After the war, the then president promised citizens that they would be having equal
treatment in all sections, including public places; schools, hospitals, churches and also be
allowed to vote (Brenner 12). The initiative was meant to establish how the whites and blacks
could live together in unity.
The blacks enjoyed the period after the civil war where they could vote freely, were
involved in the political processes actively, they could acquire land voluntarily, and were
employed like the whites. However, those who were against it began a motion against these
rights given to the blacks and in the event, there was bloodshed.
Examples of Jim crows’ laws stated that marriages between whites and blacks were not
allowed, education for children was to be conducted separately; white children to be taught
independently from the blacks. No white barbers were allowed to serve blacks and vice versa. In
the restaurants, the whites were to be served exclusively and the blacks separately.
The fourteenth amendment was meant to bring equality to all citizens of America,
disregarding the racial differences. They could now practice all their constitutional freedoms,
including voting, attending public places and participating in political processes. The amendment
applied to all the people born in America or those who were citizens by naturalization. Also, it
was intended to lift the blacks to the same level as the whites.

Another motive was to make sure the congressmen maintained their positions. The
Supreme Court limited its protection by saying that the fair treatment of people was only
applicable when a right, rather than a privilege was deprived. These rights were to be protected
by the law and its requirements. Hence, it refused to render protection to the Negro population.
