3. BLS – What and Why?
Combines Chest compressions and supportive
rescue breathing
Revives heart (cardio) and lung (pulmonary)
functioning
Use when there is no breathing and no
pulse
Provides oxygen to the brain until ABLS arrives
7. BLS Sequence – Step 2
Check the victim for a response
Gently shake his shoulders and ask loudly,
'Are you alright?'
8. BLS Sequence – Step 3
a) If he/she responds:
Leave him/her in the position in which you find
him provided there is no further danger
Try to find out what is wrong with him/her and
get help if needed
Reassess him/her regularly
9. BLS Sequence – Step 3
b) If he does not respond:
Shout for help
10. BLS Sequence
Turn the victim onto his back and then open
the airway using head tilt and chin lift
11. BLS Sequence – Step 4
Keeping the airway open, look, listen and feel
for normal breathing
Look for chest movement
Listen at the victim's mouth for breath sounds
Feel for air on your cheek
12. BLS Sequence – Step 5
a) If breathing normally, turn him/her into
recovery position
13. BLS Sequence – Step 5
b) If not breathing normally
Ask for an ambulance
Kneel by the side of the victim
Place the heel of one hand in the
centre of the victim's chest
14. BLS Sequence – Step 5
c) Place the heel of your other hand on top of
the first hand
15. BLS Sequence – Step 6
Interlock the fingers of
your hands
Ensure pressure is not
applied over victim's
ribs
Do not apply pressure
over the upper
abdomen or bottom
end of bony sternum
16. BLS Sequence – Step 6
Position yourself vertically
above the victim's chest
With your arms straight,
press down the
sternum 4-5 cm
17. BLS Sequence – Step 7
After each compression, release all the
pressure on the chest without losing contact
between your hands and the sternum
Repeat at a rate of about 100 times a minute
(a little less than 2 compressions a second)
Compression and release should take an equal
amount of time
18. BLS Sequence – Step 8
Combine chest
compression with
rescue breaths
After 30 compressions,
open the airway again
using head tilt and chin
lift
19. BLS Sequence – Step 9
Pinch the soft part of the victim's nose closed, using the
index finger and thumb of your hand on his forehead
Allow his mouth to open, but maintain chin lift
21. BLS Sequence
Combine chest compression with rescue breaths
After 30 compressions, open the airway again using
head tilt and chin lift
Pinch the soft part of the victim's nose closed, using
the index finger and thumb of your hand on his
forehead
Allow his mouth to open, but maintain chin lift
