Fruit Mold Lab Report
Fruit Molds

Abstract
In this lab we looked at the mold on three different fruits in three different environments to asses
which fruit would have the most mold and in which environment the mold would be present the
most. For the experiment we used fruits that were in season so that we could also compare organic
and non–organic fruit. Because of this my group chose tomatoes, peaches and apples. We
hypothesized that peaches would rot the most out of each of the fruits and that the peaches would rot
the most in our warmest environment, the incubator. The fruits were then observed over a period of
weeks. At the end of this period of time the peaches had rotted the most and burst and the peaches in
the incubator were the first to go.
Introduction
After learning about different types of mold in lab as well as in lecture, my group and I were
interested in studying mold more. We wanted to know which fruits from our selected few would rot
the most and in which environment would they be most likely to rot or mold in. We learned ... Show

We will also see if there is any big difference between organic and inorganic fruit. According to our
lab on fungus we already knew what the mold would look like so we were pretty confident that we
would be able to identify it without a problem (lab 17 The Kingdom Fungi). With our own
knowledge we hypothesized that that out of the tomatoes, peaches, and apples that the peaches
would rot the most and that they would rot the most while in the incubator (an environment which is
approximately 90 degrees Fahrenheit). About a month later and having observed our fruits in
various increments we found that the peaches and the tomatoes were pretty close together but they
peaches ultimately molded the most and molded the most within the

Advancements in technology have changed the way of living. The benefits of swapping DNA make
the organism more acceptable to the ecosystem; therefore, increasing the survival rate of the
organism like cash crops. With our Economy, reliant on these crops there must be a way to produce
the most yield without loss. By using GMOs, we can produce a better outcome without spraying
pesticides, which is harmful, on the ecosystem. But the Media has portrayed GMOs to cause cancer
in the consumer which is causing a concern if GMOs are safe for us to eat.
Genetically altering genes has been around for ages by cross breeding plants. Genetic alteration has

journalist Barry Estabrook reveals the huge environmental cost of the $5 billion fresh tomato
industry. Fields are sprayed with more than one hundred different herbicides and pesticides.
Tomatoes are picked hard and green and artificially gassed until their skins acquire a marketable
hue. Modern plant breeding has tripled yields but has also produced fruits with dramatically reduced
amounts of calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin C, and those tomatoes that have fourteen times more
sodium than the tomatoes our used to parents enjoy. The relentless drive for low costs has fostered a
thriving modern–day slave trade in the United States" ("Estabrook"). As factual this sounds he did
not add a control to the group. When tomatoes are left over for just one day they start to decompose
losing the vital nutrition. Yes, Estabrook is partially right the decay of the tomatoes nutrients. GMOs
help prevent the rapid decay of fruits making them ship out further throughout the country of US.
Think of the difference between a typewriter and a computer. They're two different technologies that
can be used to write a book. But it makes no sense to ask "Are books written on computers good or
bad?" We all understand that it's the end product itself that's important, not the technology that
created it. Using a computer instead of a typewriter may make the work easier, but it does not
inherently result in a book that's either better or

John Sheeper Kitchen Garden
Planning is part of the fun of your kitchen garden. Long before the ground is ready to warm the
seeds, gardeners are perusing seed catalogs, making wish lists and wondering how in the world they
will find room for everything they want to grow. One of best seed catalogs I've come across and
certainly one of the more enjoyable catalogs for reading and dreaming of spring is John Scheeper's
Kitchen Garden Seeds™. The 2010 catalog is packed with seed varieties for almost every type of
vegetable – maybe some you've never tried or even heard of. What makes this 60 page catalog as
fun as it is useful is the beautiful illustrations, vivid and very detailed descriptions, delicious recipes
and horticultural tips. It is conveniently organized into sections ... Show more content on

Limited high altitude plants are available for any type of garden including a rock garden. At high
altitude, some plants can burn their leaves easily because they're closer to the sun. Many rock garden
plants that are listed as perennials at sea level, are actually annuals at high altitude. A high altitude
rock garden is one of the simplest gardens to create and can make a not–so–good looking area of
your yard, come alive with plants and rocks. The ideal location for a high altitude rock garden is a
natural slope such as those found at the side or rear of a house. A high altitude rock garden can be
very attractive near the garage or in a corner of your yard that you're not sure what to do with. Most
high altitude rock garden plants need good drainage and that's why a sloped area is best. A high
altitude rock garden doesn't have to be on a slope, it can border your front walk and your house or
anywhere that you'd like it to be. High altitude rock garden plants tend to be smaller than average,
slower–growing, and xeriscape. The best way to choose plants is to visit your favorite local nursery
to actually see rock garden plants and think about where you might place them in your high altitude
rock garden. Buying plants at your local nursery that have been acclimated to the high altitude will
make the transplanting easier on your plant. As you're checking out your local nursery to see what

Article: Diseasedefying spuds exiled from Europe – again by Andy Coghlan The issue written in
this article is regarding the banning and lack of approval for blight–resistant potatoes in the
european union. Late potato blight, a potato disease caused by the the eukaryotic microorganism
phytophthora infestans, is a significant cause for loss of crop and yield by potato farmers. Looking
back to the past, the blight was responsible for the catastrophic Irish Great Famine of the 1840s
causing eradication of their main food source, potatoes. As a result of the blight, potatoes become
rotten and unsafe for human consumption. Late potato blight today is still a serious issue because it
has caused the loss of $5.9 billion dollars of potatoes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In other situations, like devastating crop damage due to insect pests, proteins specifically toxic to the
pests may be engineered in to cause fatality within the insect, as in the case of Bt corn. Opponents of
genetically modified crops, or anti–GMO, state that the health effects of genetically modified crops
are unknown and potentially hazardous to human beings. This health effect is not known because
the genetically modified crops are a relatively new technology and it would require an extensive
period of time to study the chronic effects, if any, of the GM crops. Given the limited data available,
it is reasonable that some individuals may caution the use of GM crops. However, given that there
will be future case studies and evaluations of GM crops, it is unlikely that the GM crops will cause
any different health effects than normal crops. Anti–GMO groups also state that GMO crops are
costly for farmers and the consumers. In addition, these groups, like GeneWatch, lobby the
government in support of anti–GMO laws.
I support the case for genetically modified crops and organisms. Genetically modified crops are the
fruit of countless hours of research by researchers who work tirelessly in the pursuit of a world in
which food is more sustainable for human beings. The reason why I support the development of
GMOS is due to the fact that in light of our continually growing human species, genetically
modified crops are necessary to

Corporate Strategy : My Boss For The Overall Direction On...
To begin, I would review the corporate strategy provided by my boss for the overall direction on
how to execute our organization's functions. I would use corporate's OGSM to develop an
operations strategy concentrating on their strategies and measures as the operations and supply
management's objectives and goals. The operations unit will use the corporate OGSM to determine
how we can contribute to the success of the corporate strategy and plan to meet the company's
needs. Based on the objectives and goals assigned, I would determine which critical measures relate
the most to corporate's vision for the company. I would then evaluate our processes, their results and

After analyzing all of the data collected, I would develop an operations OGSM and deploy strategies
and measures to the next level of the organization that would be their objectives and goals. I would
ensure that any objectives set and proposed improvements to our processes were within the
company's capabilities. For example: the plan must be financially feasible for the company to carry
out.
I would employ process strategy to meet our goals and objectives. Two of our objectives are to
consolidate manufacturing facilities and to increase productivity by 20%. This can be done using
process choice to structure our manufacturing processes. Since the company only makes one
product, the line process could work to produce high volumes of standardized cans of soup in one
plant. The line process also allows the company to meet another objective of accelerating innovation
by making new products on the same line. Modifying the tomato soup line is feasible because they
can make new similar soups with the same ingredients or by using tomato soup as the base for
different recipes. The line process coupled with a make–to–stock strategy would allow our company
to improve their competitive priorities, including low–cost operations, speedy deliveries, and
consistent quality. The line process can allow the firm to invest in more efficient technology that can

Cuba Juice Essay
Introduction
Juicing is a great way to integrate fruits and vegetables into your diet, especially if you do not like to
eat whole fruits and vegetables. It can help you meet the daily recommendations for these foods as
well as allow you to consume a wide variety of fruits and vegetables in a tasty way. Juicing is
usually done with a machine which turns raw fruits and vegetables into liquid and pulp. The
machine chops the fruits and vegetables into tiny pieces and spins them, separating the juice from
the pulp.
History
Even before juicers were invented fruits were mashed. Text from the Dead Sea Scrolls, "A pounded
mash of pomegranate and fig" resulting in "profound strength and subtle form," indicates that
juicing has been around ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A centered dual knife and stabilizing knife creates consistent juice flow and stops clogging within
the feed tube which drastically cuts down the time of cleanup
The juice jug capacity is 1 liter and includes a froth separator to save the user an extra step
This model also comes with a 3 liter pulp collector so the consumer won 't have to empty it
numerous times to squeeze enough juice for multiple people
Professional Juicing
The final juicer we reviewed was targeted toward the experienced consumer. Rather than a high
speed centrifugal juicer, our last review consisted of a masticating juicer. It differs than that of the
centrifugal juicer by using a single auger to compact and squeeze the fruit 's juice along a static
screen at a slow speed, rather than pushing the fruit through a central blade at a high operating
speed. Although there are many masticating juicers, we recommend the Omega Vert VRT350 Juicer
for these reasons:
Price:
The Omega Vert VRT350 has a retail value of $430.00 but can be found online for around $380.00
Power:
This model comes stock with a 2 horsepower motor, runs on 150 watts, and runs at optimal
efficiency at 80 RPM
By running at a lower RPM, low speed juicing prevents oxidation of your juice and results in more
nutrients and enzymes found in the final product of your juice as opposed to a high speed juicer
Ease of Use:
The VRT350

What 's On Your Plate?
What's On Your Plate?
A family sits down for a meal, in front of them are all the items on the food pyramid such as dairy
and fresh fruits and vegetables, would the meal be the same if the family only had $50 a week to
spend on groceries? The answer to this question which so many American families are forced to
answer is no. Do to this low amount of money minimum wage workers are not able to get the
nutritional value needed to survive on their paychecks alone because to be nutritious you need a well
rounded diet which includes fresh fruits and vegetables which are some of the most expensive food
items and are not available on most programs like SNAP.
Wages hover around $8.15 an hour and most people work around 40 hour work weeks that gives
$326 for the week. This is excludes taxes, then families have to take into consideration the number
of mouths to feed and how many meals are needed. This has to be done on top of other expenses.
The final cost ends up being around $50 or like the statistic from Feeding America, "Nearly nine out
of ten (89%) client households with employment report an annual household income of $30,000 or
less"(Feeding America).
At the beginning of this research experiment the goal was to get 3 meals a day for a week and keep
the grand total under $50. The other part of the research was to also make the meals nutritious in the
terms of what is nutritionally needed day to day. Nutritious is "providing nourishment, especially to

Pepino Mosaic Virus: PepMV
Pepino mosaic virus
Pepino mosaic virus, also called PepMV is a relatively new virus found in plants. It has become a
wildly and fast spread virus. This virus is wide throughout and especially in tomato production.
Thus pepino mosaic virus has become a significant commercial and agronomical problem. The first
finding of this virus dates back to 1974 in field sample of pepino plants (Solanum muricatum)
located in the Canete valley in coastal Peru. The symptom of the plant is yellow mosaic in young
leaves. However this virus has not call any significant attention until 1999 when it was detected in
protected commercial tomato crops in the UK and the Netherlands. Since 2005, new strains of the
virus have rapidly spread through tomato producing region. (1) Pepino mosaic is a member of the
genus Potexvirus within the family Flexiviridae. It has filamentous particles of around 510 nm in
length which contains one genomic ssRNA molecule (6410nt). The particles are compromised of a
single 26 kDa capsid protein. The observation under UV light appears to be arrays of virus–like
filamentous particle. No vector has been identified. Studies have been made within a common aphid
species (Myzus persicae) failed to detect any transmission. PepMV natural host range appears to be
restricted to the Solanaceae family of which many species become infected systematically. But
symptomless infections develop in inoculated leaves of Tetragonia expansa and Cucumis sativus.

Insect Pollinators And Its Effects On The World
There are several different species of insect pollinators, but the bees in general make up sixty–two
percent of them. Honeybees make up thirty–nine percent of that number, and the other twenty–three
is composed of several different species of bees. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture,
one–third of the homo–sapiens diet is insect pollinated and honeybees are accountable for eighty
percent of the pollination of that one–third. The population of the honeybees in the United States has
been noticeably declining from the late 1990 's, so the threat to the majority of the world food
supply is slowly increasing as our pollinators population decreases.
Bees aren 't the only insect pollinators in the world, but they are by far the most widespread ones.
Despite this, non–bee insect pollinators have a contributing factor to the success of pollination that
the bees themselves don 't. There have been studies on the success of the pollination and 'seeding ' of
flowers and plants. Bees have a fairly average success rate, focusing more on spreading the
pollination farther afield than the success of the 'seeding '. Non–bee insects tend to stay in a small
ranged area that allows them to visit the same flowers more often, thus increasing the success of
their visits.
Non–bee insect pollinators include flies, beetles, moths, butterflies, wasps, ants, birds, and bats, just
to name a few. Furthermore, they are far less reliant upon their natural habitats, allowing them to

Sample Resume : Korean Cooking
Korean cooking uses a lot of fresh produce. Most of the year I am fortunate to have a garden, where
I can harvest vegetables the same day that I plan to cook them. However, during the winter, I need to
purchase produce at a grocery store. For specialty Asian produce, I have to travel about 45 minutes
get to a Korean store. When I have to travel that far, I tend to stock up on produce to last me a
couple of weeks. How to I keep them fresh? Here are a few tips I have learned to keep produce
fresher, longer.
Clean Your Fridge
Begin by tossing out the old, unusable produce. It happens to the best of us, you buy some tasty
strawberries and forgot they were in your crisper. Old and over ripe (rotten) produce will cause your
fresh produce to ripen faster. If you haven't eaten by now, just toss it. Wipe down your crispers or
whichever drawer you are planning to store the produce in. If you make this a weekly or even a
monthly habit, it will be easy to do before the next shopping trip. The goal is to be able to see your
produce. Being able to see what you have will help you remember to use it.
Buy the Freshest Produce
Get the freshest produce you can afford. Inspect the fruit or vegetable for any visible blemishes. If
you plan to eat cook them the day of purchase, then go ahead and take advantage of the produce
that's marked down due to ripeness. However, if your goal is to stock up for the next couple of
weeks, skip the over–ripe stuff.

My Experience At The Gym
When I started searching for a place to volunteer, I had a tough time finding the correct place,
because most places required for me to fill out an application to do a background check. I
understand is a process, but it was going to take too much time, and I wanted to start as soon as
possible because of time matter. However, that was not the only problem. The main issue was my
work schedule because I work two jobs, and I only have free time part of the weekends, which made
my situation much more complicated. The places I called needed the most help on week days. After
calling several places and visiting some of the locations, I decided to try another day and went to
work. While I was at work, I was having a conversation with one of the young lady's that exercises
there at the gym, I was telling her about my service learning, and that I had been looking all day but
could not yet find one that would work with my schedule. As I was telling her this, someone
overheard the conversation and said... "I work at the food bank you can come and volunteer with us"
Her name is Nicole Anderson, and she offered to help me get everything set up for me to volunteer
with the community food bank. Nicole said that they always needed volunteers there, and all I had
to do, was to talk to the volunteer coordinator Adam Baker. I did as she told me to do and tried
calling the coordinator the next day but unfortunately, I couldn't talk to him, because he was out of
town. I drove to the location after

Tomato ( Solanum Lycopersicum )
[1] Background According to Kimura and Sinha (2008), tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is one of
the most important vegetable plants around the world, as it 's produced in disparate areas like south
western America and Africa. It is also considered the second most abundant horticultural product
after the potato. Perveen et al. (2015), stated that, currently, there are thirteen recognized wild
tomato species which allows a great diversity in the phenotypes. The tomato (Solanum
lycopersicum) is an important source for disparate essential compounds such as folic acid,
carotenoids, and potassium. Due to its widely use; not only as a food but also as a perfect material
which can be used in research to treat serious and devastating diseases as certain types of cancers
(melanoma "skin cancer" and breast cancer), cardiovascular diseases and photo–aging (Liu et el.,
2012). The use of it in such important researches returns to its anti–oxidant activity which arises
from the carotenoids pigments it contains like alpha–carotene, beta–carotene, and lycopene (Dorais
et el., 2008). Tomato contains a lot of compounds which have a high benefits for health, and also for
its wonderful flavor which is used in our daily food as a flavor during cooking. The question here is
what is the compound which plays an important role in all this benefits of carotenoids? The answer
is lycopene. 1– Lycopene and its occurrence: Al–Amri (2013) clarified that, lycopene is one of the
most abundant natural pigments

Plants are the major source of vitamin B6 for animals, yet the biosynthesis pathway and the function
of vitamin B6 in plants are not well elucidated. In this study, an Arabidopsis pyridoxine synthase
gene PDX1 was characterized and its in vivo functions were investigated. The PDX1 gene was
expressed in all plant parts examined and its expression level was not significantly regulated by
abiotic stress or the phytohormone abscisic acid. In roots, PDX1 was highly expressed in a defined
region behind the root tips that undergoes rapid cell division. The PDX1 protein was mainly
associated with the plasma membrane and endomembranes, implying a potential involvement of
vitamin B6 in membrane function. To reveal the in vivo role of PDX1, Arabidopsis insertional
mutants were isolated. Strikingly, the pdx1 knockout mutants were impaired in root growth and
early seedling development. The stunted roots resulted from both reduced cell division and
elongation. Supplementation of the growth media with pyridoxine or reintroduction of the wild–type
PDX1 gene into the mutants completely restored the mutant growth, demonstrating that PDX1 is
required for pyridoxine biosynthesis in planta. In addition to the developmental defects, pdx1
mutants are hypersensitive to osmotic stress and oxidative stress. These mutant seedlings had
increased peroxidation of membrane lipids following UV treatment. Our study establishes a

War, Fruits Vs. Vegetables
We are at war, fruits vs. vegetables. We have been fighting for centuries now, blood and gore could
be smelled anywhere you go, countless bodies and corpses. The Vegetables were fighting for equal
rights, they didn't want to be their servants anymore. But on 1956, V–Day was the day the
Vegetables didn't have to listen to the Fruits. My grandfather fought on V–Day, he was a brave
avocado soldier the Vegetable Army ever had. The was the day everything was going to change for
the vegetables but it didn't change as much as my father thought it would. Plus the reason we were
fighting for is stupid.
Today is September 14, 2013. I didn't understand why vegetables and fruits were in constant
fighting. Vegetables say that they 're healthier for the Creator, but Fruits say they 're sweeter for the
Creator. Well long–story–short, the Creator doesn't know we are talking and living food. We call
him the creator because he created the Fruits and Vegetables. Vegetables are the poorest part of our
society, our society is what our creator calls "Farm" or "Greenhouse". Anyways, I am part of the
Vegetables. The Fruits don't respect us and think less of us, they think they are better than us
because the creator always picks them first for the "Stage". Nobody really knows what happens in
the "Stage", no one has come back from the Stage to tell the story. We just consider it as an honor to
be selected for the Stage, but seems were vegetables we are almost never picked. The Fruits still let

In the article Farmer's Market Values by Mark Bittman, published by The New York Times in
August 2014 indicates that "Farmers' markets are not just markets. They're educational systems that
teach us how food is raised and why that matters." When purchasing from a supermarket no one
really know where the fruit or vegetable came from. Agricultural consumer can ask how the they
farmer grew the crop. Therefore, getting to know your farmer is the only way on getting to know
your food. A tomato at a farmer's market cost $6 a pound, you might have notice a tomato in the

explosive flavor the surges through your mouth. In other words, the tomatoes from the farmers
market might cost a little bit more, but you can be guaranteed that those tomatoes are the most

The company is financially not doing well right now and the company has recorded a Net Operating
loss for three years now. I think the company is not financially secure because of how unstable US
economy can become. During the last American recession in 2007, which did not end for a few
years ago. large amounts of jobs were cut worldwide and those individuals remained unemployed
for long periods of time. Recession decreases people's purchasing power. If consumers' income is
down, their demand will decrease which will lead to a decrease in company's profits. Since
Campbell cannot control the economy, recession, the global market, worldwide cuts in jobs, a

Tomato Plant
TOMATO PLANT 1)
Seed: Tomato seeds are small, flat and disk shaped and about 1/8 inch wide. They contain two
energy storage organs called cotyledons and an embryo encased in a hard outer shell called the seed
coat. The seed is the dormant or resting stage of the plant life cycle. When young tomato plants are
damaged, they tend to go into a dormant, survival stage in which plant growth is delayed for a
while. Frost damage is something to look out for when planting tomatoes early on in the season.
Frost damage is marked by tender, dark green spots on the leaves. Although they won't kill the plant,
frostbites will make them dormant for a while, delaying plant growth. During the germination
process, the seed absorbs moisture and nutrients ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They have their own definite shape and arrangement in plants according to their requirements.
Leaves trap energy from sunlight and convert it into pure compounds. For this the leaves are
arranged on the stem in a way that they are exposed mostly in the sunlight. i) Leaves help in the
process of plant cellular respiration. Plant cellular respiration carried out in the daylight is called
photorespiration, or light respiration. The plant uses a portion of the oxygen created by
photosynthesis. Since the process of photosynthesis produces more oxygen than the plant can use,
the excess is released into the air through the stomata, tiny air holes in the leaves. The plant takes its
sugars directly from what is being produced by photosynthesis. 5) Food Making: j) Photosynthesis:
the process of producing and releasing oxygen in the air. Photosynthesis is performed by the plants
to produce their own food. The process of Photosynthesis requires direct sunlight, carbon–dioxide
and water (H2O). In the process of Photosynthesis, the plants decompose the molecules of hydrogen
and carbon–dioxide into hydrogen, carbon and oxygen to produce glucose which forms the source
of their energy, growth and food. This involves the conversion of stored energy of the sunlight,
water and carbon–dioxide into glucose which is an organic compound and release oxygen in the
process. k) Importance of photosynthesis: Plants are the only living things that produce their own
food.

Cadman Food Processors Essay
Managerial Data Analysis | Cadman Food Processors |
Submitted To: Professor D. Cook
Submitted By: Group 3
Executive Summary
The VP of Operations of Cadman Foods faces the decision of having to allocate three million
pounds of tomatoes to the production of canned whole tomatoes, tomato juice or tomato paste.
Subsequent to that decision, the VP needs to determine whether to acquire 80,000 pounds of
additional "A" quality tomatoes at $0.425 per pound. Bill Cooper, the Controller at Cadman Foods
has recommended that Cadman produce the maximum quantity of canned whole tomatoes based on
Dan Tuckers assessment of the tomato crop. By logical extrapolation, this would result in the
remainder of the crop being allocated to the production ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In determining the net profit for each product line, Bill Cooper calculated the difference between the
selling price and the combined input costs as per the formula below.
Net Profit=Selling Price–Variable Costs Including Fruit– Allocated Overhead
Figure [ 1 ]: Bill Cooper's Net Profit Calculation
Bill Cooper factored in allocated overhead costs for each line based on what we assume to be his
production estimates. In his analysis, he determined that incremental profit was greatest on whole
tomatoes ($0.60) and his production allocation is based off of this metric. Based on his analysis, the
contribution to net profit per pound of tomato can be summarized as follows:
CAW= CBW = 0.618=0.033 | CAJ= CBJ =0.4520= 0.0225 | CAP= CBP =0.625= 0.024 |
Figure [ 2 ]: Bill Coopers Contribution Calculation
Dan Tucker, the Production Manager at Cadman, is said to have brought to Bill's attention that based
on the crop quality, whole tomato production would be limited to 800,000 pounds or 44,444 cases ( [
Table 1 ]). Dan arrived at this conclusion by taking into account the 600,000 pounds of "A" quality
tomatoes available and the minimum required average score of 8 required for whole canned tomato
production.
Min Whole Tomato Average Score=600×9+ (UBW×5)600+UBW=8
∴UBW=200

Taking a Look at Solanine
solanine
It is a glycoalkaloid. It is a poison. It is present in the nightshade family i.e Solanaceae especially in
species tomato and potato. Solanine is found naturally in many parts of plants e.g tubers, leaves and
fruits. It also has pesticidal and fungicidal characteristics. It also act as a natural defence system of
plant. Firstly it was extracted in 1820 from a berry i.e Solanum nigram.
Solanine poisoning and it's symptoms primary symptoms of solanine poisoning are neurological and
gastrointestinal disorders.
Other symptoms may be vomiting, burning of throat, nausea, cardiac dysrythmia, diarrhea,
nightmare, dizziness, stomach cramps and a common symptom headache.
Hypothermia, fever, dilated pupils, hallucination, paralysis and losss of sensation occur in very
severe cases and somtimes death can also accur.
Way of action
A result of a study show that the mechanism of solanine toxicity is mainly due to it's chemical
interaction with the membranes of mitochondria. It is shown by experiments that when solanine is
exposed, it result in opening of pottassium channels of mitochondrial membrane, in it's result the
membrane potential is decreased and then Ca 2+ are transported from mitochondria to the cytoplasm
due to which concentration of Ca 2+ is increased in the cytoplasm which result in the apoptosis i.e
cell death and cell damage.
Solanine in potatoes solanine is found naturally in the speacies of genus Solanum e.g egg plant,
tomato and potato

*~300 A.D. Rome – Roses were forced to flower early by the addition of warm water into the

THEREFORE, up to ~300 A.D., the ancients had perfected protected agriculture (terraced
growing areas, mulches and compost heating), greenhouses, hot air and hot water heating systems
and had experimented with plant nutrition, water culture and more. THEN: The Great Library in

DEVELOPMENT OF PROTECTED AGRICULTURE AND GREENHOUSES: People want to

Hypertension Is The Medical Term For Having High Blood...
In this project Jose, Diana, Adrian and I were tasked with producing a menu for persons with
hypertension and a nut allergy. Hypertension is the medical term for having high blood pressure.
One of the main causes of hypertension is a poor diet. It is affected most commonly by high levels
of sodium (Pg. 321). To combat high blood pressure, the DASH diet was developed. DASH stands
for dietary approaches to stop hypertension. Foods that are recommended to eat while on the DASH
diet are whole grains, fruits and vegetables, fat–free or low–fat dairy, lean meat, poultry, fish, nuts,
seeds, beans, fats and oils, sweets, and sodium limited to under 2400 milligrams per day (Pg. 322).
The only perceivable obstacle for the menu development was the recommendation for nuts.
However, the nutrients provided through nuts can be found in other foods like fats and oils and
various protein sources. The first item on the menu is a quinoa patty as an appetizer. The dish
contains quinoa, carrot, celery, onion, egg, olive oil, peppers, and a dash of salt. We chose this as our
appetizer because it appears to follow the DASH diet quite well. Quinoa is a whole grain; carrots,
celery, onions, and peppers represent the fruits and vegetables category; the egg is not a low–fat
dairy product, but the amount of egg in the recipe is very minimal; olive oil is a fat and oil, and the
quinoa patties are lightly salted in an attempt to keep flavor yet stay under the recommended daily
limit. The first entree

Heinz Ketchup Commercial
My choice of media is an advertisement by Kraft Foods Inc. and I chose it because it's minimalistic
and intriguing. Thesis and Focus How simplicity and authenticity overrule ostentatious
advertisements: A visual analysis of the Heinz ad campaign. Description In the above advertisement
for Heinz ketchup, the company takes an approach to amaze their audience with the help of abstract
art. The featured advertisement is for Heinz Ketchup. It includes a garish red backdrop. It also
features something that looks like a classic bottle of Heinz ketchup, but actually are horizontally
sliced tomatoes bundled on top of each other in the shape of the classic ketchup bottle. The text
below reads, "No one grows ketchup like Heinz." While the advertisement is simple and
minimalistic, the combination of text and picture is enticing to the targeted consumer. While other
ketchup companies have flashy ads claiming they have the best tasting ketchup in the industry,
Heinz takes a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even an advertisement about a universally known brand has the potential to be interpreted in various
ways. In the Heinz example, a consumer may see the sliced ketchup bottle as an abstract sculpture,
and therefore associate the company with innovation and art. By stating "No one grows ketchup like
Heinz", they are saying that their ketchup uses natural and fresh ingredients, unlike other competing
brands. Ketchup is made in a factory and by any means isn't 'grown'. However, the text below the
picture reads otherwise. By this, the marketers transform a sugary condiment into a wholesome, raw
ingredient. This is clearly an attempt by the advertisers to assign a healthy connotation to ketchup.
Not only are the advertisers attaching a nutritional aspect to ketchup, they are redefining ketchup
perhaps in an attempt to promote a healthier way of

Pizz A Popular Food Eaten By Many People
Pizza, a globally popular food eaten by many people in different countries throughout the world.
Usually known for its circular shape, made out of dough, tomato sauce, and the variety of toppings

Conversely, The Flavr Savour tomato possesses supressed activity of the enzyme polygalacturonase.
The suppression contributes to the fruits ability to stay harder for longer allowing it to stay on the
vine. This suppression allows the tomato to develop its natural flavours and ripen as it stays on the
vine for a longer time period. This flavour saving process lead to the products name "The Flavr
Savr".
The Flavr Savr tomato is created through the use of antisense gene technologies to decrease the
polygalacturonase activity. The kan(r) is a gene from the bacteria Escherichia coli, alongside with
the gene from the Flavr Savr tomato they are inserted into a plasmid that resembles a round ring of
DNA. These plasmids are further inserted into a group of normal tomato cells in a medium growth
that contains the kanamycin antibiotic Engel 7. This process produces the APH (3') II substance that
allows the cell to become resistant to the antibiotic. This process is used to identify the genetically
transformed genes. The gene of the Flavr Savr initially coded for a strand of RNA, which was the
reverse strand of RNA that occurs in a natural tomato plant. The original RNA strand contains the
enzyme polygalacturonase degrading the cell wall, making the fruit soft. The RNA strand made
from the Flavr Savr gene binds to the polygalacturonase RNA in a process to cancel each other out
as demonstrated in figure 1.

Garden Of The Gods : A State Park
Garden of the Gods is a state park in Colorado Springs, Colorado. My children asked me how it
came by its name and for any of you who may not understand the reasoning behind its uncommon
name, I will explain. The Garden of the Gods consists of rock formations that are stunningly
beautiful and graceful against the deep Colorado blue sky. If you picture the Garden of the Gods
from the sky, such as how a god would see it from the heavens you will begin to understand why it
is called by its unique name. The garden has countless trails through the rocks with panoramic views
of breathtakingly beautiful scenery. You can walk through the rocks, on trails the park has marked
out for you all year round. The trails go for miles and miles through the historic garden while some
extend out to a green valley of grass that offers shade trees and endless dirt paths. This valley is off

Chemistry Lab And Organic Chemistry
After a harsh Wednesday due to Chemistry Lab and Organic Chemistry, I enjoy sitting in the patio
area of Cafe 1919 and enjoy a Panini along with a Caprese salad. Both the main dish and side
contain a fruit I once hated as a child. Tomato have always been the part of the burger I threw out,
the part of the salad I did not touch, the part I could never swallow. Even throughout high school, I
always hated tomatoes, but ever since I got to UCLA my love for this fruit exponentially grew out of
nowhere. One day as I was enjoying my usual Wednesday lunch, I wonder what gave these little
morsels such a juicy taste. Perhaps UCLA does but the best fruit and vegetables for their students,
perhaps the oil the tomatoes bathe in give it its rich taste, or perhaps we have those hidden GMO,
gentically modified organisms, that people argue over its stability. I search if there is any known
gentically altered tomatoes and the search engine directed me to links that talk about a product
known as the Flavr Savr. Interesting enough the product known as the Flavr Savr, which is a
gentically altered tomato is actually the first FDA approved GMO to hit to the market. After
discovering the first ever GMO my curious mind started asking questions that I needed to know. I
wonder what exactly is the Flavr Sav? When was it created? Who created it and how? Was there a

Red Brand Canners.
Dear Mr. Gordon,
We have completed the analysis of your goal to determine the amount of tomato products to pack for
the season. This report consists of defining the whole problem and the solution as you desired to be,
with respect to limitations and possibilities that already exist, management policies,
recommendations and alternatives.
By modulating the problem, we found out that the highest profit is obtained with 615.000 pounds of
canned whole tomatoes from grade A and 205,000 from grade B, 65.000 juice from grade A and
195.000 from B, and 2.000.000 paste tomatoes from grade B. So the whole net profit will be
$47.600. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Grade B tomatoes were averaged 5 points per pound. The minimum average input quality for
canned whole tomatoes was 8 points per pound and for tomato juice was 6 points per pound.
The whole tomato production was limited to 800.000
Variables: The following variables were defined to do the calculations and will be used for our
analysis.
X1 è pounds of grade A tomatoes in canned whole tomatoes. X2 è pounds of grade B tomatoes
in canned whole tomatoes.
9X1 + 5X2 ≥ 8 (X1 + X2) è 9X1 + 5X2 = 8 (X1 + X2) è 9X1 – 8X1 = 8X2 –
‐ 5X2 è X1 =
3X2
We know that X1 is maximum 600.000 pounds of the total crop. Substituting this
value on the equation above we obtained the value for X2: !"".!!!
X1 = 3X2 è 600.000 = 3X2 è X2 = ! = 200.000
Adding the two values of X1 and X2 we obtained the limited production amount for whole
tomatoes:

Tomato Production Of The Tomato Plant
BIG QUESTION– where do tomatoes come from and how can we maximise yield?
Alex Cottam
Tomatoes are edible fruits of Solanum lycopersicum , More commonly known as the tomato plant.
The plant originated in central America. Tomatoes are used in many dishes across the globe but were
first used in mexico. Tomatoes are grown in temperate climates around the world however more
hardy strains have been produced meaning some can survive at lower temperatures however to
maximise yield lower temperatures are not ideal. In cooler areas of the globe they can be grown in
greenhouses. They grow ,depending on the strain, anywhere from one metre tall to 3 metres tall
although "bush" variates have the maximum yield. Being so tall the plant often cannot support itself
as they have weak stems therefore support is required ie canes, stakes etc.
The tomato plant is a perennial (grows back each year) in its native climate and grown as an annual
(only survives one year then dies from lower temperatures) in temperate climates. In the greenhouse
the plant needs to be kept above 16 degrees celsius and below 32 degrees , otherwise the enzymes
will become denatured. ideally between 22–26 degrees as this will best imitate its native climate.
Temperature is one of the limiting factors of plant growth so is one of the key factors to achieve a
high yield. In order to keep it at these temperatures a greenhouse should be used or they should be
planted in their native climate however a greenhouse is more ideal

Fruit Mold Lab Report

  • 1. Fruit Mold Lab Report Fruit Molds Brenna Rivera November 29, 2016 Anaruth Alfaro Abstract In this lab we looked at the mold on three different fruits in three different environments to asses which fruit would have the most mold and in which environment the mold would be present the most. For the experiment we used fruits that were in season so that we could also compare organic and non–organic fruit. Because of this my group chose tomatoes, peaches and apples. We hypothesized that peaches would rot the most out of each of the fruits and that the peaches would rot the most in our warmest environment, the incubator. The fruits were then observed over a period of weeks. At the end of this period of time the peaches had rotted the most and burst and the peaches in the incubator were the first to go. Introduction After learning about different types of mold in lab as well as in lecture, my group and I were interested in studying mold more. We wanted to know which fruits from our selected few would rot the most and in which environment would they be most likely to rot or mold in. We learned ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We will also see if there is any big difference between organic and inorganic fruit. According to our lab on fungus we already knew what the mold would look like so we were pretty confident that we would be able to identify it without a problem (lab 17 The Kingdom Fungi). With our own knowledge we hypothesized that that out of the tomatoes, peaches, and apples that the peaches would rot the most and that they would rot the most while in the incubator (an environment which is approximately 90 degrees Fahrenheit). About a month later and having observed our fruits in various increments we found that the peaches and the tomatoes were pretty close together but they peaches ultimately molded the most and molded the most within the ... The benefits of swapping DNA make the organism more acceptable to the ecosystem; therefore, increasing the survival rate of the organism like cash crops. With our Economy, reliant on these crops there must be a way to produce the most yield without loss. By using GMOs, we can produce a better outcome without spraying pesticides, which is harmful, on the ecosystem. But the Media has portrayed GMOs to cause cancer in the consumer which is causing a concern if GMOs are safe for us to eat. But in Tomatoland, which is based on his James Beard Award–winning article." "The Price of Tomatoes," (Estabrook). Investigative food journalist Barry Estabrook reveals the huge environmental cost of the $5 billion fresh tomato industry. Fields are sprayed with more than one hundred different herbicides and pesticides. Tomatoes are picked hard and green and artificially gassed until their skins acquire a marketable hue. They're two different technologies that can be used to write a book. But it makes no sense to ask "Are books written on computers good or bad?" We all understand that it's the end product itself that's important, not the technology that created it. Using a computer instead of a typewriter may make the work easier, but it does not inherently result in a book that's either better or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Long before the ground is ready to warm the seeds, gardeners are perusing seed catalogs, making wish lists and wondering how in the world they will find room for everything they want to grow. One of best seed catalogs I've come across and certainly one of the more enjoyable catalogs for reading and dreaming of spring is John Scheeper's Kitchen Garden Seeds™. The 2010 catalog is packed with seed varieties for almost every type of vegetable – maybe some you've never tried or even heard of. What makes this 60 page catalog as fun as it is useful is the beautiful illustrations, vivid and very detailed descriptions, delicious recipes and horticultural tips. At high altitude, some plants can burn their leaves easily because they're closer to the sun. Many rock garden plants that are listed as perennials at sea level, are actually annuals at high altitude. A high altitude rock garden is one of the simplest gardens to create and can make a not–so–good looking area of your yard, come alive with plants and rocks. The ideal location for a high altitude rock garden is a natural slope such as those found at the side or rear of a house. A high altitude rock garden can be very attractive near the garage or in a corner of your yard that you're not sure what to do with. Most high altitude rock garden plants need good drainage and that's why a sloped area is best. A high altitude rock garden doesn't have to be on a slope, it can border your front walk and your house or anywhere that you'd like it to be. High altitude rock garden plants tend to be smaller than average, slower–growing, and xeriscape. The best way to choose plants is to visit your favorite local nursery to actually see rock garden plants and think about where you might place them in your high altitude rock garden. Article: Diseasedefying spuds exiled from Europe – again by Andy Coghlan The issue written in this article is regarding the banning and lack of approval for blight–resistant potatoes in the european union. Late potato blight, a potato disease caused by the the eukaryotic microorganism phytophthora infestans, is a significant cause for loss of crop and yield by potato farmers. Looking back to the past, the blight was responsible for the catastrophic Irish Great Famine of the 1840s causing eradication of their main food source, potatoes. As a result of the blight, potatoes become rotten and unsafe for human consumption. Late potato blight today is still a serious issue because it has caused the loss of $5.9 billion dollars of potatoes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In other situations, like devastating crop damage due to insect pests, proteins specifically toxic to the pests may be engineered in to cause fatality within the insect, as in the case of Bt corn. Opponents of genetically modified crops, or anti–GMO, state that the health effects of genetically modified crops are unknown and potentially hazardous to human beings. This health effect is not known because the genetically modified crops are a relatively new technology and it would require an extensive period of time to study the chronic effects, if any, of the GM crops. Given the limited data available, it is reasonable that some individuals may caution the use of GM crops. However, given that there will be future case studies and evaluations of GM crops, it is unlikely that the GM crops will cause any different health effects than normal crops. Anti–GMO groups also state that GMO crops are costly for farmers and the consumers. In addition, these groups, like GeneWatch, lobby the government in support of anti–GMO laws. I support the case for genetically modified crops and organisms. Genetically modified crops are the fruit of countless hours of research by researchers who work tirelessly in the pursuit of a world in which food is more sustainable for human beings. The reason why I support the development of GMOS is due to the fact that in light of our continually growing human species, genetically modified crops are necessary to ... • 11. Cuba Juice Essay Introduction Juicing is a great way to integrate fruits and vegetables into your diet, especially if you do not like to eat whole fruits and vegetables. It can help you meet the daily recommendations for these foods as well as allow you to consume a wide variety of fruits and vegetables in a tasty way. Juicing is usually done with a machine which turns raw fruits and vegetables into liquid and pulp. The machine chops the fruits and vegetables into tiny pieces and spins them, separating the juice from the pulp. History Even before juicers were invented fruits were mashed. Text from the Dead Sea Scrolls, "A pounded mash of pomegranate and fig" resulting in "profound strength and subtle form," indicates that juicing has been around ... Rather than a high speed centrifugal juicer, our last review consisted of a masticating juicer. It differs than that of the centrifugal juicer by using a single auger to compact and squeeze the fruit 's juice along a static screen at a slow speed, rather than pushing the fruit through a central blade at a high operating speed. Although there are many masticating juicers, we recommend the Omega Vert VRT350 Juicer for these reasons: Price: The Omega Vert VRT350 has a retail value of $430.00 but can be found online for around $380.00 Power: This model comes stock with a 2 horsepower motor, runs on 150 watts, and runs at optimal efficiency at 80 RPM By running at a lower RPM, low speed juicing prevents oxidation of your juice and results in more nutrients and enzymes found in the final product of your juice as opposed to a high speed juicer Ease of Use: The VRT350

A family sits down for a meal, in front of them are all the items on the food pyramid such as dairy and fresh fruits and vegetables, would the meal be the same if the family only had $50 a week to spend on groceries? The answer to this question which so many American families are forced to answer is no. Do to this low amount of money minimum wage workers are not able to get the nutritional value needed to survive on their paychecks alone because to be nutritious you need a well rounded diet which includes fresh fruits and vegetables which are some of the most expensive food items and are not available on most programs like SNAP. This virus is wide throughout and especially in tomato production. Thus pepino mosaic virus has become a significant commercial and agronomical problem. The first finding of this virus dates back to 1974 in field sample of pepino plants (Solanum muricatum) located in the Canete valley in coastal Peru. The symptom of the plant is yellow mosaic in young leaves. However this virus has not call any significant attention until 1999 when it was detected in protected commercial tomato crops in the UK and the Netherlands. Since 2005, new strains of the virus have rapidly spread through tomato producing region. (1) Pepino mosaic is a member of the genus Potexvirus within the family Flexiviridae. It has filamentous particles of around 510 nm in length which contains one genomic ssRNA molecule (6410nt). The particles are compromised of a single 26 kDa capsid protein. The observation under UV light appears to be arrays of virus–like filamentous particle. No vector has been identified. Studies have been made within a common aphid species (Myzus persicae) failed to detect any transmission. PepMV natural host range appears to be restricted to the Solanaceae family of which many species become infected systematically. Honeybees make up thirty–nine percent of that number, and the other twenty–three is composed of several different species of bees. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, one–third of the homo–sapiens diet is insect pollinated and honeybees are accountable for eighty percent of the pollination of that one–third. The population of the honeybees in the United States has been noticeably declining from the late 1990 's, so the threat to the majority of the world food supply is slowly increasing as our pollinators population decreases. Bees aren 't the only insect pollinators in the world, but they are by far the most widespread ones. Despite this, non–bee insect pollinators have a contributing factor to the success of pollination that the bees themselves don 't. There have been studies on the success of the pollination and 'seeding ' of flowers and plants. Bees have a fairly average success rate, focusing more on spreading the pollination farther afield than the success of the 'seeding '. Non–bee insects tend to stay in a small ranged area that allows them to visit the same flowers more often, thus increasing the success of their visits. Non–bee insect pollinators include flies, beetles, moths, butterflies, wasps, ants, birds, and bats, just to name a few. For specialty Asian produce, I have to travel about 45 minutes get to a Korean store. When I have to travel that far, I tend to stock up on produce to last me a couple of weeks. How to I keep them fresh? Here are a few tips I have learned to keep produce fresher, longer. Clean Your Fridge Begin by tossing out the old, unusable produce. It happens to the best of us, you buy some tasty strawberries and forgot they were in your crisper. Old and over ripe (rotten) produce will cause your fresh produce to ripen faster. If you haven't eaten by now, just toss it. Wipe down your crispers or whichever drawer you are planning to store the produce in. If you make this a weekly or even a monthly habit, it will be easy to do before the next shopping trip. The goal is to be able to see your produce. Being able to see what you have will help you remember to use it. Buy the Freshest Produce Get the freshest produce you can afford. Inspect the fruit or vegetable for any visible blemishes. If you plan to eat cook them the day of purchase, then go ahead and take advantage of the produce that's marked down due to ripeness. However, if your goal is to stock up for the next couple of weeks, skip the over–ripe stuff. Ethylene Gas The reason why some ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Tomato ( Solanum Lycopersicum ) [1] Background According to Kimura and Sinha (2008), tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is one of the most important vegetable plants around the world, as it 's produced in disparate areas like south western America and Africa. It is also considered the second most abundant horticultural product after the potato. Perveen et al. (2015), stated that, currently, there are thirteen recognized wild tomato species which allows a great diversity in the phenotypes. The tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is an important source for disparate essential compounds such as folic acid, carotenoids, and potassium. Due to its widely use; not only as a food but also as a perfect material which can be used in research to treat serious and devastating diseases as certain types of cancers (melanoma "skin cancer" and breast cancer), cardiovascular diseases and photo–aging (Liu et el., 2012). The use of it in such important researches returns to its anti–oxidant activity which arises from the carotenoids pigments it contains like alpha–carotene, beta–carotene, and lycopene (Dorais et el., 2008). Tomato contains a lot of compounds which have a high benefits for health, and also for its wonderful flavor which is used in our daily food as a flavor during cooking. The question here is what is the compound which plays an important role in all this benefits of carotenoids? In this study, an Arabidopsis pyridoxine synthase gene PDX1 was characterized and its in vivo functions were investigated. The PDX1 gene was expressed in all plant parts examined and its expression level was not significantly regulated by abiotic stress or the phytohormone abscisic acid. In roots, PDX1 was highly expressed in a defined region behind the root tips that undergoes rapid cell division. The PDX1 protein was mainly associated with the plasma membrane and endomembranes, implying a potential involvement of vitamin B6 in membrane function. To reveal the in vivo role of PDX1, Arabidopsis insertional mutants were isolated. Strikingly, the pdx1 knockout mutants were impaired in root growth and early seedling development. The stunted roots resulted from both reduced cell division and

They contain two energy storage organs called cotyledons and an embryo encased in a hard outer shell called the seed coat. The seed is the dormant or resting stage of the plant life cycle. When young tomato plants are damaged, they tend to go into a dormant, survival stage in which plant growth is delayed for a while. Frost damage is something to look out for when planting tomatoes early on in the season. Frost damage is marked by tender, dark green spots on the leaves. Although they won't kill the plant, frostbites will make them dormant for a while, delaying plant growth. During the germination process, the seed absorbs moisture and nutrients ... Leaves trap energy from sunlight and convert it into pure compounds. For this the leaves are arranged on the stem in a way that they are exposed mostly in the sunlight. i) Leaves help in the process of plant cellular respiration. Plant cellular respiration carried out in the daylight is called photorespiration, or light respiration. The plant uses a portion of the oxygen created by photosynthesis. Since the process of photosynthesis produces more oxygen than the plant can use, the excess is released into the air through the stomata, tiny air holes in the leaves. The plant takes its sugars directly from what is being produced by photosynthesis. 5) Food Making: j) Photosynthesis: the process of producing and releasing oxygen in the air. Photosynthesis is performed by the plants to produce their own food. The process of Photosynthesis requires direct sunlight, carbon–dioxide and water (H2O). Based on his analysis, the contribution to net profit per pound of tomato can be summarized as follows: CAW= CBW = 0.618=0.033 | CAJ= CBJ =0.4520= 0.0225 | CAP= CBP =0.625= 0.024 | Figure [ 2 ]: Bill Coopers Contribution Calculation Dan Tucker, the Production Manager at Cadman, is said to have brought to Bill's attention that based on the crop quality, whole tomato production would be limited to 800,000 pounds or 44,444 cases ( [ Table 1 ]). Dan arrived at this conclusion by taking into account the 600,000 pounds of "A" quality tomatoes available and the minimum required average score of 8 required for whole canned tomato production. Min Whole Tomato Average Score=600×9+ (UBW×5)600+UBW=8 ∴UBW=200

  • 49. Taking a Look at Solanine solanine It is a glycoalkaloid. It is a poison. It is present in the nightshade family i.e Solanaceae especially in species tomato and potato. Solanine is found naturally in many parts of plants e.g tubers, leaves and fruits. It also has pesticidal and fungicidal characteristics. It also act as a natural defence system of plant. Firstly it was extracted in 1820 from a berry i.e Solanum nigram. Solanine poisoning and it's symptoms primary symptoms of solanine poisoning are neurological and gastrointestinal disorders. Other symptoms may be vomiting, burning of throat, nausea, cardiac dysrythmia, diarrhea, nightmare, dizziness, stomach cramps and a common symptom headache. Hypothermia, fever, dilated pupils, hallucination, paralysis and losss of sensation occur in very severe cases and somtimes death can also accur. Way of action A result of a study show that the mechanism of solanine toxicity is mainly due to it's chemical interaction with the membranes of mitochondria. It is shown by experiments that when solanine is exposed, it result in opening of pottassium channels of mitochondrial membrane, in it's result the membrane potential is decreased and then Ca 2+ are transported from mitochondria to the cytoplasm due to which concentration of Ca 2+ is increased in the cytoplasm which result in the apoptosis i.e cell death and cell damage. • 53. Hypertension Is The Medical Term For Having High Blood... In this project Jose, Diana, Adrian and I were tasked with producing a menu for persons with hypertension and a nut allergy. Hypertension is the medical term for having high blood pressure. One of the main causes of hypertension is a poor diet. It is affected most commonly by high levels of sodium (Pg. 321). To combat high blood pressure, the DASH diet was developed. DASH stands for dietary approaches to stop hypertension. Foods that are recommended to eat while on the DASH diet are whole grains, fruits and vegetables, fat–free or low–fat dairy, lean meat, poultry, fish, nuts, seeds, beans, fats and oils, sweets, and sodium limited to under 2400 milligrams per day (Pg. 322). The only perceivable obstacle for the menu development was the recommendation for nuts. However, the nutrients provided through nuts can be found in other foods like fats and oils and various protein sources. The first item on the menu is a quinoa patty as an appetizer. The dish contains quinoa, carrot, celery, onion, egg, olive oil, peppers, and a dash of salt. We chose this as our appetizer because it appears to follow the DASH diet quite well. Quinoa is a whole grain; carrots, celery, onions, and peppers represent the fruits and vegetables category; the egg is not a low–fat dairy product, but the amount of egg in the recipe is very minimal; olive oil is a fat and oil, and the quinoa patties are lightly salted in an attempt to keep flavor yet stay under the recommended daily limit. It includes a garish red backdrop. It also features something that looks like a classic bottle of Heinz ketchup, but actually are horizontally sliced tomatoes bundled on top of each other in the shape of the classic ketchup bottle. Ketchup is made in a factory and by any means isn't 'grown'. However, the text below the picture reads otherwise. By this, the marketers transform a sugary condiment into a wholesome, raw ingredient. Only until the 17th century did pizza achieved a local popularity among visitors to Naples who would went into the poorer sections to taste the dish made by men called "pizzaioli." Pizza started to gain more popularity, but was not at the level where it was countrywide because no major figures had took notice of the new dish to promote it. Those in favour consider that they are advantageous for humans, those against believe that it is detrimental for human consumption and altering the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Conversely, The Flavr Savour tomato possesses supressed activity of the enzyme polygalacturonase. The suppression contributes to the fruits ability to stay harder for longer allowing it to stay on the vine. This suppression allows the tomato to develop its natural flavours and ripen as it stays on the vine for a longer time period. This flavour saving process lead to the products name "The Flavr Savr". The Flavr Savr tomato is created through the use of antisense gene technologies to decrease the polygalacturonase activity. The kan(r) is a gene from the bacteria Escherichia coli, alongside with the gene from the Flavr Savr tomato they are inserted into a plasmid that resembles a round ring of DNA. These plasmids are further inserted into a group of normal tomato cells in a medium growth that contains the kanamycin antibiotic Engel 7. This process produces the APH (3') II substance that allows the cell to become resistant to the antibiotic. This process is used to identify the genetically transformed genes. The gene of the Flavr Savr initially coded for a strand of RNA, which was the reverse strand of RNA that occurs in a natural tomato plant. The original RNA strand contains the enzyme polygalacturonase degrading the cell wall, making the fruit soft. The RNA strand made from the Flavr Savr gene binds to the polygalacturonase RNA in a process to cancel each other out as demonstrated in figure 1. The antisense gene is a ... Alex Cottam Tomatoes are edible fruits of Solanum lycopersicum , More commonly known as the tomato plant. The plant originated in central America. Tomatoes are used in many dishes across the globe but were first used in mexico. Tomatoes are grown in temperate climates around the world however more hardy strains have been produced meaning some can survive at lower temperatures however to maximise yield lower temperatures are not ideal. In cooler areas of the globe they can be grown in greenhouses. They grow ,depending on the strain, anywhere from one metre tall to 3 metres tall although "bush" variates have the maximum yield. Being so tall the plant often cannot support itself as they have weak stems therefore support is required ie canes, stakes etc. The tomato plant is a perennial (grows back each year) in its native climate and grown as an annual (only survives one year then dies from lower temperatures) in temperate climates. Temperature is one of the limiting factors of plant growth so is one of the key factors to achieve a high yield. In order to keep it at these temperatures a greenhouse should be used or they should be planted in their native climate however a greenhouse is more ideal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
