• GENRE IS A GROUP OF DIFFERENT STYLES OF MUSIC, WITH HAVING A COMMON TRADITION
OR PROPER VALUES THAT THEY FOLLOW. GENRES CAN BE FURTHER DIVIDED INTO SUB
GENRES, AS THERE ARE MANY SUBGENRES THEY MAY LOOK NOTHING LIKE EACH OTHER,
BUT THEY EVOLVED THE SAME WAY AS THEY HAVE DONE FROM THE ORIGINAL GENRE.

3. About Genre
• MUSIC COMES IN A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT TYPES AND STYLES RANGING FROM
TRADITIONAL ROCK MUSIC TO WELL KNOWN POP. LOTS OF GENRES TEND TO
HAVE RICH HISTORY OR GEOGRAPHICAL SIGNIFICANCE OR MUSIC THAT HAVE
ROOTS WHICH GO BEYOND THE 20TH CENTURY.
4. Research
For our A2 music video, we have decided that the genre we would chose Indie Rock, I
have researched the two genres to help me understand the genre conventions.
5. Rock
• The genre of “rock” has a wide umbrella term which is used to describe a large variety
of musical styles. The original style of rock music is the fusion between two different
genres, Blues and Country, with a influence of jazz. The two styles of rock and roll was the
use of the snare drum.
• The movement of “rock and roll” was with the movement during the mid 1950’s
revolutionising the music scene of the West. The movement styled/shaped the trends in
fashion and lifestyle.
• The success Elvis influenced the success that rock and roll has on society.
• The first split of sub genres were in 1960 and 1970 when the popular subgenre of Hard
Rock and Heavy Metal. Well known contemporary artist like Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page
and Eric Clapton help mold the Rock music industry.
•The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Queen, AC/DC, The Who, Pink Floyd,
Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Nirvana.

6. Indie
• The indie genre is debated in term in that it is described through the bands label
background i.e. independent vs. mainstream labels, it is used to described to any
number of bands with there particular sounds regardless of which label carries them.
• The indie rock sound is related to earlier sounds of alternative rock it is often
disregarded from traditional mainstream qualities with bands which follow the
conventions of rock. The conventions which they follow are non-standard
instrumentation, unconventional song structures, obvious difference in sound on the
same record and the need for radio-friendly appeal.
• The term “indie” was being used in the mid-1980’s this was described the music
produced on post punk labels. Due to the number of indie rock record labels were
founded during this time.
• Again the term “indie rock” was associated with the bands and genres that remained
dedicated to their independent status.
