To qualify for Habitat for Humanity housing in the United
States, applicants have to meet several criteria. First, they
must pass an extensive background check. Character
references as well as employer recommendations are
required from candidates during this portion of the
process. A financial audit is also necessary for Habitat to
Humanity to determine each candidate's economic
status.

3. HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
 Once selected, prospective homeowners are
obligated to put 500 hours of sweat equity into their
new home, although this requirement varies
depending on the person's schedule and physical
condition. After the home is complete, each
homeowner agrees to pay a no-interest mortgage
that does not surpass 30 percent of their monthly
income. The payments are made to Habitat for
Humanity, which uses the funds for future building
projects.
If a homeowner decides to sell his or her home
before the mortgage is paid in full, then the home is
bought by Habitat for Humanity at market value.
