BUSINESS – SENIOR 3 – TERM 3 – DECEMBER 2016
Patel fashion is a retail business which sellswomen’s cloths. It employs15 sales staff who work in
the shop and 5 more who work in the offices. There is one shop manager who is in charge of the
business. Eachof the salesstaff hasaspecificjobandtheyonlydothisone task.Forexample,some
just serve customers at the pay desk, some look after the fitting room, and others look after the
clothesondisplay.Employeeskeepleavingandthe shopmanagerregularlyhastoadvertisefornew
employees. “I do not like having to spendso much time interviewing applicants for salesassistant
jobs. I wish the employees would not keep leaving”, said Marie, the shop manager.
A) Discuss all the different financial and non-financial benefits the store manager could use to
improve motivationatthe shop,inordertopreventworkersfromleavingsoregularly.Whichwould
be the best method for her to employ and why?
B) Would job rotation be the best method for Marie to use in order to increase job satisfaction?
What do both terms (job rotation and job satisfaction) mean and imply? Explain your answer.
C) State which management style (democratic / autocratic / laissez-faire) you would suggest for i)
Theory X managers and ii) Theory Y managers. Explain your choice.
D) Explainwhycommunicationisalwaysimportantinabusinessandwhattypesof communication
can be used. In which situation would you recommend each?
