1. The Others Trailer Analysis

daughter arguing about someone

the trailer.
At 26” kids are introduced to the
new nanny and staff with spooky
non-diegetic sound.
At 10” the same scene
switches to a high angle
shot making the actress
look vulnerable as the
chandelier shakes with
voice over.
“Are you going to leave
us too” little girl asks
the nanny while in the
kitchen at 30”
The next scenes are clips of
action throughout the film
which last for 13 seconds giving
a little taster of what will
happen.
A flash out at 1’10”
divides the action in the
trailer.

Establishing shot of the big house with
fog makes it look very eerie.
During this there are fade
outs between the
meeting and in the
kitchen scenes.
At 17” there are clips of inside of the house with voice over
“as you can see the house is rather neglected since the
servants disappeared almost a week ago. This creates
suspicion for the audience.
“They did and then it happened” little
girls tells the nanny and then the scene
cuts to a blackout.

At 59” the mother has a frightful panic
in the spare room pulling dust rags of
furniture for 12 seconds – this could
mean she is curious about what her
daughter is saying.
An over the shoulder shot of the nanny
talking to the little girl at 48” consoling to her
that she sees whatever the little girl sees too.
Another black out at
1’24” for another divide
otherwise the audience
will not grasp the
concept of the story.
At 1’26” the two kids are in the
cupboard with their hands over
their mouths – indicating that
they could be frightened.
Tone card at 1’33” with a
humming sound in the
background which creates
a creepy atmosphere.
High angle shot of the mother
from the stair case, making her
look vulnerable and weak.
The humming follows on with a scene
of an elderly lady playing with toys
and the mother approaching her. This
scene has been added at the end as
its quiet spooky and will leave a
taster for the audience.
