PHP was added to the languages offered by Google App Engine about a year ago. This session will focus on porting an existing app on gae. We’ll start talking about the main characteristics of the app engine platform, which kind of services are available (persistence, storage, queue and so on) and how to use it. Then the PHP installation of app engine will be discussed, highlighting implementation choices and limitations. The second part of the talk will go into implementation details, in particular about tweaks needed to run an existing app on gae e.g: how a session is managed, logging is performed and how to interact with the file system not forgetting about deploy.

When creating a mobile application, organisations have a few options to choose from; mobile web, native or a hybrid application. Where web apps are just websites that can be accessed on the internet via a mobile browser like Chrome or Safari, native apps are applications that are developed for a specific platform such as Android or iOS. Hybrid apps are different because they possess elements from native apps and web apps. When automating web applications, Selenium commands are used. Nine out of ten times the same automation script can be used for mobile web applications as our desktop web applications. With native apps however, we need to look deeper into the differences between Android and iOS apps before we can use Appium commands. But how should you automate hybrid apps, can or do you need to choose one of the two automation strategies or is there also a hybrid approach for automating hybrid apps? That’s what we are going to talk about during this webinar. We will be looking into how to detect a hybrid application for Android and iOS, the do’s and the don’ts when it comes to automating a hybrid application and we will provide you with tips and tricks on how to make this work for both Android and iOS. By the end of this webinar, you’ll be able to create your own Appium scripts to automate Android and iOS hybrid mobile applications. Key Takeaways: - Understand what a hybrid mobile application is - How to detect a hybrid mobile application - Learn how iOS and Android handle hybrid mobile applications - Learn how to automate hybrid mobile applications

Google App Engine enables large and small businesses alike to host and run their web-based applications on Google's highly scalable infrastructure -- Google takes care of the maintenance, load balancing, and other server-side management tasks so you can focus on building out the core functionality of your web app. On the other end of the spectrum, Google Web Toolkit (GWT) enables developers to create rich, AJAX-enabled, web applications using a familar language (Java) and environment (Eclipse), which then get compiled to optimized JavaScript. This presentation will open with an introduction to Google's Eclipse plugin and demonstrate how to create a new servlet-based Java web application and deploy it to the cloud within 30 seconds -- all without leaving Eclipse! I'll then shift into a deep dive of both GWT and App Engine, showing how both work, how much they cost (hint: free to start!), the various features and services included for both, and more, and there should be plenty of time for Q&A afterward. You don't have to be entrenched in the Web 2.0 world to gain insight from this session. GWT makes it easy for businesses that are just starting to move their applications into the cloud, while maintaining an advanced feature set for those that have been there for years, and App Engine makes it especially easy to get your apps up and running in a scalable fashion. Whether you're just starting to investigate web development and cloud hosting providers or you are already a seasoned pro with other solutions, this session is for you.

So you have spent the last few years building PHP applications but now the business requirements have changed and you need to provide a full featured REST API. You could invest time, money and energy building it yourself, but have a look at Apigility. This is a full REST management application build on ZF2 allows you to tap into your existing legacy PHP application and provide 100% REST endpoints to the outside world. In this talk I go over the challenges we had to deal with creating our own REST implementation, throwing it all away because we only had 20% of the features of Apigility and setting up and managing Apigiltiy using our existing legacy PHP application. After this talk you will get a good understanding how to use Apigility to manage your REST API̢

Syngulon’s technology expands the capacity for selection of microorganisms. The ability to select individual microbes with a behavior of interest is essential, whether for simple cloning at the bench, or for industry-scale production. Synthetic biology uses the concept of “bioengineering” to improve or modify existing genetic systems to create microbes with desired behaviors, and Syngulon uses this approach to develop its selection technologies. This selection technology is based on bacteriocins, ribosomally-produced peptides naturally made by most bacteria to kill competitive microbial species. These bacteriocins can have a limited or wide target range against other microbial species. This technology offers advantageous over antibiotic selection for several reasons: it avoids the use of antibiotics in the first place, helping to reduce the spread of antibiotic resistant microbes. The technology also increases product yield; as bacteriocins are generally smaller peptides, they do not impose a heavy metabolic burden on the producing cell. They can have a wide target specificity, helping to avoid genetic drift. Finally, our system is 100% plasmid-based (e.g. without chromosomal mutations), making it applicable for use in any E. coli strains.

Heather Hedden, Senior Consultant at Enterprise Knowledge, presented “Enterprise Knowledge Graphs: The Importance of Semantics” on May 9, 2024, at the annual Data Summit in Boston. In her presentation, Hedden describes the components of an enterprise knowledge graph and provides further insight into the semantic layer – or knowledge model – component, which includes an ontology and controlled vocabularies, such as taxonomies, for controlled metadata. While data experts tend to focus on the graph database components (RDF triple store or a label property graph), Hedden emphasizes they should not overlook the importance of the semantic layer.
