What is competitive impromptu speech? In this (draft) presentation, I describe the structure and content of impromptu speech as it is practiced on the competitive speech and debate level. What is impromptu speech?
Impromptu is a public speaking event where students have seven
minutes to select a topic, brainstorm their ideas, outline and deliver a
speech. The speech is given without notes and uses an introduction,
body, and conclusion. The speech can be light-hearted or serious. It
can be based upon prompts that range from nursery rhymes, current
events, celebrities, organizations, and more.

What is impromptu speech?
The speaker is most commonly provided with their topic in the form of

but the topic may also be presented as
● an object,
● proverb,
● one-word abstract, or
● one of the many alternative possibilities.
Speeches tend to follow basic format and cover topics that are both
humorous and profound.
