There was a civil war from 1936 to 1939 between those who wanted a dictatorship and those who did not, which was won by the anti-dictatorship side. Spain also won its war of independence against France in 1812 after being invaded in 1808. The constitution of Cadiz was created in 1814 but abolished by the king. The current Spanish constitution was created in 1978 under King Juan Carlos I and President Adolfo Suarez.
