17. Do you agree with the expansion of expedited removal powers?
• Created in 1996, expedited removal is a process by which low-level immigration officers can
quickly deport certain noncitizens who are undocumented or have committed fraud or
misrepresentation (no trial given).
• Since 2004, immigration officials have used expedited removal to deport individuals who
arrive at our border, as well as individuals who entered without authorization if they are
apprehended within two weeks of arrival and within 100 miles of the Canadian or
Mexican border.
• On January 25, 2017, President Trump issued an executive order which directed the
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to dramatically expand the use of “expedited
removal” to its full statutory extent.
• In July 22, 2019, the Department of Homeland Security announced that it would carry out
the full expansion. As of July 23, 2019, expedited removal may be applied to individuals
who are undocumented, or who have committed fraud or misrepresentation, and who are
encountered within the entire United States and who have not been physically present in
the United States for two years prior to apprehension.

Even less-populated countries like Syria (5 million) and Poland
(4.4 million) have larger emigrant populations. As a share of
the population in 2015, around 1% of Americans born in the
United States lived outside of the United States. This is a
considerably smaller share than that of other migrant
destinations like the UK (8%), Germany (5%) or Canada (4%).”

Credible Fear Screening
• Individuals who are placed in expedited removal proceedings and who tell a
Customs and Border Protection (CBP) official that they fear persecution,
torture, or returning to their country or that they wish to apply for asylum
should be referred for a credible fear screening interview conducted by an
asylum officer. If the asylum officer determines that the asylum seeker has a
credible fear of persecution or torture, it means that the person has proven
that he or she has a “significant possibility” of establishing eligibility for
asylum or other protection under the Convention Against Torture. The
individual will then be referred to immigration court to proceed with the
defensive asylum application process.

- Just – Enforcement of law keeps the American house in order and helps those
who actually need asylum
- Necessary – The government is primarily responsible to do what is best for
American citizens (sphere care), not the world. Granting amnesty or permits
incentivizes illegal immigration.

• Theft to acquire wanted product = Never leads to what you want - acquisition of item
• Plagiarize in order to get an A = Never leads to what you want – good grade
