Additionally, the study of epidemiology includes research into the morbidity and mortality of chronic illnesses that are found in the United States and across the globe. Infectious diseases like polio, TB, measles, and malaria have been almost eliminated in the United States; however, these diseases continue in other parts of the world for a variety of reasons. Highly contagious infectious diseases can and do lead to death despite the fact that many are preventable. The United States has used childhood vaccinations to prevent and eradicate illnesses such as smallpox and polio. In order to reduce the incidence of malaria in the United States, DDT—a known carcinogen in humans that is also toxic to birds—and other pesticides were used in the past and have since been replaced with nontoxic insecticides and larvicides to reduce the numbers of mosquitoes. Unfortunately, developing countries often do not have the resources to engage in the same sorts of prevention programs and may have to resort to unsafe or toxic means to control vectors. They may not have the financial resources or health care personnel available to engage in mass vaccination campaigns. In addition, countries that experience frequent wars, acts of terrorism, and political instability face additional challenges to the provision of health care to their populations, especially when faced with an outbreak of an infectious disease. Although teen pregnancy rates have dropped there are still concerns and healthcare problems that are associated with teen pregnancy. Often times they are afraid to discuss sex with their parents and deny will deny being sexually active at all. There are problems that manifest with adolescent pregnancy for the mother and often times the infants as well. The high school drop out rate among pregnant high school students is approximated at about 70 percent and is cited as the number reason teens drop out prior to graduation . There is also an estimated $7 billion revenue cost associated with teen pregnancy in the United States alone. [KD2] The risk of young people engaging in early sexual intercourse is largely due to the lack of sexual education, peer pressure and social influences. Chlamydial infection, gonorrhea, HIV/AIDS, primary and secondary syphilis, and hepatitis B virus infection are amid the highest reported STDs with chlamydia noted as the most dominate which is likely due to the fact that there is more vigorous testing. Some of the other noted STDs are genital herpes, trichomoniasis, Chancroid, and HPV. Often times and without any signs or symptoms present more than one pathogen is involved with sexually transmitted diseases. Typically the only environments in which there remain viable pathogens is the bodily fluids from the genitourinary tract requiring there to be intimate contact for them to be acquired. Although it affects men and women chlamydia is predominately seen in young women and is the most common nationally known sexually transmitted disease in the U.S. Bodily fluids from the genitourinary tract are typically the environments in which there remain viable pathogens, so intimate contact is generally required to obtain STDs. Chlamydia infections are asymptomatic in most women and can be transmitted during childbirth with the potential of a newborn developing pneumonia as a complication. If it is not treated chlamydia can spread to the uterus and fallopian tube creating further health problems and permanent damage to the reproductive system. Health Problem. I have chosen to complete my final project discussing Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). There are quite a few people that I know that are near and dear to my heart living with this virus. There are many misconceptions about HIV that the public has simply due to unawareness. With most common public health issues there are many questions that need to be answered to solve the myths. Mental health and substance use disorders can also make it difficult for people to take their medications as prescribed. When HIV is not treated or maintained, it can lead to the fatal diseases Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Of note, you cannot have AIDS without being infected with HIV. According to the Center for Disease Control, HIV can affect anyone regardless of sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, gender, or age (CDC, 2022). However, certain groups are at a higher risk for HIV and weigh special considerations due to the specific risk factors. Gay and Bisexual men, pregnant women, infants, children, Transgender people, people who exchange sex for money, people who inject drugs, etc. These are all considerations of the causes for higher risk for being affected by HIV. However, with the modern medicines and treatments for HIV, many have been known to live long and healthy lives. II. Organization. The organization that I have chosen is the World Health Organization (WHO). WHO was founded in 1948 and is the United Nations Agency that connects nations, partners, and people to promote health, keep the world safe and serve the vulnerable – so everyone, everywhere can attain the highest level of health (WHO, 2022). My role in this organization will be a Public Health Physician. WHO works closely with United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) on Elimination of Mother-to Child Transmission (EMTCT) of HIV and pediatric AIDS and works with United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) on the integration of HIV and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR). WHO considers the epidemiological, technological, and contextual trends of previous years, promotes learning with each disease area, and generates opportunities to leverage innovations and knowledge for efficient responses to HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STI).
