2. Font
I used fonts that promoted traditional rock from the website Dafont. I went for
the font ‘char bb’ for my main title as this is a fire like font that gives an
obvious rock feel, and combined with the bright red colour of the font it
helped it pop from the page. From this the audience can instantly see that the
magazine is a rock magazine just from the font combined with the bright red.
The use of this font for the title hasn’t been used anywhere else this shows
individuality and makes the title of my magazine stick out from other
magazines that are of a similar genre. I then used the font ‘Goldoni’ as my text
for the plugs on the front cover this is quite a mature font. I chose this as I felt
it brought more of a professional element to a magazine that would be seen
by many to be quite disordered and lacking structure. I feel that this different
approach to a magazine will help to entice a larger audience who are after
something a bit different to your everyday magazine. I feel that it also brings a
feeling of style, and that readers are getting there moneys worth from the
magazine. This edgy approach will appeal to my audience who are looking for
something a bit different. The use of the font ‘stranger back in the night’
brought a grunge feel to my contents page. This directly attracts people who
are into a darker style of rock, such as heavy metal, grunge or death metal. The
font has horror movie feel to it with its misshapen edges and distorted shape.
This creates interest in readers while drawing them in.
3. Photography
For my main image I used a female model in obvious indie clothing holding an
electric guitar. This image instantly addresses the readers in this style of music
as those who follow indie bands will show an obvious interest in what the
magazine has to offer. This approach could limit my target audience as
although my magazine includes all genres of rock, many people may be put
off by the indie rock front cover and simply assume it doesn’t include their
desired variation of rock. However many who show an interest in indie rock
will often enjoy other forms of rock. This will draw them into see what else the
magazine has to offer. On the contents page I have used a simple image of a
male model on a wall. This dark image brings a heavier rock feel to the
magazine. The model is very much isolated on the wall and seems to be the
only point of interest in the whole image. This creates a target audience of
people who enjoy grunge, heavy and death metal rock. On the double page
spread I have used an image that links back to the front cover showing
obvious continuation as it is the same model in both photos. As the reader has
already seen this model on the front cover it creates intrigue on why they are
in the magazine. This also readdresses readers who are reading the magazine
due to the indie rock element.
4. Colour Scheme
As you can see the colours that I used varied between bright and light
ones. This created contrast on the page meaning that text and images
popped out from the page. This helped to catch readers eyes, therefore
drawing them in and making them want to know what the magazine is all
about. On the front cover I have used a bright red for the font main title
‘Rock’n’, on a light grey background. Due to this it makes it a lot more
obvious to the reader that it is a rock magazine as the contrast of colours
forces the font out of the page. The colour scheme on both the front
cover and double page spread also help to promote the style of music
that the magazine includes. The light grey and bright colours that are used
emphasise a softer style of rock such as indie rock. This therefore attracts
an audience that are interested in this style of music. This can also be said
for the contents page as the use of a black background with the bright red
and yellow popping out from it promotes a darker style of rock music,
such as grunge. The use of these colour schemes will unconsciously
connect with them as they show an interest with this type and style of
music.
5. Page Layout
In my page layout went for an alternative approach to most rock music
magazines. I decided to have a reasonably simple layout. This is because my
main target audience will be teenagers. A lot of the time people between the
ages 16-18 lose interest in certain things if information isn’t given to them
easily. its pointless hiding bits of interesting text within a chunk of text.
Therefore I gave very straight forward plugs on my front page, that were
bullet pointed down the right hand side of the page. This simplistic approach
was used through out, while still including a decent amount of information
without readers thinking pages looked bare. This idea also helped add to the
isolated heavy metal feel on the contents page, as it links to the image.
Through out the magazine you can see the use of 3rds,as the page is
vertically split into 3 equally sized sections. This shows the reader obvious
differentiation between for example pieces of information and images. This is
clearly shown on my double page spread as you can see the 3 sections spread
across the pages. Its also shown on the front page with the plugs down the
left hand side, followed by the main image in the middle, then the next plug
on the far right. The use of this creates an easier read for the audience as
information is easily spread out. Due to it being easier to digest and
understand it makes people want to read on as they feel they connect with
the magazine.
