2. Professor Big-Hair and Professor Bee-Hive have a problem.
They can’t do any work, because their iPad is broken and is
constantly making a noise.
Professor Big-hair thinks if they keep it in a box and wrap
the box in a sheet, they can muffle the sound so they won’t
be able to hear it.
Professor Beehive thinks they should do an experiment with
different materials, to see which one will muffle the sound
best.
She says they should wrap different boxes in different
materials, and see if they can still hear the iPad making
noise.
3. Investigating sound control
• Some materials muffle or stop sound
travelling. These materials are called
sound insulators.
• In week 4 we are going to do an
experiment to see which materials are
best at muffling or stopping sound – which
are the best sound insulators.
• Your job is to find a cardboard box big
enough to fit a school iPad and insulate it –
wrap it in a material of your choice.
• In week 4 we will then test all the boxes to
see which material is the best sound
insulator.
4. Which material are you going to use?
Here are a few ideas but you can use any
material that you like.
• Newspaper
• Bubble wrap
• Fabric
• Cardboard
• Felt
Which material do you predict to be the
best at muffling sound?
• A thick blanket
• A net
• Any other material
you can think of
5. What you will need
A cardboard box – big enough to
fit a school iPad (approx. 15cm
x 21cm x 1.5cm).
The material of your choice – you
must only use 1 material.
Something to attach the material
to the box – glue /tape/staples.
6. What you need to do
• Find a suitable sized cardboard
box and the material of your
choice.
• Attach the material to the box
so that it is covering all
surfaces.
• You MUST be able to open the
box to put the iPad in for
testing.
