This document is a screenplay that tells the story of Kim, a young mother living in poverty. Social services takes her baby, Molly, away from her due to neglect. Distraught, Kim turns to drugs and begins selling molly (MDMA) with her friend Ashley to make money. The screenplay ends with Kim and Ashley taking some of the molly and having a hallucinatory experience while listening to classical music, smiling at each other as they pass out on the floor.
2. INT.FLAT BEDROOM - EARLY MORNING
A BARRICADED WINDOW. Light is piercing through a gap where
two wooden boards don’t meet. The light is gleaming and
brightening the darkness.
Silence fills a cramped and decayed room full of grime and
litter piled up the walls.
CLOSE ON a rusty can of beans. A used baby’s nappy.An empty
packs of roll-ups.
The dirty white wallpaper is peeling off the walls. Water
drips from the ceiling into a bowl filled with used
cigarettes.
There is a mattress in the middle of the room. On it lies a
young man, asleep with his mouth wide open; dressed in a
ragged grey top and skinny jeans. He has brown short hair,
scrawny legs and strong facial features that create
abnormal shadows under his eyes.
Next to him lies a skinny woman dressed in a cream
nightgown. Her eyebrows are thick and lips are voluptuous.
Her hair so dark it makes her skin look cold and intensely
pale. If it weren’t for her breathing, she would look dead.
A faint tapping noise builds into louder and recognizable
sounds of aggressive banging on a wooden door.
KIM awakes inhaling a huge breath. She panics and slams her
hand down the side of the mattress. She grasps a rolled up
bin bag then relaxes.
A Cacophony of sounds builds. A baby is crying. Someone is
banging at the door. Kim is still disorientated but turns
to MIKE and shakes him.
3. KIM
(Urgently)
Mike
He doesn’t respond.
INT. FLAT ENTRANCE CORRIDOR. EARLY MORNING.
Kim stumbles groggily out of the bedroom. The banging is
louder now and the thin wooden door is vibrating on its
hinges. She cautiously opens the door. Three tall men and 2
women are stood in the corridor.Two of the men are black
and well build, dressed in security uniforms. The third man
is an older man wearing a suit.
The women are wearing matching uniforms with black pencil
dresses and hair scraped into a bun. They are looking at
Kim andjudging the contrast between their
aestheticappearances.
The baby is still crying but is seems that Kim doesn’t
notice it.
SECURITY MAN
(Calmly)
Is this the household of Kim Granger?
He looks down on a piece of paper.
…mother of Molly Granger?
KIM
Yeah, why?
The security man pulls out an ID from his pocket and shows
it to Kim
SECURITY MAN
We’re a team from the Social Services and we have an order
to take your daughter into care Miss Granger.
Kim pauses and absorbs the situation. She stares at the man
4. then attempts to slam the door, but he stops it just in
time.
SECUIRY MAN
We have the right to take your daughter into care Miss
Granger; you have to let us in.
KIM
(Shouting violently)
My daughter is fine now get the fuck away from my house
THE FIRST WOMAN
(In a low voice)
She doesn’t sound like she’s fine
Kim attempts to bark back. One of the men pushes his way
through the door and enters the flat. Kim backs away then
runs to the room next to her.
INT. MOLLY’S ROOM. EARLY MORNING.
Molly’s room is painted in a light blue colour; however
half of the wall was not finishedand is still dirty cream.
The wooden cot is placed in the middle of the room. Inside
of the cot lies Molly screaming and crying. Kim steps over
a blanket, which is covered with toys. She urgently grabs
Molly out of her cot and hugs her. The man follows her
inside of the room.
KIM
Don’t touch her, don’t touch her you hear me!
Kim moves to the corner of the room, trying to get as far
from the man as she can. A woman also enters.
THE WOMAN
(Peacefully)
She will be fine, now give her here.
5. KIM
(Shouts)
NO!
Mike appears in the room secured by the third man, he is
holding the black bag waving it to the man who has Kim.
Mike looks frozen and shocked. His face is colorless and
still.
The baby screams agitatedly. The security man grab Kim’s
arm while the women takes the baby and rushes out of the
room.
Kim starts scratching and pushing, forcefully trying to
make her way after the woman. She fails. The two men grab
Kim and her feet start to kick and fight for movement. She
then burst into tears.
KIM
No … my baby
A STILL ON Kim’s face crying.
FADE TO BLACK.
BLACK SCREEN
TITLE CARD: MOLLY
As this TITLE CARD FADES out, a second TITLE appears by
being ‘typed’ on the side of the screen.
1. Molly
Abr. of 'molecular'.Pure form of MDMA (ecstasy), usually a
free powder or in capsules. Oftentimes MDA is sold as
molly. Should be white in color (when it's pure) but is
more often beige or yellow-brown, and sometimes brown or
rarely gray.
6. KIM.
(V/O)
(peacefullyas though comforting a child.)
Molly… Molly
FADE TO…
INT. ASHLEY’S FLAT. LIVING ROOM. DAY.
CLOSE ON Kim holding an opened up, black bag. Inside there
are packs of beige powder, sealed in clear bags. She is
rattling the plastic bags close to ASHLEY’s ear.
Ashley has long brown hair tied in a side ponytail with
edgy face piercings on her right eyebrow. She’s dressed in
all black, which makes her looksinister in the shadows of
the small flat living room.
She is asleep on a wooden kitchen chair with her feet up on
a crooked tea table; holding a burnt out cigarette that’s
ashes haven’t yet fallen to the ground.
Ashley wakes up and looks at Kim. She jumps of the chair;
checking again if what she is seeing is true.
ASHLEY
(Cheerfully)
What-Ha-You- You got it
KIM
(Confidently)
He bought it
ASHLEY
Just like that?
KIM
Yep, it was that easy.
7. ASHLEY
Wait until Mike hears about this
Kim smiles and performs a shaky dance, circling around
Ashley. They both start to laugh. Kim then drops the bag
and sits on the chair, which Ashley was sat on. She crosses
her legs and chews her gum noisily, looking up at Ashley.
Ashley passes Kim a cigarette. Kim places it in her mouth
and Ashley lights it for her.
Kim goes silent and suddenly looks thoughtful while looking
deeply at Ashley.
KIM
Ash?
ASHLEY
What?
KIM
Do you sometimes-just sit there and like- imagine our lives
different- you know…rich, happily married. Living in a
massive house.
Ashley picks up one of the packs full of beige powder and
sits on the floor close to Kim looking at her closely.She
starts playing with the consistency of the powder.
ASHLEY
(Confused)
I dunno…
Ashley lights her cigarette and inhales; looking up at the
ceiling.
…kind off.
8. KIM
Yeah, I know Rich fuckers think they’re posh and better
than everybody elsebut you know, I cant help thinking what
life would be likenot risking your God damn ass trying to
make a bargain with a dealer. Imagine just having drugs.
Like that…
Ashley clicks her fingers
KIM (cont.)
…and having people offer you them just to give you the
honor of licking your ass.
Kim flicks the ash of her cigarette into an empty bottle of
beer that is placed on the tea table. She then continues to
chew her gum loudly.
ASHLEY
Yeah of coarse I picture shit like that and of course I
would want that, who wouldn’t? But think about it. Their
life aren’t that perfect. They get fooled by people they
think are their friends.
(Builds her tone)
And then they think they rule the world with their rich
Asses, judging people like us. They don’t know shit about
us but they still treat us like a piece of shit. Now why
would you want to be like them?
KIM
I didn’t say I wanted to be like them. I want their money
that’s all I want.
ASHLEY
Ashley exhales profoundly.
(Calmly)
Well if we sell a whole lot of this shit…
9. Ashley waves one of the concealed packages full of beige
powder in front of Kim.
… We will be swimming in money baby.
Kim laughs
Ashley picks up a tin box from the tea table. She opens it
and takes out a small pocketknife and pierces the package.
ASHLEY
This is the nice stuff, better and stronger than any luxury
furniture or car we can dream off.
KIM
Pure molly ready to be inhaled mixed and sold.
ASHLEY
Do you want to try it first?
Kim pours some of the powder on the tin lid.
KIM
Why not.
THE TIN LID.Ashley lines up the powder into two streaks
using a business card. Her hands are shaky and unstable.
Kim kneels down and inhales the powder through her nose.
Kim exhales noisly though her mouth.
ASHLEY
And?
KIM
(Excitedly)
Its good… Oh it’s real good.
Kim and Ashley smile then Ashley inhales the second line.
They are both quiet. Ashley nods her head.
10. ASHLEY
Oh yeah
Kim’s body loosens up. Her face relaxes but the smile still
stays the same. Ashley passes her hand to Kim and their
hands join. They both stare at each other with empty
expressions.
CLOSE ON Ashley’s hand slipping away from Kim’s.
Ashley’s body flops to her left side and she is now slumped
on the floor.
Kim looks down on Ashley and laughs heavily while still
being sat on the chair.
A POINT OF VIEW SHOT: Kim is staring dreamily at the wall
in front of her. Her laugh is replaced by a tranquil
expression. She blurinly focuses on the centre of the wall
and on a dark outline where a paining once hung. Within the
darkcentre an orange blotch appears. The blotch then grows
and developsinto bright vibrant blue, red and orange. These
colours then spread into the rest of the wall like wild
fire. She looks around the room and the colours
bleedthroughout the dull and dirty walls. The room becomes
unrecognizable.
The silence turns into few notes of a violin which start to
hum then gradually build into loud classical tunes. The old
and broken furniture become new, elegant and luxurious with
a crystal chandelier lowering from the ceiling and stopping
to hang in front of her.
Kim’s eyes twitch and her face weakens. The room gets smoky
and cloudy behind her.Her eyes start to wander around the
room. Her body suddenly reclines and falls to her right, of
the chair. It moves in slow motion and gradually hits the
furry cream carpet.
Ashley and Kim are facing each other, gazing into each
other’s eyes. Their breathing is steady and a smile grows
on both of their faces.
Kim slowly closes her eyes. The violin music gently fades
down.
FADE TO BLACK.
