As they tried to rebrand Community for wider appeal, the writers drew not only on old plot points
Harmon had set up in previously seasons, such as Jeff's relationship with his estranged father, but on
what they somewhat erroneously thought fans wanted to see (i.e. a romance between Britta and
Troy). Though many characters from the study group had commanding A–story lines in individual
episodes, the writers tried to focus in on Jeff's character growth in this season as he approached
graduation. The fifth episode, "Cooperative Escapism in Familial Relations," addressed Jeff's tense
relationship with his father. During Thanksgiving, Jeff confronts his dad and realizes that, though he
is a broken man because of his father's abandonment, Jeff does not need his approval to be the better

The critical social science paradigm is focused on oppression and empowerment. A researcher using
this paradigm to study a welfare policy might ask a question like, "does the new policy really help
the poor or does it keep them oppressed?" (Zwick, p. 57–58). And someone from this paradigm
analyzing a social documentary would ask the question, is this story being told through the lens of
the oppressed or the lens of the powerful/researcher? When examining The Last Samurai, Captain
Algren would be considered the researcher and the Samurai community would be considered the
oppressed.
The majority of this film was told through the lens of the powerful, or Captain Algren. From the
beginning of the film through nearly the end, the story is partly told through the Captain's personal
journal entries, which are narrated aloud. These are his private thoughts about what he is
experiencing while in Japan. Also, the audience sees on multiple occasions Algren's flashbacks of
the past when he fought in the Civil War. And lastly, Captain Algren is the main protagonist of the
tale and is present in almost every scene. Even in scenes that don't directly involve Algren (like
when Katsumoto 's son dies in a skirmish) the camera pans to Algren's face and focuses on how he

I have chosen to talk about the movie The Last Samurai. This is a movie that takes places in Japan,
with Captain Nathan Algren as one of the main characters. He was hired to lead an attack against a
rebellion of Samurais, who were opposing to the use of firearms. In the first battle, the Captain's
force and himself were badly wounded. The leader of the rebellion, whose name was Katsumoto
spares Captain Algren life and takes him into his town for recovery. Once healthy Captain Algren
learns the history, traditions and techniques of the Samurai.
By the time passing, he develops romantic feeling for Taka. Then he joins Katsumoto by telling him
that he would fight to protect Taka, her children, and Katsumoto. When they go to the final battle,
they lose heavily but never give up. Luckily Captain Algren still lived and when the Emperor was
going to decide to give the U.S right to sell firearms to Japan, he walks in and offers Katsumoto
sword to the Emperor. Then the Emperor realizes that its history is rich and important, so he
declines to give the U.S rights at that time. After that Captain Algren backs off and heads back to the
village where Taka and her children were waiting for them.

century c.e. The samurai warriors were great warriors that is why they were revered or were greatly
respected. To become a samurai they had to go through rigorous training that began in their
childhood. During samurai school they learned about many things like physical training, chinese
studies, poetry, and spiritual discipline. Young warriors studied Kendo, moral code of samurais. The
samurai also studied Zen Buddhism. The samurai wore different clothes depending on the situation
whether it be battle or just the average day. The clothing that they wore also was an indication of
status, their kimono or everyday wear consisted of an inner and outer layer usually made of silk.

by the Emperor of Japan to train his first ever japanese army to fight against the Samurai.
Katsumoto, the leader of the Samurai takes Algren as prisoner at first and eventually teaches him the
ways of his people. Captain algren is trapped between helping the Samurai or helping the japanese

so he took him under his wing. Katsumoto taught him the way of his people, the way they lives, and

responsible father trying to survive in a ruthless world in Westeros. In comparison, The Last
Samurai follows the life of Nathan Algren, a civil war veteran who uses alcoholic as a way to escape
from his traumatic past. Both Eddard and Nathan possess the same characteristics that makes them
similar to each other. Eddard and Nathan both acquire similar attributes of honour, responsibility
and compassion. Upon closer examination, however, we can see that they enact their identical
values differently.
First, Eddard from Game of Thrones and Nathan from the movie, The Last Samurai both show
honour but the way they demonstrate it was distinct. For instance, Eddard was a devoted man who
attained such honour. When he was young, he casts his dignity aside by bringing shame upon

The character I have chosen to analyze further is the little boy from the samurai village, Magojiro.
Magojiro is first introduced while Nathan Algren is being held inside their home. Throughout

Magojiro eventually even begins to look at Algren as a fatherly figure once again going against his
own culture to come to love an American. Magojiro cannot quite be qualified as a masculine
individual due to his age, he is a child. Being as he is still a child, he is very innocent and does not

For many years Japan isolated themselves from the world causing them to miss out on benefits of
the Industrial Revolution. Once Japan realized how far behind they were in technology, they opened
their gates to foreigners. This led the Boshin War, a civil war between the remaining Samurais and
the rest of the country pushing for a more modern and foreign influenced country. The film the "The
Last Samurai" does a wonderful job depicting Japanese culture during the Boshin War. It shows how
Japanese manners, fighting methods, clothing, honor, and ultimately their entire way of life is
different from those in the U.S.
The contrast between the American soldier, Captain Nathan Algren, and Japanese culture is apparent
within the first 10 minutes of the film. While having a meeting with Japanese men, his attitude
towards them is very rude and disrespectful, there clothes are much nicer, and their posture is
perfect. The Japanese men immediately pick up on this and comment on it. Other signs of bad
manners include Americans not understanding the cultural significance of bowing when greeting
someone. The scene where Algren walks into the home where he is staying and does not take his

Another example is the final battle that was between the samurai and the modernized army. As a
whole, this battle can be seen as old Japan against new Japan. The samurai represent the old Japan
because they are fighting for traditional customs and trying to keep things the way they are. The

Katsumoto Moritsugu.
Refusal of the call
Algren at first refuses the offer after having traumatic event of ambushing Native Americans during

The samurai's belief around death in the movie would be that they would treat it with respect and
honor, as that samurai has done there duty in service or they have done seppuku (suicide) as told by
their master or knowledgeable self. The Sources Beliefs around death is that the ideal samurai
warrior was supposed to be immune from the fear of death. Only the fear of dishonor and loyalty to
his daimyo motivated the true samurai. If a samurai felt that he had lost his honor (or was about to
lose it) according to the rules of bushido, he could regain his standing by committing a rather

conduct forbade suicide, in feudal Japan it was the ultimate in bravery. A samurai who committed

must have in order to serve their lord fully. These skills range from having wisdom, to having
courage for every task that must be done. The reason that these virtues are important is because they
exemplify the samurai of old, who were decreasing in number. Each virtue Yamamoto describes is
important to a samurai, since it would form the keystone of his values. As such, Yamamoto starts out
with why a samurai should value death, even in when they have a fifty percent chance to live. For
the first value, Yamamoto highlights that death is not a terrible choice for a samurai. However,
Yamamoto makes a clear connection between a fanaticism and honor. Specifically, he states that a
samurai can keep their honor intact, even if they are unable to accomplish their task, and end up
appearing as a fanatic. Such a principle would require good judgment on the part of the samurai, or
as Yamamoto put it, it would require the virtue of wisdom. Wisdom, for anyone, is a difficult virtue
to obtain and must be exercised carefully. Even though a samurai might have wisdom, he must use it

Unlike Seibei Iguchi, Nate Algren isn't bound to anything except maybe the guilt of his own moral
conscience. However, the fundamental ideals of Western authority and romanticism is what makes
the Last Samurai a truly unique film. This concept of romanticism is evident throughout the film in

was captured, and taken to their village, for the intention of learning the samurai's new enemy.
