Capitol Records was founded in 1942 as the first West Coast-based record label in the United States by Johnny Mercer, Buddy DeSylva, and Glenn E. Wallichs. It was acquired by EMI in 1955 and later by Universal Music Group in 2012. Some of Capitol's current artists include Katy Perry, Sir Paul McCartney, and the Beach Boys. Its headquarters building in Hollywood, California is a circular landmark known for its earthquake resistance.
