (McConnel, R. 1997). There are many themes involved with realism that shall be discussed. These include accuracy and independence. Realists attempt to portray the illusion that their film world has not been manipulated and is almost like a mirror to the real world. Their techniques are different to those of any other film. They try to make the film seem as real and as close to normal life as possible by using natural lighting instead of special lighting equipment, they also mostly use hand held cameras and employ non– professional actors to really uphold this realistic image. The Hurt Locker Essay In "The Hurt Locker" directed by Kathryn Bigelow, the filmmakers accentuate the fact that war and chaos are dangerous and never ending, and yet are addictive in a way that forms the soldiers' passions and ways of life. The filmmakers do this by using unique camera shots and techniques to capture the real–life tension experienced by soldiers, as well as explore different points of views during a situation and by arranging the movie in a documentary style that makes a fictional movie and story seem like real shots of soldiers in the field. The majority of the movie takes place in the last week or two of the groups time left in Baghdad, which is a time where they seem to have some of the most dangerous and technical jobs they have. The three men have to face their own internal issues, while being aware that in an instance, with a wrongly cut wire or a suicide bomber, the team could be killed. The movie is suspenseful and keeps the viewers on edge.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In one scene of the movie the team, kicks in doors, and executes snipper missions. However, in real life, the Explosive Ordinance Disposal units, just like Bravo Company, do one thing well, dispose of bombs. The movie made the Bravo unit, seem like did it all, and made the ground teams like the infantry or the military–police, look useless. This movie was mainly used to win awards, and the director did not do his research to make an accurate portrayal of what really went down in Baghdad. Also the movie had soldiers in the wrong uniforms, poor tactics, and the ranks that the soldiers had verses their leadership roles that were shown. The movie also makes the EOD team seem like their heroes and they travel around by themselves, without being able to contact anyone from the base, when in fact, the team would have access to back up and very rarely went on missions just the three of them. This movie overall seemed to be award seeking instead of getting the raw content of what really happened in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Analysis Of Paul Bigelow's 'The Algiers Motel Incident' If you have a good–sized used bookstore in your town, you might find a paperback copy of John Hersey's 1968 best–seller The Algiers Motel Incident, a report on the events at the center of Kathryn Bigelow's new film. So when the ads claim that Detroit is telling an untold story, what they really mean is "Tis new to thee." And yet I suspect that it will not seem new, nor old, to most audiences–– only all too familiar. Bigelow's film is the nearest thing I can think of to an American counterpart of Paul Greengrass's docudrama Bloody Sunday. In its first act (of three), Bigelow approximates Greengrass's pseudo–verite style, immersing us in the buildup to the 1967 Detroit riots with jumpy immediacy, with great help from her Zero Dark Thirty editor, William Goldenberg. Over time, we are introduced to the characters who will converge on the Algiers Motel, including the members of the Dramatics, an aspiring soul act whose gig at the Fox Theater is abruptly cancelled by the riots; a reckless cop (Will Poulter) who's allowed back on the streets after shooting a looter in the back despite orders not to fire at looters; and a security guard (John Boyega) whose uniform gives him some immunity from suspicion on the part of white police and National Guard troops. At the Algiers, where the Dramatics crash after their disappointment, we meet a pair of white girls (Kaitlyn Dever and Hannah Murray) and Carl Cooper (Jason Mitchell), tenant who puts a scare into the other guests by staging a ... The story began when the bomb tech team leader Sergeant Thompson was killed in an accident. Sergeant James was there to replaced him and the movie was reflecting on various conflicts that the tech team has encountered. Although hurt locker alludes to the typical hollywood heroism and patriotism, in fact, it actually suggested how war is terrible and how it destroy people by delivering 3 sub ideas– how weak and small a person's life is, the misunderstanding between 2 cultures, and the conflict between responsibility and "addiction". I believe that an excellent film is within the eyes and emotions of the audience. After researching and discovering what actually won Oscars and Golden Globe awards, it came down to what the people thought, and the popularity of a film. It is extremely hard to predict what will win these awards before the movie is even released to the public. Before really thinking about the subject, some obvious traits of what I would consider "an excellent film" would be superior acting, beautiful scenery, etc., such as many present categories in the Academy or Golden Globe Awards. Of course I could... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The only other time that this had happened was in the 1950's, for Ben Hur. These definitely have something to do with what makes an excellent film, but I also believe that the personal connection and emotions that someone has with a film is just as important. I feel that the emotional connection that people make with a film is, in most cases, an extremely important quality that directors can emphasize on in /their work. Whether it is a realistic movie that is based off of a true story, or a children's Disney movie, anyone can experience a sense of a character's point of view. Depending on the type of film (horror, suspense, comedy, drama, etc.), this emotional connection can vary among different people. In a classic Disney film such as Bambi, children can relate to Bambi. They can easily understand the type of experiences that he goes through such as having friends (Thumper, a joyous rabbit, and Flower, a loving skunk), playing on an icy pond, and even going through an emotional event of losing a loved one (the death of Bambi's mother). In general, people rarely want to watch films that they know they won't enjoy. This is why there are so many types of films, and different people have different views on what makes an "excellent film". The media can have an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Hurt Locker Stereotypes Although The Hurt Locker details the emotional impacts of war on soldiers and occasionally breaks some male–role stereotypes, this does not necessarily make the film or the presentation of the characters feminist. The depiction of the soldiers generally holds true to standard male gender norms, even though the three main characters occasionally show emotion and weakness. For example, James' friendship with Beckham, a boy who lingers around the base selling DVDs, is that of a father or older brother; James is upset when he believes that Beckham had been killed for use as a body bomb, and sneaks off base and into town to learn Beckham's whereabouts. However, while showing that James is able to care for others, this role is still that of a protector. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Eldridge's guilt and grief over his previous squad mate's death affects him when he is out of the field, and although he is a capable soldier, he remains unsure while in combat, unlike his two counterparts, who are also in higher leadership positions. He is neither assertive nor decisive, and lacking these traits is often associated with being "feminine" (Hyde & Else–Quest, 2013, 62); additionally, men in lower positions of power and who are not self–reliant are viewed as less masculine because they do not uphold traditional male stereotypes. Because of his insecurity and subordinate positon, Eldridge is characterized as less masculine than either James or Sanborn by the viewer of the film. Contrastingly, Sanborn is not afforded much emotion until the end of the film, during his breakdown in the Humvee, where he weeps, admitting his fears of dying in Iraq before he can go home and start a family. This scene is especially important for Sanborn's character, since he is characterized as a no–nonsense leader for the majority of the film and rarely shows weakness. However, it is also important to note that black men are not characterized the same as white men, and are often hyper–masculinized by white dominated media (Wong et. al, 2013); Sanborn's display of emotion helps to contrast popular media's stereotypes of both masculinity and of black ... • 36. Analysis Of The Hurt Locker The statement, "The Hurt Locker is one of the greatest war films ever made" is a loaded comment that forces the viewer to consider several things. First, it requires the viewer to identify what makes a good war film: is it the action, the heroism, the filming technique, sound effect etc.? All these things are important to consider when determining the quality of a war movie. I argue that The Hurt Locker is one of the greatest war films ever made because the film reveals war's brutal side, how it removes the mundane, and its destruction of innocence, while also portraying a realistic hero that one could hope to emulate. The first reason The Hurt Locker should be considered great is because of its accurate portrayal about the horrors of war. Chris Hedges repeatedly states, "[War] is peddled by mythmakers – historians, war correspondents, filmmakers, novelists, and the state... that war as displayed by the entertainment industry might, in most cases, as well be ballet" and it is because of this that the masses get a false sense of what war entails (Hedges 2002, pg.3, 84). The Hurt Locker does the opposite of that, director Kathryn Bigelow decides not to follow the typical structure of a war movie and elects to include the graphic images and sounds that remove the cover from this dream and reveal a nightmare. Specifically, the scene that stands out is when Staff Sargent William James finds the body of a boy who strongly resembles a friend named Beckham, which has been turned into a body bomb. Here the viewer is forced to look at the body, which is bloated due to it being stuffed with explosives, and the crude stitching used to close it. Bigelow elects to use a variety of close–up and medium shots to include the reaction that Will and his squad have while staring at the body (Corrigan 2015). This alone is enough to make the viewer uncomfortable, but where she truly excels is during Will's removal of the bomb. Hedges states that one of the requirement to "wake us up" from the typical film is "the deafening and disturbing noise" (Hedges 2002, pg.84). Bigelow accomplishes this during the bomb removal by adding a loud snap every time Will cuts a suture (Bigelow 2009). Now, even if a person attempts to look away, this ... The focus is evident during the film through a variety of scenes that highlight the human experiences rather than a political one by incorporating numerous film techniques. • 38. The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark's Use of Language to Portray... How do Kathryn Bigelow's films The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty use language to portray the life of combatants in a battle? Introduction Kathryn Bigelow is one of the most iconic directors of the modern era. Her sense of depicting language remains unopposed. She is known for her specialty films of the war genre. Several of her works have been greatly appreciated, such as The Weight of Water,The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty, etc. These have won her several awards and secured her place as one of the most influential directors of all time. Essay The Hurt Locker is a slow paced film. Most of the scenes have been deeply elaborated with excessive portrayal on the character's expression. Set during Iraq War, it illustrates the lives of three soldiers who have the most terrifyingly dangerous jobs in the world– working in a bomb disposal squad. They risk their lives every day to provide safety to the society they are aiding. It is an extremely harsh and touching film, which depicts the message that when you love something and keeping repeating it, it becomes an obsession and you cannot live without it. Most of the characters in the film can be interconnected to the actors where he/she have an unsafe passion. There are several metaphors buried in each scene which, when examined carefully, reveal the political meaning. The lead character of The Hurt Locker, Sergeant First Class William James, is, metaphorically, a character representation of America, often putting him and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Accordingly, war has always deplored a person in to the events that took place while in battle. • 40. Summary Of The Hurt Locker By Brian Turner Even with today's technological advancements, it was still difficult to understand exactly what the U.S. soldiers were going through during the Iraq war. However, Brian Turner's poem, "The Hurt Locker," acts as a first–hand account of the true horrors and pains experienced by the American soldiers. Through Turner's use of poetic form and structure, diction, and figurative language he enables the reader to understand the trauma and suffering these soldiers were forced to endure throughout the war. The poetic form and structure of Turner's poem reinforce the concept of the horrific trauma these soldiers were experiencing. For example, Turner use of anaphora emphasize this message at the beginning of the poem, "Nothing but hurt left here. / Nothing But bullets and pain" and also at the beginning of the second stanza, "Believe it when you see it. / Believe it when a twelve–year–old / rolls a grenade into the room" (1–2: 7–9). These lines show the reader that all the soldiers have are themselves and what Turner is saying is the truth. In addition, Turner's use of lineation further drives this message by ending several lines with words commonly used to describe an injured soldier such as, pain, slumping, wounded, and hurt (2,3,5,6). Together, the negative connotation of these words increases the reader's understanding of the trauma... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
