Fact Of Identity
The State or Fact of Being the Same
In the dictionary, identity is "the state or fact of being the same", yet identity is much more than that
("Identity"). Life is a journey in which people define themselves as an individual in order to develop
a sense of identity. However, the question is what is identity? Thomas Merton said in his novel,
Contemplation in a World of Action, "A person does not simply "receive" his or her identity. Identity
is much more than the name of features one is born with. Identity is something people must create
for themselves by making choices that are significant and that require a courageous commitment in
the face of challenges. Identity means having ideas and values that one lives by." Identity is
something people establish for themselves as supported in the literatures of Brent Staples, Nancy
Mairs, and Truman Capote.
In the article, "Just Walk on By: Black Men and Public Space", Brent Staples established an identity
based on his actions and beliefs rather than the assumptions made by the public based on his
appearance. While walking down the street, Staples whistles ... Show more content on

Perry experienced a troubled childhood with violent and unconcerned parents (Capote 296). Without
direction from his parents, Perry lived with no rules or discipline and became unable to distinguish
right from wrong. Perry attached little value to human life because of the lack of moral principles as
an early child. After Perry's parents divorced, Perry lived with his father where they drifted from
place to place (Capote 275). After the brutality of his parents' divorce, Perry lost trust and became
reluctant to confide in others. Without much constancy in his life, Perry became emotionally
detached and developed a lonely character. Perry's traumatic childhood that left him psychologically

Delta Sigma Linear Processing Circuits
3 Research Objectives
3.1 Research Objective 1: Delta–Sigma Linear Processing Circuits
The goal of this research objective is to analyze the performance of Delta–Sigma linear processing
circuits, including adders and coefficient multipliers. Examples of questions that we wish to address
include the following. What is the noise shaping performance of high–order digital Delta–Sigma
modulators for Delta–Sigma adders? What is the frequency response of Delta–Sigma coefficient
multipliers? What is the circuit power and area of Delta–Sigma MAC circuits compared to
conventional circuits?
3.1.1 Background and Rationale
Multiply–and–accumulate (MAC) are fundamental linear operations in signal processing. However,
they also represent a bottleneck in mobile signal processing systems insofar that the circuit
complexity and power consumption of conventional digital adders and multipliers are relatively high
whereas mobile systems need to be miniaturized and power–efficient. Although alternative MAC
circuit structures have been proposed, their performances do not yet meet the demand of
applications that require intensive computing operations with limited battery power [34]. A Delta–
Sigma based MAC, therefore, constitutes a promising solution for low–power DSP devices.
Delta–Sigma based MAC circuits use Delta–Sigma bit–streams as their input and output. For
instance, the inputs of a Delta–Sigma adder are digital bit–streams generated by Delta–Sigma
Modulators. The adder also produces

April Raintree Identity
We all have our own unique identity and culture. One's "identity" is the image that projects out into
the rest of the world and culture onto one's self. Culture plays a major role in shaping your identity.
A person's upbringing, beliefs, and values are usually made up by culture and can remain throughout
a person's life giving us each our own unique identity. In Search of April Raintree explores the life
journey of trouble young Metis woman in her quest to search out her identity.
There is a great importance to communal belonging in every culture. The beliefs and values that
exist in us as adults are usually because of each of our own cultural upbringings. Although some
people might affirm their inherent cultural affiliations and traditions and remain within their cultural
community of origin, others may choose to search for, and find membership in a new one. Because

the people in April Raintree's life lacked good qualities towards her. April in effect grows up

Shaping American Identity Essay
Ayah Gleisner

US History, 3

American identity has been continuously changing over the past century. This is due to many factors
such as expansion, migration, and immigration. The migration of people has helped create an
American identity. During three periods of history, significant changes happened that helped frame
who Americans are. The colonization of the Americas has shaped the American identity in many
ways. When the first white English speaking colonists came over to settle in Jamestown, their main
goal was profit. This tradition of profit has carried on for centuries after. After Jamestown,
Protestant colonists came over, their main goals were to find religious freedom and to spread the
word of their god. Now, 53% of Americans are Protestant and missionary work is still in effect today
all over the Americas. Chattel slavery shaped the class system for the next generations and
contributed to the idea that America benefits off of other people's hard work. Not only did
colonization shape the American identity, but migration within the United States did as well.

The recent immigration stations such as Ellis Island and Angel Island have formed the view that
America is a multilingual country with English being the base language. However, these
immigration states have also reiterated that America is still not accepting of non–whites. As well as
the recent immigration stations, the great migration also greatly affected the American identity by
helping the belief that America is not accepting of non–whites. They did this by creating racist laws
in the south which pushed African Americans north. Lastly, the issue of threatening to repeal DACA
and deport thousands of people who had no choice whether or not to come over illegally or not has
the fact that America is still not accepting of non–white immigrants set in

Away Michael Gow Analysis
Individual's identities can be shaped by the way they perceive their connection with other and the
world around them. These views are represented by self–reflection through venturing to new places
which consequently provoke new discoveries or rediscovering what is known. Within the text
'Away' by Michael Gow and Sean Penn's 2007 film "Into the Wild," these ideas are represented as
protagonists move away from the ease of their homes and travel 'away'. Through these journeys
individual's identities are shaped by new experiences and recognising connections with others and
the world. Gow uses techniques such as Intertextuality, juxtaposed dialogue, and symbolism to
present the transformations the characters experience from traveling away. Within ... Show more

Within the text 'Away' central figures are able to exhibit this concept through varying connections
with others, particularly Tom. The use of intertextuality of a play 'The Stanger on the shore'
contributes to the shaping of Corals character as this is the catalyst of for her self–discovery as
through her connection with sailor, played by Tom she is able to reconnect with her emotions and
influence healing. The use of the play also allows Tom to express to coral the need to accept the loss
of her son and live her life again. This is depicted metaphorically through the dialogue of the Sailor
"you don't belong here. You must return to your own people" As within the play this was seen as
literal detail, metaphorically it encouraged coral to accept the loss of her son and heal. This sense of
healing is depicted as Coral's declares, "I'm walking, I'm walking, I'm walking." This symbolises
how the connection with Tom and the intertextuality of the play 'The Stanger on the Shore'
contributed to the construction of her identity and self–discovery. This concept is displayed within
Penn's 2007 film 'Into the Wild' as Christopher's ever–changing perception of himself is shaped by
the relationships with others and through his connection with the world. Through leaving his life and

What Role Do Relationships Play In Shaping A Person's...
Identity is a critical aspect of the growth and development in human beings. It is defined as a
condition or character as to who a person or what a thing is; the qualities that distinguish or identify
a person. Identity influenced by relationships is when the people one associates themselves with
shape their identity. "Researchers posited that it is important to recognize the process of exploring
and making commitments in interpersonal relationships is four domains: friendship, dating, sex
roles, and recreation." Relationships with friends, parents, and partners help influence an identity in
a person. They each have a specific time where one is more important than the other. Each one
shapes the person's identity, it could be for the better or for the worst. Parents are the first influence
that a child has, then peers/friends become more important, and lastly partners help finish off

Peers have a major role in shaping a person's identity. Children tend to have a similar identity as
their peers. "Similarity among friends. Strong correlations were found." If a friend is doing
something it makes the child feel pressured into doing it to. Adolescents tend to "rebel" against their
parents in their teen years and that's when peers become a huge influence on shaping the teen's
identity. For example if a persons friends are doing drugs he or she may feel peer pressured. Peer
pressure is influence from members of one's peer group. If his or her friends do good things, for
example, pick up trash or treat others with respect it helps the adolescent to not liter and pick up
after themselves and treat people with respect. A lot of adolescents feel peer pressure every day if
they are not fitting in with the right peer group. Peers could shape the teens identity into a good one
or a bad one depending on their friends personalities and

Finding My Role In Shaping My Personal Identity
This particular assignment has been very tough for me. I don't believe that the neighborhoods in
which I grew up had a certain importance in shaping my political identity. However, the countries in
which I have resided have helped me find my own personal identity, and with it; my political one.
Several times I have been asked where am I from, and while I want to say that I'm from Nicaragua,
there's always something that stops me. It's not lack of pride of my hometown, but it's because it
doesn't seem fair to the other countries that have played their part in raising me and shaping me into
the woman that I am today. I was born in Rockville, Maryland, and moved at a very young age to
Caracas, Venezuela. I barely have any recollection whatsoever.

In one's life, there are many core memories that make up who a person is and many life changing
events or people that help shape your identity. At the time, one might not realize how much someone
changed their life, or how an event completely changed them as a person, but in the end, one will be
truly grateful for the events and people who helped them become who they are; just as I am. The day
I met my best friend changed a lot of aspects of my life and helped shape my identity. We met at

letting what people say about me bother me. She reminds me everyday of the strength I have and
that has made me more confident. This has shaped my indentity because I am now stronger than I
ever would have been without meeting her. Also, I know the capabilities I have that can inspire
others. I never used to reach out to people in need and offer help and my advice. Now, I realized that
I am truly capable of helping others, and it is now part of my daily life to help anyone I can. These

know that part of my identity is helping others onto the path of success, and that is something that I

Society : Identification And Identity
Identification and identity are the labels or titles that individuals and groups of individuals put upon
themselves. In contrast difference, often refers to how individuals see themselves, in comparison to
the way that they are seen by others. Everything that an individual does, thinks, and feels relates
back to the way that they identify them self and their identification. This identity is also known as
sameness. Sameness helps to bond individuals making them feel as if they are a part of a group or a
larger community. The way that individuals identify themselves, comparing and contrasting their
differences to others is known as otherness. Otherness often leads to conflict among the groups
being compared. Society defines individuals and groups of individuals by their differences. Race,
religion, gender, sexuality, social status, and education are some of the main differences that society
currently focuses on. These differences are then responsible for social negotiations. Society tries to
balance or negotiate the needs of the majority, based on population size and group influence. The
dominant groups values are taken into consideration and logical accommodations are made to
benefit this group. From a metaphysical standpoint individuals are made up of identities and
differences that have been accumulated over time to meet their needs and fulfill their expectations.
Internal and external factors are directly related to identity therefore, people's differences must be

Shaping Identity Using Social Structure
INTRODUCTION Social structure and social interaction are integral in evaluating a person's
identity. Identities are the sets of meanings people hold for themselves that define "what it means" to
be who they are as persons, as role occupants and as group members (PJB article) People are
generally influenced by the norms and beliefs of society. A person's identity is formed through a
combination of factors derived from social structure (macrosociology) and social interaction
(microsociology). The self influences society through the actions of individuals thereby creating
groups, organizations, networks, and institutions (PJB a soiciological approach to self and identity).

In addition, individuals can also reinforce their identity by using status symbols in as part of their
appearance. This can be in the form of a work uniform to signify an occupation, or in a fashion
sense, the type of clothing worn is a silent statement of what sets you apart from others.
PARAGRAPH 3 As Linton states, "a person holds a status, and performs a role". Simply put, a
status is a position and a role is a set of behaviours. With each status, follows a certain role for us to
take part in. People tend to adapt to roles, moving through different roles in fluency as student, son,
friend.Because people tend to have many different statuses and therefore, many different roles,
conflict occasionally occurs among the various roles. The concept of role conflict is "conflict among
the roles connected to two or more statuses" (ref). A good example of role conflict lies in the
working mother; she must take on the responsibilities of mothering the children at home while
taking on the responsibilities of working outside the home, away from the children, in order to earn
an income (RR). This kind of conflict involves roles which arise from separate statuses, but the
same sort of conflict can occur from the roles of a single status. Role strain, then, is "tension among
the roles connected to a single status". A teacher, for example, can be friendly with his or her
students, but must remain objective in grading them.

Societal Identity In Ender's Game
What defines a person's self? Maybe it's something they decide about themselves, or maybe
something quantifiable. In either case, everyone has some sort of Identity. Throughout the novel
Ender's Game, Ender, unsurprisingly the main character, is always questioning who he is both to the
rest of the world and to himself. This soul searching is a great catalyst for the plot to thicken. His
identity crisis can be broken between three categories, societal identity, interpersonal identity and
personal identity. Ender's Identity is Ender's problems with societal identity are apparent even within
the first chapter, when he is called a "third"(Card 2). This term is a derogatory one which refers to

His main crisis of identity has to be that of ending up like his seemingly mentally disturbed and
violent older brother, Peter. When his monitor is taken off of him, he was attacked by a group of
bullies. He subsequently defeated them, but did so in such a brutal way that he couldn't help but feel
guilty of unnecessary violence. This is shown in the quote " Ender leaned his head against the wall
of the corridor and cried until the bus came. I am just like Peter. Take my monitor away, and I am
just like Peter."(Card 6). He also shows characteristics of Peter when he is first put on the space
station with other recruits. When he is being harassed by a kid behind him, Ender anticipates the
next blow and grabs the kid's arm, but he ends up breaking it (Card 26). He questions whether he
broke the arm because he wasn't used to null gravity, or because he was angry and couldn't control
his outburst. He displays this quality again later in the book too. When Ender is tested through a
random computer generated simulation test, he gets upset after none of his solutions are working
and turns to violence. This has a deep psychological effect on Ender because Peter is explicitly
shown to be who he hates, so for him to become Peter is to become everything he's avoided trying to
become. The struggle between identities is troubling to say the least, and truly defines his character.
Luckily, this feeling of becoming peter is

Foreshadowing In Marge Piercy's A Work Of Artifice
Looking at the title of Marge Piercy's "A Work of Artifice," readers can break it down and sense the
foreshadowing. In the Oxford dictionary, "artifice" is defined as "clever or cunning devices or
expedients, use to trick or deceive others." This foreshadows the deception that the writer exposes in
the poem. Piercy describes a global dilemma the the use of metaphor (a bonsai tree). A bonsai tree is
"an ornamental tree or shrub grown in a pot and artificially prevented from reaching its normal
size." Given the opportunity, this tree could grow to enormous heights. Yet, it is trimmed by
gardeners'. This metaphor of the tree compared to women's suppression and the gardener as the

Readers are introduced to a "bonsai tree in the attractive pot" in the first two lines. Here metaphor is
established. The bonsai tree is being compared to the average woman. Like a bonsai tree, the
average woman can become a distinguished figure and meet her full potential. For fear that the tree
were to grow out of its pot, it may be alienated, it remains confined to its pot. A woman may feel
inclined to stick to societal expectations for fear of being detached from others. Consequently, inside
the pot, no woman or bonsai tree can grow to their fullest potential. Metaphorical use is also shown
as Piercey compares the gardener to society. Continuously, society tries to mold women into being
"domestic and weak." The gardener is shown doing this as he "carefully prunes" and "whittles back
the branches." He is only declining the progression of the bonsai tree as he creates his own vision
for it. In the attempt to be "attractive," the potential of the tree is taken and it continues to watch
their branches be pruned and whittled away. Like this tree, women face the struggle to succeed in
life while having societal inequities pinned on their

The Invisible Man spends the whole book, Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison, trying to come to terms

Invisible Man's (IM's) briefcase as a symbol of oppression throughout the novel, while he uses the

Right after the invisible man's story starts, he receives a briefcase after he is forced to participate in

in what he becomes a part of. When he goes to the college, he leads a white trustee around, which
seems like a big honor and he is the one that receives this. Which leads to him realizing that it was
not about him, it was about making a good impression for the college. When he enters the

becomes based on starting with the briefcase and setting up how other people in the book use him
throughout. The briefcase sets up his future throughout the book.
Similarly, later on in the book when he acquires the doll that Clifton was doing a puppet show with
he keeps it, resulting in a further attachment to pieces that seem to give him significance or identity.
This doll connects the invisible man to Clifton, one of his best friends from the brotherhood. When

Analysis of Peter Skrynecki´s Migrant Hostel and 10 Mary...
Through an individual's intrinsic desire to develop meaningful connections with society, place or
heritage, they forge their own sense of self–identity by overcoming the barriers in place. In Peter
Skrzynecki's poetry, particularly "Migrant Hostel" and "10 Mary Street" we witness an individual's
experience of segregation to eventual connection in the world they live.
Skrzynecki's insightful poem "Migrant Hostel" explores the notion of impermanence and
uncertainty in an individual's experience where stability is essential to develop an identity and sense
of belonging. The poem illustrates the disorientating nature of a migrant hostel where the people
within yearn for sanctuary in the Australian community. This idea is instantly reflected through the
negative connotations in "no one kept count" representing a sense of anonymity in the atmosphere
through a lack of individual significance. The enjambment and juxtaposition of the "comings" and
"goings" highlights the transient and uncertain nature of the hostel environment where they were
"left wondering who would be coming next". The intrinsic desire of human nature to develop
meaningful bonds with people that share similar adversities is displayed through simile and symbol
of a "homing pigeon circling to get its bearings". Furthermore, the alliteration in "memories of
hunger and hate" convey their previous experiences hindering their search for harmony and
permission into the broader community. This notion is further

The number "one" is not a thing. Math has no definitive reality. Numbers are a social construct, a

INTRODUCTION A significant amount of research efforts have been directed towards attempts at
providing high quality service for real time applications of IP based networks in the past decade.
The core idea of these techniques is to control the IP network congestion level which is the main
cause of delays/losses, and also imposes upper bounds on these events. Traffic policing is one of the
techniques used for this purpose. These techniques makes the assumption that users generating
flows/calls will specify the setup time by using Service Level Agreement (SLAs) i.e. the
characteristics of the traffic that they emit to the network. Therefore, these techniques are employed
to ensure that the generated traffic is within the conforms of previously agreed contracts. One of the
most popular traditional traffic policing techniques is the Leaky Bucket (LB). Average rate and the
maximum burst size/length of a

Identity is one's morals, personality, and behavior. Society makes one act a certain way to make
them try to fit in. Society plays a major role in shaping identity in different ways such as
unemployment, racism, and poverty. In addition identity is influenced by the environment you live

Identity and Belonging Essay
Our perception of our identity is constantly changing, the groups we belong to, the people we talk to
and the way we connect with others help to form our identity. There is one thing we all have in
common despite our individual identities, is the need to belong. There's no obligation to belong to
only one group, you can belong to many. An individual can belong to many groups, which will then
create multiple identities; hence our understanding of identity is never constant. Belonging to a
loving family, group of caring friends that help us to develop our own sense of self. However,
belonging can have a negative side. For example our families might have an expectation of us to do

We all want to stand out of the crowd and be something special, but not all of us have the potential.
However, it doesn't necessarily have to be about education, parents can be very protective over us
and hold us back from socializing with friends, especially from the opposite gender, which makes it
harder for us teenagers to belong to a group.
Media has a major influence in shaping our identity. It brain washes us by telling us what to do and
because we are constantly surrounded by it, we allow it to create stereotypes, and change the way
we act and think. Popular TV shows such as the Simpsons are constantly making us use and believe
stereotypes. Mainstream media create images of perfect girls on magazines, to brainwash young
girls into believing that they have to be as thin and perfect, as the 'Photoshoped' images of the girls
in magazines to be accepted and to fit in groups and be happy and loved. The pressure to fit in and
to be perfect leaves a psychological effect on young girls which influences and changes their
original identity. Half of our identities today are completely based on what we see in the media.
Although our names, cultures and religions determine otherwise, Mainstream media determines our
dress, behaviour, hobbies and interests. What we see in magazines and on television dictate the way

novel, Ron is the youngest amongst his five outstanding brothers. As the youngest son in the his
family, Ron was always comparing himself to his older brothers, who all achieved great success.
This is evident when Ron says "I'm the sixth in our family to go to Hogwarts. You could say I got a
lot to live up to. Bill and Charlie have already left – Bill was Head Boy and Charlie was captain of
Quidditch. Now Percy's a prefect. Fred and George mess around a lot, but they still get really good
marks and everyone thinks they're really funny. Everyone expects me to do as well as the others, but
if I do, it's no big deal, because they did it first" (Rowling 67). Being the youngest of five brothers is
a predicament to Ron, because he faces the constant pressure of living up to all of his brother's
accomplishments. His position in the family has led to a lot of his insecurities and self–doubt.
Unlike Ron, I did not come from a large family and for that reason, I personally did not receive the
same pressure and expectations that Ron faced. Without these expectations, I did not struggle with
issues of self esteem, whereas Ron often feels inadequate about being in the shadow of his
successful brothers, which resulted in problems with his self–confidence. The aspect of family in

she was never comfortable in her own skin, and she took out those feelings out on herself in

Their Eyes Were Watching God Identity Analysis
What is identity? A normal person would think that it's simply defined as who we are. However,
there are many definitions of identity, as it can mean differently for others. Identity is what makes us
unique from one another because there is no one else like us. Since our surroundings, such as the
people we meet and places we go to, possess a role into shaping who we are, we are constantly
changing. As we grow up and become curious, we experiences many things and start to see different
sides of ourselves. We start to question our individuality, to the point where we may struggle with
whom we really are. Similar to Janie Crawford in the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora

There are many different factors that influence our identity, such as our family, relationships,
society, etc. Family plays a significant role into shaping our identity because they can influence our
attitudes, beliefs, and values. Some may grow up having the same values as their parents because it's
what they are taught and they retain those values as they enter adulthood. They may be modified
along the way, but it's not completely gone. Although family can help prevent us from committing
poor choices through guidance, they can also hinder our ability to accomplish what we desire. In
Janie's case, Nanny plays a significant part into shaping her identity. Since Janie and Nanny had
only each other left, Nanny became very protective of Janie. In order for Janie to avoid experiencing
the tragedy both her mother and grandmother went through, which was being raped and forced into
a relationship, she wanted the absolute best for Janie. "As a former slave, the grandmother, Nanny, is
haunted by the compensatory dream of making her first daughter, and then her granddaughter,

an individual's identity and play a significant role in one's life by shaping personal values,

against it. Baba had the courage due to his past experiences and adverse situations he has already

values and beliefs went against Russian soldiers demands only because incidents before have had an
impact on his character and they shaped his identity. Baba constantly tries to do good deeds to
redeem and perhaps forgive himself. Another example of shaping identity is society pressure. Baba's
image mattered, how other people saw him and how they treated him was a part of his personal
values and self worth. Wealth, status and honor were how he was portrayed in front of society.
Society pressure and judgment shaped Baba's identity and impacted his decisions. He was ashamed
to tell everyone that he is Hassan's father, a father to a Hazzara. He did not want to lose his identity
of being a Pashtun or be disrespected due to his past. Just as Amir Baba was willing to deal with
guilt and regret for personal desires and searched for true redemption the rest of his life.
Different people have various beliefs and their own way of doing things. Hassan was one
exceptional character whose loyalty overruled all betrayals in the novel. Just as any other

Our Identity Changes According to Where We Are and Who We...
Our identity changes according to where we are and who we are with.
Outside influences have a strong capability to influence and alter our personal identity. Both directly
and indirectly, the social contexts in which we live can change the way we think and feel, and by
extension how we interact with other people and places. Immediate family, friendship groups and
the physical environment are all factors which contribute to our ever changing perceptions of
ourselves. Sometimes personal identity can be subtly reshaped over a gradual time frame, as our
sense of who we are is modified without personal recognition that we are changing. At other times
we may be able to notice our personal identity changing, through important life decisions. ... Show

It is primarily our own decision to associate with a desired group of people. The way others see us,
as well as the way we see ourselves can change as a result. In the movie Witness, it is evident that
Rachel is quite fond of John Book. In the scene where she is dancing with him, a change in her
identity becomes apparent. She steers away from all past influences from her family and religion,
and is driven to act like John. She feels a need to relate to him, and is envious of his behaviour. Her
behaviour then reflects a woman who is not of Amish belief, much to the dismay of her father.
Where we are, in a general sense, refers to where we live. The aspects of where we are which relate
to personal identity involve how the society is run, and its physical features. Different societies have
a vast difference in laws, governments, religions, cultures and general ethics. These will then
translate to how the people who live there choose to behave. A strict society with harsh regulations
and punishments will cause people to be more reserved and controlled. A society with a high level of
violence and unethical behaviour will usually cause future generations to act similarly. The physical
features of a location can also influence behaviour and identity. For example, the residents of a
society on the beach will have certain typical and expected behaviour, which then translates to a
particular lifestyle.

A person's identity is one's own unique set of qualities and beliefs, that makes them different from
others. Identity is influenced by many factors in a person's life and is developed over many years.
Identity is formed by an important combination of one's culture and one's action. This is seen best
through parental influence in our lives, the type of environment we were brought up in, and our own
personal choices that will ultimately define who we are.
Parents have a huge impact in their children's lives and can either positively or negatively influence
their children's identity formation. Parents have an obligation of investing their time in their

showed how membership of group can make us see differences and get to know who we are and

other ones. If there is chance of changing identity people tend to move from lower valuated to

If there is no chance of changing identity due it was given to us –race gender etc and people feel
their group is devaluated they can take an action. People try to creatively highlight positive

Essay on Figurative Language in A Work of Artifice
Figurative Language in A Work of Artifice by Marge Piercy
"A clever trick, crafty device, or stratagem" is how Webster's Encyclopedia of Unabridged
Dictionary of the English Language defines Artifice. Marge Piercy definitely used "crafty"
techniques in writing "A Work of Artifice." In this poem, Piercy reflects on the growth of a bonsai
tree, considering the molded existence of what it is to what it could have naturally been. With deeper
analysis of this poem, the correlation between a bonsai tree and the shaped role of women within
society becomes evident. The poet introduces one specific metaphor in the beginning, comparing the
growth of a bonsai tree to the development of women. This single metaphor is supported throughout

detailed picture in the imagination of its readers. Readers visualize an incredibly precise little
gardener, as he diligently prunes the bonsai tree. Another of Piercy's lines' is, "could have grown
eighty feet tall on the side of a mountain till split by lightning." Again the reader is provided with
detailed illustrations and sounds that correlate with the picture. In this line, for instance, a
magnificent tree high above the skyline, destroyed both by a visual bolt of lightening and a booming
crack of thunder can be seen. Examples of imagery are abundant throughout Piercy's entire poem.
As readers look at the poem externally, the imagery is directly related to a vision of the bonsai tree.
With further internal analysis, it becomes evident that there is slight ambiguity within these lines,
lending themselves to have connotative meanings. In such a way, the sense–provoking images the
writer includes relate not only to describing a bonsai tree, but also to explaining the role of women
within society.
Specifically, the double meanings of the imagery can be deciphered through examination of the
writer's use of metaphors. Each of the descriptions about the bonsai tree can be applied to women. In

Nationalism And Personhood
The relationship between personhood and nationalism is a complex and contended discussion. There
is extensive theory surrounding the contested understanding of the ways personal identity and
(national) social identities are mutually informed. It can be argued that nationalism plays a role in
shaping the personhood, as personal identity draws on the cultural aspects of national identity and
integrates these ideas into individual self–understanding (Hearn 2007). Through ethnographic case
studies, this essay will examine the role of Billig's 'banal nationalism', Cohen's 'personal nationalism'

organized through processes, but instead ways of habit entrenched into the surrounding
environment, both material and social (Billig 1995). It is argued that personhood is not merely
linked to nationalism as a process of filling psychological needs, but that individuals adapt to the

unsatisfied and distraught with their job. People who enjoy their job and work environment will
create more of a confident identity compared to someone who does not will have an un–motivated
identity. School has an impact as well when it comes to identity. It is where a children, adolescents,
and adults are influenced by acquiring knowledge and constantly being surrounded by peers.
Through school, memberships in friendship groups, cliques, or "crews" helps build an identity apart
from their relationship to parents. However, over–identification with a clannish group that rejects
anyone who looks or acts different can limit personal growth. Religion plays a part in a person's
identity structure. It is the search of what one calls faith in one's self and the worship of either one
supreme being or numerous beings. But religion comes in different formalities. There are those who
were raised practicing their religion, those who were influenced and converted, and those who were
brainwashed. People who practice a certain religion will more likely raise their children under that
same religion. Being raised practicing a religion creates the virtues and morals for that person's
identity from an early stage. It helps parents create a sense of direction and inflict the core values
their children need. Some people have

Identity In Mother Tongue, By Amy Tan
Everyone is born with a unique identity. The way we understand our self is influenced by our
identity. Our identity goes beyond daily and can be influenced by many things, such as the
environment we live in, dreams or culture. In Amy tan's essay mother tongue, she discusses about

Fact Of Identity

  • 1. Fact Of Identity The State or Fact of Being the Same In the dictionary, identity is "the state or fact of being the same", yet identity is much more than that ("Identity"). Life is a journey in which people define themselves as an individual in order to develop a sense of identity. However, the question is what is identity? Thomas Merton said in his novel, Contemplation in a World of Action, "A person does not simply "receive" his or her identity. Identity is much more than the name of features one is born with. Identity is something people must create for themselves by making choices that are significant and that require a courageous commitment in the face of challenges. Identity means having ideas and values that one lives by." Identity is something people establish for themselves as supported in the literatures of Brent Staples, Nancy Mairs, and Truman Capote. In the article, "Just Walk on By: Black Men and Public Space", Brent Staples established an identity based on his actions and beliefs rather than the assumptions made by the public based on his appearance. While walking down the street, Staples whistles ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Perry experienced a troubled childhood with violent and unconcerned parents (Capote 296). Without direction from his parents, Perry lived with no rules or discipline and became unable to distinguish right from wrong. After Perry's parents divorced, Perry lived with his father where they drifted from place to place (Capote 275). After the brutality of his parents' divorce, Perry lost trust and became reluctant to confide in others. Without much constancy in his life, Perry became emotionally detached and developed a lonely character. • 3. Delta Sigma Linear Processing Circuits 3 Research Objectives 3.1 Research Objective 1: Delta–Sigma Linear Processing Circuits The goal of this research objective is to analyze the performance of Delta–Sigma linear processing circuits, including adders and coefficient multipliers. Examples of questions that we wish to address include the following. What is the noise shaping performance of high–order digital Delta–Sigma modulators for Delta–Sigma adders? What is the frequency response of Delta–Sigma coefficient multipliers? What is the circuit power and area of Delta–Sigma MAC circuits compared to conventional circuits? 3.1.1 Background and Rationale Multiply–and–accumulate (MAC) are fundamental linear operations in signal processing. However, they also represent a bottleneck in mobile signal processing systems insofar that the circuit complexity and power consumption of conventional digital adders and multipliers are relatively high whereas mobile systems need to be miniaturized and power–efficient. Although alternative MAC circuit structures have been proposed, their performances do not yet meet the demand of applications that require intensive computing operations with limited battery power [34]. A Delta– Sigma based MAC, therefore, constitutes a promising solution for low–power DSP devices. Delta–Sigma based MAC circuits use Delta–Sigma bit–streams as their input and output. For instance, the inputs of a Delta–Sigma adder are digital bit–streams generated by Delta–Sigma Modulators. The adder also produces ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Culture plays a major role in shaping your identity. A person's upbringing, beliefs, and values are usually made up by culture and can remain throughout a person's life giving us each our own unique identity. In Search of April Raintree explores the life journey of trouble young Metis woman in her quest to search out her identity. There is a great importance to communal belonging in every culture. The beliefs and values that exist in us as adults are usually because of each of our own cultural upbringings. Although some people might affirm their inherent cultural affiliations and traditions and remain within their cultural community of origin, others may choose to search for, and find membership in a new one. • 7. Shaping American Identity Essay Ayah Gleisner Stearns US History, 3 10–15–17 American identity has been continuously changing over the past century. This is due to many factors such as expansion, migration, and immigration. The migration of people has helped create an American identity. During three periods of history, significant changes happened that helped frame who Americans are. The colonization of the Americas has shaped the American identity in many ways. When the first white English speaking colonists came over to settle in Jamestown, their main goal was profit. This tradition of profit has carried on for centuries after. After Jamestown, Protestant colonists came over, their main goals were to find religious freedom and to spread the word of their god. Now, 53% of Americans are Protestant and missionary work is still in effect today all over the Americas. Chattel slavery shaped the class system for the next generations and contributed to the idea that America benefits off of other people's hard work. Not only did colonization shape the American identity, but migration within the United States did as well. Religion is a major part of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, these immigration states have also reiterated that America is still not accepting of non–whites. As well as the recent immigration stations, the great migration also greatly affected the American identity by helping the belief that America is not accepting of non–whites. They did this by creating racist laws in the south which pushed African Americans north. Lastly, the issue of threatening to repeal DACA and deport thousands of people who had no choice whether or not to come over illegally or not has the fact that America is still not accepting of non–white immigrants set in ... • 9. Away Michael Gow Analysis Individual's identities can be shaped by the way they perceive their connection with other and the world around them. These views are represented by self–reflection through venturing to new places which consequently provoke new discoveries or rediscovering what is known. Within the text 'Away' by Michael Gow and Sean Penn's 2007 film "Into the Wild," these ideas are represented as protagonists move away from the ease of their homes and travel 'away'. Through these journeys individual's identities are shaped by new experiences and recognising connections with others and the world. Gow uses techniques such as Intertextuality, juxtaposed dialogue, and symbolism to present the transformations the characters experience from traveling away. Within ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Within the text 'Away' central figures are able to exhibit this concept through varying connections with others, particularly Tom. The use of intertextuality of a play 'The Stanger on the shore' contributes to the shaping of Corals character as this is the catalyst of for her self–discovery as through her connection with sailor, played by Tom she is able to reconnect with her emotions and influence healing. The use of the play also allows Tom to express to coral the need to accept the loss of her son and live her life again. This is depicted metaphorically through the dialogue of the Sailor "you don't belong here. You must return to your own people" As within the play this was seen as literal detail, metaphorically it encouraged coral to accept the loss of her son and heal. This sense of healing is depicted as Coral's declares, "I'm walking, I'm walking, I'm walking." This symbolises how the connection with Tom and the intertextuality of the play 'The Stanger on the Shore' contributed to the construction of her identity and self–discovery. This concept is displayed within Penn's 2007 film 'Into the Wild' as Christopher's ever–changing perception of himself is shaped by the relationships with others and through his connection with the world. • 11. What Role Do Relationships Play In Shaping A Person's... Identity is a critical aspect of the growth and development in human beings. It is defined as a condition or character as to who a person or what a thing is; the qualities that distinguish or identify a person. Identity influenced by relationships is when the people one associates themselves with shape their identity. "Researchers posited that it is important to recognize the process of exploring and making commitments in interpersonal relationships is four domains: friendship, dating, sex roles, and recreation." Relationships with friends, parents, and partners help influence an identity in a person. They each have a specific time where one is more important than the other. I don't believe that the neighborhoods in which I grew up had a certain importance in shaping my political identity. However, the countries in which I have resided have helped me find my own personal identity, and with it; my political one. Several times I have been asked where am I from, and while I want to say that I'm from Nicaragua, there's always something that stops me. It's not lack of pride of my hometown, but it's because it doesn't seem fair to the other countries that have played their part in raising me and shaping me into the woman that I am today. At the time, one might not realize how much someone changed their life, or how an event completely changed them as a person, but in the end, one will be truly grateful for the events and people who helped them become who they are; just as I am. The day I met my best friend changed a lot of aspects of my life and helped shape my identity. She reminds me everyday of the strength I have and that has made me more confident. This has shaped my indentity because I am now stronger than I ever would have been without meeting her. • 17. Society : Identification And Identity Identification and identity are the labels or titles that individuals and groups of individuals put upon themselves. In contrast difference, often refers to how individuals see themselves, in comparison to the way that they are seen by others. Everything that an individual does, thinks, and feels relates back to the way that they identify them self and their identification. This identity is also known as sameness. Sameness helps to bond individuals making them feel as if they are a part of a group or a larger community. The way that individuals identify themselves, comparing and contrasting their differences to others is known as otherness. Otherness often leads to conflict among the groups being compared. Society defines individuals and groups of individuals by their differences. Race, religion, gender, sexuality, social status, and education are some of the main differences that society currently focuses on. These differences are then responsible for social negotiations. Society tries to balance or negotiate the needs of the majority, based on population size and group influence. The dominant groups values are taken into consideration and logical accommodations are made to benefit this group. From a metaphysical standpoint individuals are made up of identities and differences that have been accumulated over time to meet their needs and fulfill their expectations. Identities are the sets of meanings people hold for themselves that define "what it means" to be who they are as persons, as role occupants and as group members (PJB article) People are generally influenced by the norms and beliefs of society. A person's identity is formed through a combination of factors derived from social structure (macrosociology) and social interaction (microsociology). The self influences society through the actions of individuals thereby creating groups, organizations, networks, and institutions (PJB a soiciological approach to self and identity). In addition, individuals can also reinforce their identity by using status symbols in as part of their appearance. This can be in the form of a work uniform to signify an occupation, or in a fashion sense, the type of clothing worn is a silent statement of what sets you apart from others. PARAGRAPH 3 As Linton states, "a person holds a status, and performs a role". Simply put, a status is a position and a role is a set of behaviours. With each status, follows a certain role for us to take part in. People tend to adapt to roles, moving through different roles in fluency as student, son, friend.Because people tend to have many different statuses and therefore, many different roles, conflict occasionally occurs among the various roles. The concept of role conflict is "conflict among the roles connected to two or more statuses" (ref). A good example of role conflict lies in the working mother; she must take on the responsibilities of mothering the children at home while taking on the responsibilities of working outside the home, away from the children, in order to earn an income (RR). This kind of conflict involves roles which arise from separate statuses, but the same sort of conflict can occur from the roles of a single status. Role strain, then, is "tension among the roles connected to a single status". A teacher, for example, can be friendly with his or her students, but must remain objective in grading them. ... • 25. Societal Identity In Ender's Game What defines a person's self? Maybe it's something they decide about themselves, or maybe something quantifiable. In either case, everyone has some sort of Identity. Throughout the novel Ender's Game, Ender, unsurprisingly the main character, is always questioning who he is both to the rest of the world and to himself. This soul searching is a great catalyst for the plot to thicken. His identity crisis can be broken between three categories, societal identity, interpersonal identity and personal identity. When his monitor is taken off of him, he was attacked by a group of bullies. He subsequently defeated them, but did so in such a brutal way that he couldn't help but feel guilty of unnecessary violence. This is shown in the quote " Ender leaned his head against the wall of the corridor and cried until the bus came. I am just like Peter. Take my monitor away, and I am just like Peter."(Card 6). He also shows characteristics of Peter when he is first put on the space station with other recruits. When he is being harassed by a kid behind him, Ender anticipates the next blow and grabs the kid's arm, but he ends up breaking it (Card 26). He questions whether he broke the arm because he wasn't used to null gravity, or because he was angry and couldn't control his outburst. He displays this quality again later in the book too. When Ender is tested through a random computer generated simulation test, he gets upset after none of his solutions are working and turns to violence. This has a deep psychological effect on Ender because Peter is explicitly shown to be who he hates, so for him to become Peter is to become everything he's avoided trying to become. In the Oxford dictionary, "artifice" is defined as "clever or cunning devices or expedients, use to trick or deceive others." This foreshadows the deception that the writer exposes in the poem. Piercy describes a global dilemma the the use of metaphor (a bonsai tree). A bonsai tree is "an ornamental tree or shrub grown in a pot and artificially prevented from reaching its normal size." Here metaphor is established. The bonsai tree is being compared to the average woman. Like a bonsai tree, the average woman can become a distinguished figure and meet her full potential. For fear that the tree were to grow out of its pot, it may be alienated, it remains confined to its pot. A woman may feel inclined to stick to societal expectations for fear of being detached from others. Consequently, inside the pot, no woman or bonsai tree can grow to their fullest potential. Metaphorical use is also shown as Piercey compares the gardener to society. Continuously, society tries to mold women into being "domestic and weak." The gardener is shown doing this as he "carefully prunes" and "whittles back the branches." He is only declining the progression of the bonsai tree as he creates his own vision for it. In the attempt to be "attractive," the potential of the tree is taken and it continues to watch their branches be pruned and whittled away. Through an individual's intrinsic desire to develop meaningful connections with society, place or heritage, they forge their own sense of self–identity by overcoming the barriers in place. In Peter Skrzynecki's poetry, particularly "Migrant Hostel" and "10 Mary Street" we witness an individual's experience of segregation to eventual connection in the world they live. Skrzynecki's insightful poem "Migrant Hostel" explores the notion of impermanence and uncertainty in an individual's experience where stability is essential to develop an identity and sense of belonging. The poem illustrates the disorientating nature of a migrant hostel where the people within yearn for sanctuary in the Australian community. This idea is instantly reflected through the negative connotations in "no one kept count" representing a sense of anonymity in the atmosphere through a lack of individual significance. The enjambment and juxtaposition of the "comings" and "goings" highlights the transient and uncertain nature of the hostel environment where they were "left wondering who would be coming next". The intrinsic desire of human nature to develop meaningful bonds with people that share similar adversities is displayed through simile and symbol of a "homing pigeon circling to get its bearings". Furthermore, the alliteration in "memories of hunger and hate" convey their previous experiences hindering their search for harmony and permission into the broader community. The core idea of these techniques is to control the IP network congestion level which is the main cause of delays/losses, and also imposes upper bounds on these events. Traffic policing is one of the techniques used for this purpose. These techniques makes the assumption that users generating flows/calls will specify the setup time by using Service Level Agreement (SLAs) i.e. the characteristics of the traffic that they emit to the network. Some may grow up having the same values as their parents because it's what they are taught and they retain those values as they enter adulthood. They may be modified along the way, but it's not completely gone. Although family can help prevent us from committing poor choices through guidance, they can also hinder our ability to accomplish what we desire. In Janie's case, Nanny plays a significant part into shaping her identity. Since Janie and Nanny had only each other left, Nanny became very protective of Janie. In order for Janie to avoid experiencing the tragedy both her mother and grandmother went through, which was being raped and forced into a relationship, she wanted the absolute best for Janie. "As a former slave, the grandmother, Nanny, is haunted by the compensatory dream of making her first daughter, and then her granddaughter, something other than "the mule of the world," customary fate of the black woman." The woman who picked her nose was judged by society. The media people see every day is managed by society. This media is responsible for shaping and influencing the identity of people. In "The bear that wasn't", Frank Tashlin writes "Even as we struggle to define our unique identity, those groups attach labels to us that may differ from those we would choose for ourselves" (par.1). The bear in this story was told he was not a bear. Factory men convinced the bear he was just "a silly man who needs a shave and wears a fur coat" (par.13). The bear was left with no choice but to believe this. He was influenced by society which changed his identity. His personal values and beliefs went against Russian soldiers demands only because incidents before have had an impact on his character and they shaped his identity. Baba's image mattered, how other people saw him and how they treated him was a part of his personal values and self worth. Wealth, status and honor were how he was portrayed in front of society. Society pressure and judgment shaped Baba's identity and impacted his decisions. He was ashamed to tell everyone that he is Hassan's father, a father to a Hazzara. In the movie Sugar Cane Alley, directed by Euzhan Palcy, also known as Black Shack Alley, sets in the French colony of Martinique in the 19230s. It depicts a teenage boy named Jose lives with his grandmother and they both work in the sugar cane fields. Jose's education represents the justification of the sacrifices made for him. His grandmother has done so much for him, and worked her fingers to the bone, so that he might have more of a chance than the others working the fields every day. As she dies, I wonder whether she realizes how much Jose has truly developed, and that he has a good heart in his chest besides a good head on his shoulders. Outside influences have a strong capability to influence and alter our personal identity. Both directly and indirectly, the social contexts in which we live can change the way we think and feel, and by extension how we interact with other people and places. Immediate family, friendship groups and the physical environment are all factors which contribute to our ever changing perceptions of ourselves. Sometimes personal identity can be subtly reshaped over a gradual time frame, as our sense of who we are is modified without personal recognition that we are changing. At other times we may be able to notice our personal identity changing, through important life decisions. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is primarily our own decision to associate with a desired group of people. The way others see us, as well as the way we see ourselves can change as a result. In the movie Witness, it is evident that Rachel is quite fond of John Book. In the scene where she is dancing with him, a change in her identity becomes apparent. She steers away from all past influences from her family and religion, and is driven to act like John. She feels a need to relate to him, and is envious of his behaviour. Her behaviour then reflects a woman who is not of Amish belief, much to the dismay of her father. Where we are, in a general sense, refers to where we live. The aspects of where we are which relate to personal identity involve how the society is run, and its physical features. Different societies have a vast difference in laws, governments, religions, cultures and general ethics. These will then translate to how the people who live there choose to behave. A strict society with harsh regulations and punishments will cause people to be more reserved and controlled. A society with a high level of violence and unethical behaviour will usually cause future generations to act similarly. The physical features of a location can also influence behaviour and identity. For example, the residents of a society on the beach will have certain typical and expected behaviour, which then translates to a particular lifestyle. Identity is influenced by many factors in a person's life and is developed over many years. Identity is formed by an important combination of one's culture and one's action. This is seen best through parental influence in our lives, the type of environment we were brought up in, and our own personal choices that will ultimately define who we are. Essay on Figurative Language in A Work of Artifice Figurative Language in A Work of Artifice by Marge Piercy "A clever trick, crafty device, or stratagem" is how Webster's Encyclopedia of Unabridged Dictionary of the English Language defines Artifice. Marge Piercy definitely used "crafty" techniques in writing "A Work of Artifice." In this poem, Piercy reflects on the growth of a bonsai tree, considering the molded existence of what it is to what it could have naturally been. With deeper analysis of this poem, the correlation between a bonsai tree and the shaped role of women within society becomes evident. The poet introduces one specific metaphor in the beginning, comparing the growth of a bonsai tree to the development of women. This single metaphor is supported throughout ... Readers visualize an incredibly precise little gardener, as he diligently prunes the bonsai tree. Another of Piercy's lines' is, "could have grown eighty feet tall on the side of a mountain till split by lightning." Again the reader is provided with detailed illustrations and sounds that correlate with the picture. In this line, for instance, a magnificent tree high above the skyline, destroyed both by a visual bolt of lightening and a booming crack of thunder can be seen. Examples of imagery are abundant throughout Piercy's entire poem. As readers look at the poem externally, the imagery is directly related to a vision of the bonsai tree. With further internal analysis, it becomes evident that there is slight ambiguity within these lines, lending themselves to have connotative meanings. In such a way, the sense–provoking images the writer includes relate not only to describing a bonsai tree, but also to explaining the role of women within society. Specifically, the double meanings of the imagery can be deciphered through examination of the writer's use of metaphors. Each of the descriptions about the bonsai tree can be applied to women. There is extensive theory surrounding the contested understanding of the ways personal identity and (national) social identities are mutually informed. It can be argued that nationalism plays a role in shaping the personhood, as personal identity draws on the cultural aspects of national identity and integrates these ideas into individual self–understanding (Hearn 2007).
