The Works Of William Shakespeare And Sir Philip Sidney
Edmund Spenser was a notorious English poet known for writing the long allegorical poem The Faerie Queen. Born into a family of very little
wealth he was enrolled into the Merchant Taylors' grammar school. He later went on to study at the University of Cambridge where he received his
Bachelor of Arts degree in 1573. The time he spent at Cambridge was undoubtly very crucial for the acquisition of his wide knowledge not only of the
Latin and some of the Greek classics but also of the Italian, French, and English Literature of his own and earlier times. Without the Roman epic poet
Virgil's Aeneid, the 15th–century Italian Ludovico Ariosto's Orlando furioso, and, later, Torquato Tasso's Gerusalemme liberata (1581), Spenser could
not have written his heroic, or epic, poem The Faerie Queene. The corpus of Spenser can be discussed in the context of the works of William
Shakespeare and Sir Philip Sidney. The three share an influence in the same popular Renaissance literary genre, Pastoral, which can be depicted as
an idealized vision of a simpler, rural life and a longing for a lost world of innocence. Much happened in the time of the Renaissance, including
Reformation and an epidemic so it made sense to want to write about less complex ways of living as a way to "escape" reality.
In The Faerie Queen, Spenser writes with the intent to show young men what better virtues to cultivate in their lives. He does an excellent job doing
this by his use of symbolism and descriptive imagery.

Astrophel And Sidney Critical Analysis
Sir Philip Sidney, who has written poetry, prose and critical essays, is known as the most influential writer of the Elizabethan period. Author of
Arcadia, Astrophil and Stella, and The Defence of Poesy, Sir Philip Sidney was born in 1554 and died in 1586. Grandson of the Duke of
Northumberland, Sidney grew up with a strong motherly influence, given his father's absences. Due to this fact, it is believed that he gained a unique
understanding of the womanly world, as evidenced in many of his poems.
According to Alexander (2010, p. ix), "Sidney was ahead of his time as a writer and he died before his time", meaning that he died at a very young age
– 31 years old, after being injured in combat – when his work was only registered in manuscripts. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Moreover, the sonic effect of the assonance in lines 12–13 promotes a hypnotic sensation. All these sound elements reiterate the persona's state as if
running around in circles, not being able to understand the beloved's indifference. This connection between love and pain can be sensed throughout
the poem. When it comes to analyzing the poem's content, the first image that calls our attention is the personification of the moon, a heavenly body
that is capable of feeling the same love pain as the persona feels. The sequence of questions in the last sestet also compose an interesting symbol:
since Astrophil cannot really comprehend Stella's behavior, he keeps asking questions to the moon so as to understand whether all women behave like
that regardless the realm they live in. Therefore, we can understand that the persona projects his own feelings onto the moon. It seems as if the poem
takes place in another world where heavenly bodies can act like human beings: they can fall in love, not be reciprocated, and get

Shakespeare's Use Of Imagery In Sonnet 116, By William...
Imagery is used in almost all literary works. Authors use imagery to keep readers or listeners interested in the story. This is a very common way of
writing and is found a lot in poetry. It is an easy way to have the reader feel more involved in the story. Imagery is used through similes and metaphors
in the works of Shakespeare, Shakespeare, and Spenser.
A lot of William Shakespeare's imagery was used to describe love and how the affected the different relationships. In Sonnet 106, " Then in blazon of
sweet beauty's best of hand, of foot, of lip, of brow, I see their antique pen would have express'd even such a beauty as you master now."
(Shakespeare 275). In this quote, Shakespeare goes into detail about how this one particular girl has an unique beauty. Ha also explains how he has
never seen such a beauty like hers. Shakespeare also says in Sonnet 116, " Let me not to the marriage of true minds admit impediments. Love is not
love which alters when it alteration finds, bends with the remover to remove."(Shakespeare 276). The first sentence of the quote is basically
explaining that not all marriages of relationships come easy, they all have obstacles. The second of the quote is explaining that love doesn't changed
when something in the relationship changes, it will stay the say no matter what. Shakespeare is known for imagery in terms of explaining love and
relationships, it is very well represented in a lot of his sonnets.
Edmund Spenser is also known for using imagery to

Mary Sidney Herbert's Translation Of Palm 52 Sparknotes
Nearly every bible verse has been translated repeatedly by countless individuals over the thousands of years since the bible was written. Each
translation is more interesting than the last, especially with Mary Sidney Herbert's translation of Psalm 52. The poem describes a person's behavior
to be deplorable because he cheated and lied to make his name and did not wait for God to give him success with honor. Herbert, however, adds a
twist to her translation making it harsher and a bit more personal. The original bible verse uses mild language to get the point across, but Mary Herbert
uses a sharper, harsher language. She wants to and is able to bring closer attention to the overall message of the verse by using an excessive amount of

She uses words such as "lewd" and "loud" (versus the clearly nonexistent description of lies in the original) to describe the untruthful words of another
human being. She also uses different words to convey a broader sense of just how crude this other human's actions are. For example, she uses the word
"knives" rather than the word "razor" to allow the reader to essentially feel the pain brought on by the deceit behind the lies. A knife creates a deeper
wound that takes longer to heal, versus a slit made by a razor that is not as deep and heals faster; therefore, she uses the word knives because she
feels the word razor does not convey the pain well enough. She does this many times throughout the poem. Perhaps all of these subtle changes in
wording indicates a strong stance for a reason.
When reading the poem another times, one can get the sense that this is not simply a longer translation, but rather a revengeful type of writing.
Perhaps when Mary Herbert read this verse at first, it spoke to her because she knew someone who commited the sin the verse argues against. The
poem starts similarly to the original verse, but the words change to reflect a more personal topic. The line "Thinkst thou bear it so?" is inserted in a way
such that she is talking to someone rather than people in general. She also uses the pronoun "my" multiple times, which seems as if she is inserting
herself into the situation. From this, one can infer that perhaps

Sweetness and Power by Sidney Mintz
Sweetness and Power by Sidney Mintz
This part basically focuses on how Mintz tries to tie together the disparate geographies from Northern Europe up to the Caribbean. It will be
documented that Sweetness and Power by Sidney Mintz actually discusses and illuminates the economic and social history revolving around sugar
consumption and production in Europe as well as its colonies, predominantly focusing on England. Mintz examines the structure of power, which made
it probable for sugar to actually turn out to be the first luxury–turned–necessity that propelled a revolution within lifestyle and diet, principally within
the working class in the upsurge of capitalism and Industrial Revolution. Mintz further argues that the contribution of sugar to several developed
countries has been substantial, and that, as a result of the history of sugar in England plus the restructuring within the working class, individuals in
United States and the United Kingdom have actually lost their autonomy towards food . From the novel we will realize that Mintz essentially attempts
to bring together the disparate geographies basically from Northern Europe up to Caribbean. This has purely been due to the production of sugar in
Europe. It has resulted to trades between the neighboring countries which has increased the interactions between the people through trade contracts.
This evident as Mintz argues that "The development of plantation production beyond the "Americas" represented the

Sidney Bechet Impact On Jazz
From Bechet to Marsalis: The Evolution of Jazz
Jazz: An overview
In the 20th century, Jazz was one of the most expressive forms of music around, as it was just starting out and was born in a time where victims of
oppression were beginning to stand up and rebel. In comparison to classical music, Jazz is a very new genre of music. It's evolution is vividly evident in
it's contrast of instrumentation, dynamics, and the introduction of modal jazz which I will discuss later on in this essay. One of the first jazz virtuoso's
that appeared and had a significant influence on jazz, was Sidney Bechet, on clarinet and saxophone.

With this popularity, jazz musicians decided to form larger ensembles, known as "Big Bands". These big bands would typically consist of trumpets,
saxophones, trombones, drums, bass (or double bass), piano and would usually have a soloist. These bands were like the symphony orchestras of
jazz. A few of the most popular big bands would've been led by Chick Webb, Paul Whiteman, Glenn Miller, Ted Lewis and an all
–female big band
named "Helen Lewis and her all–girl jazz syncopaters". The popularity of these groups was astounding. They were selling out venues everywhere
and going on regular tours across America. These bands would have some impeccably skilled jazz musicians as soloist's also such as Bix
Beiderbecke and Dizzy Gillespie. One big band that stood out from this era would be Benny Goodman's big band. Their popularity was almost
unbelievable. Benny himself was widely known as the "King of Swing" and had some of the most dedicated fans at the time. Radio was the most
important aspect for Benny as his recordings would be heard by a wider audience. This ultimately led to the crazy fan–base he gained. For example, in
their performance at the Stanley Theatre, it was reported that most of the audience were dancing down the aisles to the music. People had never
experienced music like this before. It was almost like an explosion of life and freedom, caused by a wave of new and exciting music. Goodman's

Sir Philip Sidney and an Analysis of Six of his Poems Essay
Everyone in this world starts somewhere, thousands of new beginnings each day, a new story drafted every moment. A story can be written, told by
mouth, or acted out, but it is the original telling, the occurrence of such a story, which remains the most engaging and interesting, leading to the
stories that will be told long after the characters are gone. With each birth a new story begins, with each achievement the plot of a story is
established, and with each death a story is passed on. Some people create more stories than their own, weaving their words into a tale of their
choosing. All of these stories are equally significant, some more popular than others are told often, some are shared only amongst few, and yet these

While traveling he viewed the massacre of St. Bartholomew's Day, an extremely gory group of assassinations that resulted in many deaths, resulting
in the reinforcement of his protestant beliefs. After returning from his adventures through Frankfurt, Vienna, Paris and Venice, he was recalled to
court by the Queen. He joined court upon his homecoming in 1575, and later became known as one of the ideal gentlemen of the time period, his
chivalrous manner and personality that of the perfect courtier. He was a great favorite and became greatly respected in his position. In 1576 Sidney
succeeded his father as cupbearer to Queen Elizabeth, which was a purely ceremonial duty, and a year later the Queen gave him a diplomatic mission
of traveling to the German Emperor and the Prince of Orange to present Elizabeth's condolences on the death of their fathers. He was to find out if
they would be open to the formation of a Protestant alliance against Catholic Spain. This mission as a diplomat was not as successful as he had hoped
because he came back far more hopeful and optimistic than the other diplomats, and the Queen was not as confident in his reply as in the replies from
other representatives. Philip continued in politics and entertained foreign visitors and diplomats. Philip was quite intelligent, and was able to discuss
chemistry, science, art, literature, poetry, law, religion, history, politics and military with ease.

instance i am a carolina fan and everybody loves Justin Faulk some think he is one of the best in the league for D. However last night against the Red
Wings he had a –3 +/– ratio, that leads me to believe that Hanifan who was drafted by the Canes is leading up to be a better player than Faulk.
Hanifan who was +1 +/– ratio had an assist as the game progressed. Crosby who has been playing with many very good players in the NHL is still
the best, his line is almost never scored on and they get more SOG (shots on goal) than all the other lines. Shots leads to dominating the game,
dominating the games leads to smarter hockey and more enthusiastic players. Yes Crosby is the best in the game." quotes a user from

Sidney Lumet's Fail Safe
Events in American history are often distorted and misunderstood, which lead people to wonder about the justness of the international confrontation.
The American public is one of the major driving forces during war times and without their support, the tide of the war can change drastically. Sidney
Lumet directed the movie Fail Safe, which has multiple instances where a verdict to act, despite the prewar conditions, was hard to delineate between a
just and unjust judgement. Of all the instances in the movie, the decisions made compelled the viewer to question the ideas the political leaders were
making, just or unjust. Further, leaders caused the viewer to wonder what they were truly fighting for. The justness of multiple decisions in the movie
were brought into question regarding the just cause, proportionality, and last resort of causing a war.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Just War Theory divides the morality of war into two parts. A war can be tried twice, first pertaining to why the nation decides to go to war, and
secondly with how the nation actions are during the fighting (Walzer 21). The first part of war called jus ad bellem, translated to the justice of war,
provides strict guiding principles with whether the war is just or unjust in the intentions of going to war. The second part of war jus in bello
correlates to appropriate conduct while in war (Cook 27). Being just in jus ad bellum does not necessarily mean that jus in bello is just. Likewise,
justness in jus in bello does not demand jus ad bellum to be just. War can start in a just way but be fought unjustly and the reverse, can start unjustly but

The Physicality Of Love In Astrophil And Stella By Sir...
The poets of the Renaissance, however, did not neglect the physicality of love, and wrote about passion in several of their sonnets. As critic Robert H.
Deming asserts, commenting John Donne's Elegies, "Love of a celestial kind is love of the virtuous and beautiful woman ... who is the first step up the
Platonic ladder to love of an absolute, static kind. But this love is fit only for souls ... hardly fit for bodies" (396). An example of the importance of
physical desire is given in the sequence of 108 sonnets of "Astrophil and Stella" by Sir Philip Sidney. The protagonists of the sonnets are Astrophil, a
young boy, and Stella, the girl he loves. Her name refers to a celestial dimension since the word "stella" means "star" in English. Nevertheless, ... Show

These poems are an invitation to seize the moment that men make to women. Readers need not be surprised, for also the theme of carpe diem was
very popular among ancient authors, like Horace and Virgil. Therefore, Renaissance poets, with their classical taste, were fond of this theme and
used it in their sonnets. Strange as it may seem, the poems of carpe diem, too, talk about love, but they abandon the idealized aspect of love as a
yearning of the soul for higher realities, and mainly focus on passion and sex. These literary works are also significant because they give an insight of
a male–centric society, where the man is not a courteous knight anymore, but he is a person with deep bodily instincts that want to satisfy his
appetites. One of the best examples of these sonnets is "To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time" by Robert Herrick. The key part of the poem is the
first stanza, when the poet tells the virgins that "this same flower that smiles today / Tomorrow will be dying" (757). He suggests using their time
while they still can and profiting of "that age ... when youth and blood are warmer"

Sidney Bechet Similar to Louis Armstrong a man named Sidney Bechet was a jazz musician who was among the best of New Orleans Jazz.
Bechet was born into a middle class Creole family that accepted music as a huge part of their lives. Omar Bechet was Sidney's father; he was a
flute player who played music as a pass time. Sidney had four brothers who also played instruments, Leonard was one of his brothers, Leonard played
the trombone and also the clarinet. Sidney took on an interest in the clarinet and Leonard passed on his clarinet to Sidney (The Bechet Society. 1997).
When Sidney Bechet first began playing clarinet, he would perform quadrilles, waltzes, and overall polite music meant for the middle class. Bechet
many times would ditch class when he was a child to become proficient at his instrument and even started to play in local jazz groups. As Bechet grew
older, he began playing more syncopated pieces in brothels and dance halls. Bechet performed and impressed Bunk Johnson, a legend, who played
cornet. Bechet then joined the "Eagle Band", a group composed of Johnson and other musicians of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

An Analysis Of Astrophil And Stella By Sir Philip Sidney
How can we record a love so deep it lasts a life time? In Astrophil and Stella, Sir Philip Sidney does just this, creating a chronological sequence of
108 sonnets, depicting the longing and futile adoration of the speaker Astrophil towards his love interest Stella. It has been widely noted that the
sonnets may be a reflection of Sidney's own life, after his infamous love of Penelope Devereux following their meeting in 1575, which is said to have
lasted through her marriage to another man, and up until his untimely death in 1583. Sonnet 31, the sonnet I will be mainly discussing in this essay, is
undeniably the most famous of Sidney's sonnets. This sonnet utilises Sidney's favourite Italian rhyme scheme – ABBA CDCD EE, paired with his
preferred Italian sonnet style, including an octave, followed by a sestet, and a turn in line 8. This writing style not native to the English Language
displays Sidney's mastery in conveying his emotional anguish – a skill which elevates him as a loved and dearly missed poet of the Elizabethan era.
The poem employs iambic pentameter, showing Sidney's marriage of typically English meter with a continental writing style, which creates a
beautifully complex narrative of a pining love. The strict meter creates a steady and somewhat lyrical rhyme scheme, which adds a romantic essence of
sound to the sonnet, almost as if Astrophil is attempting to serenade Stella throughout the collection of poetry, unfortunately, to no avail.Sonnet 31

How Does Sir Philip Sidney Use Astrophel And Stella
Sir Philip Sidney was one of the most known English poets in the Elizabethan era of time. Astrophel and Stella is said to have most likely been
composed in the 1580s. It is considered an English sonnet sequence that overall contains 108 sonnets and 11 songs in total. The name Astrophel
comes from Greek origin translating to star lover, ad Stella is originated from Latin which means star as well. In other words Astrophel is the star
lover, and Stella is his star. Some people even say Sidney wrote this about his own personal love life first about Lady Penelope Devereux, and later on
Lady Rich. In Sonnet 87 Sidney express his love for Stella. He goes on to say, "Stella! food of my thoughts, heart of my heart", in other words he is
saying she

Sidney Defends The Worth Of Poetry
Sidney defends the worth of poetry by presenting us with a long defense written to William Ponsonby, a very popular publisher of the Elizabethan era.
Sidney breaks his argument down into eight sections, each one arguing another point as to why poetry is worthy and should not be thought of as
sub–par literature. His arguments are thorough, leaving no gaps between thoughts, and very persuasive in both content and style. I believe his
argument is both successful and thorough, covering everything that has been critiqued about poesy in the ages before this work was written.
Sidney opens with the first section called the Exordium in lines 1–50. It is significant to note that it was printed several years after his death,
communicating the aristocratic air we get from him, manliness, courtier, advisor, masculine roles that Sidney is hinting at comparing himself to a
horse master. The introduction here of his argument is lighthearted and funny, "if I had not been a piece of a logician before I came to him I think he
would have persuaded me to have wished myself a horse" (27–30). This show of establishing his own good character through Ethos, pathos the
applying to peoples emotions as well as William Ponsonby's emotions, as this is whom the argument is addressed to. Sidney's thesis is visible in lines
43–51 where he says that he will bring forth the evidence to prove that poetry is a worthy literary medium and that without poetry we do not have
history or philosophy.

Who is Sidney Poitier?
Sidney Poitier Sidney Poitier is an African American actor who helped break the color barrier through acting. He proved that anyone could

barely survived the first months of his life due to premature birth, his family loved him very much. However, his family was very poor, and his

Sidney Bechet's Major Accomplishments
Sidney Bechet was one of many fantastic up and coming jazz musicians in the Roaring Twenties. He started on the clarinet, but eventually became
one of the first performers to adopt the soprano saxophone as a main instrument, as well as one of the first to improvise with the swing style of jazz.
In addition, he was one of the first artists to record using a multitrack which was a way of recording where you would play back the track from one
instrument while you recorded with another instrument and continued this process until you had all of the instruments you wanted. These strides
helped Bechet stand out from other musicians as he progressed through his career. Bechet grew up in a musical household and toured with popular

Sir Philip Sidney : The Faerie Queene
Sir Philip Sidney was among the few prominent Renaissance poets of England, yet one of the only poets who was of nobility. He was a knight in
Queen Elizabeth's court, and a very adventurous and thrill–seeking knight at that. Sidney desired heroic action and was always looking for some
conflict he could take part in, which in turn made Elizabeth especially cautious about him. In addition to being a knight, Sidney was also passionate
about writing, literature and learning, and inspired future authors, like Edmund Spenser who later wrote "The Faerie Queene." As a member of the
court, Sidney was busy with diplomatic and political affairs. In 1577 he was sent to deliver messages to the newly crowned Emperor, and on his way
back to England met William of Orange, the leader of the Dutch revolt against the Spanish. Upon his arrival back in England, Sidney wrote a
lengthy defense of his father's administration in Ireland and a play titled "Lady of the May" which celebrated Queen Elizabeth's May Day visit to
one of her subjects. Sidney also began to acquaint himself with scholars such as Gabriel Harvey and Edmund Spenser. The next year, Spenser
dedicated his work titled "The Shepherd 's Calendar" to Sidney. Within the next year, yet another work was dedicated to Sidney, but this one he did
not like so much. It was called "Schoole of Abuse" by Stephen Gosson, a work that was a bitter attack on theater and English dramas. It was this year

The Defence Of Poesy By Sir Philip Sidney
Sir Philip Sidney argued for the positive value of imaginative literature in The Defence of Poesy, in which he claimed that literature should 'teach and
delight'. The influence of Sidney's claim can be seen in John Skelton's work 'The Bowge of Courte' and Thomas Nashe's 'The Choise of Valentines'.
Skelton's 'The Bowge of Court', has been described as 'a fifteenth–century dream vision built on the model of the morality play' and 'The Choise of
Valentines' as 'an Ovidian erotic poem', which elaborates 'a tale of impotence and erotic substitution.' While both poems are rich in their differences,
due to the satiric and erotic genres, they share the similarity of belonging to a very specific time. By examining the origins d interpreting Sidney's
presentation of the phrase 'teach and delight', the ways in which Skelton and Nashe's texts maintain Sidney's claim can be discussed. Skelton teaches
through 'The Bowge of Court', by employing allegory as a way to critique the court, and uses satire as a form of poetic council. Nashe teaches in 'The
Choise of Valentines' by presenting his text and an example of originality and satirising the idea of performance. Skelton delights in his text by using
the symbol of the ship as an ornament added to the truth of the poem. Nashe delights in his text by the freshness of language used and the originality of
his poetry.
Sidney uses the phrase 'teach and delight' consistently throughout The Defence of Poesy, which he regards as the design of

Sweetness And Power By Sidney Mintz
Sweetness and Power by Sidney Mintz explains the causes and effects of the use of sugar. Throughout the book, Mintz emphasizes on how sugar had
begun as a luxury for all riches until it became a necessity for all people. The consumption of sugar has become quite a sensation within the European
countries, particularly Britain. From the analysis in the book, Britain was one of the countries that consumed the most sugar during the seventeenth
century. During the evaluation and analysis of sugar, Mintz describes the consumption of sugar to be a process that was quite difficult to
understand as it was unsure why there was such a huge consumption of sugar. During the first sixteenth and seventeenth century, sugar was known
as a luxury for the riches. According to Mintz, sugar was just a luxury that was not available to the poor and was limited only to those who could
afford the sugar (84). It explains that the consumption of sugar took time to be embedded into a nation's society. With the use of sugar it mostly
took the job of sweetening beverages that were bitter, such as tea, coffee, and chocolate (108). However, sugar was mostly used as a sweetener for
tea unlike for chocolate and coffee as tea would taste the same no matter the amount of sugar (112). It reveals the effect of sugar as many rich
individuals begin to use sugar as a sweetener for beverages which increases the consumption of sugar in daily life for British people. With it being a
luxury, only the rich individuals

Theme Of Sidney Carton
A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens is one of the most memorable novels in the history of English Literature. The novel starts with the famous
lines "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times" ( Dickens 11). The novel depicts London, England and Paris, France in later years of the
seventeenth century. It presents to us the confusion, the political one that surrounded the two nations during that period of time. The novel is rich in
meaning and significance and Dickens has very skilfully integrated various themes. Dickens' genius of characterisation is fully evident in this novel. In
this paper, an attempt has been made to analyse the character of Sidney Carton in the light of the observation that he has been used by Dickens to bring
out the theme of Resurrection in the novel.
"It is far, far better thing that I do than I have ever done. It is a far, far better rest that I have than I have ever known."( Dickens 367). These beautiful,
touching words has been put by the author in the mouth of Sidney Carton, our hero at the very end moments of his life. He has throughout been an
alcoholic and apathetic man. Although he's a man blessed with intelligentsia which is evident from his being the mind behind the success of Stryver as

Critical Appreciation Of Sonnet 47
The determined female monarch, Queen Elizabeth I, was known for creating a cultural of love in England during her reign. Her love for her people
and devotion to their protection was symbolized by her commitment to remain chaste throughout her life. In return, she was said to be well liked by
her people. This relationship of love between Queen Elizabeth I and her courtiers provides for a unique power balance in Elizabethan courts and
intertwines with the popular practice of writing love sonnets in 15th century England. Poets wrote deeply romantic and emotion filled sonnets that had
underlying political messages, like those of Phillip Sidney. Phillip Sidney's love sonnets, as evident in sonnet 47 from Astrophil and Stella, symbolize
and comment on the balance of power in court politics and the uneasiness of Elizabethan society about the rule of a female. Sonnet 47 illustrates the
torment and inner struggle that a man experience when the woman he loves, Stella, does not return his love. This plot of betrayal of love is common
in sonnet writing. The speaker is frustrated and contemplates what to do about his love. It is written in choppy verses that symbolize the sheer
anguish and struggle that the speaker is experiencing. There is also a major shift in tone in the middle of the sonnet. The first half of the sonnet is
written in a series of questions as the speaker reflects on how he got into the situation that he is in. The questions possess strong imagery of slavery with

Shakespeare And Sidney : A Dialogue Of Limited Desire
Shakespeare and Sidney: A Dialogue of Limited Desire
In perhaps the most famous and well–known of Shakespeare's 154 sonnets, the speaker opens this poem with a question: "Shall I compare thee to a
summer's day?" (1). It is a typical sonnet in that it has a rhyme scheme, is 14 lines long, and in iambic pentameter. On the surface, this is simply a
praise of the beauty of the speaker's beloved; he is not like the unpleasant heat of the summer, he is agreeable and eternal. This subject shall never fade
nor stray like summer or any other love which sometime decline. Like a lyrical poem, in "Sonnet 18" there is a strong use of imagery, a sense of trying
to catch the intensity of a fleeting moment, describing the passion one feels for someone so beautiful. It is a very personal tale. The speaker seems to
be enamored with his subject–a fair and youthful lad who is addressed on many occasions in Shakespeare's repertoire of sonnets. Though readers do
not receive any physical description pertaining to the youth, according to the speaker he is fairer and more beautiful than any summer's day. At the
very beginning, the speaker asks "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?" (1) yet, ironically, the sonnet never gives any comparisons between the
two. At all. In fact, he only contrasts them. So, would it be just or reasonable to compare an Adonis–type of subject to the fleeting, hot, never–lasting
summer? According to the narrator, certainly not. As death for the youth is sadly

Compare and Contrast the Ways Philip Sidney's Astrophil...
Introduction
In the late sixteenth and the seventeenth century, new ideas and motives in arts, inspired by the past but concerned with new concepts, appeared.
Building on a courtly love, some writers and poets attempted to discuss the nature of love by commenting on gender issues and sexuality (MacArthur,
1989). Thus, love conventions, based on a passion or an unrequited love, would change, challenging social norms and discussing male and female
sexualities. On the one hand, the authors explore male sexualities and a desire for a woman. Phillip Sidney's narrator is a lustful, musing about his
chosen woman, her body and a sexual intercourse. Milton's character Comus resembles a similar character when attempting to seduce the Lady, and ...

This male desire is given devious and egotistic connotations, because it overcomes reason, and becomes preoccupied with Stella's body. Stella, on the
other hand, is personified Love and 'Virtue but that body grant to us' (AS, sonnet 52.14). However, Astrophil remains lustful, and when he is denied her
body, he views her as 'too too cruel' (AS, sonnet 2.3–4), and becomes resentful.
John Milton: Comus, A Mask presented at Ludlow Castle (1634)
Milton's mask, presenting notions of chastity and a rampant sexuality, uses Comus, a devious character, to address the issue of physical desire.
Comus, a passionate and sexual necromancer, captures the Lady, brings her to his pleasure palace, and attempts to seduce her through magic and a
persuasion to 'be not coy' (C, p.44). Similarly to Sidney's poet, Comus experiences a narcissistic temptation of a bodily pleasure, which makes him
more emotional than his female victim. By using a phallic symbol, his wand, he enchants the Lady, and offers her food and drink to increase her
appetite and her desire. Her serve the drink in a cup, symbolically representing a well of sexual pleasures. Thus, his idea of passion is of natural
impulses, projected through the body rather than the mind. But the Lady, just like Stella, recognises a higher nature of her virtues, and thus she defeats
the Comus. Hence, the two characters represent two opposites: body and mind, desire and rationality, and lust and morality. The author

achieve many prestigious awards. Including the greatest award one is able to attain in hockey,
Lord Stanley's Cup, in the 2008–09 Season. Crosby was then the youngest captain to ever win the Stanley Cup in NHL history. Other great
achievement's Crosby has attained is the Art Ross trophy, which is awarded to the player with the most scoring points in a season. Another award he
won that same season, in the 2006–07 season, was the Hart Trophy (Fitzpatrick). The final and most likely greatest achievement Crosby has made, is
being the second youngest captain in NHL history. He did hold the reign of youngest Captain for 6 years until, Gabriel Landeskog was named
captain for the Colorado Avalanche. Landeskog was only 11 days younger than Crosby when named, but he still took the title of youngest captain in
NHL history (Sadowski). These achievements have supported reasons why Crosby is better than Gretzky. With all the evidence supporting Crosby's
case proves that Crosby is overall a better and a stronger player than Gretzky. Since this is accurate and supported through evidence, Crosby can now

"Choking" is a sports term used to refer to a team who does well during the regular season, but when it gets to the time when everything matters,
they fail to live up to expectations. Sidney Crosby, on the other hand, has two Stanley Cups under his belt and by the looks of it, he may be
winning another win this year. When both the players joined the league they got off to an immediate start in points. In Ovechkin's first year he
put up 106 points and Crosby put up 102 points. The players have been pretty even throughout the years, stats wise. Crosby has missed quite a bit
of his potential playing career due to injuries, many of which are concussions. As of the moment, Ovechkin has one more year in the league that
Crosby and leads the two with a total of 1035 NHL career points. Crosby, on the other hand, has 1027 career points. Crosby also holds the title of
the man to reach the 1000 point milestone in as little games as possible. In the goals category, Ovechkin leads by a tremendous margin. Sometimes
this is a good thing, but if you look at his goals to points ratio, he doesn't impress in the assists area compared to Crosby. Ovechkin has scored 558
goals while in the league, Crosby only having scored 382. Crosby, on the other hand, has 645 assists while Ovechkin only has 477. Every time you

Sidney Poitier is best known for being the first black actor to win an Academy Award in 1964 ("Biography"). Although he was a great actor, director,
and revolutionary for his time, he was more than just another star on film. He would pave the way for the black theater community and also create
some of the most challenging interracial movies questioning racial equality later in his career. Born in Miami Florida on February 20th, 1927; Sidney
Poitier grew up in the Bahamas and later moved to New York to pursue his dreams of theatre ('About"). Sidney Poitier not only grew up in a hard time
for black Americans, his introduction to life was extremely poverty–stricken. Although his parents lived in the Bahamas, Sidney Poitier was born in
Miami, when his parents were visiting on a trip to sell tomatoes from their small farm (Goudsouzian, 8). When a child is born on the United States soil,
the child is automatically an American citizen. This happenstance would prove to be the single most important thing later in his life. It is what allowed
him to move to New York and attend theater school.
Being a black actor wasn't easy. Sidney Poitier had to work twice as hard for the roles and make sure every performance was perfect, However he
did stand for what he believed in, and only took roles in which he could envision his own sense of self. Whenever a press conference was held the
reporters would grill him about current events that had to do with the black population. Usually the

Sidney Love Sonnet
Valuing Power During the Elizabethan Era, the English thrived in the ways of culture. Literature, poetry, theater, and music all saw tremendous
advancement. Love sonnets became particularly popular due to the opportunity they offered their authors to express their most alluring desires, while
sticking to the strict guidelines of a sonnet. One particular 16th century writer, Sir Philip Sidney, wrotelove sonnets that followed the relationship of the
desire–ridden Astrophil and the object of his affection, Stella. Poetry at this time often had political or religious influences, and Sidney's work was no
exception. Focusing specifically on Sonnet 69, Sidney metaphorically relates a personal experience to a political gain, suggesting that ... Show more

There was constant speculation over whether or not a woman was fit to rule, so a man no doubt would have stolen not only her power, but the
people's respect as well. In order to understand the political agenda present in the sonnet, one must notice the power Elizabeth I would have lost with
a marriage, versus the power that Astrophil figuratively gained through obtaining Stella's love. In order for suitors to gain power from either woman,
the women had to have had power for them to acquire. Similar to Queen Elizabeth, Stella is portrayed as a woman of power and appears to be highly
sought after. Her love was an indescribably, wonderful prize to the speaker, just as Queen Elizabeth's hand in marriage would have been quite an
accomplishment for any nobleman. Words such as "nobler", "kings", "covenants", and "monarchs" are all present in the poem, not only alluding to the
political agenda present in the work, but possibly Stella's societal position. Elizabeth I was showered with ravishing gifts and compliments routinely by
her courtiers. These men of her court sought to woo and impress the unattainable queen. This need to grasp the queen's attention also pertains to the
relationship between writing love sonnets and court politics as a whole under Queen Elizabeth. The frustration that follows loving someone and that
love not being reciprocated was a vital aspect of much of the love poetry at the time. This popular

Shakespeare, Spenser, and Sidney: Influences in Renaissance Literature

  • 1. The Works Of William Shakespeare And Sir Philip Sidney Edmund Spenser was a notorious English poet known for writing the long allegorical poem The Faerie Queen. Born into a family of very little wealth he was enrolled into the Merchant Taylors' grammar school. He later went on to study at the University of Cambridge where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1573. The time he spent at Cambridge was undoubtly very crucial for the acquisition of his wide knowledge not only of the Latin and some of the Greek classics but also of the Italian, French, and English Literature of his own and earlier times. Without the Roman epic poet Virgil's Aeneid, the 15th–century Italian Ludovico Ariosto's Orlando furioso, and, later, Torquato Tasso's Gerusalemme liberata (1581), Spenser could not have written his heroic, or epic, poem The Faerie Queene. The corpus of Spenser can be discussed in the context of the works of William Shakespeare and Sir Philip Sidney. The three share an influence in the same popular Renaissance literary genre, Pastoral, which can be depicted as an idealized vision of a simpler, rural life and a longing for a lost world of innocence. Much happened in the time of the Renaissance, including Reformation and an epidemic so it made sense to want to write about less complex ways of living as a way to "escape" reality. In The Faerie Queen, Spenser writes with the intent to show young men what better virtues to cultivate in their lives. He does an excellent job doing this by his use of symbolism and descriptive imagery. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Astrophel And Sidney Critical Analysis Sir Philip Sidney, who has written poetry, prose and critical essays, is known as the most influential writer of the Elizabethan period. Author of Arcadia, Astrophil and Stella, and The Defence of Poesy, Sir Philip Sidney was born in 1554 and died in 1586. Grandson of the Duke of Northumberland, Sidney grew up with a strong motherly influence, given his father's absences. Due to this fact, it is believed that he gained a unique understanding of the womanly world, as evidenced in many of his poems. According to Alexander (2010, p. ix), "Sidney was ahead of his time as a writer and he died before his time", meaning that he died at a very young age – 31 years old, after being injured in combat – when his work was only registered in manuscripts. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Moreover, the sonic effect of the assonance in lines 12–13 promotes a hypnotic sensation. All these sound elements reiterate the persona's state as if running around in circles, not being able to understand the beloved's indifference. This connection between love and pain can be sensed throughout the poem. When it comes to analyzing the poem's content, the first image that calls our attention is the personification of the moon, a heavenly body that is capable of feeling the same love pain as the persona feels. The sequence of questions in the last sestet also compose an interesting symbol: since Astrophil cannot really comprehend Stella's behavior, he keeps asking questions to the moon so as to understand whether all women behave like that regardless the realm they live in. Therefore, we can understand that the persona projects his own feelings onto the moon. It seems as if the poem takes place in another world where heavenly bodies can act like human beings: they can fall in love, not be reciprocated, and get ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Shakespeare's Use Of Imagery In Sonnet 116, By William... Imagery is used in almost all literary works. Authors use imagery to keep readers or listeners interested in the story. This is a very common way of writing and is found a lot in poetry. It is an easy way to have the reader feel more involved in the story. Imagery is used through similes and metaphors in the works of Shakespeare, Shakespeare, and Spenser. A lot of William Shakespeare's imagery was used to describe love and how the affected the different relationships. In Sonnet 106, " Then in blazon of sweet beauty's best of hand, of foot, of lip, of brow, I see their antique pen would have express'd even such a beauty as you master now." (Shakespeare 275). In this quote, Shakespeare goes into detail about how this one particular girl has an unique beauty. Ha also explains how he has never seen such a beauty like hers. Shakespeare also says in Sonnet 116, " Let me not to the marriage of true minds admit impediments. Love is not love which alters when it alteration finds, bends with the remover to remove."(Shakespeare 276). The first sentence of the quote is basically explaining that not all marriages of relationships come easy, they all have obstacles. The second of the quote is explaining that love doesn't changed when something in the relationship changes, it will stay the say no matter what. Shakespeare is known for imagery in terms of explaining love and relationships, it is very well represented in a lot of his sonnets. Edmund Spenser is also known for using imagery to ... • 4. Mary Sidney Herbert's Translation Of Palm 52 Sparknotes Nearly every bible verse has been translated repeatedly by countless individuals over the thousands of years since the bible was written. Each translation is more interesting than the last, especially with Mary Sidney Herbert's translation of Psalm 52. The poem describes a person's behavior to be deplorable because he cheated and lied to make his name and did not wait for God to give him success with honor. Herbert, however, adds a twist to her translation making it harsher and a bit more personal. The original bible verse uses mild language to get the point across, but Mary Herbert uses a sharper, harsher language. She wants to and is able to bring closer attention to the overall message of the verse by using an excessive amount of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She uses words such as "lewd" and "loud" (versus the clearly nonexistent description of lies in the original) to describe the untruthful words of another human being. She also uses different words to convey a broader sense of just how crude this other human's actions are. For example, she uses the word "knives" rather than the word "razor" to allow the reader to essentially feel the pain brought on by the deceit behind the lies. A knife creates a deeper wound that takes longer to heal, versus a slit made by a razor that is not as deep and heals faster; therefore, she uses the word knives because she feels the word razor does not convey the pain well enough. She does this many times throughout the poem. Perhaps all of these subtle changes in wording indicates a strong stance for a reason. When reading the poem another times, one can get the sense that this is not simply a longer translation, but rather a revengeful type of writing. Perhaps when Mary Herbert read this verse at first, it spoke to her because she knew someone who commited the sin the verse argues against. The poem starts similarly to the original verse, but the words change to reflect a more personal topic. The line "Thinkst thou bear it so?" is inserted in a way such that she is talking to someone rather than people in general. She also uses the pronoun "my" multiple times, which seems as if she is inserting herself into the situation. From this, one can infer that perhaps ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Sweetness and Power by Sidney Mintz Sweetness and Power by Sidney Mintz This part basically focuses on how Mintz tries to tie together the disparate geographies from Northern Europe up to the Caribbean. It will be documented that Sweetness and Power by Sidney Mintz actually discusses and illuminates the economic and social history revolving around sugar consumption and production in Europe as well as its colonies, predominantly focusing on England. Mintz examines the structure of power, which made it probable for sugar to actually turn out to be the first luxury–turned–necessity that propelled a revolution within lifestyle and diet, principally within the working class in the upsurge of capitalism and Industrial Revolution. Mintz further argues that the contribution of sugar to several developed countries has been substantial, and that, as a result of the history of sugar in England plus the restructuring within the working class, individuals in United States and the United Kingdom have actually lost their autonomy towards food . From the novel we will realize that Mintz essentially attempts to bring together the disparate geographies basically from Northern Europe up to Caribbean. This has purely been due to the production of sugar in Europe. It has resulted to trades between the neighboring countries which has increased the interactions between the people through trade contracts. This evident as Mintz argues that "The development of plantation production beyond the "Americas" represented the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Sidney Bechet Impact On Jazz From Bechet to Marsalis: The Evolution of Jazz Jazz: An overview In the 20th century, Jazz was one of the most expressive forms of music around, as it was just starting out and was born in a time where victims of oppression were beginning to stand up and rebel. In comparison to classical music, Jazz is a very new genre of music. It's evolution is vividly evident in it's contrast of instrumentation, dynamics, and the introduction of modal jazz which I will discuss later on in this essay. One of the first jazz virtuoso's that appeared and had a significant influence on jazz, was Sidney Bechet, on clarinet and saxophone. 20th Century New Orleans Sidney Bechet (1897–1959) Born into a middle class family in New Orleans, Louisiana, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With this popularity, jazz musicians decided to form larger ensembles, known as "Big Bands". These big bands would typically consist of trumpets, saxophones, trombones, drums, bass (or double bass), piano and would usually have a soloist. These bands were like the symphony orchestras of jazz. A few of the most popular big bands would've been led by Chick Webb, Paul Whiteman, Glenn Miller, Ted Lewis and an all –female big band named "Helen Lewis and her all–girl jazz syncopaters". The popularity of these groups was astounding. They were selling out venues everywhere and going on regular tours across America. These bands would have some impeccably skilled jazz musicians as soloist's also such as Bix Beiderbecke and Dizzy Gillespie. One big band that stood out from this era would be Benny Goodman's big band. Their popularity was almost unbelievable. Benny himself was widely known as the "King of Swing" and had some of the most dedicated fans at the time. Radio was the most important aspect for Benny as his recordings would be heard by a wider audience. This ultimately led to the crazy fan–base he gained. For example, in their performance at the Stanley Theatre, it was reported that most of the audience were dancing down the aisles to the music. People had never experienced music like this before. It was almost like an explosion of life and freedom, caused by a wave of new and exciting music. Goodman's performance at ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Sir Philip Sidney and an Analysis of Six of his Poems Essay Everyone in this world starts somewhere, thousands of new beginnings each day, a new story drafted every moment. A story can be written, told by mouth, or acted out, but it is the original telling, the occurrence of such a story, which remains the most engaging and interesting, leading to the stories that will be told long after the characters are gone. With each birth a new story begins, with each achievement the plot of a story is established, and with each death a story is passed on. Some people create more stories than their own, weaving their words into a tale of their choosing. All of these stories are equally significant, some more popular than others are told often, some are shared only amongst few, and yet these stories all... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While traveling he viewed the massacre of St. Bartholomew's Day, an extremely gory group of assassinations that resulted in many deaths, resulting in the reinforcement of his protestant beliefs. After returning from his adventures through Frankfurt, Vienna, Paris and Venice, he was recalled to court by the Queen. He joined court upon his homecoming in 1575, and later became known as one of the ideal gentlemen of the time period, his chivalrous manner and personality that of the perfect courtier. He was a great favorite and became greatly respected in his position. In 1576 Sidney succeeded his father as cupbearer to Queen Elizabeth, which was a purely ceremonial duty, and a year later the Queen gave him a diplomatic mission of traveling to the German Emperor and the Prince of Orange to present Elizabeth's condolences on the death of their fathers. He was to find out if they would be open to the formation of a Protestant alliance against Catholic Spain. This mission as a diplomat was not as successful as he had hoped because he came back far more hopeful and optimistic than the other diplomats, and the Queen was not as confident in his reply as in the replies from other representatives. Philip continued in politics and entertained foreign visitors and diplomats. Philip was quite intelligent, and was able to discuss chemistry, science, art, literature, poetry, law, religion, history, politics and military with ease. In 1579 Sir Philip Sidney ... • 8. Sidney Crosby Research Paper Is Sid the Kid still the best player in the NHL?"Sidney Crosby has the 4th Best points per game in NHL history. He has also won every possible individual and team award that can be won before the age of 25. Crosby makes the players around him better (kunitz and dupuis). Crosby is always improving and is good at many little things such as faceoffs, shootouts, and he always is a good all around player being defensively responsible and his plus minus demonstrates this." Says a user from debate.org. Is Sidney Crosby still the best? It's a yes or no question and there is many debates. My opinion is that he still is, because he's center and still doing very well. But many people say that he isn't and he hogs the ball too much.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I also think this user is right but it's a little over the top. "Now that Connor McDavid, Jack Eichel and Noah Hanifan has been drafted into the league, people will begin shifting their focus more towards them. However last night against the Red Wings he had a –3 +/– ratio, that leads me to believe that Hanifan who was drafted by the Canes is leading up to be a better player than Faulk. Hanifan who was +1 +/– ratio had an assist as the game progressed. Crosby who has been playing with many very good players in the NHL is still the best, his line is almost never scored on and they get more SOG (shots on goal) than all the other lines. Shots leads to dominating the game, dominating the games leads to smarter hockey and more enthusiastic players. Yes Crosby is the best in the game." quotes a user from ... • 9. Sidney Lumet's Fail Safe Events in American history are often distorted and misunderstood, which lead people to wonder about the justness of the international confrontation. The American public is one of the major driving forces during war times and without their support, the tide of the war can change drastically. Sidney Lumet directed the movie Fail Safe, which has multiple instances where a verdict to act, despite the prewar conditions, was hard to delineate between a just and unjust judgement. Of all the instances in the movie, the decisions made compelled the viewer to question the ideas the political leaders were making, just or unjust. Further, leaders caused the viewer to wonder what they were truly fighting for. The justness of multiple decisions in the movie were brought into question regarding the just cause, proportionality, and last resort of causing a war.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Just War Theory divides the morality of war into two parts. A war can be tried twice, first pertaining to why the nation decides to go to war, and secondly with how the nation actions are during the fighting (Walzer 21). The first part of war called jus ad bellem, translated to the justice of war, provides strict guiding principles with whether the war is just or unjust in the intentions of going to war. The second part of war jus in bello correlates to appropriate conduct while in war (Cook 27). Being just in jus ad bellum does not necessarily mean that jus in bello is just. Likewise, justness in jus in bello does not demand jus ad bellum to be just. War can start in a just way but be fought unjustly and the reverse, can start unjustly but be fought ... • 10. The Physicality Of Love In Astrophil And Stella By Sir... The poets of the Renaissance, however, did not neglect the physicality of love, and wrote about passion in several of their sonnets. As critic Robert H. Deming asserts, commenting John Donne's Elegies, "Love of a celestial kind is love of the virtuous and beautiful woman ... who is the first step up the Platonic ladder to love of an absolute, static kind. But this love is fit only for souls ... hardly fit for bodies" (396). An example of the importance of physical desire is given in the sequence of 108 sonnets of "Astrophil and Stella" by Sir Philip Sidney. The protagonists of the sonnets are Astrophil, a young boy, and Stella, the girl he loves. Her name refers to a celestial dimension since the word "stella" means "star" in English. Nevertheless, ... Readers need not be surprised, for also the theme of carpe diem was very popular among ancient authors, like Horace and Virgil. Therefore, Renaissance poets, with their classical taste, were fond of this theme and used it in their sonnets. Strange as it may seem, the poems of carpe diem, too, talk about love, but they abandon the idealized aspect of love as a yearning of the soul for higher realities, and mainly focus on passion and sex. These literary works are also significant because they give an insight of a male–centric society, where the man is not a courteous knight anymore, but he is a person with deep bodily instincts that want to satisfy his appetites. One of the best examples of these sonnets is "To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time" by Robert Herrick. The key part of the poem is the first stanza, when the poet tells the virgins that "this same flower that smiles today / Tomorrow will be dying" (757). He suggests using their time while they still can and profiting of "that age ... when youth and blood are warmer" ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 14. An Analysis Of Astrophil And Stella By Sir Philip Sidney How can we record a love so deep it lasts a life time? In Astrophil and Stella, Sir Philip Sidney does just this, creating a chronological sequence of 108 sonnets, depicting the longing and futile adoration of the speaker Astrophil towards his love interest Stella. It has been widely noted that the sonnets may be a reflection of Sidney's own life, after his infamous love of Penelope Devereux following their meeting in 1575, which is said to have lasted through her marriage to another man, and up until his untimely death in 1583. Sonnet 31, the sonnet I will be mainly discussing in this essay, is undeniably the most famous of Sidney's sonnets. This sonnet utilises Sidney's favourite Italian rhyme scheme – ABBA CDCD EE, paired with his preferred Italian sonnet style, including an octave, followed by a sestet, and a turn in line 8. This writing style not native to the English Language displays Sidney's mastery in conveying his emotional anguish – a skill which elevates him as a loved and dearly missed poet of the Elizabethan era. The poem employs iambic pentameter, showing Sidney's marriage of typically English meter with a continental writing style, which creates a beautifully complex narrative of a pining love. The strict meter creates a steady and somewhat lyrical rhyme scheme, which adds a romantic essence of sound to the sonnet, almost as if Astrophil is attempting to serenade Stella throughout the collection of poetry, unfortunately, to no avail.Sonnet 31 ... • 16. Sidney Defends The Worth Of Poetry Sidney defends the worth of poetry by presenting us with a long defense written to William Ponsonby, a very popular publisher of the Elizabethan era. Sidney breaks his argument down into eight sections, each one arguing another point as to why poetry is worthy and should not be thought of as sub–par literature. His arguments are thorough, leaving no gaps between thoughts, and very persuasive in both content and style. I believe his argument is both successful and thorough, covering everything that has been critiqued about poesy in the ages before this work was written. Sidney opens with the first section called the Exordium in lines 1–50. It is significant to note that it was printed several years after his death, communicating the aristocratic air we get from him, manliness, courtier, advisor, masculine roles that Sidney is hinting at comparing himself to a horse master. The introduction here of his argument is lighthearted and funny, "if I had not been a piece of a logician before I came to him I think he would have persuaded me to have wished myself a horse" (27–30). This show of establishing his own good character through Ethos, pathos the applying to peoples emotions as well as William Ponsonby's emotions, as this is whom the argument is addressed to. Sidney's thesis is visible in lines 43–51 where he says that he will bring forth the evidence to prove that poetry is a worthy literary medium and that without poetry we do not have history or philosophy. • 19. Sir Philip Sidney : The Faerie Queene Sir Philip Sidney was among the few prominent Renaissance poets of England, yet one of the only poets who was of nobility. He was a knight in Queen Elizabeth's court, and a very adventurous and thrill–seeking knight at that. Sidney desired heroic action and was always looking for some conflict he could take part in, which in turn made Elizabeth especially cautious about him. In addition to being a knight, Sidney was also passionate about writing, literature and learning, and inspired future authors, like Edmund Spenser who later wrote "The Faerie Queene." As a member of the court, Sidney was busy with diplomatic and political affairs. In 1577 he was sent to deliver messages to the newly crowned Emperor, and on his way back to England met William of Orange, the leader of the Dutch revolt against the Spanish. Upon his arrival back in England, Sidney wrote a lengthy defense of his father's administration in Ireland and a play titled "Lady of the May" which celebrated Queen Elizabeth's May Day visit to one of her subjects. Sidney also began to acquaint himself with scholars such as Gabriel Harvey and Edmund Spenser. The next year, Spenser dedicated his work titled "The Shepherd 's Calendar" to Sidney. Within the next year, yet another work was dedicated to Sidney, but this one he did not like so much. It was called "Schoole of Abuse" by Stephen Gosson, a work that was a bitter attack on theater and English dramas. It was this year that Sidney wrote his most famous ... • 21. The Defence Of Poesy By Sir Philip Sidney Sir Philip Sidney argued for the positive value of imaginative literature in The Defence of Poesy, in which he claimed that literature should 'teach and delight'. The influence of Sidney's claim can be seen in John Skelton's work 'The Bowge of Courte' and Thomas Nashe's 'The Choise of Valentines'. Skelton's 'The Bowge of Court', has been described as 'a fifteenth–century dream vision built on the model of the morality play' and 'The Choise of Valentines' as 'an Ovidian erotic poem', which elaborates 'a tale of impotence and erotic substitution.' While both poems are rich in their differences, due to the satiric and erotic genres, they share the similarity of belonging to a very specific time. By examining the origins d interpreting Sidney's presentation of the phrase 'teach and delight', the ways in which Skelton and Nashe's texts maintain Sidney's claim can be discussed. Skelton teaches through 'The Bowge of Court', by employing allegory as a way to critique the court, and uses satire as a form of poetic council. Nashe teaches in 'The Choise of Valentines' by presenting his text and an example of originality and satirising the idea of performance. Skelton delights in his text by using the symbol of the ship as an ornament added to the truth of the poem. Nashe delights in his text by the freshness of language used and the originality of his poetry. Throughout the book, Mintz emphasizes on how sugar had begun as a luxury for all riches until it became a necessity for all people. The consumption of sugar has become quite a sensation within the European countries, particularly Britain. From the analysis in the book, Britain was one of the countries that consumed the most sugar during the seventeenth century. During the evaluation and analysis of sugar, Mintz describes the consumption of sugar to be a process that was quite difficult to understand as it was unsure why there was such a huge consumption of sugar. During the first sixteenth and seventeenth century, sugar was known as a luxury for the riches. According to Mintz, sugar was just a luxury that was not available to the poor and was limited only to those who could afford the sugar (84). It explains that the consumption of sugar took time to be embedded into a nation's society. With the use of sugar it mostly took the job of sweetening beverages that were bitter, such as tea, coffee, and chocolate (108). However, sugar was mostly used as a sweetener for tea unlike for chocolate and coffee as tea would taste the same no matter the amount of sugar (112). It reveals the effect of sugar as many rich individuals begin to use sugar as a sweetener for beverages which increases the consumption of sugar in daily life for British people. • 26. Critical Appreciation Of Sonnet 47 The determined female monarch, Queen Elizabeth I, was known for creating a cultural of love in England during her reign. Her love for her people and devotion to their protection was symbolized by her commitment to remain chaste throughout her life. In return, she was said to be well liked by her people. This relationship of love between Queen Elizabeth I and her courtiers provides for a unique power balance in Elizabethan courts and intertwines with the popular practice of writing love sonnets in 15th century England. Poets wrote deeply romantic and emotion filled sonnets that had underlying political messages, like those of Phillip Sidney. Phillip Sidney's love sonnets, as evident in sonnet 47 from Astrophil and Stella, symbolize and comment on the balance of power in court politics and the uneasiness of Elizabethan society about the rule of a female. Sonnet 47 illustrates the torment and inner struggle that a man experience when the woman he loves, Stella, does not return his love. This plot of betrayal of love is common in sonnet writing. The speaker is frustrated and contemplates what to do about his love. It is written in choppy verses that symbolize the sheer anguish and struggle that the speaker is experiencing. There is also a major shift in tone in the middle of the sonnet. The first half of the sonnet is written in a series of questions as the speaker reflects on how he got into the situation that he is in. The questions possess strong imagery of slavery with ... • 27. Shakespeare And Sidney : A Dialogue Of Limited Desire Shakespeare and Sidney: A Dialogue of Limited Desire In perhaps the most famous and well–known of Shakespeare's 154 sonnets, the speaker opens this poem with a question: "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?" (1). It is a typical sonnet in that it has a rhyme scheme, is 14 lines long, and in iambic pentameter. On the surface, this is simply a praise of the beauty of the speaker's beloved; he is not like the unpleasant heat of the summer, he is agreeable and eternal. This subject shall never fade nor stray like summer or any other love which sometime decline. Like a lyrical poem, in "Sonnet 18" there is a strong use of imagery, a sense of trying to catch the intensity of a fleeting moment, describing the passion one feels for someone so beautiful. It is a very personal tale. The speaker seems to be enamored with his subject–a fair and youthful lad who is addressed on many occasions in Shakespeare's repertoire of sonnets. Though readers do not receive any physical description pertaining to the youth, according to the speaker he is fairer and more beautiful than any summer's day. At the very beginning, the speaker asks "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?" (1) yet, ironically, the sonnet never gives any comparisons between the two. At all. In fact, he only contrasts them. So, would it be just or reasonable to compare an Adonis–type of subject to the fleeting, hot, never–lasting summer? According to the narrator, certainly not. As death for the youth is sadly ... • 29. Compare and Contrast the Ways Philip Sidney's Astrophil... Introduction In the late sixteenth and the seventeenth century, new ideas and motives in arts, inspired by the past but concerned with new concepts, appeared. Building on a courtly love, some writers and poets attempted to discuss the nature of love by commenting on gender issues and sexuality (MacArthur, 1989). Thus, love conventions, based on a passion or an unrequited love, would change, challenging social norms and discussing male and female sexualities. On the one hand, the authors explore male sexualities and a desire for a woman. Phillip Sidney's narrator is a lustful, musing about his chosen woman, her body and a sexual intercourse. Milton's character Comus resembles a similar character when attempting to seduce the Lady, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This male desire is given devious and egotistic connotations, because it overcomes reason, and becomes preoccupied with Stella's body. Stella, on the other hand, is personified Love and 'Virtue but that body grant to us' (AS, sonnet 52.14). However, Astrophil remains lustful, and when he is denied her body, he views her as 'too too cruel' (AS, sonnet 2.3–4), and becomes resentful. John Milton: Comus, A Mask presented at Ludlow Castle (1634) Milton's mask, presenting notions of chastity and a rampant sexuality, uses Comus, a devious character, to address the issue of physical desire. Comus, a passionate and sexual necromancer, captures the Lady, brings her to his pleasure palace, and attempts to seduce her through magic and a persuasion to 'be not coy' (C, p.44). Similarly to Sidney's poet, Comus experiences a narcissistic temptation of a bodily pleasure, which makes him more emotional than his female victim. By using a phallic symbol, his wand, he enchants the Lady, and offers her food and drink to increase her appetite and her desire. Many people debate on him being the next Great One, due to multiple aspects of his talent. Sidney Crosby, being the talented player he is, many people compare him to Wayne Gretzky who is the best known hockey player in history. Since hockey has evolved from when Wayne Gretzky was on top, it makes it difficult to compare him toSidney Crosby. But, since the evolution of hockey has occurred, this means that Sidney Crosby is better overall, speed wise, acceleration, agility, and endurance. With Crosby becoming the greatest hockey player in the world, he has been able to achieve many prestigious awards. Including the greatest award one is able to attain in hockey, Lord Stanley's Cup, in the 2008–09 Season. Crosby was then the youngest captain to ever win the Stanley Cup in NHL history. Other great achievement's Crosby has attained is the Art Ross trophy, which is awarded to the player with the most scoring points in a season. Another award he won that same season, in the 2006–07 season, was the Hart Trophy (Fitzpatrick). The final and most likely greatest achievement Crosby has made, is being the second youngest captain in NHL history. He did hold the reign of youngest Captain for 6 years until, Gabriel Landeskog was named captain for the Colorado Avalanche. Landeskog was only 11 days younger than Crosby when named, but he still took the title of youngest captain in NHL history (Sadowski). These achievements have supported reasons why Crosby is better than Gretzky. With all the evidence supporting Crosby's case proves that Crosby is overall a better and a stronger player than Gretzky. • 31. Sidney Crosby And Alex Ovechkin In Hockey Hockey, a sport who's premier league is the NHL. The NHL, over time has had its fair share of players who dominated the game. Some of these players were just "too good". Examples of this are Mario Lemieux, Gordie Howe, and the Great one, Wayne Gretzky. Today, there are a lot of great players in the league, sadly to go down in history in any sport you need to be at the top of your time. In current days we see plenty of good, young players, who really contribute to the league but some of the older players who have established their name to everyone are the only ones who have really put themselves in the history books. Today I'm writing this article to talk about two players, Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin. The two players are considered the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Choking" is a sports term used to refer to a team who does well during the regular season, but when it gets to the time when everything matters, they fail to live up to expectations. Sidney Crosby, on the other hand, has two Stanley Cups under his belt and by the looks of it, he may be winning another win this year. When both the players joined the league they got off to an immediate start in points. In Ovechkin's first year he put up 106 points and Crosby put up 102 points. The players have been pretty even throughout the years, stats wise. Crosby has missed quite a bit of his potential playing career due to injuries, many of which are concussions. As of the moment, Ovechkin has one more year in the league that Crosby and leads the two with a total of 1035 NHL career points. Crosby, on the other hand, has 1027 career points. Crosby also holds the title of the man to reach the 1000 point milestone in as little games as possible. In the goals category, Ovechkin leads by a tremendous margin. Sometimes this is a good thing, but if you look at his goals to points ratio, he doesn't impress in the assists area compared to Crosby. Ovechkin has scored 558 goals while in the league, Crosby only having scored 382. Crosby, on the other hand, has 645 assists while Ovechkin only has 477. Every time you bring these players up it is such a close battle to know which one of these players is better. In my opinion, I think that Crosby is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. Sidney Poiier Research Paper Sidney Poitier is best known for being the first black actor to win an Academy Award in 1964 ("Biography"). Although he was a great actor, director, and revolutionary for his time, he was more than just another star on film. He would pave the way for the black theater community and also create some of the most challenging interracial movies questioning racial equality later in his career. Born in Miami Florida on February 20th, 1927; Sidney Poitier grew up in the Bahamas and later moved to New York to pursue his dreams of theatre ('About"). Sidney Poitier not only grew up in a hard time for black Americans, his introduction to life was extremely poverty–stricken. Although his parents lived in the Bahamas, Sidney Poitier was born in Miami, when his parents were visiting on a trip to sell tomatoes from their small farm (Goudsouzian, 8). When a child is born on the United States soil, the child is automatically an American citizen. This happenstance would prove to be the single most important thing later in his life. It is what allowed him to move to New York and attend theater school. Being a black actor wasn't easy. Sidney Poitier had to work twice as hard for the roles and make sure every performance was perfect, However he did stand for what he believed in, and only took roles in which he could envision his own sense of self. Whenever a press conference was held the reporters would grill him about current events that had to do with the black population. Usually the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Thankfully, there are young actors like Sidney Grigg, who are willing to invest the time and resources required to ensure longevity and eventual success. The kids I'm around, including myself, do other things like hockey and dance and school sports, and one is not more important than the other. We are all really happy for each other when we do well at things and are there for each other when we have tough times. What is your advice to other young people who wish to become actors? My advice would be to take acting classes and do short films to see if you like it! It's different than most people think. It's hard work and long hours, and you do have to miss out on things if you have auditions or are filmin,g so you have to love it! My mom made me do about six short films before she would let me get an agent! What do you like to do in your free time? I love hanging out with my friends, going to my grandparents' cottage and travelling! I also take dance classes––jazz and hip hop. Living in Vancouver is awesome because there is so much to do! • 41. Sidney Love Sonnet Valuing Power During the Elizabethan Era, the English thrived in the ways of culture. Literature, poetry, theater, and music all saw tremendous advancement. Love sonnets became particularly popular due to the opportunity they offered their authors to express their most alluring desires, while sticking to the strict guidelines of a sonnet. One particular 16th century writer, Sir Philip Sidney, wrotelove sonnets that followed the relationship of the desire–ridden Astrophil and the object of his affection, Stella. Poetry at this time often had political or religious influences, and Sidney's work was no exception. Focusing specifically on Sonnet 69, Sidney metaphorically relates a personal experience to a political gain, suggesting that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There was constant speculation over whether or not a woman was fit to rule, so a man no doubt would have stolen not only her power, but the people's respect as well. In order to understand the political agenda present in the sonnet, one must notice the power Elizabeth I would have lost with a marriage, versus the power that Astrophil figuratively gained through obtaining Stella's love. In order for suitors to gain power from either woman, the women had to have had power for them to acquire. Similar to Queen Elizabeth, Stella is portrayed as a woman of power and appears to be highly sought after. Her love was an indescribably, wonderful prize to the speaker, just as Queen Elizabeth's hand in marriage would have been quite an accomplishment for any nobleman. Words such as "nobler", "kings", "covenants", and "monarchs" are all present in the poem, not only alluding to the political agenda present in the work, but possibly Stella's societal position. Elizabeth I was showered with ravishing gifts and compliments routinely by her courtiers. These men of her court sought to woo and impress the unattainable queen. This need to grasp the queen's attention also pertains to the relationship between writing love sonnets and court politics as a whole under Queen Elizabeth. The frustration that follows loving someone and that love not being reciprocated was a vital aspect of much of the love poetry at the time. This popular ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
