Mentally Ill And Violent Crimes
Abstract
In recent years, there has been a connection linked with individuals who are mentally ill and violent
crimes that occur within them. Mental Illness is often associated with why people commit crimes. A
person that is considered mentally ill will sometimes steer in the direction of violence. Mental
illness is a term in history that refers collectively to all mental disorders that are diagnosable.
Schizophrenia has been labeled as the most common mental disorder individuals have for the reason
to why they commit violent crimes. Schizophrenia is a very serious mental disorder in which a
person cannot think or behave normally and often experience delusions.

Mental Illness and Crime
Crimes are illegal acts committed by people from "all walks of life," such as: rich people, poor
people, young people, old people, normal people, or mentally ill people. Many people have their
own reasons for committing crimes, but mentally ill individuals sometimes unknowingly, commit
crimes or acts of violence. The reasons and purpose of the research is to identify the most commonly
known mental disorders associated with violence and crime. It is important to research this topic
because individuals who are mentally ill and sick are more prone to commit a crime more than the
normal individual. Studies and tests should be applicable as to why this is accurate. Mental Illness

Minors Committing Violent Crimes and Being Tried as Adults
Should minors who commit violent crimes be tried as adults?

INTRODUCTION:
The reason I selected this topic is because I feel that today's generation of youth and children have
been led mainly because of peer pressure which sometimes cause them to make bad choices. This
usually causes minors to do some things that are wrong before they think about the consequences.
They should be given consideration based on their age and all aspects of their background should be
looked at before sentencing them for violent crimes.

This belief is anchored in the large disparity in crime rates between whites and blacks. However, a
closer look at the data shows that the real variable is not race but family structure and all that it
implies in commitment and love between adults. The incidence of broken families is much higher in
the black community. Douglas Smith and G. Roger Jarjoura, in a major 1988 study of 11,000
individuals, found that "the percentage of single–parent households with children between the ages
of 12 and 20 is significantly associated with rates of violent crime and burglary. The same study
makes clear that the widespread popular assumption that there is an association between race and
crime is false. Illegitimacy is the key factor. It is the absence of marriage, and the failure to form and
maintain intact families, that explains the incidence of high crime in a neighborhood among whites
as well as blacks. This contradicts conventional wisdom. (Fagan, 1995)
CONCLUSION
It is stated and quoted: Today 's children are bombarded with images of violence in cartoons, news
reports, television shows, computer games, movies, and other media. In growing numbers, they are
also exposed to real–life violence in their own homes and communities––as witnesses, victims, and,
increasingly, perpetrators. Too often, children learn that violence is an acceptable way to resolve
conflict. Yet even

Violent Crime: An Intersectional Analysis
Intersectionality is defined as "the interconnected nature of social categorization such as race, class,
and gender as they apply to a give individual or group, regarding as creating overlapping and
interdependent systems of discrimination or disadvantage" (cite). Thus, intersectionality is important
to use when looking at crime. Many researchers suggest that more studies in criminal justice should
be used using an intersectional approach (cite). Furthermore, this thesis seeks to use an
intersectional approach to examine how different factors of inequality shape an individual's
involvement in violent crime. It will also examine structural factors that can contribute to one's
individual involvement in violent crime. Different elements will be ... Show more content on

However, for this study a quantative approach will be used. This is due the goal of empirically
measuring, capturing, or nullifying the "casual relationships" or "differencing effects" of class, race,
or gender on crime (cite). There are several different cases in which quantative approaches have
been used to measure intersectionality through crime. One example comes from Bridges and Steen
in which they looked at racial disparities in juvenile offenders (1998). Furthermore, this study used
written reports from probation officers in which they measure prior convictions, detained prior
adjudications, violent offenses, negative internal attributions, negative external attributions, risk of
reoffending, and sentencing recommendations (1998). What they found was that probation officers
consistently view black youths differently than white youths in their court reports(Bridges & Steen,
1998). This research highlights how a quantative approach can be used to find systematic
differences in individual identities and

The Problem Of Violent Crime
1.0 INTRODUCTION
Violent crime is a serious problem and could not to be neglected in present society. It means all
incidents of wounding and assault with or without injury in the Crime Survey for England and
Wales (ONS, 2015). The crime rate in Liverpool was about 90.86 per 1000 population in police
record by the end of June 2015 (HO, 2015). According to Liverpool City Council (2015), the
violence rate per 1000 population was increase 16.6% from 2013 to 2014 and reach 10.2 from April
2014 to March 2015, higher than other crime. At the same time, the number in 1000 people that
experience personal robbery was about 485, not all robberies would be reported to the police so
maybe the real condition was graver. Hence, violence and robbery continue to be of increasing
concern.
In order to descend violent crime, arrange more police on the street might be a suitable option.
Many researchers found this solution lead to the steady decline of crime rate (Ratcliffe et al, 2011).
However, the expensive cost might limit the scale of this method. Correctional education is also an
effectively solution of offender but take a long time. A combined system of hotspot policing and
prison education may be possible if care is reducing crime rate.
Therefore, this report will compare the feasibility of police patrol and correctional education in
terms of cost and effectiveness, thereby exploring the more viable method to reduce violent crime in
Liverpool.

Vision Statement On Violent Crime
Largely depending on where you live is how exposed you actually are to crime. After two decades
of decline, violent crime in America is on the rise once again. In 2015, there were 15, 696 murders
in the united states, which is ten percent higher than the previous year, this also contributes to a
3.9% increase in violent crime overall. Turning To Each Other is a nonprofit based in Indiana that
offers homicide support, Walking Together functions to help give a presence and reduce violence in
youth, and create more job opportunities for everyone in the community, including ex–offenders
which will help to reduce poverty rates in cities with high violent crime rates. Turning To Each
Other's mission statement is to reduce violence and homicide through direct engagement, the
promotion of education, as well as the fostering of employment opportunities within each
community. Turning To Each Other's vision statement is to implement sustainable programs and a
presence in the community that helps to reduce violent crime in youth's worldwide while creating
opportunity and lifesaving moments. CHANGE SLIDE

Minors Committing Violent Crimes
Minors who committed violent crimes end up usually categorized with adult penalties, instead of
being classified as minors penalties. The teenagers classified with adult penalties end up in prison
instead of juvenile hall tend to receive a horrible fate if not worse. I oppose the thought of juveniles
who have committed violent crimes should try as adults, a point that needs emphasizing since many
people agree that minors who committed violent crimes belong in a juvenile penitentiary. Which, is
how it should be since the juveniles are not of legal age to try as adults. What pushes the matter is
seeing how severe the crime committed was people believe that the minors are aware of what they
are doing at the time of their action. Minors need aid ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It seems that violent video games can not only turn an at–risk child up to a dial on their behaviors
but also low–risk children into a school shooter (Mozes 5). Video games have also been put on the
radar as to one of the root problems of minors committing violent acts. "If a child began playing
violent video games at a young age, then he might think that violence in real life is the same as the
game violence and that it doesn't have a real impact on others" (Gilad 29). While kids play violent
video games, they're not only playing for fun. They are analyzing the which changes their behavior
and actions due to thought process for example, "They start to expect people to behave more
aggressively toward them, and they tend to see aggressive solutions as being more appropriate for
solving problems"(Mozes 5). An understated factor leading to minor violence would have to be
bullying. Gifted youngsters who are bullied for being who they are, eventually would either retaliate
or change themselves to fit into "society" so that they won't get bullied. "The gifted–students suffer
from extreme anxiety, dangerous depression, and sometimes, violence..." ( Gifted Kids 6). The quote
shows that bullying can factor into many different issues, with violence being one of them.

Juvenile Violent Crime And Juvenile Crime Rates
According to (Walton, 2014), as far back as the late 1800's, children have been sentenced to the
same punishments as adults, depending on the crime they committed. Punishments even included
death if the juvenile was deemed to be past the point of help. Later on courts were geared more
towards rehabilitation than punishment. Reform movements came along and parents could send
their children off to reformatories to live and work as part of their rehabilitation. Due to poor living
and working conditions many of these places were closed down.
Soon after the Progressive Era, the first juvenile court system was opened in Illinois. The main focus
of these courts was rehabilitation for the juveniles (Fiorillo, 2013). Juvenile violent crime rates had
increased so much that law makers knew they had to do something to combat all of the violence.
Juveniles were committing murder, assault, rape and other serious crimes which sent the public into
a fear overload. These increases in juvenile violent crimes lead to some of our early "get tough" on
juvenile laws. Policy makers were inclined to push for harsher laws for juveniles who committed
violent crimes.
The increase in juvenile crimes led lawmakers away from implementing laws the focused on
rehabilitation and back to laws that focused on punishment. States began to develop statutes allowed
juveniles to be tried in the same court system and receive the same sentences as adults. These
statutes brought important reforms to the juvenile

Analysis Of Property Crime: The True Severity Of Violent...
Crime is everywhere, as we begin to realize each and everyday crime begins to become normalized.
Each and every day the news about crime is shared, as normal as the morning weather. Whether it is
something as small as vandalism or an individual driving recklessly ending the life of another. With
the connection between property crime and violent crime being made for the reason of gains.
Property crime, categorized as a crime, which includes, amongst others burglary, theft, shoplifting,
arson, and vandalism. Violent crimes are crimes committed against others, such as homicide, sexual

In 2012 to 2013, there has been a decrease within violent offenses in Arizona. According to FBI
Uniform Crime Reporting, since 2010, Arizona violent crime rates have remained greater than the
country's violent crime rate. Violent crimes as measured by four violent index offenses, being
murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. In the case of violent crimes, we will go into detail on
Aggravated Assault. Aggravated assault has been described as the effort to cause severe physical
injury to another. A.R.S. § 13–1204, also defines that the offender commits the assault intentionally,
commits crime knowingly, purposely and intentionally. According to Block (1981), violent crime
could be comprehended as social behavior, which consist of two individuals and their interaction. In
the following case of aggravated assault, it would individual whom attacked an individual, which
results in purposely inflicting bodily injury. Unlike, violent crimes, property crime are one of the
most common types of criminal offense and are offenses taken out against the property. Property
crimes range from burglary, theft, shoplifting, arson, and vandalism. In this particular time, we will
be discussing the property crime, vandalism. According to Yavuz, & Kuloğlu (2010), vandalism is
the act of social, mental, spatial and economical aspects, which have negative effects on the

Teens Committing Violent Crimes
According to the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention show that the number of
Juveniles arrested for committing a violent crime add up to 53,500 in 2014 alone. The crime rate of
kids committing violent crimes has gone down, but kids committing a crime is a problem. Some
people think that juveniles that commit murder or any other violent crimes that they should be
helped and rehabilitated. People also want to abolish sentencing juveniles to life in prison. All
Juveniles that commit violent crimes should be punished, therefore life in prison should not be
abolished for Juveniles who commit murder.
People have argued that the reason why teens commit crimes is because teen brains are not fully
developed. In Jennifer Jenkins article "On Punishment and Teen Killers" Jenkins emphasizes "If
brain development were the reason, then teens would kill at roughly the same rates all over the
world," Jenkins clearly means that if this problem was caused because juveniles brains, then a lot ...

That family suffers the loss forever, meanwhile the person who killed their family member only
receives a punishment that he/she may regret and find it easy to murder again. In Jenkins' article she
mentions that her youngest sister and her sister's husband were murdered by a juvenile while her
sister was pregnant. She then mentions "He reported to a friend, who testified at his trial, about his
'thrill kill' that he just wanted to 'see what it would feel like to shoot someone','' why should people
like this get a second life when the people they killed don't and in this case, the unborn child never
even got a chance.
Therefore, life in prison should not be abolished for Juveniles who commit murder. Teenager's brain
not being fully developed has nothing to do with murder. And why should people be afraid to not
see one of their family members because a juvenile was not thinking

Preventing Violent Crimes In The United States
Violent crimes are unfortunately a routine occurrence among our present society. Violent crimes are
those in which an offender uses and/or threatens to use a weapon in order to accomplish their
crimes. A violent crime occurs in the United States every 27 seconds (Karmen 78). Violent crimes
can end fatally if the offender feels threatened. Many behaviors can be practiced in order to
successfully reduce the likelihood of these violent crimes from occurring.
1. The most fatal violent crime is the crime of murder. Murder can occur in many forms: first degree
murder, second degree murder, serial murder, spree murder, and mass murder to name a few. The
major difference between first and second degree murder includes an offender who commits first
degree murder has ultimately planned the murder, while second degree murder is ultimately
spontaneous. Additionally, serial murder includes killings of 3 or more people within separate
emotional events. On the other hand, spree murder and mass murder are singular emotional events
however spree murder is the killing of multiple people in a number of locations while mass murder
is the killing of multiple people in one singular location. Factors that may increase the chance of a
person becoming a victim includes the victim being male (Davis, Lurigio, and Herman, 135). Living
in the United States in general can greatly increase a person's chance of becoming a murder victim
due to the United States having murder rates that are double

Violent Crime And Property Crime
Abstract
In this paper it is going to discuss violent crime and property crime. It will be discussing the
different types of violent crimes and property crimes that exist. The differences between the two
crimes and there impact on the United States. The statistics of violent crime compared to property
crime in the year 2012. There are many things that may surprise you when it comes to the crime rate
in 2012 compared to 2011 and before then.
Violent crime vs. Property crime I am going to begin by discussing the violent crime. There are 4
main classes of violent crime. These classes consist of: Murder and Negligient Homicide, Forcible
Rape, Robbery and Aggravated Assault. These crimes are usually defined as offenses that include
force or the threat of force. The violent crimes are listed under the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting
(UCR) program. There are other crimes which classify as violent crimes, these include: Burglary,
Larceny–theft and Motor Vehicle theft. The FBI uses a system to classify crimes from the worst
crime, Murder and Negligient Homicide, being at the top of the list, and the least serious crime,
Motor Vehicle theft, being at the bottom of the list. One crime which is listed on both violent crimes
and property crimes is Arson, depending on the circumstances surrounding the offense at the time.
Murder and Negligient Homicide: The FBI classifies Murder and negligient homoicide as: when a
person is willfully killed by another. There

The city of Boston experienced a momentous spike in violent crimes from the years 2004 to 2006.
Violent Index crimes consist of robbery, aggravated assault, forcible rape, non–negligent
manslaughter and murder. These crimes, predominately robberies and assaults committed with guns,
rose by nine percent; the percentage of homicides also increased by 23. The communities
experiencing these crimes were mainly those of minorities such as Dorchester, Mattapan and
Roxbury. Abruptly, the residents of Boston began losing faith in the Boston Police Department and
their capabilities to keep them safe. In order to gain back civility Commissioner Davis and the
Boston Police Department enforced a policing program called Safe Street Teams. SST officers were

They implemented community outreaches to deter the population from crime in a positive way
rather than through fear or punishment and they increased surveillance and security through their
SSTs. The study does not reflect Rational Choice Theory because the SSTs are attempting to control
crime through fear, classical theories do not apply to this study. However, it does reflect Routine
Activities Theory. Routine Activity is defined as "crime and victimization are highest in places
where three factors come together in time and place: motivated offenders, suitable or attractive
targets and absence of a guardian," (Intro to Criminology, page 70). In these urban areas all three
factors certainly come into play. Motivated offenders such as gangs or mislead youth, attractive
targets such as places with broken locks (that the SSTs repaired) and before the SSTs there was an
absence of a constant guarding– authorities only coming when called for specific crimes. According
to this study, the Neoclassical approach is more successful in crime prevention of all sorts whether
personal, property, etc. because crime is not black and white. There are always conditions to
consider when convicting someone of a crime such as be age, mental capacity and number of
offenses. Classical is far too broad to properly and fairly deter

Violent Video Games Cause Violent Crime
The most frequently asked question in recent years is, do violent video games lead to violent crime?
Most people would think that the answer is a simple yes or no answer, but it's not. This type of
correlation is not all black and white; there is a lot of misconception and misunderstanding about it.
In this paper, I will be discussing the history of violent video games. I will include scientific studies
done on violent video games. I will include various crime cases involving video games. I will
discuss the effects of violent video games. Lastly, I will give possible solutions to prevent violent
crime from happening. There is a lot of history when it comes to video games and violent video
games, but the earliest violent video games have been around since the 1970s. In 1976, Death Race
was the first video game criticized for its violence. The goal of this game was to run over human–
like creatures known as gremlins that made an unrealistic human screaming sound when struck.
Since the 1970s, everything has gone downhill. In the 1980s, beloved games we know today like
Pac–Man and Super Mario Bros faced criticism for their cartoon violence. This is because of Pac–
Man killing the ghosts and Mario attacking various enemies to achieve his goal to get to the next
level. One of the first graphic violent video games is Mortal Kombat; this game is a one–on–one
fighting game where realistic human characters usually fight to the death. Soon Mortal Kombat was
under fire in 1992 for its

A Brief Note On Crime And Violent Crime
It may be argued that the media disproportionately exposes violent crime because is more serious,
but with crime in Canada at an all time low, why is it that the media only advertises the numbers
associated with violent crime to be at an all time low and not all crime. How does online news
outlets cover the decrease in crime in relation to violent crime and non–violent crime? The variables
that will be used are online news outlets ' stories and articles regarding the crime drop, and the
reduction in crime (violent vs non violent). The sample will consist of popular online news outlets
who 's articles will be looked over in order to determine what they deem important in regards to the
crime drop. It is predicted that mainly only violent crime statistics are written about because it
comes off as the most exciting, regardless of the fact that it is less common.
It is known that crime in Canada has gone down over the last few years, and that this is or has been
advertised on just about every online news outlet in Canada. This is great! However, we still see
stories about crime in the news quite often, and this is not surprising. What is though, is that the
crime reported on the news is typically only violent crimes, regardless of the fact that crime
statistics typically indicate that only 10 percent of crime committed in Canada is actually violent.
Stats Canada (2014) indicates that there are approximately 340,000 violent crime violations (eg.

Goldstein Tripartite Model: The Relation Of Violent Crime
The relation of violent crime and illicit drugs can be concluded by a variety of different scenarios.
The Goldstein Tripartite Model facilitates it into 3 major instances (Levinthal, 2012).
1: Pharmacological violence is when the cause of the violent crime is caused by the direct
ramification the drug has on the person's mental status, thus an altered mental status is what caused
the violence (Levinthal, 2012). Alcohol, for instance, can cause the abuser to become increasingly
violent and is one of the similar components in many domestic abuse cases according to a
population survey performed in the United States (Campos, Ferigolo, Fernandes, et al. 2011). This
would be included in the realm of pharmacological violence due to the abuser's altered state of mind
being what caused the domestic abuse. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Typically even if a person would not ordinarily rob a home of a relative the chronic need for their
drug may cause them to do it. This was an unfortunate event that happened to me when I was home

me if I did not provide him with the amount of money he needed. I gave him the money and called

Violent Crimes
There is nothing that has done more to tear American families apart than the existence of violent
crimes, guns, gangs, drugs, and the fear that walks alongside those terrors. In a violent crime, a
victim is harmed by or threatened with violence. Violent crimes include rape and sexual assault,
robbery, assault and murder. Violent crime and victim rights are on the rise of major concern for
most of the citizens in the United States of America. |
"When a man is denied the right to live the life he believes in, he has no choice but to become an

(MacBradaigh, 2013) Most of these individual are not properly trained to use their weapon and not

The investigations into violent crimes today are starting to reveal that one of the reason individuals
are harming others is because they are mentally unstable and suffer from some sort of mental
disability. The fact is "the proportion of Americans who describe mental illness in terms consistent
with violent or dangerous behavior nearly doubled." Also, the vast majority of Americans believe
that persons with mental illnesses pose a threat for violence towards others and themselves
(Pescosolido, 1999). There are many individuals with mental disabilities that tend to lash out on
people, not because they want to, it is just a defense because they know they are not normal. Take
people with turrets for example: They scream and hit because they get so frustrated because they
can't complete simple task like normal individuals like brushes their teeth without suffering a twitch
so they get upset with themselves and hit things. A violent crime that has recently taken place in a

Violent Drug Crimes
Peter Wagner, executive director of the Policy Reform Initiative, stated on March 14, 2017, that
nonviolent drug convictions are a defining characteristic of the federal prison systems but play only
a supporting role at the state and local levels. Since the official beginning of the War on Drugs in
1982, the number of people incarcerated for drug offenses in the U.S. skyrocketed from 40,900 in
1980 to 469,545 in 2015. Since it is common knowledge that racism is very much still prevalent in
today's society, I will forgo the argument of racial disparities concerning those convicted for drug
crimes or any crime, for the statistics speak for themselves.

American children represent 32% of children who are arrested, 42% of children who are detained,
and 52% of children whose cases are judicially waived to criminal court." Racial profiling in the
treatment toward the younger generation is one of the driving causes of the future effects we see
happen. For example, these group of young adolescents that are targeted because of their skin color
have to face a myriad of unnecessary obstacles in the aftermath such as not being able to complete
their education, not being able to find a job much less a career, and not being able to be a part of
society. These often hinder their success as individuals and ultimately is detrimental to our society
as a whole.

the particular crimes they commit are perceived as a 'black' crime. (Ted Chiricos, Kelly Welch &

There are many different types of crime. The two main sub–categories are violent crimes and

white males commit the majority of both of these crimes, and make up more than half of the arrests
of all crimes. This is because society makes men feel like they have to show their masculinity and

This social problem is so serious not just because of all of the consequences that follow it, but the
culture that has sprung up today that perpetuates rape and, especially, victim blaming. Child abuse is
a major social problem because many children are abused by their parents, sexually, mentally, or
physically, and some are even murdered by their parents. These abused children grow up to face
future mental health issues, as in depression, suicidal thoughts and behaviors, or low confidence and
self esteem. Child abuse occurs at every socioeconomic level, crosses ethnic and cultural lines, and
is present in all religions and at all levels of education. Child abuse is caused by multiple reasons
including stress from caring for children, especially if the child has a disability, special needs, or
particularly difficult behavior, a lack of resources necessary to properly care for a child, difficulty
controlling their anger (which can be due to physical or mental health problems such as depression
and anxiety, or alcohol or drug abuse), isolation from a family or community, personal problems like
marital conflict, unemployment, or financial difficulties, or a lack of maturity. These two crimes are
not the only two major or common ones, but as you can see, they are a much larger sub–problem to
the big social problem of crime that they make crime an even more complex and important issue.

some even wish the take guns away from law enforcement officers. The arguments against this first
group of people is that is we ban guns criminals will continue to have them, but no one else will
have a gun in order to stop them. A lot of criminals do not use legal means to get guns; they are
more likely to go through the black market or other illegal means. However, the other extreme side
of the gun debate is held by people who are worried that the

Violent Crime Issues
Violent crime has been a part of history since centuries ago. Early Romans and Greeks witnessed a
good rate of crime which lead to development of punishments and written laws such as the Draco's
code and later came ethical issues. As the time passed, new laws were created as human nature got
creative with crime. Constitutions were laid and documented. The United States constitution was
adopted from the English code of laws. Yet the most significant change was the development of
police. The role of police has been very questionable in the past years. There has been a lot of
tension between community and police. It is very disappointing that despite strong laws and police
force heinous crimes still occur. In the past couple years, the major adversarial crime the United
States has been dealing with is the mass shootings. Some of the prime examples of such shootings
are Sandy hook elementary shooting, San Bernardino shooting, Virginia Tech campus shooting and
Orlando, Florida shooting which occurred before the year 2017. Nevertheless, little did we know
that the deadliest mass shooting was about to shake the entire nation.
Sunday, October 1 2017 was recorded as one of the distressing days in the history of America. The
Washington Post states that around 9:40 pm country music singer Jason Aldean began his
performance at the annual Las Vegas music festival. This concert was being conducted in an outside
venue around 1000 feet from the hotel Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. 20,000

The Problem Of Violent Crime
Violent crime is a completely human characteristic. It has dominated our history books, been
sensationalized by the media and created a pervasive fear which dominates our culture. Is there a
way to possibly prevent violent crime? Neurocriminology, a classification of criminology centered
on neuroscience and its relationship between the causes and cures of crime, may have the answer to
that question. Adrian Raine, a criminal psychologist for more than thirty years, proposes that
criminal behavior may have its origins in heredity and biology and future criminal tendencies can be
predicted in children. Professor Raine's discoveries can potentially thwart violent crime activity by
identifying genetic markers which are characteristic of violent offenders. If so, what are the moral
and ethical dilemmas society will now have to contend with when tagging certain individuals as
natural–born killers? Despite this milestone discovery, many questions stills persist such as how
society will react. In addition, though potential criminal behavior may be prevented by examining
genetic markers, the moral and ethical implications of neurocriminology, may lead to discrimination
and the further criminalization of poverty. Human beings are notorious for discrimination. They will
use any means possible to create a case for justified marginalization; race, sexual orientation,
appearance, and physical or mental disability. Neurocriminology may be just another apparatus in
the arsenal of

Violent Crimes Vs White Collar Crimes
White Collar Crimes and Violent Crimes and whether or not they should receive the same priority
levels. This discussion question I feel is like comparing apples to oranges. These are two completely
different types of crimes, usually with completely different victims.
White collar crimes are important and can result in a large loss of money or assets. White collar
crimes are often referred to or viewed as victimless crimes. However, this is not the case. According
to the Federal Bureau of Investigations White Collar Crime website, a white collar crime scam can
do everything from destroying and bankrupting a company, cost a family their entire life savings, or
cost investors billions of dollars, or possibly all three. Scams are extremely prevalent

Victims Of Violent Crimes
Studies show that a common thread amongst criminals is neglected and abusive childhoods. Being
maltreated in the early years of development approximately doubles the probability of engaging in
many types of crimes. The effects are worst for children from low socio–economic status
backgrounds; lower–class youth commit four times more violent crimes than middle–class youth.
Beyond the obvious economical issues of the community, many also find themselves victims of the
"war on drugs" which traditionally targets the low–income population. Children born into this
community are drowning in drugs, alcohol, instability and lack of role models. Even beyond their
broken homes, low–income communities often have poor performing schools crushing any chances

"In England the statistics on violent crimes and sexual offences show a positive picture of steady
long–term decline in violent crimes over the past twenty years (Eisenstat 1999)". In England the
number of violent crimes has fallen from 3.8 million in 1995 to about 1.3 million in 2013. Even
though there has been a drop in domestic violence, it still remains a problem in the world today.
Women are more commonly known for being victims of domestic violence. "There is a percentage
of twenty two percent that are abused by non–sexual partners, twenty one percent of stalking, and
twenty percent experience sexual abuse (Eisenstat 1999)" Men also experience stalking at ten
percent and non–sexual partner's abuse at nine percent. In the United States

Violent Crime Research Paper
Nothing does more to tear our families apart than violent crime, guns, gangs, drugs, and the fear that
walks alongside those terrors. Violent crime and victim rights have become a major concern for
most citizens in the United States of America. Statistics indicate a decline in violent crimes in our
country and an increase in our national prison population. Released prisoners commit most violent
crimes. Gun control legislation, reform programs, victim rights awareness, and other programs are
abundant in our country, but do little to alleviate violent crime. In this paper I will try to present the
liberal and conservative views on this issue as well as my own views.

This differential is in part due to a higher rate of violent crime in the U.S. and in part to more severe
criminal justice policies. The reasons why other industrialized nations have less violent crime than
in the U.S. is clearly not because they lock up more offenders and thereby reduce crime. We could
debate the various factors that contribute to our high level of violence but a failure to incarcerate is
clearly not one of them (Mauer 21–24).
In order to analyze the decline in crime in the 1990s in greater detail the project team examined the
relationship between imprisonment and crime at the state level from 1991 to 1998. The reason for
doing so is that national trends often obscure substantial variations among the states in the degree to
which imprisonment is utilized as a response to crime. During the seven year period, for example,
Texas led the nation with a 144% rise in its rate of incarceration. Maine increased its prison
population by just 2%. The national average increase in the rate of incarceration was 47% (Mauer
21–24). The statistics are significant and they are gratifying. We must be honest, too many families,
and too many communities, still live in fear. Violent crimes may be at their lowest levels in a
generation, but even a single crime is one too many.
Even if statistics indicate a decline in violent crime, citizens are still concerned about becoming a
victim of a crime. Our children cannot

Summary: Decrease Of Violent Crime In The United States
Violent Crime in the United States can be reduced through increased policing, particular types of
law enforcement, and improved discipline for the violent crime.
From the 1960s onwards, crime rose sporadically, peaking in the mid 80s and early 90s. However in
1995, this increase stopped and over the past twenty–two years, violent crime has decreased
dramatically. By the millennium, crime rates had dropped 42 percent, with violent crime falling
one–third. In addition to this, government statistics from 2013 show us that, overall, serious crime
had fallen almost every year between 1994. On the whole, and despite common belief, violent crime
rates are lower than they ever have been. Marvell and Moody (1996), using a "Granger–causality"

Examples Of Non Violent Crimes
By definition non violent crimes are crimes that do not implicate physical harm or use of force upon
another person. The most common of nonviolent crimes are drug trafficking, possession of drugs,
burglary and or larceny. Other cases of non–violent crimes are prostitution, bribery, arson and fraud.
At first I was all for early prison release of nonviolent offenders, why should tax payers have to pay
for someone growing or smoking an herb that's legal in other states? But after much research I had a
change of heart. A crime is a crime no matter how small and criminals should be accountable for
their actions.

offenders to be released early creates a huge incentive for criminals to commit even more crimes. A

Mental Illness and Violent Crime
The stereotype that goes hand in hand with mental illness that though seems to have improved over
the years is still pervasive. Teplin, Abram & McClelland (1994) state that people in general, believe
that people with mental illness are more likely to commit violent crime with those without mental
illness. In their study they seek to find evidence to that statement – to learn if having a mental illness
increases the likeliness of violent crime and recidivism after release from prison. This author seeks
to discover the same using similar data to learn if there is a connection between violent crime and
mental illness. The data gathered in the Teplin, Abram & McClelland (1994) research was conducted

institutionalized individuals in two waves. In wave one; data was collected between 2001 and 2003
and in wave two, between 2004 and 2005. The definition of mental illness for this study was those
with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder which are in line with the other
studies in this review. The data used was obtained from the National Epidemiological Survey on
Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC). This data was examined by the researchers with SAS
where they used univariate rates of violence and bivariate relationships between mental disorder
between the two waves and then multivariable connections to see the relationship between mental
illness and violence. Their results were in contrast with recent findings that there is little connection
between mental illness and violence. The results show that people with severe mental illness have
higher risk of violence than those with no mental health or substance abuse issues. Dorn et al.
(2012) also state that the NESARC data shows a causal relationship between severe mental illness
and risk of violence.
There is an understandable desire among law enforcement persons to be able to predict the
likelihood of a mentally ill person to commit a violent crime. What is interesting to this author is
that a large amount of research on the matter states that there is no connection and no

The Problem Of Violent Crimes
Violent Crimes Introduction Violent crimes occur more than one could even imagine. However,
there is definitely a questionable aspect to these crimes within their court procedures. If one were to
take a closer look at specific court procedures of crimes having to deal with mental illnesses, it will
be determined that it is viewed differently oppose to a sane person. When taking mental illnesses
into consideration when referring to criminal behavior, there is an obvious difference between
actions. There begins to be a question of responsibility within these criminals. It is fair to say that
there is a difference with court procedures. The imperativeness of the courts is extremely important
when referring to any case. There are biological and social risk factors that pertain to any given case.
There is a question as to if these should be taken into consideration when enduring the court process
as an entirety. By taking a deeper look at the biological aspects within a case, the justice system will
be able to give more accurate sentences. Statement of the Problem This ongoing problem on
whether or not mental illnesses along with biological issues should be used within the court process
has been constantly debated about. The information on this subject may not always be as accurate as
needed in order to make decisions such as sentencing. The sentencing of a criminal can easily be a
life changer and if it is dependent on whether or not their mental illnesses are

Gun Control Laws Limit Violent Crime
Founding Father Benjamin Franklin once said that, "Those who can give up essential liberty to
obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." The great American republic was
founded on the principle of liberty for all. The Bill of Rights, which is a pillar of US democracy,
clearly stipulates that all citizens have the right to bear arms. It is senseless to sacrifice this
fundamental right for a false illusion of safety. We can reference previous periods of history in
which the government placed restrictions on products and examine how ineffective they were.
Furthermore, we can look at the absence of a correlation between strict gun control measures and
reducing violent crime rates in US states. It is time to ensure that our Constitution is upheld to
protect the ideals of American democracy. The proposal of restricting US citizens from purchasing
firearms is invalid because they are protected to do so under the Constitution, strict government
regulations on other harmful products have not been effective in the past, and the idea that gun
control laws limit violent crime is a misconception.
As Americans and lovers of liberty, you must exercise your birthright and strike down any proposals
to restrict the right to bear arms. Restricting this right is tarnishing the Constitution, which is the
central element of American government. This is why the importance of upholding the Second
Amendment cannot be emphasized enough. It provides the final line of

Analysis of Violent Crimes
Prof. Angela Madden
Abstract Violent crimes happen every day in America, yet the full scope of why and how they
happen are not understood by many outside of law enforcement. But within the ranks of law
enforcement and the criminal justice system itself, violent crimes are examined and analyzed at
length to determine both how and why the incident occurred, as well as what can be done in the
future to prevent a similar event from reoccurring. Investigators use multiple methods and seek
various explanations as to why a violent crime occurs. This literature will look at some of those
things that investigators try to sort out in the aftermath of a violent crime, such as the killer's modus
operandi and signatures, his psychology, relation to his victims, and how the effect of gender, race,
or culture might impact his violent behavior.
Introduction
July 7, 2016 was already an unusual day and night for the officers of the Dallas Police Department
in Texas. Dallas, like more than a dozen other major cities in the U.S., was home to a massive Black
Lives Matter protest to denounce the shooting of two unarmed black men by police. Officers were
having to deal with enormous crowds, heckling, and mid–summer heat. They had no way of
knowing what was to come next. A lone wolf, with an extreme hatred of police officers, was about
to inflict the worst casualty rate on a police force since the September 11th terrorist

Are violent crimes correlated with the use of alcohol?
Alcohol is a drug that is consumed the world over. It is not thought of as an illicit drug or drug at all;
on the contrary, it is viewed as acceptable and desirable (Hanson, Venturelli, & Fleckenstein, 2018).
Alcohol is connected to festivities, celebrations, and many other positive events. But, alcohol has a

drugs. In fact, in the majority of sexual assaults involve over–consumption of alcohol; this is most
prevalent in young adults. Most sexual assault incidents occur when the victim and perpetrator have
been consuming alcohol (Yoffe, 2013). What transpires is that the victims, the majority are women,
drink to the point that they are defenseless and fall prey to an opportunistic assailant.
In the end, alcohol has been found to be involved in violent crimes. The amount of alcohol is
another factor. Becoming intoxicated dramatically increases the chances of being the perpetrator or
victim of a violent crime. The lesson is that alcohol must be consumed responsibly or one can
become perpetrator or victim of a violent

The Victims Of Violent Crime
Introduction Victims of violent crime experience extreme emotional distress, which is particularly
intense for those who suffer serious physical injuries that require hospitalization. Unfortunately,
most victims leave the hospital without receiving any services to reduce this distress or any
information about crime victim compensation programs to which they may be entitled. Moreover,
many victims do not participate in the judicial process because such participation would exacerbate
the emotional problems they are experiencing and because they know little about it. This lack of
criminal justice system knowledge may further contribute to victims' emotional problems;
particularly if they are called on to participate in the process. ... Show more content on

Although there have not been systematic, detailed investigations to determine the extent to which
graduate programs have included curriculum in the area of abuse, the professional literature suggests
that graduate training programs have largely ignored abuse as a specific content area. Alpert (1990),
for example, noted that there is "relatively little formal education and training in child sexual abuse".
A subsequent survey of female psychologists also showed that student–teacher sexual contact was
quite common (17%) and that, in hindsight, women believed that they were negatively affected by
such contact (Glaser & Thorpe, 1986). These reports of negative effects, particularly when viewed
in the context of ethics and coercion, raise questions of whether such intimacies may in some cases
constitute abuse. Most participants believed that student–educator sexual contact was unethical
regardless of whether it occurred during (96.2%) or outside (72.8%) of the working relationship.
Only 2.5% of the participants believed that such involvements were not at all coercive if they
occurred in the working relationship; only 17% believed involvements were not at all coercive if
they occurred outside of the working relationship.

Are Women More Aggressive? Committing Violent Crimes Today?
The principal goal of this article is to understand 'Are women more aggressive in committing violent
crimes today than in the past?' Authors decided to use data from the prison, collected by Ward and
his colleagues (Ward, Jackson, & Ward, 1969) 40 years while they examined the nature of women's
violent offenses on demand of the National Commission on the Causes and Prevention of Violence.
The authors of this study primary need is to examine whether and how the characteristics and crimes
of incarcerated female offenders have changed. Consequently they try to explain the observed
patterns in women's crimes of violence over the last third of the 20th century.
To draw comparisons with Ward et al.'s findings, researchers rely on the survey data and on recent
research – both quantitative and qualitative – on women's involvement in criminal violence. Main
Finding(s) (Kruttschnitt C. and Gartner R. & Hussemann J., 2008):
The the central questions the authors dressed in the present study is the same as the question which
has been addressed in 1969 – are women more aggressive in committing violent crimes today.
Principally, the increases in female offending were linked to changing gender roles early in the 20th
century (Bishop, 1931).

Summary Of Exposure To Violent Crime
Furthermore, evidence as been shown that an individual being exposed to a violent crime within a
specific time period of an assessment ensures them a lower mark. Sharkey, Schwartz, Ellen, &
Lacoe (2014) affirm, "Black students who are exposed to violent crime in the week prior to the
exam are 2.8 percentage points less likely to pass the exam than black students exposed to violent
crime in the week following the exam," (p. 211). This exposure to crime and lower grades does not
diminish with time. An assumption can be formulated that an exposure over time can perhaps make
an individual immune to some the issues. However, this is assumption is mistaken in that there is
know decline in the negative effects of exposure to crime. McCoy, Roy,

The Rise Of Violent Crimes
Violent crimes are more likely to be reported to the police than property crimes, for the reason that it
tends to have witnesses. Not only can witnesses help catch the criminal, but there's also always a
victim. The victim can report the crime and give descriptions of the offender. Now when it comes to
property crimes, there's not always a witness, the criminal might break in a house, however, the
residents might not be in the home at the moment. This makes it harder to catch the criminal,
because the victims don't have enough prove that they can show when they are filling a police
report. I am actually very surprised that the data showed that 80% of car thefts are reported. I'm
surprised, because even though it's still a high percentage, it

Mentally Ill And Violent Crimes

  • 1. Mentally Ill And Violent Crimes Abstract In recent years, there has been a connection linked with individuals who are mentally ill and violent crimes that occur within them. Mental Illness is often associated with why people commit crimes. A person that is considered mentally ill will sometimes steer in the direction of violence. Mental illness is a term in history that refers collectively to all mental disorders that are diagnosable. Schizophrenia has been labeled as the most common mental disorder individuals have for the reason to why they commit violent crimes. Schizophrenia is a very serious mental disorder in which a person cannot think or behave normally and often experience delusions. Keywords: Schizophrenia, Delusions, Substance Abuse, Murder, Hallucinations, Treatment Mental Illness and Crime Crimes are illegal acts committed by people from "all walks of life," such as: rich people, poor people, young people, old people, normal people, or mentally ill people. Many people have their own reasons for committing crimes, but mentally ill individuals sometimes unknowingly, commit crimes or acts of violence. The reasons and purpose of the research is to identify the most commonly known mental disorders associated with violence and crime. It is important to research this topic because individuals who are mentally ill and sick are more prone to commit a crime more than the normal individual. Studies and tests should be applicable as to why this is accurate. Mental Illness alludes to a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Minors Committing Violent Crimes and Being Tried as Adults Should minors who commit violent crimes be tried as adults? Sylvia B. McCrorey Strayer University Professor Catherine Cousar Research & Writing October 17, 2012 INTRODUCTION: The reason I selected this topic is because I feel that today's generation of youth and children have been led mainly because of peer pressure which sometimes cause them to make bad choices. This usually causes minors to do some things that are wrong before they think about the consequences. They should be given consideration based on their age and all aspects of their background should be looked at before sentencing them for violent crimes. REASONS WHY CHILDREN SHOULD NOT BE TRIED AS ADULTS In reading an article published ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This belief is anchored in the large disparity in crime rates between whites and blacks. However, a closer look at the data shows that the real variable is not race but family structure and all that it implies in commitment and love between adults. The incidence of broken families is much higher in the black community. Douglas Smith and G. Roger Jarjoura, in a major 1988 study of 11,000 individuals, found that "the percentage of single–parent households with children between the ages of 12 and 20 is significantly associated with rates of violent crime and burglary. The same study makes clear that the widespread popular assumption that there is an association between race and crime is false. Illegitimacy is the key factor. It is the absence of marriage, and the failure to form and maintain intact families, that explains the incidence of high crime in a neighborhood among whites as well as blacks. This contradicts conventional wisdom. (Fagan, 1995) CONCLUSION It is stated and quoted: Today 's children are bombarded with images of violence in cartoons, news reports, television shows, computer games, movies, and other media. In growing numbers, they are also exposed to real–life violence in their own homes and communities––as witnesses, victims, and, increasingly, perpetrators. Too often, children learn that violence is an acceptable way to resolve conflict. Yet even ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Violent Crime: An Intersectional Analysis Intersectionality is defined as "the interconnected nature of social categorization such as race, class, and gender as they apply to a give individual or group, regarding as creating overlapping and interdependent systems of discrimination or disadvantage" (cite). Thus, intersectionality is important to use when looking at crime. Many researchers suggest that more studies in criminal justice should be used using an intersectional approach (cite). Furthermore, this thesis seeks to use an intersectional approach to examine how different factors of inequality shape an individual's involvement in violent crime. It will also examine structural factors that can contribute to one's individual involvement in violent crime. Different elements will be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, for this study a quantative approach will be used. This is due the goal of empirically measuring, capturing, or nullifying the "casual relationships" or "differencing effects" of class, race, or gender on crime (cite). There are several different cases in which quantative approaches have been used to measure intersectionality through crime. One example comes from Bridges and Steen in which they looked at racial disparities in juvenile offenders (1998). Furthermore, this study used written reports from probation officers in which they measure prior convictions, detained prior adjudications, violent offenses, negative internal attributions, negative external attributions, risk of reoffending, and sentencing recommendations (1998). What they found was that probation officers consistently view black youths differently than white youths in their court reports(Bridges & Steen, 1998). This research highlights how a quantative approach can be used to find systematic differences in individual identities and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Problem Of Violent Crime 1.0 INTRODUCTION Violent crime is a serious problem and could not to be neglected in present society. It means all incidents of wounding and assault with or without injury in the Crime Survey for England and Wales (ONS, 2015). The crime rate in Liverpool was about 90.86 per 1000 population in police record by the end of June 2015 (HO, 2015). According to Liverpool City Council (2015), the violence rate per 1000 population was increase 16.6% from 2013 to 2014 and reach 10.2 from April 2014 to March 2015, higher than other crime. At the same time, the number in 1000 people that experience personal robbery was about 485, not all robberies would be reported to the police so maybe the real condition was graver. Hence, violence and robbery continue to be of increasing concern. In order to descend violent crime, arrange more police on the street might be a suitable option. Many researchers found this solution lead to the steady decline of crime rate (Ratcliffe et al, 2011). However, the expensive cost might limit the scale of this method. Correctional education is also an effectively solution of offender but take a long time. A combined system of hotspot policing and prison education may be possible if care is reducing crime rate. Therefore, this report will compare the feasibility of police patrol and correctional education in terms of cost and effectiveness, thereby exploring the more viable method to reduce violent crime in Liverpool. 2.0 BACKGROUNG Liverpool is a city in ... After two decades of decline, violent crime in America is on the rise once again. In 2015, there were 15, 696 murders in the united states, which is ten percent higher than the previous year, this also contributes to a 3.9% increase in violent crime overall. Turning To Each Other is a nonprofit based in Indiana that offers homicide support, Walking Together functions to help give a presence and reduce violence in youth, and create more job opportunities for everyone in the community, including ex–offenders which will help to reduce poverty rates in cities with high violent crime rates. Turning To Each Other's mission statement is to reduce violence and homicide through direct engagement, the promotion of education, as well as the fostering of employment opportunities within each community. The teenagers classified with adult penalties end up in prison instead of juvenile hall tend to receive a horrible fate if not worse. I oppose the thought of juveniles who have committed violent crimes should try as adults, a point that needs emphasizing since many people agree that minors who committed violent crimes belong in a juvenile penitentiary. Which, is how it should be since the juveniles are not of legal age to try as adults. What pushes the matter is seeing how severe the crime committed was people believe that the minors are aware of what they are doing at the time of their action. Minors need aid ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It seems that violent video games can not only turn an at–risk child up to a dial on their behaviors but also low–risk children into a school shooter (Mozes 5). Video games have also been put on the radar as to one of the root problems of minors committing violent acts. "If a child began playing violent video games at a young age, then he might think that violence in real life is the same as the game violence and that it doesn't have a real impact on others" (Gilad 29). While kids play violent video games, they're not only playing for fun. They are analyzing the which changes their behavior and actions due to thought process for example, "They start to expect people to behave more aggressively toward them, and they tend to see aggressive solutions as being more appropriate for solving problems"(Mozes 5). An understated factor leading to minor violence would have to be bullying. Gifted youngsters who are bullied for being who they are, eventually would either retaliate or change themselves to fit into "society" so that they won't get bullied. "The gifted–students suffer from extreme anxiety, dangerous depression, and sometimes, violence..." ( Gifted Kids 6). The quote shows that bullying can factor into many different issues, with violence being one of them. Watching videos of school fights caused by bullying taught me there ... • 13. Juvenile Violent Crime And Juvenile Crime Rates According to (Walton, 2014), as far back as the late 1800's, children have been sentenced to the same punishments as adults, depending on the crime they committed. Punishments even included death if the juvenile was deemed to be past the point of help. Later on courts were geared more towards rehabilitation than punishment. Reform movements came along and parents could send their children off to reformatories to live and work as part of their rehabilitation. Due to poor living and working conditions many of these places were closed down. Soon after the Progressive Era, the first juvenile court system was opened in Illinois. The main focus of these courts was rehabilitation for the juveniles (Fiorillo, 2013). Juvenile violent crime rates had increased so much that law makers knew they had to do something to combat all of the violence. Juveniles were committing murder, assault, rape and other serious crimes which sent the public into a fear overload. These increases in juvenile violent crimes lead to some of our early "get tough" on juvenile laws. Policy makers were inclined to push for harsher laws for juveniles who committed violent crimes. The increase in juvenile crimes led lawmakers away from implementing laws the focused on rehabilitation and back to laws that focused on punishment. States began to develop statutes allowed juveniles to be tried in the same court system and receive the same sentences as adults. These statutes brought important reforms to the juvenile ... Teens Committing Violent Crimes According to the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention show that the number of Juveniles arrested for committing a violent crime add up to 53,500 in 2014 alone. The crime rate of kids committing violent crimes has gone down, but kids committing a crime is a problem. Some people think that juveniles that commit murder or any other violent crimes that they should be helped and rehabilitated. People also want to abolish sentencing juveniles to life in prison. All Juveniles that commit violent crimes should be punished, therefore life in prison should not be abolished for Juveniles who commit murder. People have argued that the reason why teens commit crimes is because teen brains are not fully developed. In Jennifer Jenkins article "On Punishment and Teen Killers" Jenkins emphasizes "If brain development were the reason, then teens would kill at roughly the same rates all over the world," Jenkins clearly means that if this problem was caused because juveniles brains, then a lot ... She then mentions "He reported to a friend, who testified at his trial, about his 'thrill kill' that he just wanted to 'see what it would feel like to shoot someone','' why should people like this get a second life when the people they killed don't and in this case, the unborn child never even got a chance. • 19. Preventing Violent Crimes In The United States Violent crimes are unfortunately a routine occurrence among our present society. Violent crimes are those in which an offender uses and/or threatens to use a weapon in order to accomplish their crimes. A violent crime occurs in the United States every 27 seconds (Karmen 78). Violent crimes can end fatally if the offender feels threatened. Many behaviors can be practiced in order to successfully reduce the likelihood of these violent crimes from occurring. 1. The most fatal violent crime is the crime of murder. Murder can occur in many forms: first degree murder, second degree murder, serial murder, spree murder, and mass murder to name a few. The major difference between first and second degree murder includes an offender who commits first degree murder has ultimately planned the murder, while second degree murder is ultimately spontaneous. Additionally, serial murder includes killings of 3 or more people within separate emotional events. On the other hand, spree murder and mass murder are singular emotional events however spree murder is the killing of multiple people in a number of locations while mass murder is the killing of multiple people in one singular location. Factors that may increase the chance of a person becoming a victim includes the victim being male (Davis, Lurigio, and Herman, 135). Living in the United States in general can greatly increase a person's chance of becoming a murder victim due to the United States having murder rates that are double ... It will be discussing the different types of violent crimes and property crimes that exist. The differences between the two crimes and there impact on the United States. The statistics of violent crime compared to property crime in the year 2012. There are many things that may surprise you when it comes to the crime rate in 2012 compared to 2011 and before then. Violent crime vs. Property crime I am going to begin by discussing the violent crime. There are 4 main classes of violent crime. These classes consist of: Murder and Negligient Homicide, Forcible Rape, Robbery and Aggravated Assault. These crimes are usually defined as offenses that include force or the threat of force. The violent crimes are listed under the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program. There are other crimes which classify as violent crimes, these include: Burglary, Larceny–theft and Motor Vehicle theft. The FBI uses a system to classify crimes from the worst crime, Murder and Negligient Homicide, being at the top of the list, and the least serious crime, Motor Vehicle theft, being at the bottom of the list. One crime which is listed on both violent crimes and property crimes is Arson, depending on the circumstances surrounding the offense at the time. These crimes, predominately robberies and assaults committed with guns, rose by nine percent; the percentage of homicides also increased by 23. The communities experiencing these crimes were mainly those of minorities such as Dorchester, Mattapan and Roxbury. They implemented community outreaches to deter the population from crime in a positive way rather than through fear or punishment and they increased surveillance and security through their SSTs. The study does not reflect Rational Choice Theory because the SSTs are attempting to control crime through fear, classical theories do not apply to this study. However, it does reflect Routine Activities Theory. Routine Activity is defined as "crime and victimization are highest in places where three factors come together in time and place: motivated offenders, suitable or attractive targets and absence of a guardian," (Intro to Criminology, page 70). In these urban areas all three factors certainly come into play. Motivated offenders such as gangs or mislead youth, attractive targets such as places with broken locks (that the SSTs repaired) and before the SSTs there was an absence of a constant guarding– authorities only coming when called for specific crimes. According to this study, the Neoclassical approach is more successful in crime prevention of all sorts whether personal, property, etc. because crime is not black and white. There are always conditions to consider when convicting someone of a crime such as be age, mental capacity and number of offenses. Classical is far too broad to properly and fairly deter ... • 25. Violent Video Games Cause Violent Crime The most frequently asked question in recent years is, do violent video games lead to violent crime? Most people would think that the answer is a simple yes or no answer, but it's not. This type of correlation is not all black and white; there is a lot of misconception and misunderstanding about it. In this paper, I will be discussing the history of violent video games. I will include scientific studies done on violent video games. I will include various crime cases involving video games. I will discuss the effects of violent video games. Lastly, I will give possible solutions to prevent violent crime from happening. There is a lot of history when it comes to video games and violent video games, but the earliest violent video games have been around since the 1970s. In 1976, Death Race was the first video game criticized for its violence. The goal of this game was to run over human– like creatures known as gremlins that made an unrealistic human screaming sound when struck. Since the 1970s, everything has gone downhill. In the 1980s, beloved games we know today like Pac–Man and Super Mario Bros faced criticism for their cartoon violence. This is because of Pac– Man killing the ghosts and Mario attacking various enemies to achieve his goal to get to the next level. One of the first graphic violent video games is Mortal Kombat; this game is a one–on–one fighting game where realistic human characters usually fight to the death. • 27. A Brief Note On Crime And Violent Crime It may be argued that the media disproportionately exposes violent crime because is more serious, but with crime in Canada at an all time low, why is it that the media only advertises the numbers associated with violent crime to be at an all time low and not all crime. How does online news outlets cover the decrease in crime in relation to violent crime and non–violent crime? The variables that will be used are online news outlets ' stories and articles regarding the crime drop, and the reduction in crime (violent vs non violent). The sample will consist of popular online news outlets who 's articles will be looked over in order to determine what they deem important in regards to the crime drop. It is predicted that mainly only violent crime statistics are written about because it comes off as the most exciting, regardless of the fact that it is less common. It is known that crime in Canada has gone down over the last few years, and that this is or has been advertised on just about every online news outlet in Canada. This is great! However, we still see stories about crime in the news quite often, and this is not surprising. What is though, is that the crime reported on the news is typically only violent crimes, regardless of the fact that crime statistics typically indicate that only 10 percent of crime committed in Canada is actually violent. Stats Canada (2014) indicates that there are approximately 340,000 violent crime violations (eg. homicide, sexual assault, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. Goldstein Tripartite Model: The Relation Of Violent Crime The relation of violent crime and illicit drugs can be concluded by a variety of different scenarios. The Goldstein Tripartite Model facilitates it into 3 major instances (Levinthal, 2012). 1: Pharmacological violence is when the cause of the violent crime is caused by the direct ramification the drug has on the person's mental status, thus an altered mental status is what caused the violence (Levinthal, 2012). Alcohol, for instance, can cause the abuser to become increasingly violent and is one of the similar components in many domestic abuse cases according to a population survey performed in the United States (Campos, Ferigolo, Fernandes, et al. 2011). This would be included in the realm of pharmacological violence due to the abuser's altered state of mind being what caused the domestic abuse. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The fact is "the proportion of Americans who describe mental illness in terms consistent with violent or dangerous behavior nearly doubled." Also, the vast majority of Americans believe that persons with mental illnesses pose a threat for violence towards others and themselves (Pescosolido, 1999). There are many individuals with mental disabilities that tend to lash out on people, not because they want to, it is just a defense because they know they are not normal. Violent Drug Crimes Peter Wagner, executive director of the Policy Reform Initiative, stated on March 14, 2017, that nonviolent drug convictions are a defining characteristic of the federal prison systems but play only a supporting role at the state and local levels. Since the official beginning of the War on Drugs in 1982, the number of people incarcerated for drug offenses in the U.S. skyrocketed from 40,900 in 1980 to 469,545 in 2015. Since it is common knowledge that racism is very much still prevalent in today's society, I will forgo the argument of racial disparities concerning those convicted for drug crimes or any crime, for the statistics speak for themselves. 1 in every 106 white males age 18 or older is incarcerated. 1 in every 36 hispanic or ... As apparent in their 2017 Criminal Justice Fact Sheet, the NAACP stated that "nationwide, African American children represent 32% of children who are arrested, 42% of children who are detained, and 52% of children whose cases are judicially waived to criminal court." Racial profiling in the treatment toward the younger generation is one of the driving causes of the future effects we see happen. For example, these group of young adolescents that are targeted because of their skin color have to face a myriad of unnecessary obstacles in the aftermath such as not being able to complete their education, not being able to find a job much less a career, and not being able to be a part of society. Violent crimes are against people, such as murder, rape, aggravated assault, and robbery. Property crimes include burglary, larceny–theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson. Young white males commit the majority of both of these crimes, and make up more than half of the arrests of all crimes. This is because society makes men feel like they have to show their masculinity and aggression and competitiveness and fight the system and commit crimes, violent or property. People of all ages and races, and women also commit many crimes, however. Still, the majority of crimes are committed by young people, white people, and males, typically a ... This social problem is so serious not just because of all of the consequences that follow it, but the culture that has sprung up today that perpetuates rape and, especially, victim blaming. Child abuse is a major social problem because many children are abused by their parents, sexually, mentally, or physically, and some are even murdered by their parents. These abused children grow up to face future mental health issues, as in depression, suicidal thoughts and behaviors, or low confidence and self esteem. Child abuse occurs at every socioeconomic level, crosses ethnic and cultural lines, and is present in all religions and at all levels of education. Child abuse is caused by multiple reasons including stress from caring for children, especially if the child has a disability, special needs, or particularly difficult behavior, a lack of resources necessary to properly care for a child, difficulty controlling their anger (which can be due to physical or mental health problems such as depression and anxiety, or alcohol or drug abuse), isolation from a family or community, personal problems like marital conflict, unemployment, or financial difficulties, or a lack of maturity. These two crimes are not the only two major or common ones, but as you can see, they are a much larger sub–problem to the big social problem of crime that they make crime an even more complex and important issue. These groups are made up of people who want guns to be banned entirely. They believe that no average citizen should have a gun at all and some even wish the take guns away from law enforcement officers. The arguments against this first group of people is that is we ban guns criminals will continue to have them, but no one else will have a gun in order to stop them. • 41. Violent Crime Issues Violent crime has been a part of history since centuries ago. Early Romans and Greeks witnessed a good rate of crime which lead to development of punishments and written laws such as the Draco's code and later came ethical issues. As the time passed, new laws were created as human nature got creative with crime. Constitutions were laid and documented. The United States constitution was adopted from the English code of laws. Yet the most significant change was the development of police. The role of police has been very questionable in the past years. There has been a lot of tension between community and police. It is very disappointing that despite strong laws and police force heinous crimes still occur. In the past couple years, the major adversarial crime the United States has been dealing with is the mass shootings. Some of the prime examples of such shootings are Sandy hook elementary shooting, San Bernardino shooting, Virginia Tech campus shooting and Orlando, Florida shooting which occurred before the year 2017. Nevertheless, little did we know that the deadliest mass shooting was about to shake the entire nation. Sunday, October 1 2017 was recorded as one of the distressing days in the history of America. The Washington Post states that around 9:40 pm country music singer Jason Aldean began his performance at the annual Las Vegas music festival. • 45. The Problem Of Violent Crime Violent crime is a completely human characteristic. It has dominated our history books, been sensationalized by the media and created a pervasive fear which dominates our culture. Is there a way to possibly prevent violent crime? Neurocriminology, a classification of criminology centered on neuroscience and its relationship between the causes and cures of crime, may have the answer to that question. Adrian Raine, a criminal psychologist for more than thirty years, proposes that criminal behavior may have its origins in heredity and biology and future criminal tendencies can be predicted in children. Professor Raine's discoveries can potentially thwart violent crime activity by identifying genetic markers which are characteristic of violent offenders. If so, what are the moral and ethical dilemmas society will now have to contend with when tagging certain individuals as natural–born killers? Despite this milestone discovery, many questions stills persist such as how society will react. In addition, though potential criminal behavior may be prevented by examining genetic markers, the moral and ethical implications of neurocriminology, may lead to discrimination and the further criminalization of poverty. Human beings are notorious for discrimination. They will use any means possible to create a case for justified marginalization; race, sexual orientation, appearance, and physical or mental disability. Neurocriminology may be just another apparatus in the arsenal of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This differential is in part due to a higher rate of violent crime in the U.S. and in part to more severe criminal justice policies. The reasons why other industrialized nations have less violent crime than in the U.S. is clearly not because they lock up more offenders and thereby reduce crime. We could debate the various factors that contribute to our high level of violence but a failure to incarcerate is clearly not one of them (Mauer 21–24). In order to analyze the decline in crime in the 1990s in greater detail the project team examined the relationship between imprisonment and crime at the state level from 1991 to 1998. The reason for doing so is that national trends often obscure substantial variations among the states in the degree to which imprisonment is utilized as a response to crime. During the seven year period, for example, Texas led the nation with a 144% rise in its rate of incarceration. Maine increased its prison population by just 2%. The national average increase in the rate of incarceration was 47% (Mauer 21–24). The statistics are significant and they are gratifying. We must be honest, too many families, and too many communities, still live in fear. Violent crimes may be at their lowest levels in a generation, but even a single crime is one too many. However in 1995, this increase stopped and over the past twenty–two years, violent crime has decreased dramatically. By the millennium, crime rates had dropped 42 percent, with violent crime falling one–third. In their study they seek to find evidence to that statement – to learn if having a mental illness increases the likeliness of violent crime and recidivism after release from prison. When taking mental illnesses into consideration when referring to criminal behavior, there is an obvious difference between actions. Gun Control Laws Limit Violent Crime Founding Father Benjamin Franklin once said that, "Those who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." The great American republic was founded on the principle of liberty for all. The Bill of Rights, which is a pillar of US democracy, clearly stipulates that all citizens have the right to bear arms. It is senseless to sacrifice this fundamental right for a false illusion of safety. We can reference previous periods of history in which the government placed restrictions on products and examine how ineffective they were. Furthermore, we can look at the absence of a correlation between strict gun control measures and reducing violent crime rates in US states. It is time to ensure that our Constitution is upheld to protect the ideals of American democracy. The proposal of restricting US citizens from purchasing firearms is invalid because they are protected to do so under the Constitution, strict government regulations on other harmful products have not been effective in the past, and the idea that gun control laws limit violent crime is a misconception. As Americans and lovers of liberty, you must exercise your birthright and strike down any proposals to restrict the right to bear arms. Restricting this right is tarnishing the Constitution, which is the central element of American government. This is why the importance of upholding the Second Amendment cannot be emphasized enough. Violent Crimes : A Violent Crime Essay Brian McMahon Project Analysis of Violent Crimes Prof. Angela Madden Abstract Violent crimes happen every day in America, yet the full scope of why and how they happen are not understood by many outside of law enforcement. But within the ranks of law enforcement and the criminal justice system itself, violent crimes are examined and analyzed at length to determine both how and why the incident occurred, as well as what can be done in the future to prevent a similar event from reoccurring. Investigators use multiple methods and seek various explanations as to why a violent crime occurs. This literature will look at some of those things that investigators try to sort out in the aftermath of a violent crime, such as the killer's modus operandi and signatures, his psychology, relation to his victims, and how the effect of gender, race, or culture might impact his violent behavior. Introduction July 7, 2016 was already an unusual day and night for the officers of the Dallas Police Department in Texas. A subsequent survey of female psychologists also showed that student–teacher sexual contact was quite common (17%) and that, in hindsight, women believed that they were negatively affected by such contact (Glaser & Thorpe, 1986). These reports of negative effects, particularly when viewed in the context of ethics and coercion, raise questions of whether such intimacies may in some cases constitute abuse. Most participants believed that student–educator sexual contact was unethical regardless of whether it occurred during (96.2%) or outside (72.8%) of the working relationship. The principal goal of this article is to understand 'Are women more aggressive in committing violent crimes today than in the past?' Authors decided to use data from the prison, collected by Ward and his colleagues (Ward, Jackson, & Ward, 1969) 40 years while they examined the nature of women's violent offenses on demand of the National Commission on the Causes and Prevention of Violence. The authors of this study primary need is to examine whether and how the characteristics and crimes of incarcerated female offenders have changed. Consequently they try to explain the observed patterns in women's crimes of violence over the last third of the 20th century. To draw comparisons with Ward et al.'s findings, researchers rely on the survey data and on recent research – both quantitative and qualitative – on women's involvement in criminal violence. Main Finding(s) (Kruttschnitt C. and Gartner R. & Hussemann J., 2008): The the central questions the authors dressed in the present study is the same as the question which has been addressed in 1969 – are women more aggressive in committing violent crimes today. Principally, the increases in female offending were linked to changing gender roles early in the 20th century (Bishop, 1931). Now when it comes to property crimes, there's not always a witness, the criminal might break in a house, however, the residents might not be in the home at the moment. This makes it harder to catch the criminal, because the victims don't have enough prove that they can show when they are filling a police report.
