Sports Betting Scandal
Sports Betting Scandal Since their very beginning, sports have been immersed in society and often
times gambled on. This gambling increased with the rising popularity of college sports, and came to
the forefront through scandals involving illegal betting and point shaving. One such scandal
occurred just down the road from St. Francis de Sales High School at the University of Toledo. In
between the fall of 2003 and winter of 2006, two gamblers from Detroit bribed athletes from both
the University of Toledo basketball and football teams to shave points while they placed bets
totaling $407,500 on the games. The two gamblers involved were Ghazi "Gary" Manni and Mitchell
Karam, Detroit businessmen who had previously been involved in illegal schemes. The four UT
basketball players that were bribed and shaved points were Sammy Villegas, Anton Currie, Keith
Triplett, and Kashif Payne. The three ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All seven of these athletes, however, took thousands of dollars in bribes, as admitted to by Manni
and some of the players. Anton Currie was placed on probation for two years and given 50 hours of
community service, as well as a fine of $1000. Sammy Villegas was sentenced to three years of
probation, and helped the FBI during their investigation. Manni, the gambler behind it all, received a
70 month sentence. All seven of the athletes involved ended up taking guilty pleas. I think these
consequences were justified and fair for the crimes the players and gamblers committed, although
Manni's could have been more lengthy. This scandal helped bring awareness back to illegal betting
in college sports, which many thought had died down. Specifically, this scandal hurt the image of
UT and their athletic programs, but through their investigation they found no other immoral or

Examples Of Diversity In Higher Education
DeMya T. Wimberly HED59060 Diversity In Higher Ed Dr. Gore I would like to open by
identifying leadership theories that fit me the best. Honestly I believe all three fit me and I will
begin with a brief backstory to explain why. Prior to coming to the University of Toledo I spent 17.5
years working for the Lucas County Juvenile Court specifically at the Lucas County Youth
Treatment Center where our charge was to save the taxpayers of Lucas money by lowering the
amount of youth who were committed to the Department of Youth Services in Columbus (Juvenile
Prison). Our program focused on arming offending youth with the skills to re–orient safely back into
the Lucas County Community. We could house 44 youth 36 male, 12 female at maximum capacity

I utilized "Situational Leadership" depending on the task for example as I mentioned before our
ultimate goal was to return youth safely to the community. To accomplish our long term primary
responsibilities I utilized the "Expressive Theory" were our group well–being and work as a unit
was pivotal in ultimately helping the youth assigned to our unit. We accomplished this by having
weekly Wednesday team meetings were staff, the Therapist assigned to our unit and myself as a
team reviewed the cases of the residents up for review usually 4 each week, discussed phase
movements, the unit dynamics overall and instituted individual or unit wide interventions if needed.
As the unit Supervisor I regularly met with staff at least once every other week, performed annual
performance evals, and checked on their well–being often. This was a stressful field and I wanted
them to know that they, their input and contribution mattered. I continuously gave staff feedback,
encouragement and even at times appropriate disciplinary action. I often received compliments from
our Administrator about how smoothly our unit ran and how it seemed to run itself. This was due to
my belief of training staff to do my job or to become Shift Leader/Supervisors and I never felt
threatened and I was very open with my staff about theirs and my goals for them

Capital Budgeting
The main principle of the capital budget is to channel the total distribution of state expenditures for
public services. To present the greatest possible outline of current and planned capital investments
and assure state governments' ability to borrow will not increase nor decrease. This paper will
discuss how the debt capacity of state is established and then discuss and assess the effect of
repaying or reorganizing current debt commitment. This paper will also discuss different funding
substitutes that can be used to support debt commitment. This paper will utilized the City of Toledo,
whose capital budget is a 4 year plan, which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Lee, Johnson, & Joyce (2008), Capital budgets assist in deciding how much of
each type of investment is necessary, and assist in evaluating available revenues (including loans) to
finance those investments.
States and most local governments do not use current revenues to pay for their capital projects. For
example, the construction of prisons, school building, or public university. These projects are
usually financed from bond revenues. The purchasers of the bond lend the funds to the states that are
necessary to finance the project. States, in turn, pledge to pay the bondholders the principal of the
loan plus a stipulated rate of return according to Gosling (2002). According to Lee, Johnson, &
Joyce (2008), In the United States, although some local governments borrow from banks for
temporary operating funds, the main source of debt finance is the issuance of bonds.
Determining Debt Capacity
The City of Toledo has a bond insurance practice, and funds which contains working with fiscal
working groups in planning of the Order, disclosure information, and the organizing of the bond
transactions. The City of Toledo has numerous different fund, as well as the General Fund, the
Capital Fund and several others. All revenues and disbursements flow into and out of one or more
funds (City of Toledo, 2014). The vast bulk of the attention paid throughout the budget

Drugs And Drug Addictions
Thousands of families across the United States deal with a child or family member struggling with
drug addiction; Toledo, Ohio is one of the top cities facing a heroin epidemic. Many people try to
avoid the fact that this epidemic is hitting Toledo as hard as it is. Unfortunately, avoiding this
situation will only allow it to grow and more people will suffer from addiction because they feel
there is no way out. Craig Thomas from WTOL 11 reported that "the drug is so powerful that people
will do anything to get money to get drugs. Police say heroin is causing crime that hits innocent
victims." The route from Detroit, Michigan to Toledo, Ohio is famously called Heroin Highway
because of how many drugs are being transported using that route. If no changes are made in the
city, more drug dealers will gain seniority throughout the city and more lives will be taken. The only
solutions to help this problem are to hire more law enforcement, give the drug dealers a longer
sentence when arrested for the act of dispersing a lethal drug and the best solution would be to open
more detox/ treatment centers for the addicts who are ready to receive help. One solution to fend off
the heroin epidemic is to hire more law enforcement. By hiring more police officers it would put
more men and women on the streets observing more suspicious locations or common drug areas in
Toledo. Which would then help arrest more drug dealers in the area. By taking more dealers off the
streets, it makes it

Introduction
Crime events have the propensity of occurring in our daily routine activities. In order for a crime
event to occur there must be three elements: a motivated offender, a potential target or victim, and
lack of guardianship (Wilcox, 2015). Evaluating my own activity space, I was able to determine my
nodes and paths. By analyzing my nodes and space, I was able to establish a hot spot, which created
a place where criminal activity was prevalent. Using the Routine Activity Theory and Offender
Search Theory I was able to understand crime is prevalent in this area not only because of the
motivated offender but also because of the lack of guardianship, and pro–criminal social and
environmental factors, which contribute to a continuous encouragement of criminal activity.
My Activity Space
I live in a small coastal town called Toledo, Oregon. The town has about 3,500 people and is located
approximately four miles east of Newport, Oregon. I live in a single story wood built home nestled
in a remote section of a neighborhood. The places I frequent on a regular basis in my community is
my work (Toledo Police Department; Toledo Oregon), my wife's work (Fred Meyers; Newport
Oregon), and my kids school (Newport High School). Schneider (2015) classifies the places where
anyone frequents on a regular basis as a node.

Tim Beckman Violations In Sports
Tim Beckman, the head coach of The Fighting Illini collegiate football was fired for allegations of
mismanaging the health of student players on Friday, Aug. 28. Athletic director Mike Thomas made
the decision based on reviews. The University of Illinois had a press conference regarding the issue
at 4 p.m. ET. The Chicago Tribune interviewed 50 players who were coached by Beckman and a law
firm interviewed 90 people while investigating allegations of misconduct. Beckman was accused of
pressuring players into playing despite physical injuries. "Both of those findings are unsettling
violations of University policy and practice and do not reflect the culture that we wish to create in
athletic programs for our young people," stated Thomas. "I

when you were younger". I am a first generation Mexican–American student from the inner city of
Toledo, Ohio and attended a public school district where 80 percent of students receive free/reduced
lunch and the graduation rate is 49 percent. The lack of academic preparation left me adrift at a
university with rigorous academics, such as Ohio State. As a young girl growing up on the east side
of Toledo, there were many mentors who encouraged me to do better and ensured where I was born
was not where I must remain. I'd like to do the same with other children living in poverty and assist
them in overcoming obstacles that present themselves in their

Essay For CIA Position
I am writing to apply for a position with the Office of General Counsel of the CIA. I have recently
graduated from the University of Toledo College of law, have taken the Maryland Bar Exam, and I
am anticipating being admitted in December. Further, I am currently serving as a law clerk on the
Maryland Court of Special Appeals and will be available to begin employment at the conclusion of
my clerkship. I hope my attached resume demonstrates my intellectual capacities and qualifications
for this position. A position with the CIA, however, requires not only the intellectual capacity
necessary to apply the law, but the wisdom to understand the consequences of its application.
Indeed, the CIA regularly makes decisions that have a direct impact on peoples' liberty interests.
These decisions are profound and should be made only with the utmost reverence. In order to
competently make these decisions your agents must have not only a mastery of the requisite legal
concepts, but must also be professional, wise, compassionate, and of the highest integrity. My

qualified candidates that are undoubtedly applying for this position. The gravity of my experiences

Beerman had offered to sell his stores to Rike's in 1959, but was rebuffed by the long–established
rival. Although Beerman's stores had initially brought about a budget orientation by offering lower–
priced merchandise executives had hoped to transform the merged chain into a classier operation b
offering brand–namegoods to his franchised business. However, Beerman claimed that Rike's and
the Federated conspired with suppliers to keep many better quality brand names out of Beerman
stores through an exclusive contract.
Beerman won a $3.8 million judgment, including triple damages which was a stipulation regarding
the antitrust law. The case came to trial in 1969, but the verdict was reversed on appeal. Before the
appeal trial, a settlement was reached in which Rike's agreed to pay Elder–Beerman $1.2 million,
which was the original amount without triple damages. As part of the settlement, the Dayton Mall
had to provide direct access from its parking lot to an adjacent Elder–Beerman store (Funding
University). However, Beerman had accused the mall, and its developer Edward J. DeBartolo, and
its major tenant, Rike's of excluding his company from the mall. After defeating Rike's in court,
Elder–Beerman supplanted its competitor as the Dayton area's most excellent retailer in the late
1970's.

Ipads in the Primary Classroom
The introduction of the iPad/Tablet in Schools In 2010, apple introduced it's newest technology, the
iPad, which promised to bring mobile technology into every home and classroom. With the
introduction of the iPad comes new considerations for learning and pedagogy. (Sheppard, 2011)
McKenna (2012) suggests that the internet is as common a school fixture as lockers and library
books. Additionally schoolwork is one of the most common activities performed online. One of the
motivators for schools to adopt iPads was the ability to use interactive textbooks. The portability of
the iPad made it not only easier to carry than several text books, but easier to use. The other
motivator to iPads and digital textbooks is that the interactive features and capabilities. Digital
textbooks can be updated to contain the most current information.
Pedagogical shift VS. Technology Implementation An appropriate pedagogical framework is
necessary to incorporate iPads into the classroom (McKenna, 3, 2012) It is important that educators
are aware of the difference between technology integration which involves new literacies and
curriculum integration. Newman (2013) notes (as cited in Hutchinson, Beschorner, & Schmidt–
Crawford, 2012) that research indicates that much of the technology used in literacy classroom is in
the form of technology integration as opposed to curriculum integration.

For my student leader interview, I interviewed Cordaro (Cord) Murry–H. He is a junior here at the
University of Toledo and someone I personally look up for multiple reasons. Cord gives off a vibe
that just says, "Hey! I'm a natural leader!" It makes band flow easier when he gives instructions and
it also makes him much more approachable than the head director. Cord is what I imagine a leader
who is dedicated to their followers looks like.
Cord is highly involved in both the Rocket Marching Band and in his fraternity, Triangle. For the
Rocket Marching Band, Cord was a squad leader in the fall of 2015 and is now the Piccolo section
leader. As a squad leader, Cord ensured that those around him knew the marching drill so that
practice ran smoothly. He also assisted underclassmen with learning traditions about the Rocket
Marching Band. As the piccolo section leader, Cord gives advice and instructions to the help the
piccolo section get through practices and performances. He is also our voice and our connection to
the drum majors and directors. Cord gained his positions of leadership in the Rocket Marching band
through an application and an interview process with the directors. In his fraternity, Triangle, Cord
has assumed many positions throughout his time with the fraternity. Cord began his leadership
journey for Triangle as the treasurer during the spring and summer semesters of 2016. As treasurer,
he collected dues, paid bills, and set up fundraisers for the fraternity.

Ipads in the Primary Classroom
The Benefits of iPads/Tablets in the Primary Classroom For many teachers introducing iPads in a
primary classroom is a daunting task. Many educators are hesitant to take the leap to using iPads for
instruction in a primary classroom (Getting & Swainey, 2012). The research of Dhir, Gahwaji, &
Nyman found it is not surprising, that eight and nine year old children are considered
technologically savvy. Children learn differently with technology. Certain skills such as problem
solving, exploratory learning, collaboration, and teamwork skills are enhanced through the use of
technology (2013). Shifflet,Toledo, & Mattoon found in their research, preschoolers were quite
successful with iPads and even at a young age, the use of technology enhances the educational
experience. Mattoon discovered four surprises in introducing touch tablets (similar to an iPad) to her
preschool class, collaborations, digital citizenship, cooperation, and connection to the real world
(2012). iPads also increase engagement, support multiple means to access curriculum, and enhance
assessment practices for all ages of students (Government of Alberta, 2011). Consequently, the
benefits of incorporating an iPad into a primary classroom are evident, increasing engagement,
cooperation, and enhancing students learning is supported through use of the iPad. In the preschool
setting, children immediately took to the tablet with cooperative interactions. Instead of promoting
social isolation, the tablet

PMO Mission Statement
A vision statement is often broad, future looking, and acts as a strategic guiding tool for an
organization to strive for ultimate satisfaction of stakeholders. However, a mission statement is
alternatively more focused, looking to gain buy–in for strategic purposes and culture building, an
internal stakeholder tool. A Project Management Office (PMO) should strive to ensure that
organizational goals align with both the mission and vision statement, helping them to easily
identify projects that are a good fit. Additionally, it is easier to unite a team when they are clear on
the objective from the start, and everyone is on the same page (Toledo, 2013).

2013). This PMO has successfully identified how to reach the mission through these goals.
A generic healthcare PMO mission statement would be: Our PMO is persistently upgrading project

Gradkowski's Website Essay
When I run out of ideas of where to eat, it seems like I always find myself looking at websites of
restaurants near me. A restaurants website needs to stand out and invite a potential customer. The
atmosphere of the website should be similar to what the actual atmosphere is. A good website should
consist of three key things; a home page that captures the attention of a customer, a menu, and a
little bit about the restaurant. Gradkowski's is a new american style restaurant located on campus at
The University of Toledo. Some added features that Gradkowski's website has is private dinning,
event planning, friends, and reservations. The website has a lot of the information people look for in
a website like the hours, but it also is missing some as well. Although Gradkowski's website lacks in

My Most Meaningful Accomplishment

because I will be the first in my family to graduate from high school and now from college.
Graduating from Ohio State is such an incredible accomplishment for me not only because of the
mere fact I am graduating, but because I am graduating from a University away from my hometown.
Within my high school graduating class, only one other student came with me to Ohio State for
college and unfortunately, he dropped out after our first year. Being away from home, family, and
familiar faces made my transition to Ohio State more difficult because I had to learn to be
independent and make decisions by myself, for myself. The greatest challenge for me academically

Apart from the struggles academically, stepping on a campus such as Ohio State's provides a culture
shock to low–income, urban students. I had always been surrounded by students whose parents had

This all vanished when I came to Ohio State and it left me feeling vulnerable and out of place.
Although this experience was difficult, it forced me to find others on campus I could relate to. As a
result, I became extremely involved in the minority community at Ohio State and embraced my
culture. I am so proud of navigating Ohio State's campus both academically and socially, because I
was able to pass those skills and advice on to my little brother, who just started his first year at the
University of Toledo. I have to attribute my success to my parents, who always encouraged and

past teachers who pushed me to leave Toledo, my current professors who push me to pursue my
dreams, and my community/family I found here on Ohio State's

Water is an important resource and weather agent in our world, and the Great Lakes Region has an
intimate relationship with water. The region was shaped by glaciers long ago and continues to be

Mildred Taylor Research Paper
On September 13, 1943, Mildred D. Taylor was born in Jackson Mississippi to Wilbert Lee and
Deletha Marie (Davis) Taylor. She was born in the south but she didn't stay there very long. When
Mildred was born, her father boarded a train to Ohio hoping to find work and establish a home.
Within a week he found a decent job and brought his entire family to the north, not wanting to
continue to live in a racially divided land. The family ended up moving to Toledo, which was a
newly unified town. Although Mildred did not grow up in the south she came to know it through the
many stories her father told her and the yearly trips the family took to Mississippi. A majority of the
stories in her novels are inspired by the ones her father had told her when she was younger. When

I decided that I wanted to be a Physical Therapist so now I have to choose which path I want to go
down to earn my Doctorate in Physical Therapy. If I went to BGSU then I would go there for four
years and earn my Bachelor's degree in Pre–Physical Therapy. Since BGSU does not offer a
doctorate program, I would then have to apply to different universities that offer the doctorate
program, such as Ohio University, in hopes that I would get accepted into their doctorate program
("BGSU"). If I went to Toledo then I would, like BGSU, go four years then apply to a university. In
contrast to BGSU, Toledo has a doctorate program, and when looking through applications they
favor students who have done their undergrad at Toledo so there would be a greater chance of being
accepted, and I would not have to switch universities after four years ("Toledo"). Based on these
reasons, I feel that Bowling Green State University is the best college for me to start my Doctorate
in Physical Therapy. The biggest reason for me is cost because I want to come out of college with
the least amount of debt possible. In regards to size and logistics for my major, BGSU and Toledo
match up pretty closely. Since I am choosing Bowling Green, I am going to have to keep my grades
up extra high to make sure that I can get accepted into a doctorate program. This means a lot of hard

Personal Narrative: A Women's Soccer Team
"Are you ready, Al?" my dad asked before it all started. "Heck yeah," I said, excitedly. It was my
day. "Good luck, play well, and have fun!" "Thanks, Dad." As the hot sun beat down on all of our
determined faces, we ran onto the heat–absorbing turf. Sweat was dripping down our entire bodies,
and nerves sank into our bodies just to reside there for the whole day. "Hi, ladies! I'm coach Monroe,
and I'm the head women's soccer coach here at the University of Miami. First, we will do some

exercises, and I had some trouble with them. Other girls were getting it; however, I could not grasp

Personal Narrative: Dealing With Human Trafficking
As I am not able to attend an event, training, meeting, or conference dealing with human trafficking,
due to my schedule, and my children schedule, I choose to take the extra credit of finding a local
anti–trafficking collation/organization.
After a quick google search of the area around me (Lucas county/Fulton County/Williams county) in
Ohio, I found MANY collations and organizations that dealt with human trafficking. The first one I
clicked on was Lucas County Human Trafficking coalition.

I feel attending one of these meetings, would be beneficial for myself and Education others when a

Body Image And Privilege Research Paper
Reflective Essay
Throughout my years in the Women and Gender Studies program here at the University Of Toledo, I
have enhanced my mental capacity in many ways. Being introduced to the program was a gift.
Feminist concepts, ideals, methodologies, understanding myths, stereotypes was beneficial to my
overall success at Toledo. Using the theories and critical thinking skills that were essential to the
program in my professional and personal life helped shape me into the strong woman that I am.
Intersectionality, body image, and privilege are three major themes that will be ingrained in me as I
continue on my collegiate journey.
Intersectionality is described as the integration and connection of a person's race, class, gender, and
socioeconomic status all combined into one. With all of these things taken place in one's life, they
can cause an extreme strain on a person's livelihood. This concept has been consistently brought up
in majority of my classes. Creating a dynamic where the person will or can be judged and harmed

associated with the woman's body. The debate over body image originated from patriarchal
constraints, deeming that women have to fit into an ideal of womanhood. A woman's body image is
suppose to be a direct link to the man she is with. She should have childbearing hips, a stature that is

The Idea Of Concealed Carry Arms Essay
The idea of Concealed Carry arms at universities is a controversial topic for both students and
faculty on whether guns should be allowed or banned on campuses throughout the United States.
The idea of Concealed Carry Arms is a controversial topic because it represents both protection and
fear as no one knows who has a weapon, whether they have it legally or even if they know how to
use it properly and safely. Also, nobody knows of someone else's intentions with Concealed Carry
Arms as they could use that gun for protection or murder. The idea of allowing Concealed Carry
Arms on campus is a controversial topic that could affect universities and campuses in the United
States. The University of Toledo has had one incident this year with guns on campus. At the
beginning of the semester a person that was believed to be another student pulled a gun on another
student and demanded the victim's car keys. When the victim refused, the gunmen fired a shot at the
ground then ran. This brings up the debate of whether people can be trusted to have Concealed

How Did The Rise Of Islam Influence Western Europe
The rise of Islam brought many important changes to Europe, both physically and culturally.
Through the many conquests of Muhammad and his successors, Muslim dominion, by the middle of
the eighth century, included all of the southern and eastern Mediterranean, as well as Spain. Spain
would serve as a point of invasion for Islamic forces into Western Europe and it would continue to
serve as an Islamic state up until 1492 when its last territory (Granada) fell to Christian forces.
Muslim control of the regions south and east of the Mediterranean led to their domination of the
Mediterranean sea and all the European trade that went on there. All of this contributed to a deep
mistrust of Islam from Europeans, which would make way for the persecutions

The University Of Toledo Levis Leadership Program
The University of Toledo Levis Leadership program prides itself with creating leaders. The program
focuses on giving students with leadership potential the knowledge, skills, and tools to become
leaders not only on campus but in their future careers. For me, the proof of this method of producing
leadership is shown by the upperclassmen in the program. As a freshman, the upperclassmen are my
role models, and I rely on them to set an example of what I can do with my developing leadership.
When I met with my LUT mentor, Emma Diesing, earlier in the semester, she set an incredibly high
standard for leadership. She is so inspiring because she is only a sophomore and has already
achieved so much at the University of Toledo. So when it came to choosing a student leader on
campus to interview, I knew she was absolutely the right person to ask. Each person has their own
leadership style. For Emma, she places communication and hands on opportunities at the top of her
list. It was clear during her interview that she enjoys being involved with other people by leading
activities through instruction. She described being very easy going when leading, only becoming
very deliberate with her leadership if others are not respecting her or the task at hand. For me, on the
other hand, I think I have a bit of a different leadership style. I think I lead more by example than
through instruction. I would rather volunteer and contribute work to my group than communicate. I

When asked who broke the "color line" in baseball, most people would think of Jackie Robinson. An
advocate for civil rights as well as an outstanding baseball player, he became a significant figure in

However, a lesser known player named Moses Fleetwood Walker was a player in the Major Leagues
six decades before Robinson. Although faced with similar trials in each of their integration into the
white–dominated sport, their attitudes were far from similar. Walker wasn't quite as likable as
Robinson and was not as exceptional in his playing. Walker's actions after baseball, including the

The Effects Of Drinking Water On The United States
It is often believed that unsafe drinking water is strictly a critical health issue in impoverished third
world countries. However, in recent years in the United States, one of the most developed countries
in the world, we are experiencing multiple incidences of widespread public water contamination. In
2014, news stations across America were flooded with the devastating water crisis in Flint,
Michigan and though this is the most recent occurrence, it is not an isolated incident. Though Flint
was the most widely recognized incident, in the same year two other distressing cases of unsafe tap
water also occurred in two other United States cities. While several of these cases of water
contamination in the U.S. have been unintentional, other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

During the late 60's and early 70's a series of studies were conducted on public water supplies due to
health concerns, which concluded that many treatment facilities were inadequate (2000). In an effort
to address public health concerns, Congress enacted the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) of 1974,
which was amended in 1986 and 1996 (2000). The SDWA outlines the federal standards for public
drinking water, waste management, protection of drinking water sources, and the financial
infrastructure for projects (Tiemann, 2014).
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is responsible for enforcing policies and regulations
concerning public drinking water. The EPA estimates that the U.S. contains approximately 155,000
public water systems (Environmental Protection Agency, 2015). The three main water systems
include community water, which include residential buildings, transient non–community water,
which include campgrounds and gas stations, and non–transient non–community water, which
include hospitals and schools (Environmental Protection Agency, 2015). Community water comes
from surface water, such as rivers and lakes or from ground water in wells (Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, 2014). However, individual water systems, which include streams, ponds,
bottled water, and privately owned wells, are not regulated by federal standards (Centers for Disease

Efforts to Reduce Smoking Among College Students Essay
Smoking has been reduced over the past two decades, but "cigarette smoking among college
students is of concern because the smoking prevalence among college students did not decrease as it
did among the general population," (Harrar et al. 121). This statement shows the significance of
efforts to reduce smoking among college students. I believe college campuses would benefit from a
"no–smoking policy". This policy would serve to eliminate the harmful effects of smoking and
second–hand smoke on campuses. If students and faculty are not permitted to smoke on campus,
they will have to travel off campus to smoke. Therefore, if smoking on campus property is
prohibited, smokers will be inconvenienced, so many students may quit or at least ... Show more

Although this shows why people continue to smoke, I believe there is another aspect of using
tobacco that is more important. This aspect is why people start to use tobacco products. Without
motive to begin using tobacco, countless lives would be saved, and the addictive drug found in
tobacco would not be an issue (Murphy–Hoefer, Alder, and Higbee 371). There are many reasons
why people begin using tobacco products, and it has been shown that 88% of smokers that smoke on
a daily basis report that they started using tobacco products by the age of eighteen (CDC). This
statistic supports emphasis on trying to reduce smoking for young adults and teenagers. Many
teenagers claim that they began smoking to "fit in". Numerous young people also admit to trying
tobacco products because of peer pressure and social situations. Teenagers are more likely to
conform to fit in with a certain group, or to meet a certain social norm because they want others to
like them. Believe it or not, peer pressure can be a very powerful thing. Although many people like
to view themselves as being in control, others can easily influence the mind. This explains why so
many teenagers and young adults give in to smoking cigarettes or using other tobacco products.
Being an eighteen–year–old college student, I understand that life is very stressful and that it
sometimes can be hard to fit in. However, I also believe that there are

Causes And Consequences Of The Lake Erie
Last summer in Toledo, toxic algae blooms contaminated the drinking water supply of 400,000
people (Toledo water crisis, par. 1). Algae, like all organisms, normally grow in balance with their
ecosystems, limited by the amount of nutrients in the water. But sometimes, algae can reproduce
very rapidly, which causes damage. Harmful algal blooms have been increasing in the United States
to the point where they occur along most of the coastlines and are common in many places:
Specifically, Lake Erie. Lake Erie has been affected by the blooms since the 1960's and is still being
affected. The impacts of these blooms are dangerous in many ways: humans' health is placed at risk,
ecosystems are altered, and marine mammals can either be injured or ... Show more content on

Industrial interests argue that a reference in the text of the law to "navigable waters" limits federal
jurisdiction to waters you can boat on. This has let them get away with discharging pollution into
smaller waterways. Regulators disagree, since pollutants in these waterways drain into and threaten
larger passable waters, too (CLEAN WATER ACT, par. 1–35).
A change in climate can affect the algal blooms, making the blooms to increase rapidly. Strong
winds can also drive blooms to the water 's surface, where water intake pipes can draw contaminated
water into systems serving municipality. Finally, a combination of warm temperature and excess
nutrients can make the algae multiply. Algae can multiply quickly in waterways with an
overabundance of and phosphorus, particularly when the water is warm and the weather is calm.
Toledo did not have much luck last summer. A small bloom appeared directly over the city's water–
intake pipe affecting the water even more (Behind Toledo's Water Crisis, par. 10).
Although climate can play a role in effecting the blooms, agricultural activities have an even bigger
impact on the algae blooms. Agricultural practices, such as no–till cropping, also reduced the
amount of particulate phosphorus.
On March 22, the Ohio lawmakers were on the same path of agreeing on a plan that would reduce
the farm runoff that feeds the algae

Sports Betting Scandal at University of Toledo

 • 1. Sports Betting Scandal Sports Betting Scandal Since their very beginning, sports have been immersed in society and often times gambled on. This gambling increased with the rising popularity of college sports, and came to the forefront through scandals involving illegal betting and point shaving. One such scandal occurred just down the road from St. Francis de Sales High School at the University of Toledo. In between the fall of 2003 and winter of 2006, two gamblers from Detroit bribed athletes from both the University of Toledo basketball and football teams to shave points while they placed bets totaling $407,500 on the games. The two gamblers involved were Ghazi "Gary" Manni and Mitchell Karam, Detroit businessmen who had previously been involved in illegal schemes. The four UT basketball players that were bribed and shaved points were Sammy Villegas, Anton Currie, Keith Triplett, and Kashif Payne. The three ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... All seven of these athletes, however, took thousands of dollars in bribes, as admitted to by Manni and some of the players. Anton Currie was placed on probation for two years and given 50 hours of community service, as well as a fine of $1000. Sammy Villegas was sentenced to three years of probation, and helped the FBI during their investigation. Manni, the gambler behind it all, received a 70 month sentence. All seven of the athletes involved ended up taking guilty pleas. I think these consequences were justified and fair for the crimes the players and gamblers committed, although Manni's could have been more lengthy. This scandal helped bring awareness back to illegal betting in college sports, which many thought had died down. Specifically, this scandal hurt the image of UT and their athletic programs, but through their investigation they found no other immoral or illegal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

 • 5. Examples Of Diversity In Higher Education DeMya T. Wimberly HED59060 Diversity In Higher Ed Dr. Gore I would like to open by identifying leadership theories that fit me the best. Honestly I believe all three fit me and I will begin with a brief backstory to explain why. Prior to coming to the University of Toledo I spent 17.5 years working for the Lucas County Juvenile Court specifically at the Lucas County Youth Treatment Center where our charge was to save the taxpayers of Lucas money by lowering the amount of youth who were committed to the Department of Youth Services in Columbus (Juvenile Prison). Our program focused on arming offending youth with the skills to re–orient safely back into the Lucas County Community. We could house 44 youth 36 male, 12 female at maximum capacity ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I utilized "Situational Leadership" depending on the task for example as I mentioned before our ultimate goal was to return youth safely to the community. To accomplish our long term primary responsibilities I utilized the "Expressive Theory" were our group well–being and work as a unit was pivotal in ultimately helping the youth assigned to our unit. We accomplished this by having weekly Wednesday team meetings were staff, the Therapist assigned to our unit and myself as a team reviewed the cases of the residents up for review usually 4 each week, discussed phase movements, the unit dynamics overall and instituted individual or unit wide interventions if needed. As the unit Supervisor I regularly met with staff at least once every other week, performed annual performance evals, and checked on their well–being often. This was a stressful field and I wanted them to know that they, their input and contribution mattered. I continuously gave staff feedback, encouragement and even at times appropriate disciplinary action. I often received compliments from our Administrator about how smoothly our unit ran and how it seemed to run itself. This was due to my belief of training staff to do my job or to become Shift Leader/Supervisors and I never felt threatened and I was very open with my staff about theirs and my goals for them ... Volume, Risk, and Price Variance Capital Budgeting Ashford University Government Budgeting PPA603 June 16, 2014 Capital Budgeting The main principle of the capital budget is to channel the total distribution of state expenditures for public services. To present the greatest possible outline of current and planned capital investments and assure state governments' ability to borrow will not increase nor decrease. This paper will discuss how the debt capacity of state is established and then discuss and assess the effect of repaying or reorganizing current debt commitment. This paper will also discuss different funding substitutes that can be used to support debt commitment. This paper will utilized the City of Toledo, whose capital budget is a 4 year plan, which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Lee, Johnson, & Joyce (2008), Capital budgets assist in deciding how much of each type of investment is necessary, and assist in evaluating available revenues (including loans) to finance those investments. States and most local governments do not use current revenues to pay for their capital projects. For example, the construction of prisons, school building, or public university. These projects are usually financed from bond revenues. The purchasers of the bond lend the funds to the states that are necessary to finance the project. States, in turn, pledge to pay the bondholders the principal of the loan plus a stipulated rate of return according to Gosling (2002). According to Lee, Johnson, & Joyce (2008), In the United States, although some local governments borrow from banks for temporary operating funds, the main source of debt finance is the issuance of bonds. Determining Debt Capacity The City of Toledo has a bond insurance practice, and funds which contains working with fiscal working groups in planning of the Order, disclosure information, and the organizing of the bond transactions. The City of Toledo has numerous different fund, as well as the General Fund, the Capital Fund and several others. • 13. Drugs And Drug Addictions Thousands of families across the United States deal with a child or family member struggling with drug addiction; Toledo, Ohio is one of the top cities facing a heroin epidemic. Many people try to avoid the fact that this epidemic is hitting Toledo as hard as it is. Unfortunately, avoiding this situation will only allow it to grow and more people will suffer from addiction because they feel there is no way out. Craig Thomas from WTOL 11 reported that "the drug is so powerful that people will do anything to get money to get drugs. Police say heroin is causing crime that hits innocent victims." The route from Detroit, Michigan to Toledo, Ohio is famously called Heroin Highway because of how many drugs are being transported using that route. If no changes are made in the city, more drug dealers will gain seniority throughout the city and more lives will be taken. The only solutions to help this problem are to hire more law enforcement, give the drug dealers a longer sentence when arrested for the act of dispersing a lethal drug and the best solution would be to open more detox/ treatment centers for the addicts who are ready to receive help. One solution to fend off the heroin epidemic is to hire more law enforcement. By hiring more police officers it would put more men and women on the streets observing more suspicious locations or common drug areas in Toledo. Which would then help arrest more drug dealers in the area. By taking more dealers off the streets, it makes it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

 • 17. Theory And Practice Of Crime Prevention Activity Space Michael Pace University of Cincinnati Theory and Practice of Crime Prevention CJ 7070 Dr. Pamela Wilcox October 21, 2015 Introduction Crime events have the propensity of occurring in our daily routine activities. In order for a crime event to occur there must be three elements: a motivated offender, a potential target or victim, and lack of guardianship (Wilcox, 2015). Evaluating my own activity space, I was able to determine my nodes and paths. By analyzing my nodes and space, I was able to establish a hot spot, which created a place where criminal activity was prevalent. Using the Routine Activity Theory and Offender Search Theory I was able to understand crime is prevalent in this area not only because of the motivated offender but also because of the lack of guardianship, and pro–criminal social and environmental factors, which contribute to a continuous encouragement of criminal activity. My Activity Space I live in a small coastal town called Toledo, Oregon. The town has about 3,500 people and is located approximately four miles east of Newport, Oregon. I live in a single story wood built home nestled in a remote section of a neighborhood. The places I frequent on a regular basis in my community is my work (Toledo Police Department; Toledo Oregon), my wife's work (Fred Meyers; Newport Oregon), and my kids school (Newport High School). Schneider (2015) classifies the places where anyone frequents on a regular basis as a node. I will ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Tim Beckman Violations In Sports Tim Beckman, the head coach of The Fighting Illini collegiate football was fired for allegations of mismanaging the health of student players on Friday, Aug. 28. Athletic director Mike Thomas made the decision based on reviews. The University of Illinois had a press conference regarding the issue at 4 p.m. ET. The Chicago Tribune interviewed 50 players who were coached by Beckman and a law firm interviewed 90 people while investigating allegations of misconduct. Beckman was accused of pressuring players into playing despite physical injuries. "Both of those findings are unsettling violations of University policy and practice and do not reflect the culture that we wish to create in athletic programs for our young people," stated Thomas. I am a first generation Mexican–American student from the inner city of Toledo, Ohio and attended a public school district where 80 percent of students receive free/reduced lunch and the graduation rate is 49 percent. The lack of academic preparation left me adrift at a university with rigorous academics, such as Ohio State. As a young girl growing up on the east side of Toledo, there were many mentors who encouraged me to do better and ensured where I was born was not where I must remain. I have recently graduated from the University of Toledo College of law, have taken the Maryland Bar Exam, and I am anticipating being admitted in December. Further, I am currently serving as a law clerk on the Maryland Court of Special Appeals and will be available to begin employment at the conclusion of my clerkship. I hope my attached resume demonstrates my intellectual capacities and qualifications for this position. A position with the CIA, however, requires not only the intellectual capacity necessary to apply the law, but the wisdom to understand the consequences of its application. Indeed, the CIA regularly makes decisions that have a direct impact on peoples' liberty interests. These decisions are profound and should be made only with the utmost reverence. In order to competently make these decisions your agents must have not only a mastery of the requisite legal concepts, but must also be professional, wise, compassionate, and of the highest integrity. However, learning about Elder–Beerman was truly an eye opener for me. Hopefully, this would be conveyed as the reader continues to be enlightened during their reading of this research paper. Elder–Beerman was not only an iconic corporation it had a lot of history attached to its name alone. There were some ownership regarding the company and how the name came to life and the rise and fall of the corporation. During the first resection in the early 1900, this company continued to thrive and make individuals lives rewarding by having reasonable pricing of their merchandise. The owners ... Although Beerman's stores had initially brought about a budget orientation by offering lower– priced merchandise executives had hoped to transform the merged chain into a classier operation b offering brand–namegoods to his franchised business. However, Beerman claimed that Rike's and the Federated conspired with suppliers to keep many better quality brand names out of Beerman stores through an exclusive contract. Beerman won a $3.8 million judgment, including triple damages which was a stipulation regarding the antitrust law. The case came to trial in 1969, but the verdict was reversed on appeal. Before the appeal trial, a settlement was reached in which Rike's agreed to pay Elder–Beerman $1.2 million, which was the original amount without triple damages. As part of the settlement, the Dayton Mall had to provide direct access from its parking lot to an adjacent Elder–Beerman store (Funding University). However, Beerman had accused the mall, and its developer Edward J. DeBartolo, and its major tenant, Rike's of excluding his company from the mall. After defeating Rike's in court, Elder–Beerman supplanted its competitor as the Dayton area's most excellent retailer in the late 1970's. • 37. Ipads in the Primary Classroom The introduction of the iPad/Tablet in Schools In 2010, apple introduced it's newest technology, the iPad, which promised to bring mobile technology into every home and classroom. With the introduction of the iPad comes new considerations for learning and pedagogy. (Sheppard, 2011) McKenna (2012) suggests that the internet is as common a school fixture as lockers and library books. Additionally schoolwork is one of the most common activities performed online. One of the motivators for schools to adopt iPads was the ability to use interactive textbooks. The portability of the iPad made it not only easier to carry than several text books, but easier to use. The other motivator to iPads and digital textbooks is that the interactive features and capabilities. Digital textbooks can be updated to contain the most current information. Pedagogical shift VS. Technology Implementation An appropriate pedagogical framework is necessary to incorporate iPads into the classroom (McKenna, 3, 2012) It is important that educators are aware of the difference between technology integration which involves new literacies and curriculum integration. Newman (2013) notes (as cited in Hutchinson, Beschorner, & Schmidt– Crawford, 2012) that research indicates that much of the technology used in literacy classroom is in the form of technology integration as opposed to curriculum integration. • 41. My Student Leader Interview, A University Of Toledo And... For my student leader interview, I interviewed Cordaro (Cord) Murry–H. He is a junior here at the University of Toledo and someone I personally look up for multiple reasons. Cord gives off a vibe that just says, "Hey! I'm a natural leader!" It makes band flow easier when he gives instructions and it also makes him much more approachable than the head director. Cord is what I imagine a leader who is dedicated to their followers looks like. Cord is highly involved in both the Rocket Marching Band and in his fraternity, Triangle. For the Rocket Marching Band, Cord was a squad leader in the fall of 2015 and is now the Piccolo section leader. As a squad leader, Cord ensured that those around him knew the marching drill so that practice ran smoothly. He also assisted underclassmen with learning traditions about the Rocket Marching Band. As the piccolo section leader, Cord gives advice and instructions to the help the piccolo section get through practices and performances. He is also our voice and our connection to the drum majors and directors. Cord gained his positions of leadership in the Rocket Marching band through an application and an interview process with the directors. In his fraternity, Triangle, Cord has assumed many positions throughout his time with the fraternity. Cord began his leadership journey for Triangle as the treasurer during the spring and summer semesters of 2016. As treasurer, he collected dues, paid bills, and set up fundraisers for the fraternity. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

 • 45. Ipads in the Primary Classroom The Benefits of iPads/Tablets in the Primary Classroom For many teachers introducing iPads in a primary classroom is a daunting task. Many educators are hesitant to take the leap to using iPads for instruction in a primary classroom (Getting & Swainey, 2012). The research of Dhir, Gahwaji, & Nyman found it is not surprising, that eight and nine year old children are considered technologically savvy. Children learn differently with technology. Certain skills such as problem solving, exploratory learning, collaboration, and teamwork skills are enhanced through the use of technology (2013). Shifflet,Toledo, & Mattoon found in their research, preschoolers were quite successful with iPads and even at a young age, the use of technology enhances the educational experience. Mattoon discovered four surprises in introducing touch tablets (similar to an iPad) to her preschool class, collaborations, digital citizenship, cooperation, and connection to the real world (2012). iPads also increase engagement, support multiple means to access curriculum, and enhance assessment practices for all ages of students (Government of Alberta, 2011). Consequently, the benefits of incorporating an iPad into a primary classroom are evident, increasing engagement, cooperation, and enhancing students learning is supported through use of the iPad. In the preschool setting, children immediately took to the tablet with cooperative interactions. Instead of promoting social isolation, the tablet ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, a mission statement is alternatively more focused, looking to gain buy–in for strategic purposes and culture building, an internal stakeholder tool. A Project Management Office (PMO) should strive to ensure that organizational goals align with both the mission and vision statement, helping them to easily identify projects that are a good fit. • 53. Gradkowski's Website Essay When I run out of ideas of where to eat, it seems like I always find myself looking at websites of restaurants near me. A restaurants website needs to stand out and invite a potential customer. The atmosphere of the website should be similar to what the actual atmosphere is. A good website should consist of three key things; a home page that captures the attention of a customer, a menu, and a little bit about the restaurant. Gradkowski's is a new american style restaurant located on campus at The University of Toledo. Some added features that Gradkowski's website has is private dinning, event planning, friends, and reservations. The website has a lot of the information people look for in a website like the hours, but it also is missing some as well. Although Gradkowski's website lacks in some areas, it still does a good job attracting customers. Gradkowski's has a unique layout starting with the home page. Even if someone is from Toledo or not, it still warms the heart and attracts customers. Under the paragraph is a quote from the owner of Gradkowski's, Bruce Gradkowski. Bruce went to school at UT and played quarterback for the Rockets while he attended. I am proud of this because I will be the first in my family to graduate from high school and now from college. Graduating from Ohio State is such an incredible accomplishment for me not only because of the mere fact I am graduating, but because I am graduating from a University away from my hometown. Within my high school graduating class, only one other student came with me to Ohio State for college and unfortunately, he dropped out after our first year. Apart from the struggles academically, stepping on a campus such as Ohio State's provides a culture shock to low–income, urban students. I had always been surrounded by students whose parents had not graduated from high school, who struggled financially, and who were predominately Latino. This all vanished when I came to Ohio State and it left me feeling vulnerable and out of place. Although this experience was difficult, it forced me to find others on campus I could relate to. As a result, I became extremely involved in the minority community at Ohio State and embraced my culture. I am so proud of navigating Ohio State's campus both academically and socially, because I was able to pass those skills and advice on to my little brother, who just started his first year at the University of Toledo. I have to attribute my success to my parents, who always encouraged and inspired me, even if they didn't truly understand the stress and hardships I was going through, my past teachers who pushed me to leave Toledo, my current professors who push me to pursue my dreams, and my community/family I found here on Ohio State's ... She was born in the south but she didn't stay there very long. When Mildred was born, her father boarded a train to Ohio hoping to find work and establish a home. Within a week he found a decent job and brought his entire family to the north, not wanting to continue to live in a racially divided land. The family ended up moving to Toledo, which was a newly unified town. Although Mildred did not grow up in the south she came to know it through the many stories her father told her and the yearly trips the family took to Mississippi. A majority of the stories in her novels are inspired by the ones her father had told her when she was younger. I Want To Become A Pre-Physical Therapist To B.G. or Not to Be Choosing what to do after high school is a major decision in life and for most it is the first big decision that will lead to many others. When I met with my LUT mentor, Emma Diesing, earlier in the semester, she set an incredibly high standard for leadership. She is so inspiring because she is only a sophomore and has already achieved so much at the University of Toledo. So when it came to choosing a student leader on campus to interview, I knew she was absolutely the right person to ask. Each person has their own leadership style. For Emma, she places communication and hands on opportunities at the top of her list. It was clear during her interview that she enjoys being involved with other people by leading activities through instruction. She described being very easy going when leading, only becoming very deliberate with her leadership if others are not respecting her or the task at hand. For me, on the other hand, I think I have a bit of a different leadership style. I think I lead more by example than through instruction. I would rather volunteer and contribute work to my group than communicate. I tend to be very serious ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Society Vs American Society On July 17th 2016, I stood in front of the presidential hall of the University of Toledo gazing at the beauty of the architecture the college building possessed, and I anticipated what the University of Toledo had to teach me through the youth nations program. I along with the hundreds of other students from all over the country, stood there glancing around, with our ambitious eyes, and hopes to get what University of Toledo has to offer. As I walked in and met the students, professors and attended the one week long camp, I started to realize that the University of Toledo and I had the same thing in common, same vision, same goal: to help flourish what already exists. It is a simple, innocent question but always seems to precede a complicated response. Many consider this the most difficult decision of their young lives. To decide the career path for the rest of their lives, much less a college, can nearly fry someone's brain. There are always a myriad of suggestions from parents, teachers, and friends who all seem to know what is 'best'. This is the first decision in which the senior gets to make on their own and start making their own path in the world. Even though all colleges might seem the same before senior year, the pros and cons can be outstanding. Ohio Northern University is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also, the sizes of the two are on opposite sides of the spectrum. ONU is located in Ada, Ohio. It is a small town of less than 6,000 people ("Ohio Northern University"). Since ONU is in such a small town, the university is small and private. This university has about 3,000 students ("Ohio Northern University"). The University of Toledo has a much bigger campus and is located in one of the biggest cities in Ohio. Usually the crime rate in a bigger city is greater than in a small town. In 2012, the crime rate in Toledo, Ohio was recorded as 632.5 while the crime rate in Ada was 77.9 ("City– Data"). The University of Toledo is aware of this crime rate and offers a service in which security guards will pick up a student and deliver them to their dorm room ("University of Toledo"). This is a popular service if a student have the habit of late–night studying. Along with the location of the universities, the distance from home also needs to be considered. The University of Toledo is roughly one hour away while the Ohio Northern University is about forty minutes away. The distance is very important to know for commuting or returning home for vacation. • 129. Jackie Robinson's Reactions To Walker In Baseball When asked who broke the "color line" in baseball, most people would think of Jackie Robinson. An advocate for civil rights as well as an outstanding baseball player, he became a significant figure in American history, and is widely recognized as the first black baseball player in the Major Leagues. However, a lesser known player named Moses Fleetwood Walker was a player in the Major Leagues six decades before Robinson. Although faced with similar trials in each of their integration into the white–dominated sport, their attitudes were far from similar. Walker wasn't quite as likable as Robinson and was not as exceptional in his playing. He began playing football for the Honolulu Bears, but this was also cut short when the United States entered World War I. He served in the army for two years, from 1942–1944, as a secondhand lieutenant. Robinson was arrested in 1945 for refusing to give up his seat on a public bus, but later he was acquitted. After his time in the army, he began playing baseball professionally in an all African American league for the Kansas City Monarchs (Dorinson). Branch Rickey, president of the Brooklyn Dodgers, chose Robinson to begin to integrate Major League Baseball. This became known as "Rickey's Noble Experiment" (Robinson). He saw good character in Robinson, and knew he could get positive press and support from the African American community. Robinson started by playing for the Montreal Royals in 1946, and Rickey prepared Robinson for the trials he would soon face. Similar to Walker, reactions to him weren't always positive. • 141. The Effects Of Drinking Water On The United States It is often believed that unsafe drinking water is strictly a critical health issue in impoverished third world countries. However, in recent years in the United States, one of the most developed countries in the world, we are experiencing multiple incidences of widespread public water contamination. In 2014, news stations across America were flooded with the devastating water crisis in Flint, Michigan and though this is the most recent occurrence, it is not an isolated incident. Though Flint was the most widely recognized incident, in the same year two other distressing cases of unsafe tap water also occurred in two other United States cities. While several of these cases of water contamination in the U.S. have been unintentional, other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During the late 60's and early 70's a series of studies were conducted on public water supplies due to health concerns, which concluded that many treatment facilities were inadequate (2000). In an effort to address public health concerns, Congress enacted the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) of 1974, which was amended in 1986 and 1996 (2000). The SDWA outlines the federal standards for public drinking water, waste management, protection of drinking water sources, and the financial infrastructure for projects (Tiemann, 2014). The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is responsible for enforcing policies and regulations concerning public drinking water. The EPA estimates that the U.S. contains approximately 155,000 public water systems (Environmental Protection Agency, 2015). The three main water systems include community water, which include residential buildings, transient non–community water, which include campgrounds and gas stations, and non–transient non–community water, which include hospitals and schools (Environmental Protection Agency, 2015). Community water comes from surface water, such as rivers and lakes or from ground water in wells (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2014). However, individual water systems, which include streams, ponds, bottled water, and privately owned wells, are not regulated by federal standards (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2014). • 145. Efforts to Reduce Smoking Among College Students Essay Smoking has been reduced over the past two decades, but "cigarette smoking among college students is of concern because the smoking prevalence among college students did not decrease as it did among the general population," (Harrar et al. 121). This statement shows the significance of efforts to reduce smoking among college students. I believe college campuses would benefit from a "no–smoking policy". This policy would serve to eliminate the harmful effects of smoking and second–hand smoke on campuses. If students and faculty are not permitted to smoke on campus, they will have to travel off campus to smoke. Therefore, if smoking on campus property is prohibited, smokers will be inconvenienced, so many students may quit or at least ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although this shows why people continue to smoke, I believe there is another aspect of using tobacco that is more important. This aspect is why people start to use tobacco products. Without motive to begin using tobacco, countless lives would be saved, and the addictive drug found in tobacco would not be an issue (Murphy–Hoefer, Alder, and Higbee 371). There are many reasons why people begin using tobacco products, and it has been shown that 88% of smokers that smoke on a daily basis report that they started using tobacco products by the age of eighteen (CDC). This statistic supports emphasis on trying to reduce smoking for young adults and teenagers. Many teenagers claim that they began smoking to "fit in". Numerous young people also admit to trying tobacco products because of peer pressure and social situations. Teenagers are more likely to conform to fit in with a certain group, or to meet a certain social norm because they want others to like them. Believe it or not, peer pressure can be a very powerful thing. Although many people like to view themselves as being in control, others can easily influence the mind. This explains why so many teenagers and young adults give in to smoking cigarettes or using other tobacco products. Being an eighteen–year–old college student, I understand that life is very stressful and that it sometimes can be hard to fit in. However, I also believe that there are ... • 153. Causes And Consequences Of The Lake Erie Last summer in Toledo, toxic algae blooms contaminated the drinking water supply of 400,000 people (Toledo water crisis, par. 1). Algae, like all organisms, normally grow in balance with their ecosystems, limited by the amount of nutrients in the water. But sometimes, algae can reproduce very rapidly, which causes damage. Harmful algal blooms have been increasing in the United States to the point where they occur along most of the coastlines and are common in many places: Specifically, Lake Erie. Lake Erie has been affected by the blooms since the 1960's and is still being affected. The impacts of these blooms are dangerous in many ways: humans' health is placed at risk, ecosystems are altered, and marine mammals can either be injured or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Industrial interests argue that a reference in the text of the law to "navigable waters" limits federal jurisdiction to waters you can boat on. This has let them get away with discharging pollution into smaller waterways. Regulators disagree, since pollutants in these waterways drain into and threaten larger passable waters, too (CLEAN WATER ACT, par. 1–35). A change in climate can affect the algal blooms, making the blooms to increase rapidly. Strong winds can also drive blooms to the water 's surface, where water intake pipes can draw contaminated water into systems serving municipality. Finally, a combination of warm temperature and excess nutrients can make the algae multiply. Algae can multiply quickly in waterways with an overabundance of and phosphorus, particularly when the water is warm and the weather is calm. Toledo did not have much luck last summer. A small bloom appeared directly over the city's water– intake pipe affecting the water even more (Behind Toledo's Water Crisis, par. 10). Although climate can play a role in effecting the blooms, agricultural activities have an even bigger impact on the algae blooms. Agricultural practices, such as no–till cropping, also reduced the amount of particulate phosphorus. On March 22, the Ohio lawmakers were on the same path of agreeing on a plan that would reduce the farm runoff that feeds the algae ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
