UNIT 4. THE CLIMATE AND BIOCLIMATIC
ZONES
THINK ABOUT IT....
● What's the weather like in Madrid today?
(¿Qué tiempo hace en Madrid hoy?)
● What's the climate in Madrid?
(¿Cuál es el clima que hay en Madrid?
● Why the climate is not the same in Spain and in
Ireland or The UK?
● What does weather mean?
● What does climate mean?
● Are they the same thing?
1) What's the Tº
in Madrid?
2) What's the
average Tº in
Vienna?
3)And in
Moscow?
4)What's the
weather in
Rome?
5)What's the
weather in
Lisbon?
CLIMATE AND WEATHER
CLIMATE AND WEATHER
WEATHER
The day to day variations
of the conditions of the
atmosphere at a
particular place.
CLIMATE
refers to the weather
pattern of a place
over a long period,
usually 30 years
ELEMENTS OF CLIMATE
● There are some elements and factors that explain the
differences between climates.
TEMPERATURE
The amount of heat in
the air.
Measured with the
thermometer
Expressed in degrees
Celsius (ºC)
PRECIPITATION
Water that falls on the
Earth's surface from the
clouds. (rain, snow,
hail)
It is measured with a
pluviometer
(PLUVIÓMETRO)
Expressed in mm
(milimetres) or in litres
per square metre)
ATMOSPHERIC
PRESSURE
Is the weight of a
column of air on a
place.
It is measured with
a barometer
(Barómetro)
It is expressed in
millibars (mb)
(milibares)
TEMPERATURE
TEMPERATURE
THE WARMER THE CLOSER TO THE EQUATOR
Tº DROPS AS WE MOVE AWAY FROM THE EQUATOR
TEMPERATURE: EXERCISES
● The temperature in Madrid today is 7ºC and we are at 700
metres above the sea level. However, Segovia is at 1000
metres above the sea level. Calculate the temperature in
Segovia.
● San Sebastián is at 6 metres above the sea level (almost
sea level) What is the temperature there?
PRECIPITATION
THE WIND
● It's the horizontal movement of air. Its speed is measured with
the anemometer, in Kilometres per hour (km/h).
Why the wind is caused?
Because of the difference in
atmospheric pressure
between two zones.
The wind always blows from
areas of high pressure (A) to
areas of low pressure (D)
On Earth, there are constant
winds due to the amospheric
circulation.
ELEMENTS OF CLIMATE II
Anticyclone: areas with a high pressure. They generate clear and sunny weather.
Depression: areas of low pressure. They generate precipitations.
ATMOSPHERIC CIRCULATION
Atmospheric
circulation is the
large-scale
movement of air.
This large scale
structure of its
circulation remains
fairly constant.
Interpreting cartographic languages

CLIMATE ZONES
The combination of temperatures, precipitations and atmospheric
pressure cause different climatic zones on Earth:
● TORRID ZONES (zonas cálidas)
– Equatorial climate
– Tropical climate
● TEMPERATE ZONES (zonas templadas)
– Mediterranean climate
– Oceanic climate
– Continental climate
● FRIGID ZONE (zonas frías)
– Polar climates
● AZONAL CLIMATES
- Desert climate
- Mountain climate
List one example (country, city, relief, continent) with each
climate
BIOCLIMATES
● Are the conmbiation of climate and vegetation in a
particular region.
Excercise: Join each natural vegetation with a climate
