The first scene presents us with a close shotofwho we
believe to be the main character, his melancholic facial
expressions show he isn’thappy aboutsomething. And the
two top buttons are undone suggesting he doesn’tshow pride
in his appearance and the messy hair also suggests this.
This lack of pride may be linked to his facial expressions as
we know that people with depression or in a depressive mood
are less likely to show pride in the way they look.
The title page shows what looks to be the material ofa dress.
We know already that the theme of the movie is based
around getting over an ex-partner so itis likely this is the
material of his exes dress. Partnered alongside the dress is
non-diegetic music that has happy tones to it and could be
representative ofhis thoughts towards his ex and may be
why he is struggling with getting over her so much.
This close up shotofa bartender making drinks suggests the
main character (who we know is going through issues) is
attempting to supress his emotions through alcohol which in
normal contextis known to be quite a dark and depressing
thing to do however the non-diegetic music again manages to
lighten the general mood ofwhat is an upsetting topic to most
people and therefore reinforcing its comedic genre. The soft
colour tones ofdark, warm orange also lightens to suggest
the general mood ofthe bar to be quite uplifting.
Another facial close up shows the clear emotions ofthe new
girl that the main character has just met and allows us to
understand clearly how both parties feel abouteach other
through facial expressions and behaviour , these being clear
to us as the audience through the use ofsuch shots.

This upper mid shotshows the male to be sitting on his
own and through facial expression alone we can tell he is
unhappy as well as this, his actions (staring at drink)
suggests either he is bored or he is thinking deeply about
a possible issue. The darkly litred lighting could imply
the character feels like he is in hell due to his depressive
thoughts. The music whilst being diegetic still manages
to match the mood ofthe scene, allowing the audience to
gain a clear understanding ofhow the character feels.
in contrast to the first therapy scene, the mood ofthe
scene now implies thatthe characters now feeling
better about his situation. His body language and facial
expressions appears to show that he is more engaged
motivated. The mid/long shotalso allows us to see how
the mood has been lifted through showing the pair
conversing.
In this shot, the mise en scene suggests the main
character has cleaned himselfup and therefore could
reflecthe has cleaned up his mental state and is
becoming more socially engaged. The clean trimmed
hair as opposed to the messy hair he has had throughout
