Editor's Notes
Teachers and specialists can also check students’ understanding using the Metta website tools. When teachers upload a lesson they can also embed questions to monitor the students’ progress. Polls and quizzes can also be placed in the lecture for improved student participation and interaction. The tools also allow the teacher to read the data gleaned from the polls and quizzes in a user-friendly display. This involves students in a fun way and keeps them interested. Quizzes that are embedded also saves time as students don’t need to get out paper, sharpen a pencil and find an eraser that has been lost in their desk for ages. 3 words, FAST, EFFECTIVE & FUN!!

It’s funny that kids as young as two years of age seem to be more technologically savvy than me. I can put together a coherent sentence, but I am unable to mute a group text. That one always stumps me. We might be waking up to a new world that confuses some of us, but the ever presence of technology is not planning to stop, Students are chomping at the bit to learn new formats and use them as a vehicle for applying newly learned skills and concepts. As educators we can get swept up in wanting to live in the past, but we are summoned by future students to progress forward and light the way. Students can and will use these tools to prove their understanding, create presentations, and demonstrate their knowledge. They are ready. We have to get ready by learning and applying so that we can show them how. Once we show them how we enable them to build upon their knowledge and reach their goals!

Schools have fast tracked to the digital age and have people with the designated job of keeping up with websites ( not the Kardashians) They also create share point sites for faculty and staff so that everyone is up to date with the happenings of the school. The online phenomena also prompted many teachers to create a website and post information about themselves and expectations of the classroom. Some teachers have attached their sites to the school’s website. I am guilty of creating a website to check off the box that it’s complete, but it’s apparent that by June the welcome back sign has not changed. Teachers are inundated with tasks and the website has not been a high priority for some. So why change now?

Why should teachers create websites especially when the students have planners? Can’t they just write their homework down? They can but it seems that homework or how to do it always seems to get lost along the way. You can physically put it in their binder but their book bag seems to get an appetite on the way home. Wouldn’t it be nice to have homework posted in a place that doesn’t get lost? This is a nice feature for students with 504s and Individualized Education Plans since most of them have accommodations that involve teachers making sure that they have homework copied down with a signature. Not a classroom teacher? Media Specialists can have information for book clubs and assignments that correlate. This would also be favorable when there are book fairs or any other parent involvement night. Again if information is posted in one central location it could save us time and energy!

Not fully convinced you need a website? How about getting students to create their own? I created a quick webpage about our country’s Founding Father, George Washington. I simply took another page and began embedding my own material. In 2 minutes I had replaced the other information with my own and voila George looks stunning on his webpage and even has a twitter account-not really but it piques the interests of our classroom clients and they get excited to create their own or learn from yours! With the help of the WIX website easy-to-use tools, students can create their own webpage. Media Specialists can create one as well if they are doing a lesson for any grade level on any subject. Students can use these websites to glean information on habitats, get facts for presentations, or prove what they know about poetry. Social Studies book at home? No problem students can logon to the teacher or media specialist’s websites to locate the websites they need for any assignment-had to throw that one back in (another reason to have a website-your welcome).

I have introduced reasons why Media Specialists and classroom teachers should create digital storytelling lessons for their students, but where can these be displayed? Why not use your website to display lectures that students need to watch? Yes, edmodo is another source, but why not have it in both places? That way students and parents alike will be able to view important lectures, data and information. Each week my partner teacher and I email our parents what we will be working on in class. Again, if I don’t check my email, do you think they do? Not saying you can’t have it there, but your parents could click and get a full view of what students are working on. Media Specialists can use a website to connect teachers to useful resources that will help them plan better lessons. Teachers would find it super helpful to logon to the site created by the librarian and click on their grade level then narrow their search by subject. Google is awesome, but overwhelming when educators are on a time crunch, so a simple resolution is for educators to construct a website to keep everyone in the loop and engaged!

Building a website really can be fun for Media Specialists, teachers and students alike. The tools are honestly easy to use and the best part about Wix is that it’s free. Placing important information, instructions and resources in a central location makes it easy for students, teachers, specialists and parents to stay in the loop, create and learn. Think of some other ways you can use this site and share with a partner. Explore this tool when you have more time and think of how this can significantly reduce the questions and confusion when it comes to information about the library or the classroom.

Most libraries and classrooms now have the privilege of owning I-pads or tablets. Schools have had their hands full with rules on digital devices such as these and the most controversial, the cell phone. The obvious advantage to having these devices is to improve student learning. All age levels can use tablets, and the mobility of these gadgets make it easy for students to use them for a variety of purposes. No, I am not here to sell you this miraculous piece of equipment, but to give you information about a website that also has an application that can be downloaded on the device that will prove to be a useful tool for libraries and classrooms.
