Sexual Harassment And Gender Harassment
1. Introduction
It is perhaps an exaggeration to recommend that no hypothetical work has been done around the area
of Sexual Harassment, as the primary systematic attempt to outline theoretical space of Sexual
Harassment and build up a complete classification system had started in the year 1980 (Fitzgerald et
al. 2010). Sexual Harassment is defined as the unprompted male conduct that asserts a women's sex
role over her function as employee or intimidation of a sexual nature or the inappropriate promises
of rewards in return for sexual favors (Fitzgerald 1990). In most of the modern cultures, it is very
illegal and illegitimate to intimidate a person because of person's sex. Sexual harassment is an issue
which has been prevailing in the current workplace and is a major attribute that prompts the
effectiveness of an organization as it plays a main role in the happiness of the employees which in
turn results in goals of overall company to be achieved (Reese et al. 2004). Employers should make
this a top priority and see that it is not effecting the performance of employees to achieve the goals
of the organization (Collier 1995). Information had been gathered through a survey which included
females from two diverse cultures who worked in a public–sector company. The results showed that
inappropriate behavior and sexual harassment were co–related and harassment based on gender was
a bridge amongst the two behaviors. In addition, these practices tend to happen again and

Causes And Effects Of Sexual Harassment
Everyone thinks that Sexual Harassment is infrequent, but speaking from experience it can happen
at anytime , any day , and any age. I was sexually harassed at the age of 11, and I was so terrified
even now it makes my skin crawl. I wish I would have reported it or spoke up, but instead I lived
with the self–condemnation , shame, and thoughts in my head. Although people do not think much
of Sexual Harassment it occurs too often, and its effects may last a lifetime on all victims whether
female, male, teen, child, adult, or elder. The effects can range from depression to suicide; however,
help is available for coping. First of all Suicide yes, suicideit's a very touchy subject for most
people, but sexual Harassment can play a role in it. Suicide is a major effect and the most common
effect of sexual harassment victims. A study found that 23 percent of students had experienced at
least one incident of unwanted sexual touching, sexual threats or remarks, or indecent exposure in
the past six months. Of women who had experienced frequent, unwanted sexual touching, 15
percent said they had made suicide attempts "often" in the past six months, compared with 2 percent
of students that had not experienced sexual harassment.(Rettner) An astonishing 15%, and most of
them were under the age of 25. Sexual harassment can raise the numbers on suicide statistics and
can affect the way that individual views life and sees people. It can even affect the victim's loved
ones if that

Abstract
I'm conducting a study on Sexual harassment in the workplace. Sexual harassment is possible in all
social and economic classes, ethnic groups, jobs and places in the community. Through this study I
hope to clarify the common misconception that sexual harassment is an isolated female problem.
Although the majority of the cases reported are in fact male on female offenses, sexual harassment is
not gender specific. Cases have been reported based on female on male harassment, as well as same
gender harassment. Sexual harassment is a growing epidemic that can be controlled though proper
enforcement of company polices and regulations.
Sexual Harassment in the Workplace
Sexual harassment in the work place can be defined, as a form of sexual discrimination that involves
unwanted sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and verbal or physical conduct sexual in
nature capable of creating a hostile work environment. The harasser can be the victim 's supervisor,
a supervisor in another area, a co–worker, or someone who is not an employee of the employer, such
as a client or customer. The reason for my study is to inform and educate the public on how to
prevent, address, and report these forms of unsolicited sexual advances.
The two types of sexual harassment that are legally recognized are:

Sexual Harassment And The Workplace
The case, Sexual Harassment or Just Being a Friendly Co–Worker, reveals several possible
problems in the Human Resources area. To deal with a sexual harassing incident, both the company
and the employees should fully understand and follow rules and policies. Within this case, there are
five significant problems that should be properly solved, in order to create a harmonious working
environment. First of all, the problem occurs because employees at Wheels do not fully obey the
sexual harassment policies that the company enforced. In the case, Jerrick, the employee who was
accused by Yvonne, was previously reported by another employee, Anne. However, at his first
investigation, he was already found that he "did not fully comprehend the harassment policy and
procedures... despite attending the training classes provided". After he was given instructions to
watch his behavior, he still committed similar actions shortly after he returned to work. Therefore,
Jerrick's lack of understanding upon the policy and regulations made him the harasser. Besides
Jerrick, the victims are not familiar with the policy as well. According to the case, there are eight
more female employees who were sexually harassed by Jerrick before Yvonne reported on him.
Nevertheless, none of the eight employees reached out to the chain of command and the Human
Resources department. The instructions that were given to Jerrick after his first investigation clearly
stated that he can "no longer ask any female

Essay on Sexual Harassment
In today's society we constantly hear or read about individuals that claim they were a victim of
sexual pressure. These instances can take place at work, school, the military and even at church. But
exactly what is sexual exploitation or unwanted sexual behavior? After looking at several definitions
for sexual abuse I came across the following definition that I feel will help all of us to better
understand what inappropriate sexual behavior is. Sexual harassment was defined by The Equal
Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) as unwelcome advances and requests for sexual
behavior or conditional requests such as a person's employment will continue if they perform these
acts. (Gale Group, 2003). This definition left me thinking and ... Show more content on

Please also keep in mind that a harasser can be male or female and can be of the same sex as the
victim. The harasser may not always know that they are being offensive but if the other person is
uncomfortable and has stated this to them then he or she should stop before legal action is brought
forth.
Some women may even prefer not to report any allegations of being pressured sexually for fear of
what might happen to them if they do. Although it is not lawful to retaliate against an individual for
exposing employment practices that discriminate many people would seek retaliatory efforts.
Therefore there are many women who feel it may be better for them to suffer in silence than to deal
with revengeful or vindictive tactics such as being denied promotions or being scorned by other
women who may think that the victim is pressing charges for attention. Because of the nature of
such unprofessional behavior the victim may find him or herself very alone and no one wants to go
through that especially after suffering through the harassment itself.
Being sexually abused can have similar effects like rape in which the victim falls prey to depression,
shame and guilt. Being depressed can lead to anxiety problems, an increase or decrease in weight as
well as a lack of self–confidence and self respect. They may experience the loss of trust in familiar
people and places. The victim can become withdrawn and if they are married the

Sexual Harassment At The Workplace
Part B
As seen in the case study, a court decision may be one way for any company to legally define what
constitutes sexual harassment in the workplace, but there are many ways to define sexual
harassment. Everyone has different views and tolerance levels towards sexual harassment. When a
case of sexual harassment occurs in a workplace, however, it comes down to how the courts define
sexual harassment. The Supreme Court defines sexual harassment to be unlawful in two ways. "The
first type involves sexual harassment that results in a tangible employment action;" this is referred to
as quid pro quo. For example, if an employee complies with the harasser's request, then she will get
a raise. This unlawful act is usually presented in the workplace by a person who has an upper hand,
such as a manager, to ensure that s/he will get what s/he wants. Employees are often victimized by
fear that they will not get promoted or that they will get fired. They also dread that if a complaint is
filed, it will not be handled correctly. "This instance of sexual harassment always involves another
violation of employee rights; [sic] wrongful termination." This would occur, for instance, when "a
supervisor . . . tells a subordinate that . . . she must be sexually cooperative with [him] or . . . she
will be fired, and who then indeed does fire the subordinate for not submitting" ("U.S. Supreme
Court Defines"). [schwinlaw.com]

Sexual Harassment Issues
Sexual harassment is an ongoing problem in our society and has been swept under the rug in most
sexual harassment cases in the workplace. The problem with sexual harassment, especially in the
workplace, is the fact that victims usually cannot escape the situation from happening more than
once. The victim is often in a position with their company that the victim cannot let authorities know
of the harassment because of financial obligation to their family and themselves through the
company. Sexual harassment is an issue that, is not only a major issue but an issue that needs to be
stopped. Sexual harassment in the workplace needs to be prevented from happening and we as a
society need to raise awareness for this issue. The sexual harassment epidemic in the workplace in
America is escalating quickly, but what exactly is sexual harassment? Sexual harassment is defined
as "unwanted sex–related behavior at work that is appraised by the recipient as offensive, exceeding
her resources, or threatening her well–being" (Barling). However, there is a difference between
sexual harassment in the workplace and workplace romance. Workplace romance is a risky game to
play in the workplace environment. Often in cases of sexual harassment, workplace romances have
taken a turn in the wrong direction and turn into more aggressive relationships. Sexual harassment
does not only happen to women but also to men. However, sexual harassment cases occur more with
women as the victim than men being

Sexual Harassment And The Workplace
Case 6–1 Not only is sexual harassment one of the worst possible things that can happen to an
individual on the job, but also to have a supervisor or manager to not stand up for you and help you
is just as terrible. Some employee's can become worried about mentioning to their supervisors about
possible sexual harassments for reasons such as, worrying about what other people will think, not
trusting their supervisor, worry about losing their job. When you are a victim of sexual harassment
there is always a chance it may happen again and by the same person. If you do not tell someone
you could become that victim again. Title VII forbids employers from retaliating against you for

When you put business before your employees, you can create problems that you may not even
think about. Wallner is probably one of the most unethical people I have heard of. If you were to pay
off an individual in certain workplaces at certain companies right now, there would be so many
lawsuits that we wouldn't be able to keep up. Even to mention to an employee that you would pay
them off can cause a lawsuit. If anyone were to ask me that question I would leave the company
because that sexual harassment will probably happen to me again, let alone my supervisor clearly
doesn't care about my safety. You can't buy off employee silence; it is unethical and simply wrong.
Not only is this company making a terrible name for itself, but also it is giving their employee's a
dangerous and careless work environment. The employer is liable if it knew or should have known
about the harassment, unless it took immediate and appropriate corrective action (Workplace
Fairness). Not only is Wallner putting his employee's at risk, but himself as well. It doesn't matter if
you have a top "rock star", it matters if you have an employee how knows how to respect their job
and their co–workers. Such situations should not be tolerated by anyone and the supervisor should
be held accountable to protect their employees.

Sexual Harassment Intervention
In order to propose an effective intervention aimed at increasing the number of female corrections
officers who self–report experiencing sexual harassment from other male officers, one must first
look at the strategies that already exist to help with this problem. It is also important to note that the
existing interventions try to reduce sexual harassment in the workplace, not increase the number of
reports made about the harassment. Additionally, a few strategies seem to exist for workplace sexual
harassment in general, but none is specific to sexual harassment in the corrections setting. However,
it is still important to address the existing interventions in order to make the new intervention as
effective as possible. The first strategy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is also the channel of the intervention. The psychoeducation group will serve as both an
educational group about sexual harassment and therapy and a support group for the victims.
Additionally, the groups will also allow the female officers to learn from one another and model
appropriate behavior in regards to sexual harassment reporting. Therefore, modeling would be
considered the method of the intervention. Further, the strategy of this intervention is for modeling
to occur in the psychoeducational group therapy sessions to motivate the female officers to report
their experiences of sexual harassment.
The sessions will be mandatory for the female officers that are identified as victims. Additionally,
they will last about two hours and will be conducted in the training room above the main gate
entrance and will meet once every other week for about eight sessions, for a total of about four
months. The group will not be offered to more than ten female officers at a time. However, multiple
groups may occur at the same time. The only people in the sessions will be the female officers who
were identified as victims, and one or two psychology staff members of the prison to direct the

Sexual harassment is something that is happening daily. Trying to cope with the emotional damage
can be a lot worse than the harassment itself. It can have an affect on your job, or personal life.
Employees who are harassed report lower levels of job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and
job performance. Employees experience higher levels of psychological distress and physical
problems than those who are not harassed. Victims of workplace sexual harassment experience a
range of ill effects, such as job dissatisfaction and absenteeism.
Victims also exhibit nervousness, anger and irritability, low self–esteem and elevated stress.
Ignoring sexual harassment is also relatively common.
Responses appear to vary depending on the severity ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are four types of support that are included in the interactive coping. One approach
recommends both pity and determined behaviors that attend to the victim's needs, such as helping
students deal with internal reactions, providing information, and assisting as students decide what to
do. A second approach indicates the use of strategies, such as providing information or advice. A
third approach supports the rights and concerns of accused perpetrators above all others, indicating
the need to ask pointed questions to prove students who make false complaints. Women rarely use
complaint procedures to help with coping of sexual harassment. They usually try to avoid the
perpetrator or talk to a friend and react with rejection and anxiety.
Women who are sexually harassed seek help from a friend or family member. Even though women
may have difficulty coping with sexual harassment, they might find themselves in a dangerous
situation because of the lack of support they get and a sense of separation.

Sexual Harassment in the Workplace
What cause sexual harassment in the workplace? Sexual harassment is defined as discrimination
towards sex. It is unwanted verbal and/or physical contact between two human beings, however, in
this case I would like to focus on the workplace (co–worker or supervisor).
Based on Civil Rights Act of 1991, there has been an increased amount of incentives for employer's
prohibition conducts of sexual harassment. How people perceive and evaluate sexual harassment has
also been independently studied (O'Connor et al., 2004; York, 1989; Wiener et al., 1997, 2004).
Although, scientists socially begun to question whether responses to sexual harassment claims may
actually be influenced by a prior workplace ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Demonstration Moral Reasoning One of the most common acts in the workplace is an issue with
sexual harassment. This type of behavior is insidious to tackle simply because there are victims that
are more than likely put in a position where they may be scared of the consequences that may follow
behind coming out about being harassed. With thoughts that it might damage their reputation.
Morally, sexual harassment does not give anyone the "right" to act in such manner. This bad
behavior and is frown upon. Yet, when fractionization lead to romance in the workplace all hell can
break loose especially if things go sour. In the workplace, there should be anti–francization policy
that covers all employer's. Employers are there to accomplish a duty and not get caught up with
issues such sexual harassment that can not only draw attention to the business, but also bring down
morale for all others. It is unethical behavior that has a role of moral intensity. Kant, (cited in
Hoffman & Frederick, 1995) argues that all mature persons have the capacity to reason, and these
rules can be applied to everyone. Though, Kant stresses the importance of acting on principle and
from a sense of duty (Shaw & Barry, 2000), typically an obligation (morally) to help guide the
behavior. However, the EEOC of the U.S. (Interactive

Sexual Harassment And The Workplace
Sexual harassment affects the way we work, impacts the way we conduct ourselves in the place of
business. Sexual harassment comes in many shapes and forms, and has lingering effects. While only
being noticed in the workplace, sexual harassment occurs in every type of job. Many noted cases
have influenced the workforce; and the way we operate together. Policies to deter this action have
failed in–order to completely dissolve such actions. Sexual harassment occurs in every work
environment, influences employees, and the work environment, and needs to have policies that are
more stringent. The lingering effect of sexual harassment can have a negative impact for many
years. The presence of sexual harassment has become more and more prevalent due to the impact of
women joining the workforce. Women are expanding into every aspect of the workforce and are no
longer only in the administrative, and hospitality areas.
The Meaning of Sexual Harassment
Sexual harassment is an unwelcomed act, which comes in many forms. A physical form of sexual
harassment is touching a man or women anywhere on their person without their expressed
permission. A non–physical form may consist of looking at a person in a sexual nature sort of staring
at them from head to toe or in areas of sexual nature. A verbal form is explaining or referring to a
sexual situation in which they would place themselves in with another person. A non–verbal form

Sexual Harassment And Social Media
Sexual harassment have become a major concern in places of work, and academic institutions.
Throughout the years the rise of social media virtual spaces have become a place where men and
women can become victimized. With the intersection of sexual harassment and social media people
have experience sexual harassment online on many social media's.
The subject of sexual harassment has not been one that haven't been noticed by people, though the
thought of someone causing trouble online seems something of the norm among us. That does not
mean we are concerned of the trouble in media, especially when anything can happen on one or

problem of it following them on places where they regular visit online in order to do work or just to
take a break and relax from stress.
Sexual harassment online is when a person sends unwanted inappropriate image, message or email.
It is when a person feels uncomfortable or feel like that they may be in danger because of what is

Sexual harassment in the workplace is a very serious problem that must be dealt with effectively.
Sexual harassment is defined as a form of sex discrimination, which is a violation of Title VII of the

other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature, especially when submission to this conduct is
made a term or condition of one's employment (Sexual Harassment). However, sexual harassment is
not limited to sexual advances. It also includes the creation of a intimidating, hostile, or offensive

Today, courts will more likely find an illegal hostile environment present when the workplace
includes sexual propositions, pornography, extremely vulgar language, sexual touching, degrading
comments, or embarrassing questions or jokes. There are many examples of court cases which back
this up.

As Angel Kwolek–Folland said, "Women's presence in the office work force challenged the
Victorian ideal of separate public and private worlds for men and women" (Covey). In all our
country's attempts to eradicate sexual harassment it is still an issue people face every day. Sexual
harassment is more than just inappropriate touching it is also verbal harassment and even body
language. The textbook definition of sexual harassment as stated by the Equal Employment
Opportunity Commission is "unwanted sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal
or physical harassment of a sexual nature" (Wakeman). While many think that the lines of what is
sexual harassment and what is not are blurred they are not. Sexual harassment is behavior that is "so
frequent or severe that is creates a hostile work environment" (Wakeman). Even though some
common arguments maybe that the definition od sexual harassment is unclear or that without it the
workplace would be dull, sexual harassment is not something to be ignored or belittled and it is still
a big problem that people face in their workplace. Ninety percent of people who are sexually
harassed are women and not only does sexual harassment affect their work life it also affects their

lose self–esteem, interfere with judgement, concentration, and many lose sleep and all of this in turn
affects performance at work ("Sexual Harassment").

Women are treated behind the men, as if they are just a fill–in for the men. The men at Fox News are
given the benefit of the doubt, while the women are treated poorly in comparison. The men do not
come out as often as the women when they are getting sexually harassed. Both genders get sexually
harassed, it is the women that are more likely to come out and say that they are being victimized
over the men. The Fox executives are aware of the sexual harassment and they do nothing about it
because they don't want to put a bad name on the network. At the end of the day, women are worth
more than an image for a brand that reports news. Fox executives will do nothing unless women like

Sex Harassment And Sexual Harassment
CONSIDER the case of a male supervisor who, in the midst of a conversation with a female
employee about an assignment, asked her out of the blue, "Are you wearing panties?" and then
blithely continued the conversation seemingly pleased that he had left her rattled.
Years later, the woman says she is still outraged by the incident, though she said nothing at the time.
One of a flood of tales that have surfaced in the wake of Anita F. Hill 's accusations of sexual
harassment in hearings on Clarence Thomas 's Supreme Court nomination, the story underscores a
picture that is emerging from extensive research on such harassment: it has less to do with sex than
with power. It is a way to keep women in their place; through harassment men devalue a woman 's
role in the work place by calling attention to her sexuality.
"Sexual harassment is a subtle rape, and rape is more about fear than sex," said Dr. John Gottman, a
psychologist at the University of Washington. "Harassment is a way for a man to make a woman
vulnerable."
While sexual harassment may on first glance be taken as simple social ineptness or as an awkward
expression of romantic attaction, researchers say that view is wrong and pernicious because it can
lead women who suffer harassment to blame themselves, believing that something in their dress or
behavior might have brought the unwanted attention.
In fact, only about 25 percent of cases of sexual harassment are botched seductions, in which the

Sexual Harassment In Australia
Introduction
Sexual harassment still remains a serious problem in workplaces around Australia and can affect
anyone no matter their age or gender. There are many rules and laws in place around Australia to
prevent this issue but there are still many cases every year, it is the one of the most common types of
complaints received by the Australian Human Rights Commission under the Sex Discrimination
Act.
It affects 1 in 4 women, and 1 in 6 men in the workplace; this makes the number of people that have
been sexually harassed very large. Sexual harassment is against the law and some types can be a
criminal offence. A single incident is enough to establish sexual harassment; it does not have to be
repeated.

Sexual harassment in the workplace can happen to anyone no matter their age or gender, this
impacts my co–workers and I as employees. This issue can happen to me by anyone around my
workplace, which it a bit scary, it is also frightening to know how often sexual harassment occurs
and how it does not get reported as often as it should. It may not affect me in my current job but it

Sexual Harassment In Hollywood
At the SAG awards on Sunday, many celebrities spoke out and showed support for the anti–sexual
harassment movement called "Time's up" in Hollywood. Many powerful and famous women in
Hollywood supported the movement and used their awards speech to address sexual harassment by
sharing their own personal stories. Other stars gave speeches to express how happy they are that
people are standing with them against sexual harassment. There is a lot of conversation happening
now in Hollywood about the movement, and many people agree with the movement's purpose of
ending sexual harassment. While a lot of men agree with the movement, others like Constance Wu,
star from "Fresh Off the Boat," said the movement made him very uncomfortable. Many women say
they don't like how they are treated as being inferior to men, and they are going to speak out against

Prior to the movement, you rarely heard about sexual harassment. But now since women are
speaking out against it, it is all over the news and social media, and so you hear about it more often.
Many women have been afraid to speak out and share their story, but because of this movement
more and more people are speaking out. This movement might change the world forever! Women
being treated differently isn't anything new though, look back at the women's suffrage movement.
The women's suffrage movement was when women were trying to get the right to vote. All white
men in the 1820's and '30s could vote and all men, no matter their race or how much land they
owned could vote in 1865. In 1848, the first meeting for the fight for women's suffrage took place in
Seneca Falls, New York. The fight for women's suffrage took nearly 100 years for women to win the
right to vote. The 19th amendment to the US Constitution, which gave women the right to vote was
finally passed in

Gender Harassment And Sexual Harassment Essay
Bennett–Alexander & Hartman (2015) mentions that sexual harassment is based on gender and does
not "Involve sex, requests for sexual activity, comments, or anything similar" (Bennett–Alexander &
Hartman, 2015, p. 423). The non–sex requirement is the reason that the term gender in sexual
harassment is discussed meaning whether if the individual is male or female that is filing a sexual
harassment claim. Although, Title VII of the Civil Rights of 1964 mentions that individuals should
not be discriminated on the basis of gender, sex, ethnicity, race, religion, etc it does not specify an
individual's sexual orientation. This writer will be discussing a case where a male employee files a
sexual harassment claim against the employer as the male employee identifies as being gay. He also
is filing discrimination on the basis of his gender and alleges retaliation as he was terminated after
he had complained about his female coworker. Apparently, the male employee alleged that a female
employee while at a dinner and concert after work hours grabbed his privates. It is important to note
that the male employee's performance prior to the incident was declining and was counseled on
several occasions by his employer about his declining production. Furthermore, this writer will be
discussing whether if the facts could result in liability to the employer for sexual harassment or
gender discrimination. Also, this writer will be integrating and referring to various sources and cases

Sexual Harassment Definition
Summer of 2012. I was walking down the street in an old shirt and shorts with my mom, aunt, and
younger cousin when a car filled with a group of twenty–something–year–olds appeared. When
passing my family, the car erupted in hoots and hollers', a known antic of catcalling. At the time, I
was twelve years old. Similarly, I was walking into a restaurant when a man made a suggestive
passing. As my mother glared at him for his remark he repeated himself, this time intending the
sexist slur for her. I was wearing an oversized sweater and leggings. Street harassment, more
commonly known as catcalling, is a daily occurrence in the life of a woman. It is an objectifying and
degrading way to call attention to a woman. A woman's appearance or clothing ... Show more

I did that when explaining my own experiences. Why? When hearing stories about sexual
harassment, people assume that the victim was, in some form, "initiating" catcalling or was "asking

up recently; women would secretly record themselves walking down the street while being catcalled
(Hess). The woman in the video was wearing a black t–shirt and jeans. While walking down the
street in one video men called out commands such as "You should smile more," to unsolicited
remarks about the subject's body such as "Sexy!" (Hess). The relentlessness of catcallers does not

Sexual Harassment Policy
A workplace sexual harassment policy is a written policy to provide employees as well as managers,
with a workplace that is free from sexual harassment. It is designed to prevent the recurrence of
sexual harassment and to provide information on what sexual harassment is. The policy gives the
employees and victims the information needed to know how to file a claim. It also gives the
perpetrator information and understanding of just how serious sexual harassment in the workplace is
and what the consequences of engaging in sexual harassment are (LP5 handout – Developing the

It is a serious offence and it is our job as human relations professionals to remain impartial and
follow the proper steps to investigate the incident or better yet prevent it from happening in the first
place. Preventing sexual harassment can be done by bringing the subject of sexual harassment to
light and while doing so, express harsh disapproval of it. Additionally they should develop
applicable sanctions and notifying employees that they have the right to raise the issue of
harassment and how to educate the employees on the issue of harassment under Title VII.
Furthermore, the managers and supervisors should always be aware of the work environment and
the possible difficulties of sexual harassment in their company. They must also lead by example by

Sexual Harassment In The Crucible
At the moment, Hollywood actors are falling left and right. After decades of silence, victims of
sexual harassment have gained the courage to confront their harassers and accuse them. This
movement all began with actresses Ashley Judd and Rose McGowan, who accused the well known
Hollywood mogul, Harvey Weinstein, of sexual harassment from two decades ago in a detailed
timeline in the New York Times article, Harvey Weinstein Paid off Sexual Harassment Accusers for
Decades written by Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey. Following this accusation, several others began
to make sexaul harassment accusations against other popular actors. This movement quickly gained
momentum, however others have tried to discredit the accusers and are calling this a modern day

Sexual Harassment in the Workplace
There are federal laws put in position to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace. Most
employees sometimes don't even realize what sexual harassment is are when they are committing
this violation. On the flip side an employee may not realized when they are being sexually harassed
and when is the appropriate time to speak up. Education on sexual harassment has increased within
the workplace as cases are more public and fines are getting steeper.

employer and the employee. I will back up theses affects by laws that are set in place to protect the
employee and hold the employer responsible. I will give an analysis on recent litigation involving
sexual harassment in the workplace. In my conclusion I will give a recommendation on how to

Sexual harassment is so ordinary in the workforce that frequently we fail to even recognize
harassing behavior as immoral. This is because so many of us––women and men alike––have
become desensitized to offensive behaviors. Sexual harassment in any form is unacceptable
behavior and should not be tolerated by anyone. It undermines our ability to study, to work, and to
feel like effective, empowered people in the world.
The U.S Equal Employment Opportunity Commission describes sexual harassment as a form of

Over the last decade the number of grievance filed with EEOC has gradually decreased. For
example, in 1997 approximately 16,000 complaints of sexual harassment were filed. Last year, the
number of complaints dropped to 11,717 which 16.4% of charges were filed by men (Sexual

conversely the quantity of complaints filed by men is ever–increasing, along with increasing
numbers of men filing against female supervisors. In 2007, 16% of complaints filed with the EEOC

Men are increasingly claiming they're victims of sexual harassment and sexual harassment of men
does occur. The first ever court case involving sexual harassment of a man in the workplace was in
1995. The EEOC sued Domino Pizza after a female supervisor of a male store manager sexually

Ingrid Reeves, worked at a company where she alleged that she was subjected to hearing her male

In my opinion, an employer's liability for sexual harassment depends on the harasser's position in
the company or workplace, and the kind of sexual harassment being alleged. So, even if you can
prove that you experienced sexual harassment, it is possible that your employer may not be liable.
However, an employer has additional responsibility to hold other co–workers or supervisors liable

To avoid sexual harassment's expensive penalty and diminish its occurrence, employers need to
recognize and understand both the reason for the harassment and the precise form of power being
abused (UMC, 2007).
According to Goodman (1991), power in sexual harassment has been viewed differently by men and
women. The literature on sexual harassment generally characterizes it as an abuse of either role or
sexual power. From the cases Goodman (1991) mentions in her report, it can be noted that for men,
power comes from official authority, and they view sexual harassers as principally managers and
supervisors. Men acknowledged that co–workers could sexually harass one another, but co–worker
harassment was mainly seen as a mix–up (UMC, 2007). However, women often distinguish all
members of an organization as possible harassers, viewing it can be initiated by any person who is
perceived as having power.
However, it has been claimed that sexual harassment regulations are based on the point of view of
the victim, nearly always a woman, and based almost completely on the feelings of the victim.
Many men have argued that, it is almost impracticable to understand each other's feelings, and many
suits filed for sexual harassment supposed as misunderstandings between the two parties (Goodman,

Buchannan's termination is lawful because her history is a liability to the school. Let's try to forget

A Feminist Definition Of Sexual Harassment
Sexual harassment is a delicate yet extremely controversial topic in the workplace and every day
life. Many women fall victim to sexual harassment yet fail to receive proper justice due to either
being unaware they were sexually harassed or that the burden of proof is unfairly put on them.
Superson's article, " A Feminist Definition of Sexual Harassment" was written to inform people that
sexual harassment that is directed at an individual, is actually an attack against all woman as a
group. She believes that "even though the law is changing to the benefit of victims of sexual

concerns. The first issue being that because more behavior would be considered sexual harassment,
it would bring an impossible numbers of claims against offenders. This being true, more people
could be hired on to handle the growing number of claims. If an objective definition is taken
seriously in legal matters than, perpetrators will quickly discover that their actions will have serious
consequences, and will minimize if not stop their degrading behavior. Another issue with her
definition that she discusses is that, interpretation is still used when determining if behavior
constitutes as sexual harassment. The interpretation necessary when using an objective definition,
includes assessing the offenders behavior and whether or not it to be considered sexual harassment
(did it occurr because woman are the inferior group). This interpretation has a lot less wiggle room
than when using a subjective definition, which relies on the victims actions to determine whether
something is considered sexual harassment. And we know people react to situations

Who can sue?
Anyone who is offended by a sexually harassing environment may theoretically sue. However, that
employee's offense must be reasonable. An extremely sensitive person might not be able to maintain
a claim, because her feelings of having been offended were not reasonable.
The reasonableness is evaluated by a standard that is the same as a person in the victim's
circumstances. For example, what a reasonable woman might think is a hostile environment is not
necessarily the same as what a man might think is a hostile environment. If it's a woman who was
harassed, it's the woman's point of view that counts.

the article explained that in the last two years sexual harassment in the workplace had actually
increased. It also explains the difference between a minor incident that may involve an inappropriate

articles have stated "most of the time" sexual harassment is based upon leadership and masculinity,
but Cates and Machin state there is no reason behind it. According to the article, there are many
types of sexual harassment: verbal/written, physical, nonverbal (inappropriate staring),
severe/pervasive (attempted rape). These are split, according to the EEOC (Equal Employment
Opportunity Commission) into two factions, quid pro quo and hostile. The consequences of these
actions need to be enforced by not only termination, but possible convictions, as well.

Sexual Harassment in the Workplace

1. Quid Pro Quo Sexual Harassment

Sexual Harassment And Gender Harassment

  • 1. Sexual Harassment And Gender Harassment 1. Introduction It is perhaps an exaggeration to recommend that no hypothetical work has been done around the area of Sexual Harassment, as the primary systematic attempt to outline theoretical space of Sexual Harassment and build up a complete classification system had started in the year 1980 (Fitzgerald et al. 2010). Sexual Harassment is defined as the unprompted male conduct that asserts a women's sex role over her function as employee or intimidation of a sexual nature or the inappropriate promises of rewards in return for sexual favors (Fitzgerald 1990). In most of the modern cultures, it is very illegal and illegitimate to intimidate a person because of person's sex. Sexual harassment is an issue which has been prevailing in the current workplace and is a major attribute that prompts the effectiveness of an organization as it plays a main role in the happiness of the employees which in turn results in goals of overall company to be achieved (Reese et al. 2004). Employers should make this a top priority and see that it is not effecting the performance of employees to achieve the goals of the organization (Collier 1995). Information had been gathered through a survey which included females from two diverse cultures who worked in a public–sector company. The results showed that inappropriate behavior and sexual harassment were co–related and harassment based on gender was a bridge amongst the two behaviors. In addition, these practices tend to happen again and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Causes And Effects Of Sexual Harassment Everyone thinks that Sexual Harassment is infrequent, but speaking from experience it can happen at anytime , any day , and any age. I was sexually harassed at the age of 11, and I was so terrified even now it makes my skin crawl. I wish I would have reported it or spoke up, but instead I lived with the self–condemnation , shame, and thoughts in my head. Although people do not think much of Sexual Harassment it occurs too often, and its effects may last a lifetime on all victims whether female, male, teen, child, adult, or elder. The effects can range from depression to suicide; however, help is available for coping. First of all Suicide yes, suicideit's a very touchy subject for most people, but sexual Harassment can play a role in it. Suicide is a major effect and the most common effect of sexual harassment victims. A study found that 23 percent of students had experienced at least one incident of unwanted sexual touching, sexual threats or remarks, or indecent exposure in the past six months. Of women who had experienced frequent, unwanted sexual touching, 15 percent said they had made suicide attempts "often" in the past six months, compared with 2 percent of students that had not experienced sexual harassment.(Rettner) An astonishing 15%, and most of them were under the age of 25. Sexual harassment can raise the numbers on suicide statistics and can affect the way that individual views life and sees people. It can even affect the victim's loved ones if that ... • 5. Sexual Harassment At The Workplace Sexual Harassment in the Workplace Eva L. Mendez–Zacher MG260, Business Law I 28 September 2014 Dr. Anita Whitby Abstract I'm conducting a study on Sexual harassment in the workplace. Sexual harassment is possible in all social and economic classes, ethnic groups, jobs and places in the community. Through this study I hope to clarify the common misconception that sexual harassment is an isolated female problem. Although the majority of the cases reported are in fact male on female offenses, sexual harassment is not gender specific. Cases have been reported based on female on male harassment, as well as same gender harassment. Sexual harassment is a growing epidemic that can be controlled though proper enforcement of company polices and regulations. Sexual Harassment in the Workplace Sexual harassment in the work place can be defined, as a form of sexual discrimination that involves unwanted sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and verbal or physical conduct sexual in nature capable of creating a hostile work environment. The harasser can be the victim 's supervisor, a supervisor in another area, a co–worker, or someone who is not an employee of the employer, such as a client or customer. The reason for my study is to inform and educate the public on how to prevent, address, and report these forms of unsolicited sexual advances. The two types of sexual harassment that are legally recognized are: 1. Quid Pro Quo Sexual Harassment ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Sexual Harassment And The Workplace The case, Sexual Harassment or Just Being a Friendly Co–Worker, reveals several possible problems in the Human Resources area. To deal with a sexual harassing incident, both the company and the employees should fully understand and follow rules and policies. Within this case, there are five significant problems that should be properly solved, in order to create a harmonious working environment. First of all, the problem occurs because employees at Wheels do not fully obey the sexual harassment policies that the company enforced. In the case, Jerrick, the employee who was accused by Yvonne, was previously reported by another employee, Anne. However, at his first investigation, he was already found that he "did not fully comprehend the harassment policy and procedures... despite attending the training classes provided". After he was given instructions to watch his behavior, he still committed similar actions shortly after he returned to work. Therefore, Jerrick's lack of understanding upon the policy and regulations made him the harasser. Besides Jerrick, the victims are not familiar with the policy as well. According to the case, there are eight more female employees who were sexually harassed by Jerrick before Yvonne reported on him. Nevertheless, none of the eight employees reached out to the chain of command and the Human Resources department. The instructions that were given to Jerrick after his first investigation clearly stated that he can "no longer ask any female ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Essay on Sexual Harassment In today's society we constantly hear or read about individuals that claim they were a victim of sexual pressure. These instances can take place at work, school, the military and even at church. But exactly what is sexual exploitation or unwanted sexual behavior? After looking at several definitions for sexual abuse I came across the following definition that I feel will help all of us to better understand what inappropriate sexual behavior is. Sexual harassment was defined by The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) as unwelcome advances and requests for sexual behavior or conditional requests such as a person's employment will continue if they perform these acts. (Gale Group, 2003). This definition left me thinking and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Please also keep in mind that a harasser can be male or female and can be of the same sex as the victim. The harasser may not always know that they are being offensive but if the other person is uncomfortable and has stated this to them then he or she should stop before legal action is brought forth. Some women may even prefer not to report any allegations of being pressured sexually for fear of what might happen to them if they do. Although it is not lawful to retaliate against an individual for exposing employment practices that discriminate many people would seek retaliatory efforts. Therefore there are many women who feel it may be better for them to suffer in silence than to deal with revengeful or vindictive tactics such as being denied promotions or being scorned by other women who may think that the victim is pressing charges for attention. Because of the nature of such unprofessional behavior the victim may find him or herself very alone and no one wants to go through that especially after suffering through the harassment itself. Being sexually abused can have similar effects like rape in which the victim falls prey to depression, shame and guilt. Being depressed can lead to anxiety problems, an increase or decrease in weight as well as a lack of self–confidence and self respect. They may experience the loss of trust in familiar people and places. The victim can become withdrawn and if they are married the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Sexual Harassment At The Workplace Part B As seen in the case study, a court decision may be one way for any company to legally define what constitutes sexual harassment in the workplace, but there are many ways to define sexual harassment. Everyone has different views and tolerance levels towards sexual harassment. When a case of sexual harassment occurs in a workplace, however, it comes down to how the courts define sexual harassment. The Supreme Court defines sexual harassment to be unlawful in two ways. "The first type involves sexual harassment that results in a tangible employment action;" this is referred to as quid pro quo. For example, if an employee complies with the harasser's request, then she will get a raise. This unlawful act is usually presented in the workplace by a person who has an upper hand, such as a manager, to ensure that s/he will get what s/he wants. Employees are often victimized by fear that they will not get promoted or that they will get fired. They also dread that if a complaint is filed, it will not be handled correctly. "This instance of sexual harassment always involves another violation of employee rights; [sic] wrongful termination." This would occur, for instance, when "a supervisor . . . tells a subordinate that . . . she must be sexually cooperative with [him] or . . . she will be fired, and who then indeed does fire the subordinate for not submitting" ("U.S. Supreme Court Defines"). • 13. Sexual Harassment Issues Sexual harassment is an ongoing problem in our society and has been swept under the rug in most sexual harassment cases in the workplace. The problem with sexual harassment, especially in the workplace, is the fact that victims usually cannot escape the situation from happening more than once. The victim is often in a position with their company that the victim cannot let authorities know of the harassment because of financial obligation to their family and themselves through the company. Sexual harassment is an issue that, is not only a major issue but an issue that needs to be stopped. Sexual harassment in the workplace needs to be prevented from happening and we as a society need to raise awareness for this issue. The sexual harassment epidemic in the workplace in America is escalating quickly, but what exactly is sexual harassment? Sexual harassment is defined as "unwanted sex–related behavior at work that is appraised by the recipient as offensive, exceeding her resources, or threatening her well–being" (Barling). However, there is a difference between sexual harassment in the workplace and workplace romance. Workplace romance is a risky game to play in the workplace environment. Often in cases of sexual harassment, workplace romances have taken a turn in the wrong direction and turn into more aggressive relationships. Sexual harassment does not only happen to women but also to men. However, sexual harassment cases occur more with women as the victim than men being ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Sexual Harassment And The Workplace Case 6–1 Not only is sexual harassment one of the worst possible things that can happen to an individual on the job, but also to have a supervisor or manager to not stand up for you and help you is just as terrible. Some employee's can become worried about mentioning to their supervisors about possible sexual harassments for reasons such as, worrying about what other people will think, not trusting their supervisor, worry about losing their job. When you are a victim of sexual harassment there is always a chance it may happen again and by the same person. If you do not tell someone you could become that victim again. When you put business before your employees, you can create problems that you may not even think about. Wallner is probably one of the most unethical people I have heard of. If you were to pay off an individual in certain workplaces at certain companies right now, there would be so many lawsuits that we wouldn't be able to keep up. Even to mention to an employee that you would pay them off can cause a lawsuit. If anyone were to ask me that question I would leave the company because that sexual harassment will probably happen to me again, let alone my supervisor clearly doesn't care about my safety. You can't buy off employee silence; it is unethical and simply wrong. Not only is this company making a terrible name for itself, but also it is giving their employee's a dangerous and careless work environment. The employer is liable if it knew or should have known about the harassment, unless it took immediate and appropriate corrective action (Workplace Fairness). Not only is Wallner putting his employee's at risk, but himself as well. It doesn't matter if you have a top "rock star", it matters if you have an employee how knows how to respect their job and their co–workers. Such situations should not be tolerated by anyone and the supervisor should be held accountable to protect their employees. Workplace Fairness. (2016). Sexual harassment – legal standards. • 17. Sexual Harassment Intervention In order to propose an effective intervention aimed at increasing the number of female corrections officers who self–report experiencing sexual harassment from other male officers, one must first look at the strategies that already exist to help with this problem. It is also important to note that the existing interventions try to reduce sexual harassment in the workplace, not increase the number of reports made about the harassment. Additionally, a few strategies seem to exist for workplace sexual harassment in general, but none is specific to sexual harassment in the corrections setting. However, it is still important to address the existing interventions in order to make the new intervention as effective as possible. The first strategy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is also the channel of the intervention. The psychoeducation group will serve as both an educational group about sexual harassment and therapy and a support group for the victims. Additionally, the groups will also allow the female officers to learn from one another and model appropriate behavior in regards to sexual harassment reporting. Therefore, modeling would be considered the method of the intervention. Further, the strategy of this intervention is for modeling to occur in the psychoeducational group therapy sessions to motivate the female officers to report their experiences of sexual harassment. The sessions will be mandatory for the female officers that are identified as victims. Additionally, they will last about two hours and will be conducted in the training room above the main gate entrance and will meet once every other week for about eight sessions, for a total of about four months. The group will not be offered to more than ten female officers at a time. However, multiple groups may occur at the same time. It can have an affect on your job, or personal life. Employees who are harassed report lower levels of job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and job performance. Employees experience higher levels of psychological distress and physical problems than those who are not harassed. Victims of workplace sexual harassment experience a range of ill effects, such as job dissatisfaction and absenteeism. Victims also exhibit nervousness, anger and irritability, low self–esteem and elevated stress. Ignoring sexual harassment is also relatively common. One approach recommends both pity and determined behaviors that attend to the victim's needs, such as helping students deal with internal reactions, providing information, and assisting as students decide what to do. A second approach indicates the use of strategies, such as providing information or advice. A third approach supports the rights and concerns of accused perpetrators above all others, indicating the need to ask pointed questions to prove students who make false complaints. Women rarely use complaint procedures to help with coping of sexual harassment. They usually try to avoid the perpetrator or talk to a friend and react with rejection and anxiety. Women who are sexually harassed seek help from a friend or family member. Even though women may have difficulty coping with sexual harassment, they might find themselves in a dangerous situation because of the lack of support they get and a sense of separation. • 21. Sexual Harassment At The Workplace Sexual Harassment in the Workplace What cause sexual harassment in the workplace? Sexual harassment is defined as discrimination towards sex. It is unwanted verbal and/or physical contact between two human beings, however, in this case I would like to focus on the workplace (co–worker or supervisor). Based on Civil Rights Act of 1991, there has been an increased amount of incentives for employer's prohibition conducts of sexual harassment. How people perceive and evaluate sexual harassment has also been independently studied (O'Connor et al., 2004; York, 1989; Wiener et al., 1997, 2004). Although, scientists socially begun to question whether responses to sexual harassment claims may actually be influenced by a prior workplace ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Demonstration Moral Reasoning One of the most common acts in the workplace is an issue with sexual harassment. This type of behavior is insidious to tackle simply because there are victims that are more than likely put in a position where they may be scared of the consequences that may follow behind coming out about being harassed. With thoughts that it might damage their reputation. Morally, sexual harassment does not give anyone the "right" to act in such manner. This bad behavior and is frown upon. Yet, when fractionization lead to romance in the workplace all hell can break loose especially if things go sour. In the workplace, there should be anti–francization policy that covers all employer's. Employers are there to accomplish a duty and not get caught up with issues such sexual harassment that can not only draw attention to the business, but also bring down morale for all others. It is unethical behavior that has a role of moral intensity. Kant, (cited in Hoffman & Frederick, 1995) argues that all mature persons have the capacity to reason, and these rules can be applied to everyone. Sexual Harassment And The Workplace As Angel Kwolek–Folland said, "Women's presence in the office work force challenged the Victorian ideal of separate public and private worlds for men and women" (Covey). In all our country's attempts to eradicate sexual harassment it is still an issue people face every day. Sexual harassment is more than just inappropriate touching it is also verbal harassment and even body language. The textbook definition of sexual harassment as stated by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is "unwanted sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical harassment of a sexual nature" (Wakeman). While many think that the lines of what is sexual harassment and what is not are blurred they are not. Sexual harassment is behavior that is "so frequent or severe that is creates a hostile work environment" (Wakeman). Even though some common arguments maybe that the definition od sexual harassment is unclear or that without it the workplace would be dull, sexual harassment is not something to be ignored or belittled and it is still a big problem that people face in their workplace. Sex Harassment And Sexual Harassment CONSIDER the case of a male supervisor who, in the midst of a conversation with a female employee about an assignment, asked her out of the blue, "Are you wearing panties?" and then blithely continued the conversation seemingly pleased that he had left her rattled. Years later, the woman says she is still outraged by the incident, though she said nothing at the time. One of a flood of tales that have surfaced in the wake of Anita F. Hill 's accusations of sexual harassment in hearings on Clarence Thomas 's Supreme Court nomination, the story underscores a picture that is emerging from extensive research on such harassment: it has less to do with sex than with power. It is a way to keep women in their place; through harassment men devalue a woman 's role in the work place by calling attention to her sexuality. "Sexual harassment is a subtle rape, and rape is more about fear than sex," said Dr. John Gottman, a psychologist at the University of Washington. "Harassment is a way for a man to make a woman vulnerable." While sexual harassment may on first glance be taken as simple social ineptness or as an awkward expression of romantic attaction, researchers say that view is wrong and pernicious because it can lead women who suffer harassment to blame themselves, believing that something in their dress or behavior might have brought the unwanted attention. The literature on sexual harassment generally characterizes it as an abuse of either role or sexual power. From the cases Goodman (1991) mentions in her report, it can be noted that for men, power comes from official authority, and they view sexual harassers as principally managers and supervisors. Men acknowledged that co–workers could sexually harass one another, but co–worker harassment was mainly seen as a mix–up (UMC, 2007). Additionally, she was asked not to return to more than one elementary school in the Baton Rouge area within the last three years because of her inappropriate behavior" (Kingkade). Buchannan's termination is lawful because her history is a liability to the school. Let's try to forget for a second that it was the professor's former students who took issue with her jokes that prompted the investigation, which led to her termination from the school. Instead, imagine what could potentially happen to the university if a future student is personably disturbed by Buchannan's inappropriate jokes, and, thus, sues the school for allowing the former professor to teach despite knowing the professor's ... Many women fall victim to sexual harassment yet fail to receive proper justice due to either being unaware they were sexually harassed or that the burden of proof is unfairly put on them. Superson's article, " A Feminist Definition of Sexual Harassment" was written to inform people that sexual harassment that is directed at an individual, is actually an attack against all woman as a group. She believes that "even though the law is changing to the benefit of victims of sexual harassment, the fact that sexual harassment it still so pervasive shows that there is too much tolerance of it" (150). In her opinion the common subjective definition of sexual ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These issues are minor, and the pros of ending sexual harassment certainly outweigh the few minor concerns. The first issue being that because more behavior would be considered sexual harassment, it would bring an impossible numbers of claims against offenders. This being true, more people could be hired on to handle the growing number of claims. If an objective definition is taken seriously in legal matters than, perpetrators will quickly discover that their actions will have serious consequences, and will minimize if not stop their degrading behavior. Another issue with her definition that she discusses is that, interpretation is still used when determining if behavior constitutes as sexual harassment. The interpretation necessary when using an objective definition, includes assessing the offenders behavior and whether or not it to be considered sexual harassment (did it occurr because woman are the inferior group). This interpretation has a lot less wiggle room than when using a subjective definition, which relies on the victims actions to determine whether something is considered sexual harassment. And we know people react to situations ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The critical factor is the unwelcomeness of the behaviour, thereby making the impact of such actions on the recipient more relevant rather than intent of the perpetrator. According to India's constitution, sexual harassment infringes the fundamental right of a woman to gender equality under Article 14 of the Constitution of India and her right to life and live with dignity under Article 21 of the ... Sexual harassment in the workplace can be between people of the same sex. Sexual harassment in the workplace can be a woman harassing a man. Who can sue? Anyone who is offended by a sexually harassing environment may theoretically sue. However, that employee's offense must be reasonable. An extremely sensitive person might not be able to maintain a claim, because her feelings of having been offended were not reasonable. The reasonableness is evaluated by a standard that is the same as a person in the victim's circumstances. For example, what a reasonable woman might think is a hostile environment is not necessarily the same as what a man might think is a hostile environment. If it's a woman who was harassed, it's the woman's point of view that counts. Workplace sexual harassment is a serious problem in the United States, and the dimensions of the problem continue to expand and thus become a nightmare for Human Resource managers. The total award in this class–action suit was $34 million, nearly $100,000 for each plaintiff. Journal of Global Business Management, 8(1), 133–138. Unwanted sexual advances are inappropriate whether or not an individual is at work. This article speaks to the minds of people who have been sexually harassed at work in the 2000s. When written, the article explained that in the last two years sexual harassment in the workplace had actually increased. It also explains the difference between a minor incident that may involve an inappropriate comment and many inappropriate comments that may begin affecting workmanship. Previous articles have stated "most of the time" sexual harassment is based upon leadership and masculinity, but Cates and Machin state there is no reason behind it.
