VO: we have expert Molly here discussing the matter, so molly, what are the advantages and
disadvantages of university?
EXPERT MOLLY: Well the advantages consist of a number of things, primarily of course
the fact that university will increase the chances of finding employment of the chosen degree.
As well as it opening up a range of opportunities for the individual such as building social
stability and responsibility for future life. However a disadvantage would include the cost
averaging at £8354 per year, this means many intelligent individuals may not be able to
access the learning opportunities that others can acquire. The entry requirements can be quite
competitive leaving many students being dissatisfied with their final offers. At the end of the
day these reasons do not guarantee success nor failure in those who do not attend university.
VO: So I think what you’re trying to say is that there are certainly some clear advantages and
disadvantages associated with choosing to attend university. But what I and many of our
listeners want to know is what you think personally whether not going to university will
result in serious economic issues?
EXPERT MOLLY: Personally, I don’t think so. There are plenty of examples of individuals
who have become extremely successful by not attending uni, Lord Sugar, one of the most
successful businessmen in the UK, Richard Branson, owner of Virgin and more famously Bill
Gates the second richest man in the world.
VO: Well, there are many other paths to to success that can be taken such as apprenteships,
internships, other job placements that have been known to be more suited and successful for
certain individuals.
