I.U.C.N celebrating its 70 years
I.U.C.N Protected areas
I.U.C.N ( International union for the
conservation of nature and natural
resources).
• It was found in 1948 under auspices of U.N.O
• There are about 900 members spread over 133
countries.
• It encourage and assist the people to conserve the
integrity and diversity of nature.
• From time to time IUCN Brings updated RED LIST
(Red DATA BOOK) which contain a detail
•Information on the conservation status of every specie
in the world and identify the region or ecosystem in
which each specie lives.
Protected Areas
Define:
• An area of land /sea or specially dedicated to the
protection and maintenance of biological diversity
and of natural and associated cultural resources and
managed through legal and other offensive
measures.
The variuos categories of protected areas
as defined by IUCN In 1994.
• There are six categories of protected areas.
• A)Strick nature reserve
• B)Wilderness areas
• National parks
• Natural Monument
• Habitat/species management area
• Protected landscape/seascape
• Managed resources protected areas
1)a) Strick nature reserve: Are strickly protected areas
set aside to protect biodiversity and also possibly
geological features where human visitation ,use and
impacts are strickly controlled and limited to ensure
the protection of the conservation values.
2) b)Wilderness: Large area of unmodified or
slightly modified land or sea ,retaining its natural
character and influence ,without or permanent or
significant habitation which is protected to preserve its
natural condition.
2)National parks:An area of outstanding scenic and
natural interest where flora and fauna are protected
and presreve in their natural state. These are parks
open to public for recreation , research and education.
3)Natural Monument:Area containing one or more
natural or cultural feature which is of outstanding or
unique value because of its inherent rarity,
representative or cultural significance.
4)Habitat: Area of land or sea subject to active intervention
for management purposes so as to ensure the maintenance of
habitats and to meet the requirements of specific species.
5)Protected landscape/seascape: area of land with
coast and sea as appropriate ,where the interaction of
people and nature over time has produced an area of
distinct nature with significant aesthetic ,ecological and
cultural value and often have high biological diversity.
6)Managed Resource Protected area: Area containing
predominantly unmodified natural system ,managed to
ensure long term protection and maintenance of biological
diversity while providing at the same time a sustainable flow
of natural products and services to meet community needs.
In Pakistan, there are only three
categories of protected areas viz.
• NATIONAL PARKS, WILDLIFE SUNTURIES,
AND GAME RESERVES.
These represents 2,6 and 4 management categories
respectively.
