In life we have who we are on the inside, and who we portray to be. This portrayal of who we are is
called impression management. As stated on WiseGeek.com, "Impression management is the way
people influence how others think about something else, usually themselves. People usually do this
either to get something they want from others or to establish an independent identity." This tells us
that what we say and do effects the way aspects in society are viewed. The way I view myself, and
the way others view me may not go hand in hand, or they can be the same. We try to make ourselves
be viewed a certain way through our actions and the things we say. To view the difference between
how I view myself and how others view me, I asked 3 different people their opinions of myself.
Personally, I am a hardworking and dedicated person who fully commits to a task. When it comes to
school, teaching, and relationships I put in 110 percent in order to be the best I can be. As an
outgoing individual, I enjoy speaking to others to learn from other people's lives. My life has not
been easy, even though others may think it has been a breeze. I have many health problems, all
invisible, that continue to affect my everyday life. After my brain surgery last January, I have begun
to better value my time alive. Everyone has hardships, trials, and tribulations, but how we use them
to build us is another. Due to my life struggles, I am a very caring and understanding person. I love
people, animals and just life in general. I am honest and will tell anyone my honest opinion even if
they do not ask. Long story short, I am not just a pretty face. I am honest, smart, caring, loving, and
I value life to my best ability. While I believe all of this about myself, others may not see it. For
example, if someone were to say "I love God" while robbing stores would people view them as a
Christian or a felon? Most likely they would first view them as a felon. In life it is important to be
true to yourself so that others can know who you are as well.
As a sibling, you know your family as well as the back of your hand if you are close. With being

Impression management is the desire with an effort to control and influence the perceptions of other
people about myself. It could be about me as the subject, my material possession or an event
revolving around me. My primary goal of impression management is to create a perception in the
minds which are consistent with my goals. Sociologists over time have introduced concepts trying
to explain and put into context human behavior that tries to impress others. One of these is
dramaturgy that puts human beings in a setting of a play as actors. I will try to dramatize situations
about myself in order to manage an impression about me before others. In sociology, there are
various mechanisms referred to as sign–vehicles that human beings use to present themselves to
others. The most commonly employed sign–vehicles are social setting, appearance, and manner of
interacting.
A social setting is the physical place where the interaction takes place. This place is pre–arranged,
and things put there have a clear message to convey. The setting is decorated; props used should
able to give a clue on how I want the people to thinks about me. Secondly, appearance speaks
volumes about me as people's impressions are based almost exclusively on appearance. Lastly, the
manner of interacting consists of attitudes we convey in an attempt to get others to form certain

The Presentation of Self In Everyday Life is a work developed by noted sociologist Erving
Goffman. In it, Goffman details the sociological perspective of our social interactions. He uses the
metaphor of theatre to better understand the complexities surrounding interactions; it is from this
seminal text that we establish words from the dramaturgical framework such as performance,
backstage, front–stage, and costume as illustrations of interactionism. He begins the book by
addressing the idea of performance. For Goffman, performance refers to " all the activity of any
individual which occurs during a period marked by his continuous presence before a particular set
of observers and which has some influence on the observers." (Goffman, 1959) In other words,
performance is an analogy in reference to how a person acts, in both the front stage and backstage,
for their audience. Because in every social interaction we are putting on a performance, Goffman

back stage are critical in understanding how the interaction between individual and audience is
carried out. The front stage or region is where the superior more desirable impressions of the self are
brought forth; in the background, actors display a private and more nuanced version of the self as

management are linked to accounting narratives. Dhanani and Connolly (2012) （r32）stated that
the disclosure of the annual report could be seen as "the wrong organizational reality". Thus, the

I analyzed Facebook postings from a person B, who is my friend. I found the following theme on
her Facebook which there were three pictures of the person B with her boyfriend, one when they
were hugging each other and facing to the beach. The other two when they were eating in the
restaurants. There were also a lot of pictures of food the person was eating, the place she was
hanging out with her family and friends. I also found two images when she stayed at home. Besides
that, there were four selfie photos when she was getting ready to go out. She called that were the

My College Experience : The Best Experience In College
I was always told that the time spent in college is some of the best of your life, that the friends you
make will last a lifetime, that you can truly be yourself in college. So far that has yet to be proved
true, its not to say that college has been the worst experience of my life but I have yet to find my
place. When I look around at others it seems they already have a place, and not wanting to bel left
out I have began to play the role of someone that truly belongs. My performance as Goffman would
call it is a form of impression management, but it is no less me than me in other situations. " The

The self I present is my front, it is a combination of the setting, my mannerisms and my appearance.
The setting informs the definition of the situation, different situations invoke different presentation
of selves. In a college setting one is expected to fit in, to have friends, to go out, have fun and to be
yourself. Apparence are clothing choices, makeup accessories, and mannerisms are the small habits
picked up to enforce the impression of your self. At college I have tried to portray a well adjusted
student, who has found her place and always has something to do. To create my outgoing image I
try to be in my dorm room as little as possible. This can be easily achieved during the weekdays, I
have classes through part of the day and the rest of the day can be spent at a table doing work. It is
also easy to spend the night at the library and come home at 12 or 1. The weekend provides a harder
challenge, especially the nights. Working every Friday night was a blessing in disguise, what I once

efficacy, meaning that I hold an opinion that I would succeed in an interview.
Turning attention to the actual interview, it was conducted face–to–face on company's premises and
my interviewer was a middle–aged white woman. From the first seconds of the interview she had an
open body language and she maintained a good eye contact. Armstrong (2012) indicates that such
behaviour helps to establish the good rapport with the applicant and it was certainly true in my case.
It was a structured employment interview as I was asked a set of prepared questions (Levashina et
al. 2014) that explored if I possessed skills and competencies required for the job position. As the
interviewer followed the script, it led to the consistency in information received, implying more
accurate selection decision (Garcia et al. 2008).
