Comparing Night And Fog
The Holocaust will go down as one of the most prolific genocides of all time, true evil. Not only were six million Jews slaughtered, but villages and
towns were destroyed as well. Even today, the Holocaust still has a large presence on the Jewish community. Many scholars have described how evil
is a good representation of the Holocaust, but Richard Rubenstein, Primo Levi, as well as Alain Resnais' film Night and Fog, are all great sources that
provide not only how the Holocaust is an evil with outsider but insider viewpoints as well. There is no doubt that the Holocaust is an example of evil,
many contradict this statement. Many say that the Nazis are to be blamed for this piece of history, while others will argue that the act of God is to...

Without a doubt evil can be associated with this event. Levi's, Rubenstein's, and Resnais' viewpoint from their different pieces of work, emphasize
this greatly. Although neither of these men had a theodicy to go along with the Holocaust, each view coincides with one another to help prove how
evil this event was. Evil is within all of us, everyone is capable of these events, but that does not mean that all people are evil. Levi discusses the
personal account of a man inside Auschwitz, and the horrors that went on there. He writes about the evils he not only had to witness, but experience
as well. Resnais does this as well through his film, showing not only the conditions and whereabouts of the camp, but also showing the horrendous
affects the camp had on the prisoners. Lastly, Rubenstein explains through his writing that poor morals led to these events down the road, not the act
of God. Rubenstein believes that God could never spare six million lives to prove himself to people, that would questions God's superhuman power.
All three of these works prove how the Holocaust is an evil, not only did bad morals lead to this destruction, but those who turned a blind–eye to it as
well. What is done is done, and there is no going back, but we can learn from these events and teach ourselves that no evils like the ones that took
place seventy–two years ago can ever happen again.

Significance of Fog in Long Day's Journey into Night...
Long Days Journey: The Significance of Fog (8)
A Long Day's Journey Into Night, by Eugene O'Neill, is a deeply autobiographical play. His life was rampant with confusion and addictions in his
family. Each character in this play has a profound resemblance, and draws parallels and connections with a member of his own family. The longjourney
that the title of the play refers to is a journey into his past. Fog is a recurring metaphor in the play; it is a physical presence even before it becomes a
crucial symbol of the family's impenetrable confusion. It is referred to in the text as well as stage directions in this play. It sets the mood for the play in
all its somber hues.
He uses the fog outside the house as an atmospheric element that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There's no fog in the harbor. I'm sure the spell of it we've had is over" (O'Neill 736). The introductory image establishes the fog as both the
intermediary and a symbol of Mary's addiction. The fog is easily identifiable as Mary's morphine high, representative of her cloudy mental state.
Mary sinks back into her addiction as the night falls and slowly regresses further away from reality and her family. The fog signifies the state of
mind that she is in. Fog has a dense and opaque quality that creates low visibility and blocks out the sun. The fog described in the stage directions is
"...as a white curtain drawn down outside the windows" (O'Neill 773).
Mary tells Cathleen how she loves the fog, which can be interpreted as her love for the morphine that removes her from any type of coherence.
Mary was on a path to recovery and now has slowly lapsed into her state of addiction once again. She likes this state because " It hides you from the
world and the world from you. No one can find or touch you any more" (O'Neill 773). For Mary, this fog is representative as an alternative or refuge
from reality. Her relapse into addition causes clouds her judgment and impairs her sight. She can hide herself in the fog so that her family can be
oblivious to her addiction.
"Mary, however, is not alone among the "fog people" – the three men also have their reasons for withdrawing into night" (Brustein 1021). Each of
these men is haunted by his individual past and this

Advancing the Individual's Knowledge of the Holocaust Essay
By comparing, analyzing and questioning the validity of Maus I and II, Night, Night and Fog, nonfictional historical accounts and a poem, called
Already Embraced by the Arm of Heavenly Solace, found in Europe in the Contemporary World, Schindler's List and the Return to Auschwitz we may
determine to what degree these sources serve to advance humanity's understanding of the holocaust. The holocaust can be explained as the historical
event in which the Nazi's, who came to power in Germany in January 1933, and its collaborators murdered and persecuted approximately six million
Jews. This came about because of the German belief that they were "racially superior" and the Jews were an alien threat to the German state. For
humanity to advance in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The conclusions of the various sources, brought on by the analysis of the issues above and by comparing these sources to each other, determined that
overall these sources have a high degree in serving to further man's understanding of the holocaust.
By categorizing the two movies, Night and Fog and Schindler's List, together we are able to better analyze and contrast the two similar yet different
sources. First off, both these sources can be deemed accountable because they use more than one source. The documentary, Night and Fog, uses two
different survivors of the holocaust as well as various other sources. Schindler's List also relied on more than one person's account of the situation to
write the movie's script. This is unlike the sources such as Return to Auschwitz, written by the first–hand account of Kitty Hart , and Night, written by
Elie Wiesel who also had first–hand experiences , that depend on one person's account or report of the situation to tell the story. However, the written
work isn't used for entertainment purposes, like Schindler's List is, and therefore is less likely to be changed to draw attention or gain financially.
Schindler's List is a famous movie used to

Chapter 5 Questions For Thought
Chapter 5 Questions for Thought 1. Explain the reasoning behind the wintertime expression, "Clear moon, frost soon"? On clear, calm nights,
objects and the earth surface cools off by emitting infrared radiation. This cooling effect is more rapid on clear night than cloudy nights since there
is no clouds to emit back to the surface. Hence the phrase "clear moon, frost soon". The cool surface is then mixed with air above it, which will
eventually cool to the dew point and water vapor will appear on the cooled surfaces. If the temperature continues to fall in the freezing range then the
dew will freeze and frost will form. 2. Explain why icebergs are frequently surrounded by fog? Fog surround icebergs due to advection fog. This type...

If the fog is too thick then the sunlight is blocked and the fog may not dissipate. This is common during the day in the central valley of California,
where a strong inversion also slows the dissipation by keeping the warm air above the fog. At night, radiation cooling take effect to cool the air
temperature and fog forms again. This process can last for days and even weeks. Pg120 10. Near the shore of an extremely large lake, explain why
steam fog is more likely to form during the autumn and advection fog in early spring? During autumn in the northern hemisphere it is safe to say
the air is likely to be cold while large body of water such as lake are slow to emit their heat away. When the cold air moves over the warmer water
steam fog is produced. In early spring, if there is significantly cooler difference between the cold surface and the air above the cold surface then the
warm air is chilled and advection fog is created. Pg120–122 11. The air temperature during the night cools to the dew point in a deep layer, producing
fog. Before the fog formed, the air temperature cooled each hour about 2 C. After the fog, the air temperature cooled by only 0.5 C each hour. Give
two reasons why the air cooled more slowly after the fog formed? During the night the air is cooled more slowly because the fog traps the infrared
energy that is emitted from the earth and secondly, latent heat is released as fog is formed.pg 124 12. On

Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde Theme Essay
The theme of the book is basically good vs evil and split personality. Mr Utterson tries to solve the case of Dr Jekyll's will that's linking to the
mysterious man Mr Hyde. No one in London knows who Mr Hyde is, and the few people who saw him described him as "weird" and slightly
"deformed". In the first chapter, Mr Utterson said Mr Hyde is "Not easy to describe". And that there is something "wrong with his appearance;
something displeasing, something downright detestable", and "He must be deformed somewhere; he gives a strong feeling of deformity, although I
couldn't specify the point. He's an extraordinary–looking man". Dr Jekyll, on the other hand, is a wealthy rich man in London and is well–liked,
respectable doctor. The two seems nothing alike, which is why Mr Utterson is trying to crack the case of the link between Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and
why Mr Hyde is mentioned in Dr Jekyll's will.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His appearance is a symbol of evil. Whenever someone looked at him they were instantly disgusted at the sight of him. Much like Mr Hyde and Dr
Jekyll, their respective homes are very much alike themselves, the difference can be seen when the wealthy Dr Jekyll lives in a well–appointed house,
which has "a great air of wealth and comfort." While the house that Mr Hyde lives in is nothing like the house of Dr Jekyll. The main house
symbolizes the wealth of Dr Jekyll, but his laboratory symbolizes Mr Hyde. The laboratory is described as "a certain sinister block of building
...which bore in every feature the marks of profound and sordid negligence." which symbolizes the corrupted Mr Hyde. Rather than just focusing on
one part of the city, the story sets in many different locations in London. The place that Mr Hyde lives is very dark and dingy. The city at night much
more mysterious and dangerous, so the night is also a symbolism of Mr

Reflective Essay On Night And Fog
There was a point in time, when the Holocaust tragedy transpired, where the Nazi's committed genocide during World War II. In this day in age, the
world looks back upon these ultimate crimes against humanity, when these atrocities occurred, believing this could never feasibly happen again in our
time. Alain Resnais created the self–reflective documentary film, Night and Fog, to act as a warning to the audience that the tragic significance of the
Holocaust was a past reality and always will threaten humanity by its ability to return and become our present reality.
The circular narrative of the film began in the present, reverts to the past, while returning in the end to the present time. With Resnair's circular
narrative, he was able to show ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As the visual display of black and white screen shots shown throughout the film, Resnais wanted to problematize the relationship between the horror
and a kind of cultural memory (where one would want to forget). By exploring the impossibly of adequately representing the brutality of the camps
according to the lectures. To which the question was asked "If the camps cannot be represented, what does it say about our capacity to remember?"
During the montage sequence with the train moving through the fog in the dark of night, as the lectures referred to as a metaphor for what we can
know about something like this; genocide under night and fog so no one would know what was happening. These powerful visual images of the past,
are revealed by camera as previously covered by the night. From the past, documented images contain stillness from a fixed point similar to what the
lectures refers to historical consciousness. Compared to the present day footage with Resnais using subjective camera shots from the viewers point of
view, as if the viewer is walking down the tracks; while opening the camera up into long shot that leads to the gates of front door of the concentration
camp. Through continuous editing, the relationship between the trains shown in the black and white footage and the train track shown during present
time, represent the moral dilemma humanity faces as naturalistic memory fades. As the lectures states, things growing over, nature taking its course,
but still the tracks are there towards the camp. With Resnias stating in the film, "Today, on the same track, the sun shines. Go along it, looking for

Role Of Weather In The Great Gatsby
It's More Than Just Rain or Snow In reality the weather and environment play a part in how people interact with one another and in some cases it can
even influence a person's mood. Therefore, weather also plays a similar role in literature as it does in reality. The only difference is that in literature
the significance of weather impacts the story more and has much sub–contextual meaning than what is just portrayed on the surface level. Within
different stories different types of weather can symbolize different things. In the novel, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Fitzgerald uses
fog to serve as a symbol for Gatsby's and Daisy's relationship. His choice for using fog as a symbol of their relationship is because it obscures
Gatsby's vision of the green light on Daisy's house which, for Gatsby, it acts as a beacon letting him know where Daisy is. Also, it acts as a method
of foreshadowment. Realistically, fog obscures one's vision and it renders the viewer "blind" to what's around them due to the fact that the fog
encapsulates the person in a visual area that is generally only immediately in front of you. For example, the purpose of a lighthouse is to ... Show more

Analysis Of Strawberry Spring By Stephen King
Stephen King is the author of many novels and short stories with creepy settings; King admits that he even has a fear of bugs to add to the list of
things that freaks him out. In one of his earlier short stories from 1976, several women at New Sharon Teachers' College fall victim to a "Jack the
Ripper" style character with a mysterious fog that weighs heavy over the campus. King, the narrator, also a student, leads us on a twisted tale in a
foggy New England town to search who committed the horrifying acts. My analysis of King's use of the literary elements, together with his
history of horror reflected from his short story, "Strawberry Spring" ( The Fact Site, 8 Apr. 2017) Author Stephen Edwin King was born on

several years. King graduated from Lisbon Falls High School in 1966 and attended the University of Maine at Orono and wrote for the school's

Night And Fog Analysis
In the poetic documentary Night and Fog, Alain Resnais uses images, sounds, music and narration to portray the message that humanity must learn
from its past.
The film begins with the landscape of what was once a concentration camp that murdered captives in the Holocaust, soft music plays in the background,
and the voice of Micheal Bouquet speaks about the past. As the film progresses more images are presented: normal facilities used for torture, skeletal
bodies being bulldozed, and an aerial view of masses of woman's hair is shown. These dark images are connected to the softening tone in the music,
introducing a glimpse of hope as the one sees barbaric actions that occurred.
The photographs paired with the sound of both the voice and music challenges questions. The man speaking provides little information, but certainly
not the amount one would expect in a documentary. This ambiguity leaves open–ended questions, which challenges the viewers to ... Show more

The voice warns viewers against re–living the past. The voice approaches it by prodding the audience into internal thought, hoping one can be a new
hope and follow a new guidance on a better path. "Those of us who pretend to believe that all this happened only once, at a certain time and in a
certain place... those who do not know history are destined to repeat the past (Furman, 2005)." Because this film is released only ten years after the
war, it reminds the audience that they are hope for the future. It emphasises that while no one will forget, no one shall dare go through the trauma
again. The films main message is a warning. It evokes in all the viewers the reality of evil, and its presence in society. "Resnais attempts to create a
realism that encourages his audience to recognize their own moral responsibility for the event he represents (Rice,

Documentary Films Have Played an Important Part in...
Documentary films and their representations of the Holocaust have served not only to speak their В‘truth' of the atrocities but also to document
changing paradigms of social thought concerning Holocaust В‘truth'.
Holocaust History and its documentation:
Theodor Adorno's famous 1949 injunction that В‘to write poetry after Auschwitz is barbaric' is indicative of the initial approaches of documentary to
the subject matter.
The first documentary footage of the Holocaust was shot as Allied troops entered the camps of Bergen–Belsen and Dachau, but this footage was

The narration is more than a call to arms, a jolt to the collective memory. Thefilm is an apt social commentary on the broader issues of the crimes of
humanity and those who stand on the sidelines. In this way, Resnais' purpose, self–admittedly an indirect attack on the French involvement in conflicts
in Algeria and Indochina, becomes broadly understood. The film is very much symptomatic of the 1950s. For the contemporary audience, the lack of
any extensive reference to the specifically ethnic nature of the genocide is indicative of a reluctance to see the deportations as unique, individual
narratives, a tendency that would later be countered in Shoah. The word В‘Jewish' for instance is mentioned only once in the narration when the
narrator counts В‘Stern, a Jewish student from Amsterdam' (Night and Fog). Similarly, censorship

motive looks like to force the audience to observe the real result and purpose of the concentration camps. I salute the director of this film, Alain
Resnais for detailing such happenings on a definitive documentary that even future generations will check out and grieve over actions perpetrated by
other human beings. All things being equal, the Holocaust and also all demonstrations of genocide were a horrific occasion that the world needs to

Weather In Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde Essay

ego, Mr. Hyde. Weather is also an excellent representation of the situational moods in the novel. The purpose of the weather is to look into other
themes of the book and expose the dual nature of the human character throughout the novel. Weather such as fog and gloom represent the moral
ambiguity Dr. Jekyll feels as his sinful nature overcome the character of Mr. Hyde. When it is shown Dr. Jekyll forged the letter he said was from Mr.

featured in the collection, is a clear example of his early artistic period, which coincides with his first approach to photography itself.
In the scene we can see the main element, a monument representing the illustrious French military commander Michel Ney (which gives the title to the
entire work), positioned on the extreme left, dominating the mid and upper third, while in the lower one it is possible to notice a round fence that

Undoubtedly, without that luminous minutia, the picture wouldn't have the same appeal. The photo is generally soft, since it doesn't convey plenty of
details (given the evident atmospheric disturbances) but when focusing on the main physical components present in the scene, in particular, the
intricate decor on the fringe of the fence, it is possible to notice an unexpected sharpness, probably achieved with more precision in post–production.
Because of that, the use of colours and lights appears to be particularly relevant. The exploitation of hidden backlight sources in this night photography
gives the perception of a much stronger and dramatic contrast, enriching the smooth grayscale palette used for the background. The boldly black
silhouette stands out majestically in the dense grey mist, and the letters of the sign appear with some sort of mystic grandeur, also acting as a key
light point. It's impossible not to focus on them and not to notice their evident difference, their belonging to different "worlds".The depiction of neon
is also significant: this kind of light is blueish and extremely cold. Consequently, it's the complete opposite of the typical warm light provided by
lampposts, always used to portray Paris by night to convey a sense of romanticism.
Moreover, the picture is not exactly frontal, as the angle of the fence suggests: this slight curvature accentuates, even more, the

Theme Of Water In Rime Of The Ancient Mariner
Written Task 2 The Symbol of Water within Samuel Coleridge's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner Romantic literature writers commonly input elements
of nature within their writing to express their opinions. Samuel Taylor Coleridge includes the most abundant form of nature, water, within The Rime of
the Ancient Mariner. Water, in its various forms, symbolizes the power and force of nature in both the natural and spiritual world. Water in the form of
ice represents imprisonment and the harsh acts that nature imposes as a punishment. The Mariner – the main character of the ballad– says that "the ice
was all between. / The ice was here, the ice was there, / the ice was all around", essentially imprisoning him within it (58–60). Repeating the word...

While surrounded on the ship, there is "water, water, everywhere. / Nor any drop to drink" for the mariner and his crew because the ocean is all made
of salt water (121–122). Nature torments the crew by not letting them have any fresh water as punishment for their actions, and the irony of the
drought is how there is "water everywhere" but they still are in a drought, constantly being teased by nature; also, in attempts to describe the degree
of irony, "water" is repeated twice highlighting the access of water that is unavailable. The water is also described as "like a witch's oils" which
"Burnt green, and blue, and white" (129–130). Water is compared by a simile to "witch's oils", equating the necessary resource of water to other
evil–related liquids; this in–turn de–values the water that they need to live, and continues the entrapment of the crew as punishment. Nearing the end
of the passage, water still "rumbled on, / Still louder and more dread" in a never–ending torment of water and imprisonment (547–548). Water
continuously represents the harsh punishments of nature, specifically eliciting fear in the Mariner as words such as "dread and rumbled" impose fear
and stun the Mariner, during the falling action of the ballad. Nature barrages the Mariner with punishment using irony and imprisonment through the
element of water excessively. Samuel Taylor Coleridge's writing

How Did Alice Become A Vampire
Alice let her ice blue eyes sweep over the crowded room before her gaze fell upon the Master Vampires. She needed air. Needed a way to escape
this stuffy crowded ballroom before she went insane. Dropping her gaze back onto the group she stood with, Alice took a small step back before
turning on the heel of her shoe, then vanishing into the crowd. Placing her empty wine glass down on a passing tray, Alice stopped one last time,
before pushing the glass door open that led onto the balcony. A rush of cold air blasted her pale angelic face, and a small fanged smile appeared as
she slipped through the crack, and into the night. Sitting on the edge of the stone balcony, she let her ice blue eyes sweep over the foggy castle
gardens. Fog around the castle was common, and it took her a long time to get used to it. Though she was a vampire, fog for some unknown
reason made her slightly uneasy. Even before she became immortal, fog normally scared her, and she rarely liked to be in it. Since becoming a

Throughout history, Holocaust is the most unforgettable in the history because by studying of the past to understand the present, we could learn that
the human beings possess the power to control our behavior and we could aware of the importance of making choice and come to realize that one

Comparison Between Night And Fog
In 1956, just a few years after the Holocaust came to an end, director Alain Resnais released the documentary Nuit Et Brouillard meaning Night and
Fog. The film is presented in both color and black and white, and is narrated in French by Michael Bouquet. In the film, the abandoned grounds of
Nazi concentration camps Auschwitz and Majdanek are pictured. As images of the camps are shown, the narrator describes one of the most
devastating historical events in detail. Each element of the film come together to create an incredibly raw and evocative portrayal of the atrocities that
occurred during the Holocaust. The director of Night and Fog, Alan Resnais, had a great interest in creating films that were concerned with war. This
interest may be due in part to his own involvement in the armed forces when he was a young adult. This particular piece of his work was extremely
successful, and it is considered by many to be the most important film addressing the Holocaust. When compared to most work centered around the
Holocaust, Night and Fog is an incredibly honest depiction of the atrocities that occurred.
Many creative elements that contribute to the overall impact of the film are incorporated in Night and Fog. Present day images of the abandoned
concentration camp grounds are shown in color, whereas flashbacks of the camps during the Holocaust are shown in black and white. As the images
are shown the film is being narrated in French by Michael Bouquet. He maintains a dark and

Sadism In Night And Fog
Assuming that directors make films on genocide to raise awareness and to move people to act for justice, the films we have seen in class try to reflect
that theory. Night and Fog is a 1955 French documentary short film directed by Alain Resnais created ten years after to the liberation of Nazi
concentration camps. The film was composed of shots of the camps making it graphic in nature. It alternates between the present and past using
black and white and color shots. They show the Auschwitz remnants while the narration is going on with the scenery. The issue of sadism is raised
upon the prisoners with things such as medical experimentation, torture, and prostitution. The graphic scenes of the bodies and the chambers are
disconcerting to say the least. I think the use of the music along with black and white images are overused leaving the audience in shock, thus
raising full awareness. If it were up to me I would not use as much graphic images at he did. It is one of the movies you cannot forget about due to
the images that are engraved in your mind. Resnais switches to color to and narrates with little to no music which blends well in order to give the
audience a break from the horrific images. The color shots are not vibrant so the translations from black and white to color is not disturbing to the eye.

Night And Fog Analysis
Night and Fog is a short French documentary released in 1956, directed by Alain Resnais. Night and Fog feature two–abandoned concentration camp
grounds, Auschwitz, and Majdanek. The film is renowned as an artistic piece that captivates the complexity of trauma that "transformed the post–war
documentary" to "dismantle the realist mode that offered a transparent, conclusive, and morally reassuring account of historical trauma" (Kennelly).
Resnais technique to transition/changeover from black and white to colour footage parallels the past and present to reinforce the lasting effects trauma
imposes on one's mind, body and soul, both individually and within a community. The film follows a linear path/order, beginning with a pan–shot in

Traumatic memory is inflexible, and invariable, often uncovering traumatic memories is a timely process; intensely emotional and arousing
experiences cannot be adapt within the memory system, which can result in dissociation and the construction of traumatic memories (Explorations,
164). Thus, Night and Fog is arguably not a long enough film to witness the Holocaust, in contrast to Shoah and nine and a half hour film, by Claude
Lanzmann, who argues his film captivates to obscenity to understanding such trauma. Also, the changeover from black and white to colour alludes to
the recovery of memories, in essence, the grim fragmented images suggest flashes of memory, such that a survivor may endure flashbacks of their past.
Arguably, Cayrol is used as a mode to captivate the experience of a survivor, and the road to recovery rather than striving to present a perfect
representation of the Holocaust, by providing an imperfect narrative, the viewer gains clarity to the complexity of trauma. There are inherent
differences between narrative and traumatic memory; for example, narrative memory challenges the mental constructs, which enable humans to make
sense of their experiences. Thus, depending on one's psychological state, that being immersed in familiar and expectable in contrast/juxtaposition to
frightening and novel experiences often do not fit easily into existing cognitive schemes (Exploration, 160). The films' unsettling images corresponding
with Cayrol's apathetic voiceover and the powerful imagery, such as "the medicines were make–believe, the dressings mere paper, the same ointment is
used on every sore. "Sometimes the starving ate their dressings"

Somewhere among us, there are lucky Kapos, reinstated officers and unknown informers. There are those who refused to believe this, or believed it

Semi Truck Collision
A high–speed collision with any vehicle can be devastating. However, a high–speed collision of a car with a semi truck often has a grim outcome for
the motorist. The rear underride guards of semi trailers don't offer much in the way of a crumple zone for absorbing impact energy.
Damaged or rusted guards offer virtually no protection at all. In addition, hitting one at an offset (with the front left or right side of your car) causes
severe damage to the car and may demolish the area occupied by the driver or right front passenger. Finally, a high–speed collision with the side of a
trailer, which lacks an underride guard, can shear off the top half of a car.

Fog obscures clear visual references that you rely on to judge speed, and produces the illusion of going too slow. This phenomenon, combined with
an impaired ability to judge distance, can cause a fatal delay in applying the brakes when you do sense that you're closing in on a truck. Slow down
and keep an eye on your speedometer. Don't "out drive" the distance that you can see in front.
Trucks with Dirty Trailer Lights and Reflectors
Without working lights or reflectors, the trailer of a semi truck at night is invisible. It's rare for a trucker to drive around with all of his trailer lights
burnt out. On the other hand, lights and reflectors covered in dirt, mud, or salt are more common. Dirt covered lights and reflectors are just as
hazardous as not having them at all.
What appears to be an oncoming semi truck in the opposite lane could be a truck pulling into the lane from a side road to your right. The lights you see

Nevertheless, while they both were created to move their audience, the motivation behind the two are quite different. "Night and Fog was created to

To do so, Andrew Jarecki portrays a sense of innocence and ambiguity from the alleged perpetrators, and victims.. One of the most profunding ways in
which a sense of ambiguity is portrayed within this work is the absence of recollection. Within the film Arnold Friedman confesses to the fact that as a
child, he sexaully assaulted his younger brother while in bed. However, when his brother is asked about this instance, he denies it all and claims it
never happened. These moments are then paired with other instances of ambiguity such as the montage of interviews where former students will speak
upon an instance of sexual assault within the computer classes, only to then have another former student deny every claim previously made. This
absence of a universal truth works to make viewers question whether or not the assault happened. This ambiguity is then accompanied by home videos
of the family dealing with infighting, denial, and total frustration with the entire process: in effect humanizing the men. Through this humanization its
becomes increasingly harder for an audience to find guilt in the men. This process of reflexivity, allows audiences to view the stories of these two men
from a different standpoint, and come to a different conclusion in regards to guilt of these men, than of before. In effect the audience can be moved to

Night and Fog vs Triumph of the Will Essay
"Triumph of the Will" and "Night and Fog," portray Hitler's vision for Germany, and the findings of Allied liberators of concentration camps in the
beginning of World War II. A comparison of the films present two very different views of what Hitler deemed necessary for Germany. They each
displayed propaganda in a way they're eye–catching simply because of the raw footage. It took everything that we knew about pre WWII and
corrected it, so that we knew the truth about how the people of Germany felt, and what they saw in those exact moments. The task of viewing these
films was quite difficult, and although both films seem to be a highly emotional and factual, I believe that "Night and Fog" was a more superior piece

If Hitler is not on the screen, he is always an assumed to be present. The object of the mass's gaze, the erotic object of the mesmerized, ecstatic

loved by so many; it is almost as if it were to be too good to be true, and it was. It's hard to see any realism in this film, like it was scripted instead. As
said previously, a convincing piece of propaganda shows the viewer hope, but also reality, and in the film, it looks anything but realistic.
In Night and Fog it was an appropriate design the way the switched from color to black and white. I got two different meanings from this. 1) We live
today in our present environment in a world filled with color. We don't go through hunger, torture and our dignities aren't taken from us. The black and
white represents to me other people around the world which still today are going through similar times as these victims in this film went through. 2)
The theme in on which the comparison is about the past and the present was very clear. The same pathways which were filled with the blood of the
victims were now all buried under the ground. The color represented the present and the black and white represented the past.

The Viewer Is The Witness In 'Night And Fog'
How the Viewer is the Witness in Night and Fog Alain Resnais' "Night and Fog" is a Holocaust documentary shot in 1955 that served as a lens into
the hellish landscape of the Holocaust. It was shot with footage of the Holocaust combined with a voiceover narration that provides a detailed look into
the horrors of the Holocaust. The film proved to be a success but it struggled through censorship due to its inherent gruesome nature. This is because the
film uses various techniques in such a way that the viewer of the film feel that they themselves have become witnesses of these tragedies, as opposed to
just being a viewer of a documentary about the Holocaust, thus making the viewer experience of the film much more impactful. Traditional
documentaries use interviews and first hand witness accounts to tell the story, but Night and Fog does not. It presents everything objectively and lets
the powerful, fast paced cinematography and narration tell the story. Another technique used is the rapid juxtaposition shots from the past and present,
thus giving the film a sense of timelessness. The last technique used is toward the end when the narrator asks the harrowing question whether or not ...

Analysis of 'Night and Fog' Essay
"The effective war film is often the one in which the action begins after the war, when there is nothing but ruins and desolation everywhere..."
Francois Truffaut
Francois Truffaut continued on to say that Alain Resnais' Night and Fog, made in 1955, was the "greatest film ever made". The 30–minute film based on
the horrors of the Holocaust and Nazi concentration camps after World War II combines Resnais' own cinematography with original images and footage
of the captives in their unfathomable state. The film is lead with a somber narrative that not only accompanies the sobering images being shown but
both compliments them and puts them into perspective. Carl R. Plantigna's chapter from his book 'Rhetoric and Representation in ... Show more content

For example, the shot at approximately 9:05 that shows an image of naked, skeletal prisoners waiting in line where the voice–over narrates "nudity
strips the inmates of all pride in one stroke" demonstrates this authoritative position as the voice is dry and matter–of–fact in contrast to the horrifying
image, yet it is somber with empathy. Together with image choice, music and cinematography, this 'Voice of God' narration personifies the films
perspective in order to not only show but to explain to the viewers the meaning of what is on the screen.
Plantigna deliberates on various differences between the fiction and non–fiction filmmaker, particularly the role of imagination to the two differing
styles of film. He discusses that the fiction filmmaker "freely creates imaginative events", where the non–fiction filmmaker "portrays or makes explicit
claims about actual historical events" (104). He then puts forth the idea that imagination is also important for the non–fiction filmmaker as he as the
creator "decides how to represent historical events" (104). This is demonstrated in shot 237 where Resnais' camera pans over the ceiling of a gas
chamber that has been carved in and scored by human fingernails and the voice–over narrates, "the only sign–but you have to know–is this ceiling, dug
into by fingernails". Here, Resnais using his imaginative ability, has seamlessly

The photo "Statue of Marshal Ney in the Fog" was taken by the famous artist BrassaГЇ in 1932, one year before the publishing of his book "Paris de
Nuit", a collection of night photographies of the French capital, mostly representing empty gardens and streets in the rain and fog. The picture,
featured in the collection, is a clear example of his early artistic period, which coincides with his first approach to photography itself.

Radiation Fog In California
Every winter the Central Valley experiences radiation fog that forms across the area. The Central Valley in California has ideal conditions for
radiation fog to form. The valley is between a coastal mountain range on the West Coast and on the east side is where the Sierra Nevada mountains
sit (Herckes, et. Al). Due to this topography of this area air masses become stagnant and ventilation of the valley is hindered (Herckes, et. Al). The
lack of ventilation in the valley leads to temperature inversions, because of high pressure systems that form of the Great Basin (Herckes, et. Al). This
leads to radiation fog forming because of inversion during nights in which a layer of moist air is below a layer of drier air (Ahrens and Sampson 97).

at a lighter judgement, and Dr. Jekyll's purity is being represented by the atmosphere at the start of the novel. On the contrary, the shadows and casting

I must say that this film is very traumatizing. There are some images in this film that will be burned and scarred into my mind for as long as I live.
I have seen many holocaust films, but no one was as near as dramatic and depicting as Night and Fog. However I did like the theme of this movie. It
is very sad but yet realistic. Our minds are murky and dull. We tend to only remember the important situation in our lives. Yet we don't remember the
importance of our own history. I say OUR history be cause we all are human beings on this earth. Whether we believe in Allah, Jesus, Jehovah, or
whatever higher power, we are all one race, and that the human race. It is very sad to know that human beings were treated and ... Show more content on

2) The theme in which everyone in class agreed on which the comparison about the past and the present was very clear. The same pathways which
were filled with the blood of the victims were now all buried under the ground. The color represented the present and the black and white
represented the past. The music helped in elaborating this great film. As I mentioned in class different instruments helped create different moods
for different scenes in the movie. We heard the cello and the violin to create sadness and remorse. The flute created eeriness and the trumpet
created awareness. I thought these were instruments and tools that help make this film extraordinary. I think the director did a great job in filming
this movie. He didn't take any credit for his achievement but I believe he honored and remembered the victims of the holocaust. One of the most
important lines of this film that really impacted me was "who will be our next executioners?" The reason why I loved this line is because we make
little things so trivial and we take everything for granted. Our liberties are a blessing and yet people don't seem to realize this. I believe that only
when we are faced with a natural catastrophe that will put humanity's survival at risk and we lose everything that will be the day that we will have
gained all. Night and Fog is a great movie, although I wouldn't watch it again because of the images that are

The Fog Horn Ray Bradbury Summary
The story "The Fog Horn" by Ray Bradbury is about a monster that attacks two men working in an isolated lighthouse. The lighthouse has a "fog horn"
which Johnny, who is the narrator, and his boss McDunn. One night the two were discussing how the fog horn sounds like "a big lonely animal crying
in the night". Later a dinosaur like monster comes out from the sea and starts communicating with the fog horn. The men discuss about how it is the last
one in existence and how lonely it is. They then decide to experiment with the monster and turn off the horn. The monster becomes enraged when the
sound is turned off and attacks the lighthouse. The men hide in a cellar while the monster destroys the lighthouse. As thy hide in the cellar they can
hear the monsters cry, which sounds identical to the fog horn. The monster then disappeared after its cry. They were rescued the next day and told their
rescuers that the cause was waves. No one ever found out about the monster, and it never returned. This story is shows us that loneliness can cause anger
.
In this story we see what being lonely can do. The story says, "Think of it, waiting a million years; could you wait that long? Maybe it's the last of
its kind" (Bradbury 3). I agree with this story's meaning. I agree that if someone or something is lonely that can cause anger. We as readers could tell
that the two men were very insensitive towards the sea monster. The story says, "The Fog Horn blew. The monster answered" (Bradbury 4). When

Theme Of Fog In Long Day's Journey Into Night
What Fog Represents in Long Day's Journey into Night?
Long Day's Journey into Night is a semi–autobiographical story written by Eugene O'Neill roughly on 1941– 1942. The play concerns the Tyrone
family which were composed of parents James and Mary and their sons Jamie and Edmund. Mary and Jamie were each addicted to morphine and
alcohol, respectively. The story deals with the family's addiction to whiskey, the father parsimony, the mother's addiction to morphine, and the younger
son's illness. Resentment, blame, and accusation were expressed all the times by the family members for not taking responsibility and running away
from the reality. The long journey that the title of the play referred to was actually a journey into the past. A... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Mary was talking to her daughter Cathleen on act three, she said "It's the foghorn I hate. It won't let you alone. It keeps reminding you, and
warning you, and calling you back." The foghorn was obnoxious and harsh to Mary, and that is why she did not like it.
Another example that explains that the metaphor fog, in this play, represented the lost or confusion life is Edmund's expression. Edmund indicated
the idea that the fog was a flee from reality when he said, "The fog is where I wanted to be." Edmund experienced his retreat into the fog with the
help of alcohol so did Mary with the morphine. Edmund's lost, confusion, and the disconnected from the environment were explicitly shown from
his feeling. However, his family could not read what he was experiencing because all of them were either drunk or on drugs like his mother.
Moreover, Edmund used the sea and fog as metaphors of how close he feels to his loneliness. He said, "As if I was a ghost belonging to the fog, and
the fig was the ghost of the sea. It felt to damned peaceful to be nothing more than the ghost within the ghost. (Act fourth, O'Neill)
The father was partly blamed of all the crisis that the family had. Tyrone thought that whiskey was used as medicine. In the play, Tyrone gave his ill
sons Edmund a whiskey as a tonic for his tuberculosis disease. Due to Tyrone's ancestor, that whiskey was something used like water, Tyrone believed
that it was true and he

Comparing Night And Fog

  • 1. Comparing Night And Fog The Holocaust will go down as one of the most prolific genocides of all time, true evil. Not only were six million Jews slaughtered, but villages and towns were destroyed as well. Even today, the Holocaust still has a large presence on the Jewish community. Many scholars have described how evil is a good representation of the Holocaust, but Richard Rubenstein, Primo Levi, as well as Alain Resnais' film Night and Fog, are all great sources that provide not only how the Holocaust is an evil with outsider but insider viewpoints as well. There is no doubt that the Holocaust is an example of evil, many contradict this statement. Many say that the Nazis are to be blamed for this piece of history, while others will argue that the act of God is to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Without a doubt evil can be associated with this event. Levi's, Rubenstein's, and Resnais' viewpoint from their different pieces of work, emphasize this greatly. Although neither of these men had a theodicy to go along with the Holocaust, each view coincides with one another to help prove how evil this event was. Evil is within all of us, everyone is capable of these events, but that does not mean that all people are evil. Levi discusses the personal account of a man inside Auschwitz, and the horrors that went on there. He writes about the evils he not only had to witness, but experience as well. Resnais does this as well through his film, showing not only the conditions and whereabouts of the camp, but also showing the horrendous affects the camp had on the prisoners. Lastly, Rubenstein explains through his writing that poor morals led to these events down the road, not the act of God. Rubenstein believes that God could never spare six million lives to prove himself to people, that would questions God's superhuman power. All three of these works prove how the Holocaust is an evil, not only did bad morals lead to this destruction, but those who turned a blind–eye to it as well. What is done is done, and there is no going back, but we can learn from these events and teach ourselves that no evils like the ones that took place seventy–two years ago can ever happen again. ... • 2. Significance of Fog in Long Day's Journey into Night... Long Days Journey: The Significance of Fog (8) A Long Day's Journey Into Night, by Eugene O'Neill, is a deeply autobiographical play. His life was rampant with confusion and addictions in his family. Each character in this play has a profound resemblance, and draws parallels and connections with a member of his own family. The longjourney that the title of the play refers to is a journey into his past. Fog is a recurring metaphor in the play; it is a physical presence even before it becomes a crucial symbol of the family's impenetrable confusion. It is referred to in the text as well as stage directions in this play. It sets the mood for the play in all its somber hues. He uses the fog outside the house as an atmospheric element that ... The introductory image establishes the fog as both the intermediary and a symbol of Mary's addiction. The fog is easily identifiable as Mary's morphine high, representative of her cloudy mental state. Mary sinks back into her addiction as the night falls and slowly regresses further away from reality and her family. The fog signifies the state of mind that she is in. Fog has a dense and opaque quality that creates low visibility and blocks out the sun. The fog described in the stage directions is "...as a white curtain drawn down outside the windows" (O'Neill 773). Mary tells Cathleen how she loves the fog, which can be interpreted as her love for the morphine that removes her from any type of coherence. Mary was on a path to recovery and now has slowly lapsed into her state of addiction once again. She likes this state because " It hides you from the world and the world from you. No one can find or touch you any more" (O'Neill 773). For Mary, this fog is representative as an alternative or refuge from reality. Her relapse into addition causes clouds her judgment and impairs her sight. She can hide herself in the fog so that her family can be oblivious to her addiction. "Mary, however, is not alone among the "fog people" – the three men also have their reasons for withdrawing into night" (Brustein 1021). Advancing the Individual's Knowledge of the Holocaust Essay By comparing, analyzing and questioning the validity of Maus I and II, Night, Night and Fog, nonfictional historical accounts and a poem, called Already Embraced by the Arm of Heavenly Solace, found in Europe in the Contemporary World, Schindler's List and the Return to Auschwitz we may determine to what degree these sources serve to advance humanity's understanding of the holocaust. The holocaust can be explained as the historical event in which the Nazi's, who came to power in Germany in January 1933, and its collaborators murdered and persecuted approximately six million Jews. This came about because of the German belief that they were "racially superior" and the Jews were an alien threat to the German state. For humanity to advance in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The conclusions of the various sources, brought on by the analysis of the issues above and by comparing these sources to each other, determined that overall these sources have a high degree in serving to further man's understanding of the holocaust. By categorizing the two movies, Night and Fog and Schindler's List, together we are able to better analyze and contrast the two similar yet different sources. First off, both these sources can be deemed accountable because they use more than one source. The documentary, Night and Fog, uses two different survivors of the holocaust as well as various other sources. Schindler's List also relied on more than one person's account of the situation to write the movie's script. This is unlike the sources such as Return to Auschwitz, written by the first–hand account of Kitty Hart , and Night, written by Elie Wiesel who also had first–hand experiences , that depend on one person's account or report of the situation to tell the story. However, the written work isn't used for entertainment purposes, like Schindler's List is, and therefore is less likely to be changed to draw attention or gain financially. • 4. Chapter 5 Questions For Thought Chapter 5 Questions for Thought 1. Explain the reasoning behind the wintertime expression, "Clear moon, frost soon"? On clear, calm nights, objects and the earth surface cools off by emitting infrared radiation. This cooling effect is more rapid on clear night than cloudy nights since there is no clouds to emit back to the surface. Hence the phrase "clear moon, frost soon". The cool surface is then mixed with air above it, which will eventually cool to the dew point and water vapor will appear on the cooled surfaces. If the temperature continues to fall in the freezing range then the dew will freeze and frost will form. 2. Explain why icebergs are frequently surrounded by fog? Fog surround icebergs due to advection fog. This type... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If the fog is too thick then the sunlight is blocked and the fog may not dissipate. This is common during the day in the central valley of California, where a strong inversion also slows the dissipation by keeping the warm air above the fog. At night, radiation cooling take effect to cool the air temperature and fog forms again. This process can last for days and even weeks. Pg120 10. Near the shore of an extremely large lake, explain why steam fog is more likely to form during the autumn and advection fog in early spring? During autumn in the northern hemisphere it is safe to say the air is likely to be cold while large body of water such as lake are slow to emit their heat away. When the cold air moves over the warmer water steam fog is produced. In early spring, if there is significantly cooler difference between the cold surface and the air above the cold surface then the warm air is chilled and advection fog is created. Pg120–122 11. The air temperature during the night cools to the dew point in a deep layer, producing fog. Before the fog formed, the air temperature cooled each hour about 2 C. After the fog, the air temperature cooled by only 0.5 C each hour. Give two reasons why the air cooled more slowly after the fog formed? During the night the air is cooled more slowly because the fog traps the infrared energy that is emitted from the earth and secondly, latent heat is released as fog is formed.pg 124 12. On ... • 5. Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde Theme Essay The theme of the book is basically good vs evil and split personality. Mr Utterson tries to solve the case of Dr Jekyll's will that's linking to the mysterious man Mr Hyde. No one in London knows who Mr Hyde is, and the few people who saw him described him as "weird" and slightly "deformed". In the first chapter, Mr Utterson said Mr Hyde is "Not easy to describe". And that there is something "wrong with his appearance; something displeasing, something downright detestable", and "He must be deformed somewhere; he gives a strong feeling of deformity, although I couldn't specify the point. • 6. Reflective Essay On Night And Fog There was a point in time, when the Holocaust tragedy transpired, where the Nazi's committed genocide during World War II. In this day in age, the world looks back upon these ultimate crimes against humanity, when these atrocities occurred, believing this could never feasibly happen again in our time. Alain Resnais created the self–reflective documentary film, Night and Fog, to act as a warning to the audience that the tragic significance of the Holocaust was a past reality and always will threaten humanity by its ability to return and become our present reality. The circular narrative of the film began in the present, reverts to the past, while returning in the end to the present time. With Resnair's circular narrative, he was able to show ... Role Of Weather In The Great Gatsby It's More Than Just Rain or Snow In reality the weather and environment play a part in how people interact with one another and in some cases it can even influence a person's mood. Therefore, weather also plays a similar role in literature as it does in reality. The only difference is that in literature the significance of weather impacts the story more and has much sub–contextual meaning than what is just portrayed on the surface level. Within different stories different types of weather can symbolize different things. In the novel, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Fitzgerald uses fog to serve as a symbol for Gatsby's and Daisy's relationship. His choice for using fog as a symbol of their relationship is because it obscures Gatsby's vision of the green light on Daisy's house which, for Gatsby, it acts as a beacon letting him know where Daisy is. Also, it acts as a method of foreshadowment. Realistically, fog obscures one's vision and it renders the viewer "blind" to what's around them due to the fact that the fog encapsulates the person in a visual area that is generally only immediately in front of you. The film begins with the landscape of what was once a concentration camp that murdered captives in the Holocaust, soft music plays in the background, and the voice of Micheal Bouquet speaks about the past. As the film progresses more images are presented: normal facilities used for torture, skeletal bodies being bulldozed, and an aerial view of masses of woman's hair is shown. These dark images are connected to the softening tone in the music, introducing a glimpse of hope as the one sees barbaric actions that occurred. Theme Of Water In Rime Of The Ancient Mariner Written Task 2 The Symbol of Water within Samuel Coleridge's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner Romantic literature writers commonly input elements of nature within their writing to express their opinions. Samuel Taylor Coleridge includes the most abundant form of nature, water, within The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. Water, in its various forms, symbolizes the power and force of nature in both the natural and spiritual world. Water in the form of ice represents imprisonment and the harsh acts that nature imposes as a punishment. Nature torments the crew by not letting them have any fresh water as punishment for their actions, and the irony of the drought is how there is "water everywhere" but they still are in a drought, constantly being teased by nature; also, in attempts to describe the degree of irony, "water" is repeated twice highlighting the access of water that is unavailable. The water is also described as "like a witch's oils" which "Burnt green, and blue, and white" (129–130). Water is compared by a simile to "witch's oils", equating the necessary resource of water to other evil–related liquids; this in–turn de–values the water that they need to live, and continues the entrapment of the crew as punishment. Nearing the end of the passage, water still "rumbled on, / Still louder and more dread" in a never–ending torment of water and imprisonment (547–548). Water continuously represents the harsh punishments of nature, specifically eliciting fear in the Mariner as words such as "dread and rumbled" impose fear and stun the Mariner, during the falling action of the ballad. Also, the changeover from black and white to colour alludes to the recovery of memories, in essence, the grim fragmented images suggest flashes of memory, such that a survivor may endure flashbacks of their past. • 24. Semi Truck Collision A high–speed collision with any vehicle can be devastating. However, a high–speed collision of a car with a semi truck often has a grim outcome for the motorist. The rear underride guards of semi trailers don't offer much in the way of a crumple zone for absorbing impact energy. Damaged or rusted guards offer virtually no protection at all. In addition, hitting one at an offset (with the front left or right side of your car) causes severe damage to the car and may demolish the area occupied by the driver or right front passenger. Finally, a high–speed collision with the side of a trailer, which lacks an underride guard, can shear off the top half of a car. How do these car/truck accidents happen? Often when the semi truck is invisible. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nevertheless, while they both were created to move their audience, the motivation behind the two are quite different. "Night and Fog was created to serve as a warning for people about the dangers of cruelty, while "Capturing the Friedmans was made in a way to have viewers question the guilt of the two Friedmans convicted of sexuals assault. To do so, Andrew Jarecki portrays a sense of innocence and ambiguity from the alleged perpetrators, and victims.. One of the most profunding ways in which a sense of ambiguity is portrayed within this work is the absence of recollection. Within the film Arnold Friedman confesses to the fact that as a child, he sexaully assaulted his younger brother while in bed. However, when his brother is asked about this instance, he denies it all and claims it never happened. These moments are then paired with other instances of ambiguity such as the montage of interviews where former students will speak upon an instance of sexual assault within the computer classes, only to then have another former student deny every claim previously made. This absence of a universal truth works to make viewers question whether or not the assault happened. This ambiguity is then accompanied by home videos of the family dealing with infighting, denial, and total frustration with the entire process: in effect humanizing the men. Through this humanization its becomes increasingly harder for an audience to find guilt in the men. This process of reflexivity, allows audiences to view the stories of these two men from a different standpoint, and come to a different conclusion in regards to guilt of these men, than of before. Night and Fog vs Triumph of the Will Essay "Triumph of the Will" and "Night and Fog," portray Hitler's vision for Germany, and the findings of Allied liberators of concentration camps in the beginning of World War II. A comparison of the films present two very different views of what Hitler deemed necessary for Germany. They each displayed propaganda in a way they're eye–catching simply because of the raw footage. It took everything that we knew about pre WWII and corrected it, so that we knew the truth about how the people of Germany felt, and what they saw in those exact moments. The task of viewing these films was quite difficult, and although both films seem to be a highly emotional and factual, I believe that "Night and Fog" was a more superior piece of propaganda. As said previously, a convincing piece of propaganda shows the viewer hope, but also reality, and in the film, it looks anything but realistic. In Night and Fog it was an appropriate design the way the switched from color to black and white. I got two different meanings from this. 1) We live today in our present environment in a world filled with color. We don't go through hunger, torture and our dignities aren't taken from us. The black and white represents to me other people around the world which still today are going through similar times as these victims in this film went through. 2) The theme in on which the comparison is about the past and the present was very clear. The same pathways which were filled with the blood of the victims were now all buried under the ground. The color represented the present and the black and white represented the past. The Viewer Is The Witness In 'Night And Fog' How the Viewer is the Witness in Night and Fog Alain Resnais' "Night and Fog" is a Holocaust documentary shot in 1955 that served as a lens into the hellish landscape of the Holocaust. It was shot with footage of the Holocaust combined with a voiceover narration that provides a detailed look into the horrors of the Holocaust. The film proved to be a success but it struggled through censorship due to its inherent gruesome nature. This is because the film uses various techniques in such a way that the viewer of the film feel that they themselves have become witnesses of these tragedies, as opposed to just being a viewer of a documentary about the Holocaust, thus making the viewer experience of the film much more impactful. Traditional documentaries use interviews and first hand witness accounts to tell the story, but Night and Fog does not. It presents everything objectively and lets the powerful, fast paced cinematography and narration tell the story. Another technique used is the rapid juxtaposition shots from the past and present, thus giving the film a sense of timelessness. The last technique used is toward the end when the narrator asks the harrowing question whether or not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Francois Truffaut Francois Truffaut continued on to say that Alain Resnais' Night and Fog, made in 1955, was the "greatest film ever made". The 30–minute film based on the horrors of the Holocaust and Nazi concentration camps after World War II combines Resnais' own cinematography with original images and footage of the captives in their unfathomable state. Together with image choice, music and cinematography, this 'Voice of God' narration personifies the films perspective in order to not only show but to explain to the viewers the meaning of what is on the screen. Plantigna deliberates on various differences between the fiction and non–fiction filmmaker, particularly the role of imagination to the two differing styles of film. He discusses that the fiction filmmaker "freely creates imaginative events", where the non–fiction filmmaker "portrays or makes explicit claims about actual historical events" (104). He then puts forth the idea that imagination is also important for the non–fiction filmmaker as he as the creator "decides how to represent historical events" (104). This is demonstrated in shot 237 where Resnais' camera pans over the ceiling of a gas chamber that has been carved in and scored by human fingernails and the voice–over narrates, "the only sign–but you have to know–is this ceiling, dug into by fingernails". The picture, featured in the collection, is a clear example of his early artistic period, which coincides with his first approach to photography itself. Undoubtedly, without that luminous minutia, the picture wouldn't have the same appeal. The photo is generally soft, since it doesn't convey plenty of details (given the evident atmospheric disturbances) but when focusing on the main physical components present in the scene, in particular, the intricate decor on the fringe of the fence, it is possible to notice an unexpected sharpness, probably achieved with more precision in post–production. Because of that, the use of colours and lights appears to be particularly relevant. The exploitation of hidden backlight sources in this night photography gives the perception of a much stronger and dramatic contrast, enriching the smooth grayscale palette used for the background. The boldly black silhouette stands out majestically in the dense grey mist, and the letters of the sign appear with some sort of mystic grandeur, also acting as a key light point. It's impossible not to focus on them and not to notice their evident difference, their belonging to different "worlds".The depiction of neon is also significant: this kind of light is blueish and extremely cold. Due to this topography of this area air masses become stagnant and ventilation of the valley is hindered (Herckes, et. Al). The lack of ventilation in the valley leads to temperature inversions, because of high pressure systems that form of the Great Basin (Herckes, et. Al). He describes London during the day at a lighter judgement, and Dr. Jekyll's purity is being represented by the atmosphere at the start of the novel. The lighthouse has a "fog horn" which Johnny, who is the narrator, and his boss McDunn. One night the two were discussing how the fog horn sounds like "a big lonely animal crying in the night". Later a dinosaur like monster comes out from the sea and starts communicating with the fog horn. The men discuss about how it is the last one in existence and how lonely it is. They then decide to experiment with the monster and turn off the horn. The monster becomes enraged when the sound is turned off and attacks the lighthouse. The men hide in a cellar while the monster destroys the lighthouse. As thy hide in the cellar they can hear the monsters cry, which sounds identical to the fog horn. The monster then disappeared after its cry. They were rescued the next day and told their rescuers that the cause was waves. No one ever found out about the monster, and it never returned. This story is shows us that loneliness can cause anger . In this story we see what being lonely can do. The story says, "Think of it, waiting a million years; could you wait that long? Maybe it's the last of its kind" (Bradbury 3). I agree with this story's meaning. I agree that if someone or something is lonely that can cause anger. Long Day's Journey into Night is a semi–autobiographical story written by Eugene O'Neill roughly on 1941– 1942. The play concerns the Tyrone family which were composed of parents James and Mary and their sons Jamie and Edmund. Mary and Jamie were each addicted to morphine and alcohol, respectively. The story deals with the family's addiction to whiskey, the father parsimony, the mother's addiction to morphine, and the younger son's illness. Resentment, blame, and accusation were expressed all the times by the family members for not taking responsibility and running away from the reality. When Mary was talking to her daughter Cathleen on act three, she said "It's the foghorn I hate. It won't let you alone. It keeps reminding you, and warning you, and calling you back." The foghorn was obnoxious and harsh to Mary, and that is why she did not like it. Another example that explains that the metaphor fog, in this play, represented the lost or confusion life is Edmund's expression. Edmund indicated the idea that the fog was a flee from reality when he said, "The fog is where I wanted to be." Edmund experienced his retreat into the fog with the help of alcohol so did Mary with the morphine. Edmund's lost, confusion, and the disconnected from the environment were explicitly shown from his feeling. However, his family could not read what he was experiencing because all of them were either drunk or on drugs like his mother. Moreover, Edmund used the sea and fog as metaphors of how close he feels to his loneliness. He said, "As if I was a ghost belonging to the fog, and the fig was the ghost of the sea. It felt to damned peaceful to be nothing more than the ghost within the ghost. (Act fourth, O'Neill) The father was partly blamed of all the crisis that the family had.
