Marshall Scholarship Analysis
If chosen for the Marshall Scholarship, my first selection of programs would be to pursue the one
year Global Health and Development MSc program at University College London (UCL) and the
one year International Health Management MSc at Imperial College London.
When researching potential programs, I was adamant about finding a highly ranked global health or
health management. When I started conducting my research, I found that some of the some of the
top rated public health programs are taught at University College London and Imperial College
London. As I began to narrow down on these two institutions, I was intrigued by the number of
different programs that could be taken up in the field. Specifically, UCL offered around eight
different ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first year of my program would allow me to expand my knowledge on global health issues and
the use of policy to influence those issues. I am particularly interested in health disparities and
learning about how and why certain diseases and outbreaks disproportionately affect specific
populations of people. By learning more about epidemiology I can learn the skills necessary to
development preventative measures or medical training specific to those populations. In my second
year, I believe that I will gain the skills necessary to run a hospital or healthcare system or
organization. The modules associated with the module will allow me to enhance critical thinking
abilities necessary when solving complex problems in the context of healthcare. I anticipate that
these two independently comprehensive programs, together will provide me the tools necessary to
accomplish my career goals. My hope is that the Global Health and International Health
Management programs will combine epidemiology research, population disparities, health policy
and healthcare systems management outside of the scope of U.S. healthcare. It is my vision that the
tools I learn here will equip me to influence United States healthcare reform and establish global
healthcare

Florence Nightingale Contributions
Florence Nightingale was born on May 12, 1820, in Florence, Italy. She was an outstanding nurse
and inspired many women to become nurses. She established her own school in 1860 for nurses
called the Nightingale Training School of Nurses at the St. Thomas Hospital in London, England.
Nightingale was the first woman to ever to be awarded the Order of Merit in 1907 and the Freedom
of the City award in 1909. She is credited with inventing the pie chart. Florence Nightingale was the
first woman to be elected into the Royal Statistical Society. She is known by many as the "Lady with
the Lamp" and the philosopher for modern nursing. International Nurses Day is celebrated on May
12, Nightingale's birthday, in honor of her accomplishments.
Florence Nightingale was named after the city in which she was born. She had only one sibling, an
older sister named Parthenope. The Nightingale family was a part of a British elite social circle.
They were very wealthy and had two comfortable estates, one in Derbyshire and another in
Hampshire, both located in England. Nightingale's father was very invested in her education, and by
an early age she could already read and write in French, German, Greek, Italian, and Latin. At
sixteen, Florence felt a calling from God to decrease human suffering. Even though her mother was
from a family of merchants who were very social, Florence Nightingale was very awkward in social
situations. She wanted to start a career in nursing, but her family did not

Have you ever heard of Florence Nightingale, The Women who pioneered modern nursing? She
once said, "I attribute my success to this – I never gave or took any excuse" her abilities were
uncanny in the world of nursing. When she was working at a war hospital she went around at night
with a lamp to check all the patients. Florence was always very humble though. She didn't like
talking about her success, so after her death the people writing her biography interviewed her
relatives about her early life, her friends and her family, and where she went for her nursing jobs.

Elizabeth Garrett Anderson
Elizabeth Garrett Anderson is often considered to be one of the most significant women in the
history of medicine and society, her work is often considered to be a turning point in history. She
refused to accept a domestic role and who fought to change the prevalent Victorian attitude that
women and men could not be equal. She was the first female doctor in Britain, helped to establish
the women's suffrage movement, and provided inspiration to her contemporaries and to those who
followed in her footsteps. Over the years she has made a major impact not only in the ... Show more

Eventually, she enrolled as a nurse at Middlesex Hospital and attended lectures given to the male
student doctors. This lasted only a few months, as the students complained about her attendance
when she started to outshine them in lectures. However, they didn't stop her, she continued to
persevere. This is an example of the attitude barriers that Garrett Anderson had to overcome in order
to achieve her goal, as women, again as stated before, were often held back due to the arrangement
in society. Elizabeth worked extremely hard to work through all the negative aspect that came along
with achieving this profession; it was her drive and ambition that sailed her through.
"She turned to private study and was taught anatomy at the London Hospital and general medicine
under the tuition of professors at St Andrews University and Edinburgh University Extra–Mural
School"(Brooks 13–15). None of this would have been possible without the continued financial and
moral support of her father. In order to practice medicine, Garrett had to gain a qualifying diploma.
London University, the Royal Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons and other examining bodies
refused to allow her to sit their examinations, but she discovered that the Society of Apothecaries
did not specifically ban women from taking their exams. "In 1865 Elizabeth went on to pass the

Florence Nightengale Essay
Florence Nightingale is remembered throughout the world for her heroic, almost superhuman labors
in the field of nursing. Florence Nightingale was born in Italy in 1820 and was named Florence after
her birthplace. A brilliant child, Florence attained outstanding academic achievement in her years
attending school. Florence grew up to be a lively and attractive young woman, admired in her
families elite social circle and was expected to make a good marriage, but Florence had other
concerns.
In 1837, Florence was called by God to do his work. However, Florence did not hear voices or see
visions. God called her by making her think for herself. She did not think that she out to do what her

Florence, now thirty–one went to work at Kaserworth Hospital in Germany, and was later promoted
and moved to a hospital in London.
In 1854 Britain, France and Turkey declared war on Russia, marking the begging of the Crimean
War. The allies had the upper hand in the war but there were vast criticisms of the medical felicities
for the wounded soldiers.
In response, Florence asked and was granted permission to take a group of thirty–eight women
nurses to look after the British soldiers fighting in the war.
Nightingale found the conditions of the hospitals appalling. The men were kept in rooms without
blankets or decent food. Unwashed, they were still wearing their army uniforms, "still
with dirt and gore". In these conditions, Florence was not surprised that war wounds
accounted for one out of every six deaths in the war. Diseases such at typhus, chorea, and dysentery
ran rampant among the wounded soldiers.
Military officers and doctors objected to Nightingale's view of reforming military hospitals. They
interpreted her comments as an attack and she was made to feel unwelcome. Nightingale received
very little help from the military until she used a contact from the London Times to report the details
of the way that the British Army treated its wounded soldiers. Nightingale was given the task of
organizing the barracks and by improving the quality of sanitation she was able

Cutting Edge Advancements to 19th Century Surgery
Great Britain in the early 1800s was not the pleasant place we know today. There was garbage
rotting on the streets, waste tossed out windows or into the River Thames, London's supply of clean
drinking water (or so they thought), and was unhealthily overpopulated due to the growth of
industry caused by the invention of the steam engine. Especially in cities, households were tightly
packed and overcrowded, allowing infectious diseases and bacteria to spread rapidly. Open drains
and sewers flowed alongside unpaved streets while inadequate toilet facilities overflowed and
seeped into cellar dwellings. The air was filthy; it was filled with the stench of rotting ... Show more

Robert Liston was a Scottish surgeon commonly called 'the fastest knife in the West End' and was
determined to improve the poor odds of surgery in the early 19th century. For most of Liston's
career, he was known for his boldness and speed in major surgical interventions; he could amputate
a leg in under 2 ½ minutes. Although it seems careless, speed was essential to minimizing the
patient 's pain and improving their odds of surviving surgery in the age before anesthesia. Liston's
success rates were fairly good: only about one of every 10 of his patients died on his operating table
at London 's University College Hospital whereas, the surgeons at nearby St. Bartholomew 's lost
approximately one in every four. However, Dr. Liston's speed caused multiple unfortunate casualties
in his operating theater. Due to Dr. Robert Liston's extreme speed, he accidentally took off a patient
's testicles along with the leg that was being amputated. During another leg amputation, Liston
managed to perform the only known surgery in history with a 300 percent mortality rate. As Liston
cut through the leg hastily, he cut off his surgical assistant 's fingers and while switching
instruments, slashed a spectator 's coat. Unfortunately, the patient and the assistant both died from
wound infections and the spectator died of shock.
Liston not only had a swift and (mostly) steady slice, but he

Although it is now with Chase Farm Hospital, it employs 1100 less staff with the same hospital bed
capacity. But its financial management ratings were significantly underachieved. These ratings are
trying to show the public and the board, that there is a spread of wealth within the different NHS
hospitals and that one is not neglected. This is deffinately where their priorities should lie as they are
trying to sell the image that the public hospitals have the right equipment and people.
Performance measures for assessment of customer services
The assessment of customer services is one that can be measured in a number of different ways.
Firstly through the NHS ratings the length of time that someone has to wait in A&E generally
should be 4 hours or less – Both hospitals were considered unsatisfactory. Customer
Services goes further than just the waiting time at A&E, although it might be looked at as an
important element within a hospital. The
Royal Free give priority to their training schemes as laid out in their aims. They train all types of
workers, from doctors to mid–wives. But depending on the training schemes, it is hard to say when
it would have an affect on the quality of customer service. But as it is trying to assess what patients
think of a hospital, it is not straight forward. For instance, you wouldn't be able to use secret
shoppers with retail stores. Surveys are given out from time to time to get customer feedback

Simon and his department staff were the ones in charge of the investigation for the spread of
cholera.
From researching cholera, Simon discovered that the "germ" cholera has properties similar to a cell.
This is an early identification of a bacterial cell, before anyone knew what a bacterial cell was.
Smallpox is a contagious and deadly disease especially if a person has not been vaccinated.
Smallpox is a Variola virus and part of the Genus Orthopoxvirus.
In 1857, Simon helped the England government relize how the upper and middle class within
London have significantly less deaths from small pox as they're vaccinated. This help give the rise
to the 1867 Vaccination Act.
Smallpox reproduction occurs when the virus attaches itself to a host cell that it inserts its RNA code
into the cell. The cell will produce more copies of the virus and then release them.
Smallpox does not affect a specific system but travels to most major organs when it is able to travel
through the lymphatic system. The smallpox causes the destruction and disfiguring of the skin
which eventually leads a person to

Political factors affect the organizations vision due to government hindrance. The demand and cost
of hospital is rising which can be economically measured. The money is tightened. So, economic
factors do affect the organizational vision. Now a day technology plays a important role which can
be considered. Due to technology there is continuous rise in the life of the people. The life is
increased and that is going to continue. The population is increasing and that's the trend which is
going in future. People have multiple conditions. Various surgeries and clinical patients are been
provided to the patients. The diseases are dangerous but the life is been increased due to technology.
There are cancer patients, heart attack patients but survival rate is raised. Even organ transplant is
successful. NHS has to bear a large cost due to various treatments, techniques and the cost. Thus the
government has to meet the rising demand as the population lifestyle factor. These factors affect the
organization in the context as they are helpful to verify the information. Political factors affect the
external environment in the organization for the goal formation.

In this part of Unit 9, I will be focusing on the Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity and the
promotional campaign I will be looking at is called "Save the Day". This campaign aims to raise a
lot of money for charity that will be contributed towards the most up–to–date medical equipment to
help save the lives of young, sick patients. The advertising agency that worked with the business is
Proximity London. This agency comes up with new and unique ideas to make promotional
campaigns effective for different companies. They have been working with successful clients such
as Lloyds Bank, John Lewis and The Economist. They have also worked with Volkswagen in
particular for the past 20 years and are still currently doing business with them.

Proximity chose to design a website because they want to raise awareness to people in other
countries who do not know about the organisation. This leads to more people making donations to
their charity in order to help these sick individuals get better. Therefore, more money will be
provided to their charity, making it easier for them to buy the most effective medical equipment. It
will also increase the chances of sick people getting better as workers will feel more comfortable
when using this equipment to perform surgeries on sick people.
Another role the advertising agency had for the promotional campaign was to attract their target
market through their website, which are parents and children. Parents who are not experiencing the
same situation with their children are more likely to put down donations than those who are
experiencing this situation. This may be due to them feeling thankful that their children do not have
any dangerous conditions and they will feel sympathetic towards the sick children. This could cause
them to make generous donations as no parents would like to witness any child going through
extreme pain and suffering. The business strives to help children specifically, considering the fact
that they undergo situations like this more than adults. Reaching out to their target market will
attract people to visit their hospital and see for themselves how children are struggling with the
terrible state that they are in. It reminds

physical condition. Francis Carr Gomm, supported Treves idea. Merrick's condition had worsened
over the past two years. The London Hospital was not equipped to take care of an "incurable

Gomm put a letter in the New York Times giving an outline of Joseph Carey Merrick's life. In result
of this letter the public gave much support. This support earned enough money to get Merrick a
place to spend the rest of his life in the hospital under watch by the nurses and staff. Merrick's case

One important person out of the many that visited Merrick was the Princess of Wales Alexandra.

Weston Smith says that he does not believe the concept of business ethics because"Business Ethics
is no more than a label" (Smith 2–21–18). I personally do not agree with his views, because business
ethics is much more than a label. Business ethics, while sometimes not followed in the case of
HealthSouth and other companies that commit fraud, is a way to keep companies in line. Without
business ethics, companies could basically create their own rules about how they do things, which
would mean it would be harder, or even impossible to catch fraud or other

Personal Statement
A series of unexpected events led me to become an orthopaedic surgeon. In the fourth year of
medical school, I began to observe the orthopaedic surgeries. My supervisors were using their
dexterity to repair the fractures in the bone. After the operation and rehabilitation, patients would be
gaining their movement back. It was a process that took time and work, but the end result was
outstanding. I would care for patients who once came in pain, watching them leave with smiles on
their faces. I wanted to improve the quality of life of my patients as well.
Over my twenty–five year career as an orthopaedic surgeon, I came across a myriad of patients. My
goal has always been to do my best to help each of my patients by educating them of the situation,

The current (2012/2013) organisational objectives are: 1) To offer the NHS wide MARS voluntary
redundancy programme in order to reduce the overall staff count to 2950 and; 2) Make £1.5 million
savings in staff costs. 3) Make savings of £500,000 in non–staff costs, £100,000 of savings per

The Hutchinson Affair Dbq
Despite the French losing the French and Indian War, the colony was devastated by the strain of
having to defend the frontier. Britain, tired of being asked by the colonies for help defending the
frontier, gave colonists a choice. They could pay for 10,000 British soldiers or raise their own forces
("London Years"). The colonists were not thrilled by either option and began to have resentment
against the British government.
Initially, Benjamin misunderstood the colonists view on the Parliament's actions. He is noted to have
reassured the King on several occasions that the colonies would remain loyal to the Crown. He even
went so far as to say the colonists would not mind being taxed. Parliament eventually went on to
impose a stamp tax on colonial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Seven Key Principles Of The Hospital Discharge Process
|
Introduction
Using the seven key principles of the hospital discharge process devised by the Department of
Health (DH, 2003), this case study will critically analyse the process of an elderly patient who was
discharged from a local acute trust. It begins by providing a definition of discharge planning, before
providing a brief biography of the patient, including a rationale of why this patient was selected,
details of her past medical history, reason for current admission, any issues raised and details of any
care provided. Throughout this case study, in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council
(NMC, 2008) and the Data Protection Act (1998), the patient shall be referred to as Mrs. Blue to
maintain anonymity. Although the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, when the assessment was carried out, Mrs. Blue neglected to disclose that she was not
coping at home and this was only discovered when her friend visited the unit.
Principle 2
Similar themes as principle 2 are discussed in principle 7 of the DH (2010) principles and in
principle 9 of the RCN (2010) principles. These themes largely focus on patient participation,
patient choice and promoting independence.
When it comes to organising, decision–making and conducting activities relating to care delivery,
Efraimisson & Sandman et al (2004) highlight that both public opinion and the law dictates that
patients have the right to be involved. Foss & Askautrud (2010) discuss, that involving elderly
patients in this process during a hospital admission is believed to strengthen their ability to cope
with everyday life upon discharge. Wells (2007) also informs us that there are varying levels of
patient participation which include the providing of information such as leaflets, direct discussions,
and patient involvement.
Whilst in hospital care Mrs. Blue was encouraged to be involved in her care. Nurses would regularly
provide education and support on how to promote health and well–being. When Mrs. Blue was
ready to be discharged home, the nurse provided Mrs. Blue with written information on aftercare
and instructions on how to take prescribed medications whilst at home, a contact number for the
ward,

Many people think of tuberculosis (TB) as a 'Dickensian' era disease. But current figures from the
World Health Organization (WHO) show that, alongside HIV, TB is the most deadly infectious
disease in the world.
Most new cases occur in China, India, Indonesia, Nigeria and Pakistan.
But the UK has the highest TB rates in Western Europe, according to figures from Public Health
England, with 12 cases per 100,000 people.
And the numbers in London are even higher. In November 2015 the London ... Show more content

The unit receives TB referrals from across southeast England and local district general hospitals.
The trust's physiotherapy TB provision consists of a band 5 physio who works half a day a week on
the unit, and receives input from both the respiratory team and the trust's neuro–outreach
physiotherapy team.
'We don't have a blanket referral for all patients that are admitted with TB, but we are lucky to work
with fantastic nurses and doctors who are able to identify when the patients need our input,' says Ms
Ricketts.
There is no typical pathway of care for patients who are referred to the unit with TB, she says, as
each case is different and physiotherapy treatment – when needed – varies depending on the
presentation and site of TB in a patient's body.
Most cases of TB can be successfully treated with a six–month course of antibiotics, says Mrs
Ricketts. But drug–resistant strains of the disease can involve lengthier and more complex treatment
with antibiotics and injectable drugs, and often require inpatient care.
Physiotherapy may be needed if a TB patient has a high secretion load, respiratory compromise or
functional or neurological impairment. And pulmonary TB patients may need inpatient
physiotherapy if they experience a long hospital stay.
'TB can affect different parts of the body – it can be in your bladder or in your spine, or anywhere –
but with pulmonary TB one of the biggest problems is that patients often become very
deconditioned,' says Ms

Audit 's Audit Results And Outline A Recoupment Process...
DSH Audits
NH DHHS has been in contact with the New Hampshire Hospital Association and New Hampshire
hospitals to discuss the 2011 DSH audit results and outline a recoupment process for hospitals with
excess payments. NH DHHS has been working to create a timeline for repayment that would satisfy
CMS requirements yet be sensitive to the hardship that these repayments will impose on hospitals
that are already strapped for cash. In total, $20,892,160 will need to be collected from hospitals that
were deemed overpaid, with those funds eventually being redistributed to hospitals deemed
underpaid per the 2011 DSH audits conducted by Myers and Stauffer. The final 2011 DSH audit
reflects an overpayment to New London Hospital of $842,856.
The preliminary 2012 DSH audit by Myers and Stauffer is currently indicating an overpayment to
New London Hospital of approximately $1.2M. These are not final audit amounts and could change
pending further review.
A suit has been filed by the New Hampshire Hospital Association, along with several other NH
hospitals against CMS over the treatment of dual eligibles in the calculation of uncompensated care
for purposes of the DSH program. An initial hearing related to the suit is scheduled for early
December. This hearing could potentially put the 2011 DSH recoupments on hold pending further
proceedings. Similar suits have already been filed by other States/organizations and the outcome of
these proceedings could eventually affect the

The Effects Of Non Pharmacological Interventions On...
Introduction: Non–pharmacological interventions have been shown to have an impact on the quality
of life of young adults living at home with neurological conditions. Randomised controlled trials are
used to test interventions (Greenhalgh 2014), i.e. non–pharmacological interventions. According to
hospital episode statistics (Health & Social Care Information Centre 2015) 42% of hospital
admissions were due to neurological conditions. Indeed London as a city on its own, neurological
conditions account for 10% of hospital admissions (Strategic Clinical Networks 2015). With 17% of
all hospital admissions in London (Strategic Clinical Networks 2015) being due to neurological
conditions, it is imperative to explore the impact of non–pharmacological interventions on quality of
life. Within research itself (DH 2014, DH 2005, NICE 2014) there is a lack of standards to measure
the quality of life and there is also a lack of evidence of the impact of non–pharmacological
interventions on that very quality of life. While there is a need to explore the impact on quality of
life, there is also a need to gain insight into how the quality of life is both manifested and accounted
for. Randomised controlled trails (RCT), while effective in experiments (Greenhalgh 2014) are
useful evidence in this subjective analysis of quality of life. According to the National Service
Framework (NSF) for Older People (DH 2004) any person below the age of 65 is considered a
young adult. Similarly the National

The Life of Gregor Samsa in The Metamorphosis vs. Joseph Merrick, "Elephant Man"
One person who lived a life that greatly resembled Gregor is Joseph Merrick, the "Elephant Man."
Merrick was afflicted with a genetic disease, possibly Proteus syndrome (James 554), that deformed
him to the point that his skin resembled an elephant. There were bony growths on his face and body.
From difficulty moving around to challenges with communications, there are many similarities

differences is their ability to keep their humanity and enjoy their lives. Their afflictions came on

Gregor 's family found his attempts to talk annoying and irritating. An inability to communicate
easily is a huge blow for someone trying to retain some humanity.
One great difference between the two men is that Merrick was able to communicate if he had
something to write on, whereas Gregor was not able to communicate well at all. Merrick wrote
letters to people who he had met and notes to the doctors and staff at the hospital where he spent
most of his adult life (Treves 1). Gregor tried to communicate by pushing things around, like his
food, and separating the stuff he wanted from what he didn't, so his sister would know what to bring
him. His sister seemed to understand this system of communications as she adjusted his food
accordingly, this made it more difficult for him when she stopped picking up on his hints and did the
minimum possible to keep him alive. He also pushed things around his room and hid when people
were coming in; this showed that he understood that they didn't want to see him. Another major
difference between the two men was that Gregor always had a place to live. Merrick's father and
step–mother kicked him out of the house when he was 15. After that, he lived with an uncle for a
while, but when the uncle's family got too large to support another person he went to a workhouse
(Howell & Ford 51). Gregor always had a place to live, it was the apartment he had rented for his

Christopher Wren Contributions
Christopher Wren's advancements during his time were some of the best and well known. He

architecture. Even with his being sick all the time he still was able to help and contribute. Wren's
many achievements and discoveries as well as his contribution to the London fire lead him to being
remembered in history and influenced other scientists along the way. Christopher Wren's
architecture was greatly influenced by the architecture before him. Medieval and baroque
architecture especially. Baroque architecture is tall arches long hallways and grand entrances and
rooms. Almost everything is covered in gold and intricate designs. There are often mirrors and
windows lining the walls. At the entrance there are usually roman columns. Art and tapestries cover
everything as well. Every the entire building is symmetrical making it look visually pleasing. The
medieval architecture had tall arches and spires throughout the building. The spires were tall
symbolizing to look to God not the world. These attributes among others influenced Wren's designs.
In fact wren said, "The secret of architectural excellence is to translate the proportions of a
dachshund into bricks, mortar and marble." (Geraghty 2).

The Role Of London Landmarks Of London, And 28 Days Later
London has been a hot location for popular films for a long time. With beautiful scenery and an
amazing atmosphere, London can be the backdrop in any film genre. You can see London as a city
of romance, or you can see London as a dark lonely city. There are so many different Landmarks
that are constantly popping up in many films we enjoy. One can watch a film with no knowledge of
the location, and know that it is London right off the bat. With its beautiful landmarks and
extraordinary streets, London has had screen writers hearts from the start. I chose to compare and
contrast the function of London landmarks, and localities in two British films. These films being An
American Werewolf in London, and 28 days later. Both these British films are extremely different
from the films that we have watched in class, and that is why I chose them. An American Werewolf
in London is a British–American comedy–horror film written and directed by John Landis. While he
is an American, this film had British funding. This film is about two American college students,
David Kessler, and Jack Goodman who are backpacking through the UK. It begins to grow dark,
and they decide to stop in a Pub called The slaughtered Lamb. Jack notices a five pointed star on the
wall and asks the locals what this was all about. The pupgoers being grow hostile, and tell the boys

The Ethics Of The Olympic Charter
The Olympic Charter reads: "Olympism is a philosophy of life, exalting and combining in a
balanced whole, the qualities of body, will and mind" ("Olympic movement medical," 2009). The
execution of this moral statement can be exalted through the provided medical services and
personnel that deliver such services during the Olympic Games. The Medical Commission, as an
ordinance from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), aims to provide legislature to protect
the health and well–being of each Olympic athlete ("The Medical Commission", 2014). Its mission

Purpose of Medical Services
There are numerous things that go into preparing for and executing a mega–event, as grand as the
Olympic Games. Every individual who helps orchestrate the events prior to, during and before the
Olympic Games, has an important role. Upon the release of the call for approximately 5,000 medical
volunteers for the upcoming Olympic Games in Rio de Jainero, great emphasis was placed on the
demand for health care personnel ("Calling all doctors!," 2014). They made the following remark
that stated: "without the athletes, the Games cannot happen, but without the [medical] volunteers, it
is the same ("Calling all doctors!," 2014)." The medical personnel have a significant contribution,
for they have task of taking care of athletes, spectators and staff during the Rio 2016 Olympic
Games. Medical staffing has always been a priority, as seen, most recently, in the London 2012
Games.
The London Games demonstrate the work the medical personnel commit to performing, and its
importance to the continuation of the Games. They worked constantly from the start of the Games to
its end (Collier, 2012). Consider these statistics from the London Olympic Games: there were
10,568 athletes present on behalf of 204 competing nations (Collier, 2012). Preliminary estimations

Florence Nightingale : The Joan Of Arc Of Nursing
Florence Nightingale: The Joan of Arc of Nursing Florence Nightingale is known as a pioneer of
public health. Not only was she a fantastic nurse, but aside from working directly with individuals
she also affected populations. She worked hard addressing matters of epidemiology, such as
breaking the chain of infection as well as meticulously measuring health outcomes. She utilized
mortality rates and surveillance in her research methods. Her accomplishments affected thousands of
people. Florence Nightingale was truly a hero towards public health and can be considered the "Joan
of Arc of Nursing".
Direct Care and Towards a Population
Florence Nightingale contributed to society both on a direct level with individuals but also towards
the population as a whole. Along with her efforts as a pioneer researcher, she was known as a
"military nurse" (McDonald, 2003). In 1854, British soldiers began to invade Crimea to support
Turkey. Many sick and wounded soldiers were dying without appropriate medical attention.
Nightingale and thirty–eight other nurses quickly arrived and worked in a British military hospital to
care for these soldiers. Though she put great effort into improving the conditions there, such as
adding water boilers to contribute to laundry sanitation, she spent her nights tending to the sick and
wounded soldiers. She banned other women from the ward at night and delivered all care by herself
(Cohen, 1984). Here, Florence Nightingale's nursing care was individual as it

Another way dystopia is reveled in the novel is through the actions of John. When he is brought
back to London, he does not understand how and why the people live that way. The author makes it
seem as if the people have no feel for what freedom is, it is almost as if they are slaves, trained and
conditioned to do what they are supposed to do. In an attempt to get the people to believe and rebel
against the civilized world, John throws the soma out the window. Soma is a pill that is given to the
workers to take them to a "soma holiday," a place where one is always happy and can not be
bothered by the outside world. After throwing the soma out the window, John and Bernard are taken
to Mustapha Mond's office, a controller of London. John and the Mustapha Mond get into a
discussion about what makes London so great. On page 263 Mustapha Mond says, "[the people are]
ignorant of passion and old age." He is wondering what more anyone could one want besides never
getting old or fat and never having to worry about all the heartaches of passion. The final way the
characters show dystopia is through their speech. Mustapha Mond says, "[the people are] plagued
with no mothers or fathers . . . or lovers . . . they're so conditioned that they practically can not help

Edith Cavell: A Brief Biography
"Someday, somehow, I am going to do something useful, something for people. They are, most of

by the end of World War One, she had saved hundreds of lives and had achieved many other
accomplishments, changing the course of the war. Much of her childhood and early adulthood had a
major impact on the choices that she made later on in her life, changing her world forever. Having a
minister as a father, Cavell was taught at a young age the importance of helping others. Prior to his
death, Edith had taken care of her father during his illness, which later contributed to her decision to
become a nurse. She received training at the London hospital, and was presented with the Maidstone
Medal after caring for victims of an epidemic of Typhoid Fever. She later went to Brussels and
headed a pioneer training school for nurses at Berkindale Institute in 1907. This school consisted of
top quality hospitals, schools and nursing homes by the time the war had started in 1914. World War
One was impacted by Edith Cavell's aiding both German and Allied soldiers as well as by
propaganda after her death, helping to persuade the United States to join the war. During her life, her
contributions to the war started immediately after the invasion of Belgium. While visiting her mom

Marshall Scholarship Analysis

  • 1. Marshall Scholarship Analysis If chosen for the Marshall Scholarship, my first selection of programs would be to pursue the one year Global Health and Development MSc program at University College London (UCL) and the one year International Health Management MSc at Imperial College London. When researching potential programs, I was adamant about finding a highly ranked global health or health management. When I started conducting my research, I found that some of the some of the top rated public health programs are taught at University College London and Imperial College London. As I began to narrow down on these two institutions, I was intrigued by the number of different programs that could be taken up in the field. Specifically, UCL offered around eight different ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first year of my program would allow me to expand my knowledge on global health issues and the use of policy to influence those issues. I am particularly interested in health disparities and learning about how and why certain diseases and outbreaks disproportionately affect specific populations of people. By learning more about epidemiology I can learn the skills necessary to development preventative measures or medical training specific to those populations. In my second year, I believe that I will gain the skills necessary to run a hospital or healthcare system or organization. The modules associated with the module will allow me to enhance critical thinking abilities necessary when solving complex problems in the context of healthcare. I anticipate that these two independently comprehensive programs, together will provide me the tools necessary to accomplish my career goals. My hope is that the Global Health and International Health Management programs will combine epidemiology research, population disparities, health policy and healthcare systems management outside of the scope of U.S. healthcare. It is my vision that the tools I learn here will equip me to influence United States healthcare reform and establish global healthcare ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

She established her own school in 1860 for nurses called the Nightingale Training School of Nurses at the St. Thomas Hospital in London, England. Nightingale was the first woman to ever to be awarded the Order of Merit in 1907 and the Freedom of the City award in 1909. She is credited with inventing the pie chart. Florence Nightingale was the first woman to be elected into the Royal Statistical Society. She is known by many as the "Lady with the Lamp" and the philosopher for modern nursing. International Nurses Day is celebrated on May 12, Nightingale's birthday, in honor of her accomplishments. Florence Nightingale was named after the city in which she was born. She had only one sibling, an older sister named Parthenope. The Nightingale family was a part of a British elite social circle. They were very wealthy and had two comfortable estates, one in Derbyshire and another in Hampshire, both located in England. Nightingale's father was very invested in her education, and by an early age she could already read and write in French, German, Greek, Italian, and Latin. At sixteen, Florence felt a calling from God to decrease human suffering. Even though her mother was from a family of merchants who were very social, Florence Nightingale was very awkward in social situations. She once said, "I attribute my success to this – I never gave or took any excuse" her abilities were uncanny in the world of nursing. When she was working at a war hospital she went around at night with a lamp to check all the patients. Florence was always very humble though. She didn't like talking about her success, so after her death the people writing her biography interviewed her relatives about her early life, her friends and her family, and where she went for her nursing jobs. She refused to accept a domestic role and who fought to change the prevalent Victorian attitude that women and men could not be equal. Eventually, she enrolled as a nurse at Middlesex Hospital and attended lectures given to the male student doctors. This lasted only a few months, as the students complained about her attendance when she started to outshine them in lectures. However, they didn't stop her, she continued to persevere. This is an example of the attitude barriers that Garrett Anderson had to overcome in order to achieve her goal, as women, again as stated before, were often held back due to the arrangement in society. Elizabeth worked extremely hard to work through all the negative aspect that came along with achieving this profession; it was her drive and ambition that sailed her through. "She turned to private study and was taught anatomy at the London Hospital and general medicine under the tuition of professors at St Andrews University and Edinburgh University Extra–Mural School"(Brooks 13–15). None of this would have been possible without the continued financial and moral support of her father. In order to practice medicine, Garrett had to gain a qualifying diploma. London University, the Royal Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons and other examining bodies refused to allow her to sit their examinations, but she discovered that the Society of Apothecaries did not specifically ban women from taking their exams. Florence Nightingale was born in Italy in 1820 and was named Florence after her birthplace. A brilliant child, Florence attained outstanding academic achievement in her years attending school. Florence grew up to be a lively and attractive young woman, admired in her families elite social circle and was expected to make a good marriage, but Florence had other concerns. Florence, now thirty–one went to work at Kaserworth Hospital in Germany, and was later promoted and moved to a hospital in London. In 1854 Britain, France and Turkey declared war on Russia, marking the begging of the Crimean War. The allies had the upper hand in the war but there were vast criticisms of the medical felicities for the wounded soldiers. In response, Florence asked and was granted permission to take a group of thirty–eight women nurses to look after the British soldiers fighting in the war. Nightingale found the conditions of the hospitals appalling. The men were kept in rooms without blankets or decent food. Unwashed, they were still wearing their army uniforms, "still with dirt and gore". In these conditions, Florence was not surprised that war wounds accounted for one out of every six deaths in the war. Diseases such at typhus, chorea, and dysentery ran rampant among the wounded soldiers. Military officers and doctors objected to Nightingale's view of reforming military hospitals. They interpreted her comments as an attack and she was made to feel unwelcome. Nightingale received very little help from the military until she used a contact from the London Times to report the details of the way that the British Army treated its wounded soldiers. Cutting Edge Advancements To Karly Meyer April 8, 2017 Cutting Edge Advancements to 19th Century Surgery Great Britain in the early 1800s was not the pleasant place we know today. There was garbage rotting on the streets, waste tossed out windows or into the River Thames, London's supply of clean drinking water (or so they thought), and was unhealthily overpopulated due to the growth of industry caused by the invention of the steam engine. Especially in cities, households were tightly packed and overcrowded, allowing infectious diseases and bacteria to spread rapidly. Open drains and sewers flowed alongside unpaved streets while inadequate toilet facilities overflowed and seeped into cellar dwellings. The air was filthy; it was filled with the stench of rotting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Robert Liston was a Scottish surgeon commonly called 'the fastest knife in the West End' and was determined to improve the poor odds of surgery in the early 19th century. For most of Liston's career, he was known for his boldness and speed in major surgical interventions; he could amputate a leg in under 2 ½ minutes. Although it seems careless, speed was essential to minimizing the patient 's pain and improving their odds of surviving surgery in the age before anesthesia. Liston's success rates were fairly good: only about one of every 10 of his patients died on his operating table at London 's University College Hospital whereas, the surgeons at nearby St. Bartholomew 's lost approximately one in every four. However, Dr. Liston's speed caused multiple unfortunate casualties in his operating theater. Due to Dr. Robert Liston's extreme speed, he accidentally took off a patient 's testicles along with the leg that was being amputated. During another leg amputation, Liston managed to perform the only known surgery in history with a 300 percent mortality rate. As Liston cut through the leg hastily, he cut off his surgical assistant 's fingers and while switching instruments, slashed a spectator 's coat. Unfortunately, the patient and the assistant both died from wound infections and the spectator died of shock. Liston not only had a swift and (mostly) steady slice, but he ... This is deffinately where their priorities should lie as they are trying to sell the image that the public hospitals have the right equipment and people. Performance measures for assessment of customer services The assessment of customer services is one that can be measured in a number of different ways. Firstly through the NHS ratings the length of time that someone has to wait in A&E generally should be 4 hours or less – Both hospitals were considered unsatisfactory. Customer Services goes further than just the waiting time at A&E, although it might be looked at as an important element within a hospital. The Royal Free give priority to their training schemes as laid out in their aims. They train all types of workers, from doctors to mid–wives. Smallpox is a contagious and deadly disease especially if a person has not been vaccinated. Smallpox is a Variola virus and part of the Genus Orthopoxvirus. In 1857, Simon helped the England government relize how the upper and middle class within London have significantly less deaths from small pox as they're vaccinated. This help give the rise to the 1867 Vaccination Act. Smallpox reproduction occurs when the virus attaches itself to a host cell that it inserts its RNA code into the cell. It will also increase the chances of sick people getting better as workers will feel more comfortable when using this equipment to perform surgeries on sick people. Another role the advertising agency had for the promotional campaign was to attract their target market through their website, which are parents and children. Parents who are not experiencing the same situation with their children are more likely to put down donations than those who are experiencing this situation. This may be due to them feeling thankful that their children do not have any dangerous conditions and they will feel sympathetic towards the sick children. This could cause them to make generous donations as no parents would like to witness any child going through extreme pain and suffering. The business strives to help children specifically, considering the fact that they undergo situations like this more than adults. Reaching out to their target market will attract people to visit their hospital and see for themselves how children are struggling with the terrible state that they are in. It reminds ... The London Hospital was not equipped to take care of an "incurable patient" so Carr Gomm talked to other hospitals and institutions no one would take Merrick. Carr Gomm put a letter in the New York Times giving an outline of Joseph Carey Merrick's life. In result of this letter the public gave much support. This support earned enough money to get Merrick a place to spend the rest of his life in the hospital under watch by the nurses and staff. Merrick's case attracted many people. Many people visited Merrick in the hospital and continued to give funds. One important person out of the many that visited Merrick was the Princess of Wales Alexandra. Since Merrick had so many supporters he was able to fulfill all of his desires before he died. I personally do not agree with his views, because business ethics is much more than a label. Business ethics, while sometimes not followed in the case of HealthSouth and other companies that commit fraud, is a way to keep companies in line. Principle 2 Similar themes as principle 2 are discussed in principle 7 of the DH (2010) principles and in principle 9 of the RCN (2010) principles. These themes largely focus on patient participation, patient choice and promoting independence. When it comes to organising, decision–making and conducting activities relating to care delivery, Efraimisson & Sandman et al (2004) highlight that both public opinion and the law dictates that patients have the right to be involved. Foss & Askautrud (2010) discuss, that involving elderly patients in this process during a hospital admission is believed to strengthen their ability to cope with everyday life upon discharge. Wells (2007) also informs us that there are varying levels of patient participation which include the providing of information such as leaflets, direct discussions, and patient involvement. Whilst in hospital care Mrs. Blue was encouraged to be involved in her care. Nurses would regularly provide education and support on how to promote health and well–being. DSH Audits NH DHHS has been in contact with the New Hampshire Hospital Association and New Hampshire hospitals to discuss the 2011 DSH audit results and outline a recoupment process for hospitals with excess payments. NH DHHS has been working to create a timeline for repayment that would satisfy CMS requirements yet be sensitive to the hardship that these repayments will impose on hospitals that are already strapped for cash. In total, $20,892,160 will need to be collected from hospitals that were deemed overpaid, with those funds eventually being redistributed to hospitals deemed underpaid per the 2011 DSH audits conducted by Myers and Stauffer. • 58. The Effects Of Non Pharmacological Interventions On... Introduction: Non–pharmacological interventions have been shown to have an impact on the quality of life of young adults living at home with neurological conditions. Randomised controlled trials are used to test interventions (Greenhalgh 2014), i.e. non–pharmacological interventions. According to hospital episode statistics (Health & Social Care Information Centre 2015) 42% of hospital admissions were due to neurological conditions. Indeed London as a city on its own, neurological conditions account for 10% of hospital admissions (Strategic Clinical Networks 2015). With 17% of all hospital admissions in London (Strategic Clinical Networks 2015) being due to neurological conditions, it is imperative to explore the impact of non–pharmacological interventions on quality of life. Within research itself (DH 2014, DH 2005, NICE 2014) there is a lack of standards to measure the quality of life and there is also a lack of evidence of the impact of non–pharmacological interventions on that very quality of life. While there is a need to explore the impact on quality of life, there is also a need to gain insight into how the quality of life is both manifested and accounted for. Randomised controlled trails (RCT), while effective in experiments (Greenhalgh 2014) are useful evidence in this subjective analysis of quality of life. One great difference between the two men is that Merrick was able to communicate if he had something to write on, whereas Gregor was not able to communicate well at all. Merrick wrote letters to people who he had met and notes to the doctors and staff at the hospital where he spent most of his adult life (Treves 1). Gregor tried to communicate by pushing things around, like his food, and separating the stuff he wanted from what he didn't, so his sister would know what to bring him. His sister seemed to understand this system of communications as she adjusted his food accordingly, this made it more difficult for him when she stopped picking up on his hints and did the minimum possible to keep him alive. He also pushed things around his room and hid when people were coming in; this showed that he understood that they didn't want to see him. Another major difference between the two men was that Gregor always had a place to live. Merrick's father and step–mother kicked him out of the house when he was 15. Upon the release of the call for approximately 5,000 medical volunteers for the upcoming Olympic Games in Rio de Jainero, great emphasis was placed on the demand for health care personnel ("Calling all doctors!," 2014). They made the following remark that stated: "without the athletes, the Games cannot happen, but without the [medical] volunteers, it is the same ("Calling all doctors!," 2014)." The medical personnel have a significant contribution, for they have task of taking care of athletes, spectators and staff during the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Not only was she a fantastic nurse, but aside from working directly with individuals she also affected populations. She worked hard addressing matters of epidemiology, such as breaking the chain of infection as well as meticulously measuring health outcomes. She utilized mortality rates and surveillance in her research methods. Her accomplishments affected thousands of people. Florence Nightingale was truly a hero towards public health and can be considered the "Joan of Arc of Nursing". Direct Care and Towards a Population Florence Nightingale contributed to society both on a direct level with individuals but also towards the population as a whole. Along with her efforts as a pioneer researcher, she was known as a "military nurse" (McDonald, 2003). In 1854, British soldiers began to invade Crimea to support Turkey. Many sick and wounded soldiers were dying without appropriate medical attention. Nightingale and thirty–eight other nurses quickly arrived and worked in a British military hospital to care for these soldiers. Though she put great effort into improving the conditions there, such as adding water boilers to contribute to laundry sanitation, she spent her nights tending to the sick and wounded soldiers. When he is brought back to London, he does not understand how and why the people live that way. The author makes it seem as if the people have no feel for what freedom is, it is almost as if they are slaves, trained and conditioned to do what they are supposed to do. In an attempt to get the people to believe and rebel against the civilized world, John throws the soma out the window. Soma is a pill that is given to the workers to take them to a "soma holiday," a place where one is always happy and can not be bothered by the outside world. After throwing the soma out the window, John and Bernard are taken to Mustapha Mond's office, a controller of London. John and the Mustapha Mond get into a discussion about what makes London so great. On page 263 Mustapha Mond says, "[the people are] ignorant of passion and old age." He is wondering what more anyone could one want besides never getting old or fat and never having to worry about all the heartaches of passion. The final way the characters show dystopia is through their speech. Mustapha Mond says, "[the people are] plagued with no mothers or fathers . . . or lovers . . . they're so conditioned that they practically can not help behaving as they ought to behave" (264).
