2. To better understand where students
are in their development
• Tests are diagnostic, and provide teachers with
detailed information on students’ difficulties
• With this information, teachers can target
interventions and see the next step each
student needs to take.

3. To monitor progress over time
• The growth in students’ knowledge and
understanding can be tracked through
longitudinal reports.
• The effectiveness of interventions and teaching
& learning strategies can be evaluated.

4. More than just skills are tested
• Number, algebra, geometry, measurement,
statistics & probability skills are assessed.
• Mathematical processes – understanding,
reasoning, fluency & problem-solving are also
assessed.
• Questions are mapped to the Australian
National Mathematics Curriculum

• Unlike NAPLAN, PAT online testing gives
detailed information and reports very quickly,
meaning teachers can act to address learning
issues immediately.
