Informative: We will cut out and make a passport book. The first page will have
their picture and simple information like: name, grade and teacher. The pages
following will be fill in the blank, where they will be asked to draw the country’s
flag and simple facts on the country (food, animals, etc.) that are specific to that
country. They will get their information from guest speakers. Guest speakers will
be from the students’ parents or community members and will be asked through
invitation. Students will be broken into groups of two or three to work on this and
at the end of each day they will receive a stamp of accomplishment for the specific
culture. At the end of the week we will have a party to celebrate all the cultures.
They will be graded on completion and participation in the lessons.
10. Lesson Rationale
 Upon what assessment data or previous lessons are you building?
Answer: Before this lesson we spent some time looking into the geography of
continents and countries.
 WHAT requisite skills do students need in order to access the lesson & participate
fully?
Answer: Students need to understand the basics of what the world looks like. They
also need the skills of answering and asking questions and effectively listening to
the speaker.
 How does the content build on what the students already know and are able to do?
Answer: Since the students already know about the different countries now we want
to take that one step forward and research specific cultures that are within that
country.
 HOW does this lesson fit in the curriculum?
Answer: It is teaching students to listen and answer questions. Students will also be
working on communication skills while they work with each other. This lesson is
also tied into geography where the students will learn where these cultures are
located.
 By teaching this lesson, how will this add to student learning?
Answer: We are giving them an insight to different cultures.
 How does the lesson build on previous lessons or previous learning?
Answer: Since they already know the countries, this lesson will go one step deeper
so they understand each culture.
 How will the learning in this lesson be further developed in subsequent lessons?
Answer: After the lesson is finished, students will conduct a small project on the
culture of choice and write a short essay on it.
11. Instructional Strategies/Learning Tasks to Support Learning
Learning Tasks and Strategies
1. One day before the lesson is planned to start:
a. The teacher will explain the project in detail.
This includes creating rules with the students
for when the guest comes in, what are the
questions they will answer, the learning
objective and how to create the passport.
b. The teacher will then pass out the materials
for the passport. (Premade cover, front page
and information pages, yarn, scissors,
coloring utensils and a picture of the
student.)
c. Students will put together their book and
decorate it as they want.
2. The actual lessons
a. Remind the students of the expectations
b. Make sure they have all their materials
prepared ahead of time.
c. Have the speaker come in and give their
presentation
d. After allow time for questions and
exploration of the culture
e. Then students will sit at their desk and finish
what they need to in their passport books.
Teacher’s Role
1. Provide the
materials to
make the
passport
books.
2. Bring in guest
speakers.
(start inviting
at least a
month before
hand)
3. Collect the
passport
books every
day so the
students don’t
loose them
Students’ Role
1. Help the teacher create
expectations for having a
guest speaker.
2. Fill in their passport book
and make it unique to them.
3. Active listening to the guest
speaker
4. Ask questions to the
speaker
5. Complete the passport book
Rationale
I want the students to
be able to learn by
experience. This is
why I am bringing in
community members
and parents to talk
about their own
cultures.
Student Voice to gather
Students will be able to understand their culture a little more as well as others in the
classroom. From this they will make connections and compare to their own culture
with each other. And realize that just because it is a different culture there may be
similarities.
13. Resources and Materials
Plan
 Need guest speakers
 Premade passport books
 Scissors
 Cups with crayons
 Colored Pencils
 Yarn
 Picture of the students
 Glue
Rationale
The majority of the work will be by the
students filling in and decorating their
passport book.
14. Management and Safety Issues
Plan
Every student will remain at their seats
during the activity. When using scissors
they must stay in their seats no one
should be walking (or running) around
with scissors.
The teacher also much stay in the room
at all times while the guest is there.
Rationale
We want our students to be as safe as
possible. Whenever doing crafts they
need to stay in their seats.
The teacher needs to stay in the room for
liability issues.
12. Differentiated Instruction
Plan
I plan to have the students well aware of
the pre-knowledge that they need. Such
as practicing their listening skills and
being able to formulate questions. This
should not be used as individual work
but more towards group work.
Rationale
We want the students to learn and
practice these skills for their future as
students. We want them to be
comfortable asking questions as well as
learning the basics on how to work well
in a group.
14. Parent & Community Connections
Plan
I plan to invite in different parents and
community members to come talk about
their cultures.
Rationale
We want to do this so it is someone with
the highest experience. They also might
have different things from their culture.
For example: an instrument, a flag some
kind of art, etc.
