Group Meme
Our meme is a photo of a UTA train running into a FedEx truck on January 21, 2017 in
Salt Lake City. The footage was released on January 24, 2017. Our event responds to
train wrecks or derailed trains. In this incident, the snow causes the system signals to
have a power outage and fail. While the power was out, the train proceeds without any
crossing/signal warnings. The FedEx truck drives completely into the racing train
splitting itself in half, the speed of both units impacted the collision causing a terrible
wreck. As you can see the FedEx truck was destroyed during the accident. No one was
severely injured and the account is under investigation.
I believe this is an awareness and wake up call for city officials to check on train devices
during cold/snowy/freezing temperatures. Fortunately, no one was injured. The only
damage was the truck and train. This accident could have been far more worse, and
should demonstrate a situation that needs awareness so that there’s a solution(s) in the
future. City officials and UTA agents need to come together to prevent such
catastrophes. There should be another control box that indicates when power is down
and a train is in motion. There should be backup generators at intersections where
traffic passes in case of an outage, and a way to monitor the equipment on our railway
system. If train signals and crossing bars have sensors and they become faulty, there
needs to be a monitoring company to come out and inspect.
My meme “when there is malfunction…there’s no stopping destruction” conforms to the
genre of the cities environment. It’s evident the weather conditions started the cause of
the accident. The power outage prevented the system from functioning properly, which
created this horrific accident. When anything malfunctions, you can always expect some

somethings go wrong. This picture is a perfect example of a destruction due to a
malfunction. It’s important that people see the negative affects so that they can focus
and create a prevention plan. City officials need to produce a more active role to stop
the absolute worst. Death does not need to occur before a solution is sought out. My
concern is for city officials to reflect and build on a better mechanism to our railroad
system, so fatalities and damages are eventually nonexistent.
