3. HOW THE INTERNET WORKS
The Internet provides immediate and direct contact
with all computers on the network.
All Internet computers have an Internet address (IP
address).
Internet service providers (ISPs) sell subscriptions to
the public.
Its interoperability feature enables access for all types
of computers.
Large organizations maintain the Internet.
Many private and public networks are linked together to
provide a worldwide networking system.
Packet switching technology is used to transmit data.
4. BASIC SERVICES OF THE
INTERNET
Electronic Mail (E-Mail) –
Allow user to send a mail (message ) to another internet user
in any part of the world in a near-real-time manner .
File Transfer Protocol (FTP) –
Allow user to move a file from one computer to another on
the internet.
Telnet –
Allow a user to log into another computer somewhere on the
internet .
5. The File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a
standard network protocol used to transfer
computer files from one host to another host
over a TCP-based network, such as the
Internet. FTP is built on a client-server
architecture and uses separate control and
data connections between the client and the
server.

6. INTERNET AND WEB: WHAT’S
THE DIFFERENCE?
The Internet is the physical connection of millions of
networks.
The Web uses the Internet for its existence.
The Web consists of hypertext embedded on Web
pages that are hosted on Web sites.
7. THE WEB SITE
A Web site is a collection of
related Web documents that
are made available to the
public.
The index page, or home
page, is the first page of a
Web site.
Web pages are individual
Web documents.

9. WEB BROWSERS AND SERVERS
Web browsers display a Web document and enable
users to link to other Web pages.
The first browsers were text-only.
Mosaic was the first graphical browser.
Web servers respond to the requests of browsers.
They find and send requested resources back to the
browser.
10. Web addresses are an addressing system that identifies
where a Web resource is located.
The uniform resource locator (URL) is the standard
used to identify Web resources.
The URL consists of:
URL
WEB ADDRESSES (URLS)
http://
Protocol

the means
of access
www.yahoo.com/
Server contains
the domain
name of the
Web server
help/shop/
Path
identifies the
location of the
document
shop-01.html
Resource
specifies the
filename of the
resource
11. Telnet is a application layer protocol
used on the Internet or local area
networks to provide a bidirectional
interactive text-oriented
communication facility using a
virtual terminal connection.
Telnet was developed in 1969 beginning
with RFC 15, extended in RFC 854, and
standardized as Internet Engineering
Task Force (IETF) Internet
Standard STD 8, one of the first
Internet standards.
12. A web search engine is a software system that is
designed to search for information on the World Wide
Web. The search results are generally presented in a
line of results often referred to as search engine results
pages (SERPs). The information may be a mix of web
pages, images, and other types of files. Some search
engines also mine data available in databases or open
directories. Unlike web directories, which are
maintained only by human editors, search engines also
maintain real-time information by running an
algorithm on a web crawler.
13. Electronic mail, most commonly
referred to as email or e-mail since
around 1993, is a method of exchanging
digital messages from an author to one
or more recipients. Email operates
across the Internet or other computer
networks.
An Internet email message consists of
three components, the
message envelope, the message header,
and the message body. The message
header contains control information,
including, minimally, an
originator's email address and one or
more recipient addresses. Usually
descriptive information is also added,
such as a subject header field and a
message submission date/time stamp.
14. 1) Information on almost every subject
imaginable.
2) Powerful search engines
3) Ability to do research from your home versus
research libraries.
4) Information at various levels of study.
Everything from scholarly articles to ones
directed at children.
15. 1) There is a lot of wrong information on the internet.
Anyone can post anything, and much of it is garbage.
2) There are predators that hang out on the internet waiting
to get unsuspecting people in dangerous situations.
3) Some people are getting addicted to the internet and thus
causing problems with their interactions of friends and
loved ones.
4) Pornography that can get in the hands of young children
too easily.
Disadvantages:
16. Surfing the internet can be an interest for people. But people need to use
it properly. If not, it will become internet addiction. Internet addiction
harmfulness is bigger than “TV addiction”. In deed internet addiction can
be called “a mental illness”.Playing online games reasonably can make
people happy on free time. People also can increase the relationships
between friends by rational use of network. Indisputably, network is a good
way to find the information. Then, buying something online is very
convenient. But doing anything need moderately. Otherwise it will be bad
for people. There are some way to treat the online addicition. people can go
outside to do some sport. Then people do not have energy to play
computer. Also, people spend time to chat with friends at real life. It is
good way to improve the friends relationship.
