"Granito"
by Pamela Yartes
In 1982, filmmaker Pamela Yates traveled to Guatemala to make a film about the nation's ongoing civil war, with General Efrain Rios Montt's military
dictatorship on one side and a rebel army of farmers, intellectuals and indigenous Mayans on the other. Yartes stated that she has wanted to see these
people pay for their crimes. This documentary link Guatemala's blustery past and present. At the time Yates completed her film When "The Mountains
Tremble," the world was just becoming aware that Montt and his troops were engaging in genocide, determined to wipe out the Maya people one and
for all. However, she narrates the films about the search for evidence of Guatemala's genocide, much of it drawn from footage she filmed back in
1982. At least ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Moreover, Yartes made a strong connection with forensic scientists, lawyers, and the press. Yartes also explained that "Granito" is mostly about the
importance of human rights and not just as she is a filmmaker but it is going into all of the outtakes from 1982 to find evidence for the cases in
Guatemala. There was this guy named Freddy Peccerelli who've been finding and looking for scientific, forensic evidence, and also this lady named
Kate Doyle, which she went through secret military and police documents to find evidence, including evidence against Otto PГ©rez Molina another
man linked to the Plan SofГa which in seen in "Granito." Furthermore, the importance of this film was to document every step throughout the ongoing
genocide in Guatemala and how important this documentary could be to trial General Efrain Rios Montt. However, Freddy Peccerelli stated what has
happened in Guatemala is pretty much blanket impunity after the signing of the peace accords and people are afraid to talk because of the lack of
justice. To support this view, Freddy and his recruiter dug

Character Analysis Of Aura
Aura: Analysis & Response
Part A:
Carlos Fuentes' Aura is about a man named Felipe Montero who gets hired by an elderly woman named Consuelo Llorente to edit and review her
deceased husband's manuscripts. Later on in the story he is introduced to Sra. Llorente's niece, Aura, and instantly falls in love with her. As the story
goes on, strange events occur during Felipe's time there with the story concluding that Aura is the embodiment of Consuelo's young past life. Fuentes
uses imagery throughout the story which makes easier for the reader to have a better understanding of it. The images used give the reader
understanding of what is going on, reveals each character's identity, and what emotions they may feel throughout the story.
To begin, many of the images the author creates clarify to the reader what is going on in the story and what might happen next. In the beginning of
the story, Felipe discovers the newspaper advertisement and immediately heads over to the location the next day and gets the job to edit the
documents. After his first night staying in the Llorente home, Felipe hears a commotion outside of his bedroom. He looks out of his window and
notices something unusual in the trees. "[..] that square of yew trees and brambles where five, six, seven cats[...]are all twined together, all writhing in
flames and giving off a dense smoke that reeks of burnt fur" (Fuentes 840). This gives the reader the indication that Felipe has seen cats burning in
flames to death and

Is Justice Universal And Never Changing?
A question that pervades every modern culture when it comes to their system of justice is whether, "Is our justice based on an inalienable plane that
cannot be changed by humans or nature?" That is to say, is justice universal and never changing? For over two millennia since civilizations have
existed, civilizations have conveniently supported their justice system as universal through their religion. Thomas Hobbes will suggest an alternative to
this explanation of justice, that justice is not universal among all men, but it takes another element to decide what justice is. This would seem to
discount the thought of an universal justice that exists in everyday life. However, what arises is another question that needs to be answered, "Is there
universal justice in nature?" Nature being the plane of existence that everyone in this universe exists in. Nature is the stimuli and experiences that all
humans and creatures alike encounter in their life. If Hobbes is correct in saying that there is no universal law that dictates how man may live, is there
a law of nature that dictates how man may react to his surroundings? When that question is answered, Hobbes then throws another question that builds
off of that answer. If there does exist a universal law of justice in nature, then what is just and what is not just? While we may be satisfied in whatever
conclusion we draw, Hobbes throws a wrench into our satisfaction by stating that, "just and unjust have no place prior to the

Essay on The Death of Artemio Cruz
The Death of Artemio Cruz
Carlos Fuentes author of The Death of Artemio Cruz has used his novel to show how Mexico has been transformed and molded into its present state
through the use of his character Artemio Cruz. Fuentes uses Cruz to bring together a historical truth about the greedy capital seekers, robber barons, if
you will, who after the revolution brought Mexico directly back to into the situation it was in before and during the Revolution. Fuentes wrote the novel
in nineteen sixty–two, shortly after the Cuban Revolution. Fuentes is able to express his disappointment from the Mexican Revolution, the revolution by
the people in his native land. The revolution seemed to change nothing for the average person in Mexico; the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

He was revolutionary in the way he was able to use characters in his writings to disclose the big picture and history of his own home land, the
country of Mexico. Fuentes was able to reach out to people of all walks of life, his writings were eventually all translated, and he became known
worldwide. Fuentes wrote many controversial books, some of those were: Terra Nostra, The Campaign, The Old Gringo, Where the Air Is clear, The
Death of Artemio Cruz, The Good Conscience, The Orange Tree, etc. I believeCarlos Fuentes published nineteen books altogether, many of the
books seem to be almost chapters of one large novel; a novel that was an idea to bring information to the people, to help people think about things
outside of the box, the way he saw things. His work was very insightful and helped to show the struggle of Mexico throughout history and even to
the present day. Fuentes also wrote many essays of social protest and several short stories. He had a love of history, a desire to show the truth and
the want to enlighten people to believe in a better way of life, all of these things he was able to due in his writings. I believe he just wanted the
average person to understand how and why their economy, Government and their basic existence came to be. . . He was trying to reach the average
Mexican. I believe Fuentes basically blamed the people of Mexico for letting these things

Beatriz De La Fuente Colossal Heads
The Olmec built these gigantic freestanding sculptures known as Colossal Heads which were found in San Lorenzo, Veracruz. They are over two
meters long and weigh sixteen tons. They are also known simply as the Olmec heads. There are different interpretations as to why these heads were
built. I belief that the author of the article "Toward a Conception of Monumental Olmec Art," Beatriz de la Fuente, finds that the harmonic proportions
of the Olmec heads symbolize the cosmos. De la Fuente uses iconography to demonstrate why the Olmec heads were portraits of someone superior. In
the article, "The Portrait and the Mask: Invention and Translation," the author, Esther Pasztory, writes about the effect the Olmec heads have on the
viewer. Pasztory uses visual context to demonstrate how the heads were something people were, and still are, in awe of. ... Show more content on

The Olmec had a worldview and were in constant contact with nature and the supernatural, this is an example of how they were in harmony with the
cosmos. The Olmec wanted to express this in the Colossal heads. The way the heads are portrayed show that power exists not just in the outside
world but of the people who built them. Also, de la Fuente believes that the significance of the heads is more intricate than the heads appear; they
seem to have a universal appearance based on how perfectly harmonic they are. Another example where the heads symbolized the cosmos is when de la
Fuente explains the "golden mean" which is the harmony of the Olmec heads within themselves and how these heads were not primitive. The heads are
sculptures in–the–round and are balanced somewhere between the realistic and the abstract. They are realistic when they express themselves in human
form and abstract when they symbolically express themselves with the

America Is Not Universally Free Essay
America is not universally free. This is easily proven with examples from a variety of subjects. For example, take LGBT rights. De jure, gay
marriage is legal nationwide. But de facto, when one looks at the social reality dealt with by people who are not heterosexual, one finds that not
everyone has the realistic ability to do so. Even on a de jure level, there are the "bathroom bills," passed by North Carolina and looked at by many
states, designed to limit transgender people's ability to use the bathroom. But even if one deals with that, and all of the other issues of systematic
discrimination faced by modern America– race, class, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, etc.– on both a de jure and de facto level, America would
still not be universally free. What do I mean by this? Well, firstly I need to be entirely clear about what I mean by freedom. The Oxford English
Dictionary defines freedom as "the state or fact of being free from servitude, constraint, inhibition, etc.; liberty." This is true; however, any
reasonable person can determine that that does not even begin to cover what "freedom" really means. There is emotional value in the word that
simply cannot be captured by such a clinical definition. When I say freedom, what I really mean is the reasonable ability to make choices about
one's own actions and one's own life. This does not have to be free from consequence, but it has to be a reasonable possibility on a de facto level. What

Lastly, humans are posing a threat not only to the existence of different kinds of plants and animals, but also from humans to even farm animals and

The Old Gringo by Carlos Fuentes Essay
The Old Gringo by Carlos Fuentes
The Old Gringo is a fiction novel written by one of Latin America's most renowned and eloquent authors, Carlos Fuentes. Filled with war, adventure,
love and more, this novel takes you back to the Mexican revolution fought in 1912. This contemporary fiction is based on many themes found and
experienced by the main characters in this novel. The relationship between Mexico and the United States, the drive to find one's true self and the
different ways two men need a woman are only a few themes contained in this story. The question: Is he Ambrose Bierce or just anold gringo, is one
that I had to answer while reading this book. We all have different opinions, but it is a question that all ask... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The setting also influenced one of the major themes of the story, the historical relationship between the United States and Mexico. As you can see, the
setting of this novel was very important to everything included in this story.
The main characters in this story are Harriet Winslow, the old gringo, and Tomas Arroyo. Of the Three, Harriet learns the most as she starts her new
life as governess across the frontier. She is a dynamic character that changes in the story because of the things that happen around her. Other characters
include Manslavo, La Garduna, Frutos Garcia, La Luna and more. Carlos Fuentes did a very good job of describing these characters and paints a
picture, like all great authors, of the characters portrayed in their novels.
Most of the story revolves, however, not around the old gringo but the young gringa, Harriet Winslow. Harriet Winslow is a Yankee spinster, who
decides one day in 1912 to break loose from her humdrum life by taking a job as governess in Mexico. Once she arrives, she is immediately caught
in the middle of the Mexican revolution. Here, she meets the general, Tomas Arroyo, and the American author, the old gringo. Harriet is described as
a, 'quick, elegant, and a beautiful woman of thirty.'; In a discussion with Miss Harriet and the old gringo, we learn that her father disappeared in the
Spanish–American War somewhere in Cuba.

Symbolism in Fuentes' Aura Essay
On the surface, Fuentes' Aura is a very strange and eerie book. It draws you in and keeps you there, forcing you to read the book to its very end.
Just below the surface, a world of symbolism, words and parallels lead to a greater understanding of what is happening throughout this captivating
tale. Skimming the surface of the story, an abundance of symbols can be signaled out, but a recurrence of symbols is very important. One of the most
prevalent symbols found in this story is the darkness of Senora Consuelo's old colonial mansion. The house is so dark the characters must learn to
maneuver by sound and touch. The darkness sets the tone for the whole story. Senora Consuelo's room is not bathed in light but filled with "perpetual...

This association with the feminine energy may be why the smell patio plants remind him of Aura. The dining room usually corresponds to what one
is feeding the body, mind, or soul. Although the parlor, or living room, is only mentioned in passing, it is often associated with one?s current state of
mind or personal situation. The bedrooms have more obvious associations, as I am sure you can imagine. Sexual activity, intimacy, vulnerability,
passion, security, safety, comfort, and feelings of connectedness and or closeness all correspond to what one thinks of a bedroom. Bedrooms are very
personal rooms, and what is kept in them often reflects part of their character. The number three is seen numerous times throughout the story. Aura
can only stay for three days at a time. There are three parts to General Llorente?s memoirs. These three sections are each bound by a ribbon that is
one of the three primary colors. There are three types of animals roaming the house. Felipe eats three evening meals that consist of the same three
foods, liver, tomatoes, and onions. Felipe lights three matches when he goes looking for Aura in the dark patio. It is in the third photograph that Felipe
realizes he is the young General. So the number three seems to be a pretty important symbol if it is repeated so much throughout the story. The most

Politics & Cultures of Africa
Ever since British geologists first discovered diamonds in Sierra Leone 's jungles in the 1930 's, diamonds have been a key factor in the bloody conflict
that has ravaged this small West African country. In his novel, Blood Diamonds, Greg Campbell captures the heart wrenching story of one man 's
encounter with the Revolutionary United Front (RUF), a rebel group in Sierra Leone, infamous for their brutal tactics of mass rape, torture, looting,
and excruciations. But their signature and most documented form of persecution –– amputation:
Ismael Dalramy lost his hands in 1999 with two quick blows of an ax. He didn 'tВ—or couldn 'tВ—recall the pain of the blows. But he ... Show more

"The world 's biggest diamond mining and marketing company, De Beers Consolidated Mines of South Africa, announced in February 2000, that it will
no longer buy any diamonds sourced from a region controlled by an armed group opposed to the legitimate authority in a country"(http:/

and more than two–thirds of its already severely limited infrastructure destroyed. Meanwhile, the underground trade of illicit diamonds is booming.
Conflict diamonds are valued "between 4 percent and 15 percent of the world total" and generate annual trade revenues of $7.5 billion" (Johnson).
"According to De Beers 's, conflict diamonds are "minded or stolen by rebels who are in opposition to the legitimate government of a country"
(Campbell 127). "With this definition of "conflict diamonds", DeBeers has no only proved itself with linguistic maneuverability but trade
maneuverability as well. It is no secret that "the industry, after all, is bigger than the company alone and in fact is critical to the economies of at least
four nations." (Campbell 127) DeBeers has taken steps to ensure that some of their diamonds were conflict free with the demand for action so
apparent. DeBeers first step in the right direction resulted in a devastating blow to earnings, a net loss

Should Diamonds Cost so Much? Essay
Diamonds have long been considered some of the most prized and sought after possessions. They have been perceived as indicators of wealth and
romance. The diamond market however; has been one of the most controversial and controlled markets in history run by a cartel "...an association of
suppliers with the purpose of maintaining prices at a high level and restricting competition" (Oxford English dictionary) formed to prevent the market
from becoming flooded with diamonds from too many suppliers, resulting in a price drop.
This essay will argue for the statement that the price of diamonds is too high. It will analyse the diamond market as well as De Beers control over the
diamond market and explain how the diamond cartel managed to gain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Then in 1929 he gained control of De Beers and controlled virtually the whole of the South African diamond trade. (Spar,2006) The diamond syndicate
worked by limiting the supply of diamonds entering the market. Agreements were set up whereby distributors would buy their diamonds solely from
De Beers and would sell them in agreed–upon quantities at agreed upon prices .De Beers would then stockpile any excess of diamonds from the
mines. (Spar, 2006). Once Oppenheimer was in control, he introduced a new structure called the Central Selling Organization (CSO). As illustrated in
figure 1, ten times a year a handpicked group of dealers, known as "sightholders", would meet at the CSO warehouse in London to purchase diamonds.
The diamonds were sold at non–negotiable prices. Each sightholder received a different package determined by the quantity and type that De Beers
wanted to place in the market and what the sightholder wanted to sell in the coming weeks. There were mutual interests by all parties – keep the price
of diamonds high and maximize profits – and so the system worked. If a firm wanted to be independent from De Beers, they risked plummeting the
diamond price from over–supply in the market. (Kretschme,1998)
With De Beers controlling the quantity of diamonds entering the market, the price ,as well as controlling any surplus, De Beers

Breakdown Of The Legislative Process
Breakdown of the Legislative Process: In the current political climate in the Iowa Statehouse can be very toxic for bills that are novel and are
trying to push the envelope on issues. Currently, House is where these types of bills go to die. There is very little support for progressive legislation
in the House. With Republicans having a 57 to 43 Democratic margin in the House; it would be best to start the bill in the Senate. While margin of
the majority in the Senate is much closer, with 26 Democrats to 24 Republicans, it will not be easy to pass this bill in the Senate, but there passage has
much better odds. Because the Democrats hold the majority in the Senate, committee leaders are Democrats. If the bill is to have any chance at... Show

This means that passing a law that has environmental issues would be easier in the Senate than in the Republican controlled House. To get the bill
started we would need to persuade Dick Dearden, the Chair of the Natural Resources Committee. This would allow the bill to have as little attention
as possible, because Natural Resources tends to be a noncontroversial committee, where many issues are passed out of committee on unanimously.
Senator Dearden is also the perfect person for the job. He has seen the effects that regulation can have on the environment. In a conversation with
the Senator he said that when he was younger he had to clean off toilet paper off his fishing line when fishing in the Des Moines River. I believe
that he would support green infrastructure conservation issues such as this because he knows that water quality is a major issue in the state. Another
reason why Senator Dearden is the best starting place for this bill is because he is retiring, he won't have to face reelection in 2016. This means that
he can handle politically "hot" issues without any repercussions in the election cycle. The Natural Resources ranking member is Senator Ken
Rozenboom, and getting him to sign off on the bill will be more difficult because he is very conservative. This is where we are going

Fuente Ovejuna By Lope De Vega
The play, Fuente Ovejuna was written by Spanish playwright Lope de Vega. It was most likely written between 1612 and 1614 and was first
published in Madrid in 1619. The play is based on an actual historical event that took place in the village of Fuente Ovejuna, which is located North
West of CГіrdoba, in 1476. The play presents information on what life was like in the kingdom of Castile during the 15th century. Fuente Ovejuna is

The Cost Of Living By Carlos Fuentes
The Cost of Living
"The Cost of Living" by Carlos Fuentes, starts with Salvador Renteria and his wife Ana. Ana has been in bed for two weeks and is very ill.
Salvador comforts his wife while she is lying in bed. He tells her not to worry and that she will get better soon. Salvador shows his love for his wife
while she is sick. "She asked Salvador to check her messages at the office, he told her that the office wanted her to come in person to sign" (Fuentes
451). We can note from this that during this time period medicine wasn 't very advanced. When someone needed highly advanced medicine, it was
very expensive and rare to get.
A shopkeeper tells Salvador that "Life en Espanol hadn 't arrived yet" (Fuentes 452). Carlos Fuentes tells us this because he wants us to get the feel for
the setting of the story. This also can stereotype that the life in Mexico can prove to be economically difficult.
The story is focused in the mid–1950s during political corruptness. The setting is located in Mexico City, Mexico. Carlos Fuentes expresses this
because he wants us to get the feel for the setting of the story. This also can stereotype that the life in Spanish can be economical hard. I believe that
Carlos chose this time era because he wanted people to see how life was the back then compared to how it is today. The point of view takes us back
in time to where medical treatment wasn 't available, unlike today. Salvador leaves his house and is walking down the street when a young

Analysis of Greg Campbell's, Blood Diamonds
When one is on the other side of the earth, there is only so much information that a person could obtain. This was a great enough reason for the
author, Greg Campbell, of "Blood Diamonds" to expose what all eyes are not seeing and what many are blind to in this world. Campbell went out to
research the tracks and origins of a very valuable stone known as the diamond. In doing so, he urges to research the origins and life of this precious
rock. He goes about researching just exactly how the life of the diamond begins in the jungles of Sierra Leone and ends up in the London on its
market. This is what could be said to be the ultimate reason for this book "Blood Diamond". Evidently, Campbell wanted to expose or let it be known

All of us would find this topic in a way of inspirational because no matter what may be taking place, there can be an instant where the painful story
that's taking place would be told and because of this story being told, changes will be made. For instance, Campbell speaks of Ismail Dalramy who
lost his hands in 1996 by way of an ax. Amputation was one of many brutal tactics, as well as torture, mass rapes and looting done by the
Revolutionary United Front or the (RUF). This is only just a little taste of what the African had to undergo because of the sick diamond trade. But,
even so this helped bring light to what was wrong and helped more right to come out of. This book continued shedding light on the overworked but
underpaid Africans in the mines. A tourist once mentioned, "The pit looked more like a slave colony". "On all sides, rib–skinny men stripped to their
shorts were covered in mud and slime, the inevitable results of their jobs digging for diamonds". "Even though it was barely 10 a.m., they all looked
exhausted". This is needless to say extremely sad because there were Africans that were worked like crazy but barely getting paid, rest, or rewards.
Instead there is nothing but turmoil agony and pain.
Due to some Campbell's great compassion for what was going on in Africa, his book also shed light to how

The Old Gringo, by Carlos Fuen
The Old Gringo, Carlos Fuentes The Old Gringo is a fiction novel written by one of Latin America’s most renowned and eloquent authors,
Carlos Fuentes. Filled with war, adventure, love and more, this novel takes you back to the Mexican revolution fought in 1912. This contemporary
fiction is based on many themes found and experienced by the main characters in this novel. The relationship between Mexico and the United States,
the drive to find one’s true self and the different ways two men need a woman are only a few themes contained in this story. The question: Is

In this novel, Miss Harriet has an affair with Tomas Arroyo to savethe old gringo’s life. Supposedly, Arroyo claimed that he would kill the
gringo unless she slept with him. At the end of the story, Harriet despises Tomas Arroyo for everything he does and learns to love the old gringo as a
father. The old gringo is a very mysterious, adventure and death–seeking character. He comes to Mexico in search of death, hoping that he could just
die in the battlefield. We learn that he had his own family, but all were dead or wanted nothing to do with him. He was a bitter American journalist
who had made an abrupt break with his past and is riding into Mexico to join Pancho Villa’s revolutionary army. Clues suggest that if this
man were ever named he would prove to be Ambrose Bierce, an American journalist, who vanished from the United States into Mexico during
1913. In the end of this story, he is killed by Tomas Arroyo and is taken back into the U.S. to be buried in Miss Harriet’s father’s

William Golding 's Lord Of The Flies
"Crimes against humanity, as defined by the Rome Statue of the International Criminal Court, are particularly odious offenses in that they constitute a
serious attack on human dignity or grave humiliation or degradation of one or more human beings... part of a widespread or systematic practice...
tolerated or condoned by a government or a de facto authority." In the novel 'Lord of the Flies,' by William Golding, the idea of innate human savagery
is explored through the hostile behaviour of English schoolboys who have been stranded on a desolate island. Bullied by their leader, Jack, the violence
they unleash on each other constitutes crimes against humanity because Jack and his tribe were the de facto authority on the island, and conducted a
systematic hunting down of other boys.
Jack's position as leader of the stranded boys came about when the boys grew tired of Ralph's demands to remain disciplined and hard working. " 'I

Analysis Of ' Merchant Of Venice ' And ' Frankenstein '
Preconceptions
In both Merchant of Venice, by Shakespeare, and Frankenstein, by Mary Shelly, identities, prejudices, and judgements are constantly put to the test.
Shylock and Portia, who originally identify strongly with their Jewish ancestry are subject to prejudice and judgement, ultimately causing them to
change their concepts of identity to conform to society. Similarly, the Creature is judged for his physical appearance, causing him to grow angry when
he is exiled by society. Both novels seem to suggest that bias plays a role in determining the relationship between people, even when they have never
met before. These characters are judged, eventually shaping the way they will identify by the end of the novel, and largely forcing them to change the
very way they act and appear. For this reason, in both Merchant of Venice and Frankenstein, prejudice is used as a tool to stereotype and label people,
eventually causing them to conform and mold themselves to the norms set out for them by society. Many people are often judged because they are
different from the norms society has set for them, causing them to often be stereotyped into categories. This is especially true in the context of both
novels. Shylock experiences prejudice because he identifies as Jewish, and is often discriminated against, explaining how someone spat on him,
saying, "You call me misbeliever, cutthroat dog, And spat upon my Jewish gabardine, And all for use of that which is mine own" (1.3). He

An Analysis of the Movie, Blood Diamond Essay
The movie "Blood Diamond" was released in 2006 and featured Leonardo Di Caprio as an arms smuggler whose main goal is to obtain a seemingly
priceless diamond from a villager during the civil war in Sierra Leone. The film, although it has been called mild in comparison to reality, depicts the
brutality that inhabitants of diamond villages were subjected to. The film was nominated for five Academy Awards, and won numerous other awards.
The film marker is trying to raise awareness of the illicit conflict diamond trade and reinforcing the Kimberley process1 and showing how it will stem

He also is trying to show us that the people at Van De Kaap are not truly trying to solve the problem. Instead they are aggravating the situation. The
filmmaker aims to discourage racism and show that both blacks and whites can work together to solve various problems. In the movie, Danny Archer
had been forced to work together with Solomon Vandy, but they grew in terms of mutual understanding even though they had different purposes for
finding the diamond (Danny– profit, Solomon– to find family). From our research, cooperation among Africans is needed to effectively solve the
flow of conflict diamonds. An African Union was set up to speak on behalf of the African nations. Discouraging racism will always be important in
Singapore not only because the local population consists of many different races, but also because of the apparent pro–Bumiputra policies which have
drawn flak from some racial communities in Malaysia. Besides, the filmmaker wants to show how an ineffective government can lead to suffering of
its citizens. In the movie, Free Town4 fell into the hands of the RUF where many were killed and buildings were razed, due to the failure of the
government to effectively enforce security in the region. This is supported by one of the arguments from research stating that strong governments are
needed to effectively stem the flow of conflict diamonds out of Sierra Leone into Liberia. Relating to Singapore, the

Poverty In The Film Blood Diamond
Every nation has a responsibility to its citizens to improve the economic, political and social well–being of its people. However, in the film Blood
Diamond it is made clear that there is an exploitation of the people in Sierra Leone. This economic problem is fueled by three main concepts; poverty,
production/resources and demand/supply. Through the analysis of the three main concepts it will be shown how the economic problem was the result
of each sub–concept.
Poverty
In Blood Diamond we see examples of both the working poor–Solomon Vandy, and the absolute poor
– those living in utter destitution. Vandy worked
two jobs as a fisherman and a doorman, and even with two jobs, it can be seen by his living situation that he has to work very ... Show more content on

This then makes marine life unsuitable therefore eliminating another healthy food option for the many living in absolute poverty. The mining of
diamonds contributes to the poverty in Sierra Leone and makes it harder to escape it. The process of producing the diamonds so they could be sold on
the market involved many steps which were illustrated in the movie, Blood Diamond. Smugglers like Archer would supply the RUF with guns. The
guns would be used by the RUF to intimidate the people of Sierra Leone into working as laborers for them; we see this with Solomon and his son.
These men would be forced to dig in the water mines for hours a day searching for diamonds of all sizes. Then the diamonds are mixed with other
diamonds all around the world, mixing the illegal ones with the legal ones; this was explained in the movie by Archer to Maggie. When the
diamonds are mixed in with the others, no one can determine for certainty where each originated from. The export of the diamonds relies on how
well Sierra Leone's resources are to produce it and its resources are the laborers mining for the diamonds. More diamonds are exported out of the
country when there are more laborers mining for them. It is then distributed to nations where they are made into necklaces and bracelets, and no
questions are asked. We see clearly in the movie how the factors of production are used: land, labour, and entrepreneurship. Land is the resource where

El ГЃrtico Amenzado con el Deshielo
EL ГЃRTICO AMENAZADO
expulsan metano y diГіxido de carbono (gases de efecto invernadero).

Analysis Of Aura
Aura by Carlos Fuentes explores the ideas of fantasy and imagination against the backdrop of Mexico City in the 1960s, coinciding with the Latin
American Boom. This was a time of literary experimentation as the Latin American novel gained increasing popularity amongst wider audiences. As
such, Fuentes uses Aura to redefine narrative norms by incorporating genuine historical events into fantastical situations and through the use of
symbolism to heighten the feelings of the uncanny and the unknown which linger throughout the novel.
Fuentes spent much of his own childhood in other countries, imagining his native country rather than experiencing it for himself. On his return to
Mexico, he faced a reality much different to what he had expected from his dreams and preconceptions. At the time, the country was in the midst of
'El Milagro Mexicano', in which Mexico was going through a significant period of economic growth and social reforms. As a result, much of the
population chose to move to the now industrialised cities in place of rural towns. This historical evidence is evident from the outset of Aura, as even
though the population was growing in modern Mexican cities, this also created a feeling of isolation and a loss of community amongst the large crowds.
By way of illustration, Fuentes' descriptions of Mexico City are generally basic and lacking in any expressive or idiomatic language. The protagonist,
Felipe Montero, does not pay any particular attention to the details of

Francis Bacon 's En Dublin, Irlanda En 1909
Francis Bacon
Ese mismo aГ±o empezГі a dibujar y

There was this guy named Freddy Peccerelli who've been finding and looking for scientific, forensic evidence, and also this lady named Kate Doyle, which she went through secret military and police documents to find evidence, including evidence against Otto PГ©rez Molina another man linked to the Plan SofГa which in seen in "Granito." Furthermore, the importance of this film was to document every step throughout the ongoing genocide in Guatemala and how important this documentary could be to trial General Efrain Rios Montt. • 10. Is Justice Universal And Never Changing? A question that pervades every modern culture when it comes to their system of justice is whether, "Is our justice based on an inalienable plane that cannot be changed by humans or nature?" That is to say, is justice universal and never changing? For over two millennia since civilizations have existed, civilizations have conveniently supported their justice system as universal through their religion. Thomas Hobbes will suggest an alternative to this explanation of justice, that justice is not universal among all men, but it takes another element to decide what justice is. This would seem to discount the thought of an universal justice that exists in everyday life. However, what arises is another question that needs to be answered, "Is there universal justice in nature?" Nature being the plane of existence that everyone in this universe exists in. Nature is the stimuli and experiences that all humans and creatures alike encounter in their life. If Hobbes is correct in saying that there is no universal law that dictates how man may live, is there a law of nature that dictates how man may react to his surroundings? When that question is answered, Hobbes then throws another question that builds off of that answer. If there does exist a universal law of justice in nature, then what is just and what is not just? While we may be satisfied in whatever conclusion we draw, Hobbes throws a wrench into our satisfaction by stating that, "just and unjust have no place prior to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Essay on The Death of Artemio Cruz The Death of Artemio Cruz Carlos Fuentes author of The Death of Artemio Cruz has used his novel to show how Mexico has been transformed and molded into its present state through the use of his character Artemio Cruz. Fuentes uses Cruz to bring together a historical truth about the greedy capital seekers, robber barons, if you will, who after the revolution brought Mexico directly back to into the situation it was in before and during the Revolution. Fuentes wrote the novel in nineteen sixty–two, shortly after the Cuban Revolution. Fuentes wrote many controversial books, some of those were: Terra Nostra, The Campaign, The Old Gringo, Where the Air Is clear, The Death of Artemio Cruz, The Good Conscience, The Orange Tree, etc. I believeCarlos Fuentes published nineteen books altogether, many of the books seem to be almost chapters of one large novel; a novel that was an idea to bring information to the people, to help people think about things outside of the box, the way he saw things. His work was very insightful and helped to show the struggle of Mexico throughout history and even to the present day. Fuentes also wrote many essays of social protest and several short stories. He had a love of history, a desire to show the truth and the want to enlighten people to believe in a better way of life, all of these things he was able to due in his writings. I believe he just wanted the average person to understand how and why their economy, Government and their basic existence came to be. . . He was trying to reach the average Mexican. They are over two meters long and weigh sixteen tons. They are also known simply as the Olmec heads. There are different interpretations as to why these heads were built. I belief that the author of the article "Toward a Conception of Monumental Olmec Art," Beatriz de la Fuente, finds that the harmonic proportions of the Olmec heads symbolize the cosmos. De la Fuente uses iconography to demonstrate why the Olmec heads were portraits of someone superior. In the article, "The Portrait and the Mask: Invention and Translation," the author, Esther Pasztory, writes about the effect the Olmec heads have on the viewer. Pasztory uses visual context to demonstrate how the heads were something people were, and still are, in awe of. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Olmec had a worldview and were in constant contact with nature and the supernatural, this is an example of how they were in harmony with the cosmos. The Olmec wanted to express this in the Colossal heads. The way the heads are portrayed show that power exists not just in the outside world but of the people who built them. Also, de la Fuente believes that the significance of the heads is more intricate than the heads appear; they seem to have a universal appearance based on how perfectly harmonic they are. Another example where the heads symbolized the cosmos is when de la Fuente explains the "golden mean" which is the harmony of the Olmec heads within themselves and how these heads were not primitive. The heads are sculptures in–the–round and are balanced somewhere between the realistic and the abstract. They are realistic when they express themselves in human form and abstract when they symbolically express themselves with the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 18. America Is Not Universally Free Essay America is not universally free. This is easily proven with examples from a variety of subjects. For example, take LGBT rights. De jure, gay marriage is legal nationwide. But de facto, when one looks at the social reality dealt with by people who are not heterosexual, one finds that not everyone has the realistic ability to do so. Even on a de jure level, there are the "bathroom bills," passed by North Carolina and looked at by many states, designed to limit transgender people's ability to use the bathroom. But even if one deals with that, and all of the other issues of systematic discrimination faced by modern America– race, class, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, etc.– on both a de jure and de facto level, America would still not be universally free. What do I mean by this? Well, firstly I need to be entirely clear about what I mean by freedom. The Oxford English Dictionary defines freedom as "the state or fact of being free from servitude, constraint, inhibition, etc.; liberty." This is true; however, any reasonable person can determine that that does not even begin to cover what "freedom" really means. There is emotional value in the word that simply cannot be captured by such a clinical definition. When I say freedom, what I really mean is the reasonable ability to make choices about one's own actions and one's own life. This does not have to be free from consequence, but it has to be a reasonable possibility on a de facto level. What exactly a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As you can see, the setting of this novel was very important to everything included in this story. The main characters in this story are Harriet Winslow, the old gringo, and Tomas Arroyo. Of the Three, Harriet learns the most as she starts her new life as governess across the frontier. She is a dynamic character that changes in the story because of the things that happen around her. Other characters include Manslavo, La Garduna, Frutos Garcia, La Luna and more. Carlos Fuentes did a very good job of describing these characters and paints a picture, like all great authors, of the characters portrayed in their novels. Most of the story revolves, however, not around the old gringo but the young gringa, Harriet Winslow. Harriet Winslow is a Yankee spinster, who decides one day in 1912 to break loose from her humdrum life by taking a job as governess in Mexico. Once she arrives, she is immediately caught in the middle of the Mexican revolution. Here, she meets the general, Tomas Arroyo, and the American author, the old gringo. Just below the surface, a world of symbolism, words and parallels lead to a greater understanding of what is happening throughout this captivating tale. Skimming the surface of the story, an abundance of symbols can be signaled out, but a recurrence of symbols is very important. One of the most prevalent symbols found in this story is the darkness of Senora Consuelo's old colonial mansion. The house is so dark the characters must learn to maneuver by sound and touch. The bedrooms have more obvious associations, as I am sure you can imagine. Sexual activity, intimacy, vulnerability, passion, security, safety, comfort, and feelings of connectedness and or closeness all correspond to what one thinks of a bedroom. Bedrooms are very personal rooms, and what is kept in them often reflects part of their character. The number three is seen numerous times throughout the story. There are three types of animals roaming the house. Felipe eats three evening meals that consist of the same three foods, liver, tomatoes, and onions. Felipe lights three matches when he goes looking for Aura in the dark patio. It is in the third photograph that Felipe realizes he is the young General. • 29. Should Diamonds Cost so Much? Essay Diamonds have long been considered some of the most prized and sought after possessions. They have been perceived as indicators of wealth and romance. The diamond market however; has been one of the most controversial and controlled markets in history run by a cartel "...an association of suppliers with the purpose of maintaining prices at a high level and restricting competition" (Oxford English dictionary) formed to prevent the market from becoming flooded with diamonds from too many suppliers, resulting in a price drop. This essay will argue for the statement that the price of diamonds is too high. It will analyse the diamond market as well as De Beers control over the diamond market and explain how the diamond cartel managed to gain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Then in 1929 he gained control of De Beers and controlled virtually the whole of the South African diamond trade. (Spar,2006) The diamond syndicate worked by limiting the supply of diamonds entering the market. Agreements were set up whereby distributors would buy their diamonds solely from De Beers and would sell them in agreed–upon quantities at agreed upon prices .De Beers would then stockpile any excess of diamonds from the mines. (Spar, 2006). Once Oppenheimer was in control, he introduced a new structure called the Central Selling Organization (CSO). As illustrated in figure 1, ten times a year a handpicked group of dealers, known as "sightholders", would meet at the CSO warehouse in London to purchase diamonds. The diamonds were sold at non–negotiable prices. Each sightholder received a different package determined by the quantity and type that De Beers wanted to place in the market and what the sightholder wanted to sell in the coming weeks. There were mutual interests by all parties – keep the price of diamonds high and maximize profits – and so the system worked. If a firm wanted to be independent from De Beers, they risked plummeting the diamond price from over–supply in the market. Breakdown Of The Legislative Process Breakdown of the Legislative Process: In the current political climate in the Iowa Statehouse can be very toxic for bills that are novel and are trying to push the envelope on issues. Currently, House is where these types of bills go to die. There is very little support for progressive legislation in the House. With Republicans having a 57 to 43 Democratic margin in the House; it would be best to start the bill in the Senate. While margin of the majority in the Senate is much closer, with 26 Democrats to 24 Republicans, it will not be easy to pass this bill in the Senate, but there passage has much better odds. This means that passing a law that has environmental issues would be easier in the Senate than in the Republican controlled House. To get the bill started we would need to persuade Dick Dearden, the Chair of the Natural Resources Committee. This would allow the bill to have as little attention as possible, because Natural Resources tends to be a noncontroversial committee, where many issues are passed out of committee on unanimously. Senator Dearden is also the perfect person for the job. He has seen the effects that regulation can have on the environment. In a conversation with the Senator he said that when he was younger he had to clean off toilet paper off his fishing line when fishing in the Des Moines River. I believe that he would support green infrastructure conservation issues such as this because he knows that water quality is a major issue in the state. Another reason why Senator Dearden is the best starting place for this bill is because he is retiring, he won't have to face reelection in 2016. This means that he can handle politically "hot" issues without any repercussions in the election cycle. The Natural Resources ranking member is Senator Ken Rozenboom, and getting him to sign off on the bill will be more difficult because he is very conservative. This is where we are going ... Ana has been in bed for two weeks and is very ill. Salvador comforts his wife while she is lying in bed. He tells her not to worry and that she will get better soon. Salvador shows his love for his wife while she is sick. "She asked Salvador to check her messages at the office, he told her that the office wanted her to come in person to sign" (Fuentes 451). We can note from this that during this time period medicine wasn 't very advanced. When someone needed highly advanced medicine, it was very expensive and rare to get. A shopkeeper tells Salvador that "Life en Espanol hadn 't arrived yet" (Fuentes 452). Carlos Fuentes tells us this because he wants us to get the feel for the setting of the story. This also can stereotype that the life in Mexico can prove to be economically difficult. The story is focused in the mid–1950s during political corruptness. The setting is located in Mexico City, Mexico. Carlos Fuentes expresses this because he wants us to get the feel for the setting of the story. This also can stereotype that the life in Spanish can be economical hard. This was a great enough reason for the author, Greg Campbell, of "Blood Diamonds" to expose what all eyes are not seeing and what many are blind to in this world. Campbell went out to research the tracks and origins of a very valuable stone known as the diamond. In doing so, he urges to research the origins and life of this precious rock. He goes about researching just exactly how the life of the diamond begins in the jungles of Sierra Leone and ends up in the London on its market. For instance, Campbell speaks of Ismail Dalramy who lost his hands in 1996 by way of an ax. Amputation was one of many brutal tactics, as well as torture, mass rapes and looting done by the Revolutionary United Front or the (RUF). This is only just a little taste of what the African had to undergo because of the sick diamond trade. But, even so this helped bring light to what was wrong and helped more right to come out of. This book continued shedding light on the overworked but underpaid Africans in the mines. A tourist once mentioned, "The pit looked more like a slave colony". "On all sides, rib–skinny men stripped to their shorts were covered in mud and slime, the inevitable results of their jobs digging for diamonds". "Even though it was barely 10 a.m., they all looked exhausted". Filled with war, adventure, love and more, this novel takes you back to the Mexican revolution fought in 1912. This contemporary fiction is based on many themes found and experienced by the main characters in this novel. The relationship between Mexico and the United States, the drive to find one’s true self and the different ways two men need a woman are only a few themes contained in this story. The old gringo is a very mysterious, adventure and death–seeking character. He comes to Mexico in search of death, hoping that he could just die in the battlefield. We learn that he had his own family, but all were dead or wanted nothing to do with him. He was a bitter American journalist who had made an abrupt break with his past and is riding into Mexico to join Pancho Villa’s revolutionary army. Clues suggest that if this man were ever named he would prove to be Ambrose Bierce, an American journalist, who vanished from the United States into Mexico during 1913. In the novel 'Lord of the Flies,' by William Golding, the idea of innate human savagery is explored through the hostile behaviour of English schoolboys who have been stranded on a desolate island. Bullied by their leader, Jack, the violence they unleash on each other constitutes crimes against humanity because Jack and his tribe were the de facto authority on the island, and conducted a systematic hunting down of other boys. Jack's position as leader of the stranded boys came about when the boys grew tired of Ralph's demands to remain disciplined and hard working. " 'I ought to be chief,' said Jack with simple arrogance, 'because I'm chapter chorister and head boy. I can sing C sharp." (P. 18) The boys just wanted to have fun. • 40. Analysis Of ' Merchant Of Venice ' And ' Frankenstein ' Preconceptions In both Merchant of Venice, by Shakespeare, and Frankenstein, by Mary Shelly, identities, prejudices, and judgements are constantly put to the test. Shylock and Portia, who originally identify strongly with their Jewish ancestry are subject to prejudice and judgement, ultimately causing them to change their concepts of identity to conform to society. Similarly, the Creature is judged for his physical appearance, causing him to grow angry when he is exiled by society. Both novels seem to suggest that bias plays a role in determining the relationship between people, even when they have never met before. These characters are judged, eventually shaping the way they will identify by the end of the novel, and largely forcing them to change the very way they act and appear. For this reason, in both Merchant of Venice and Frankenstein, prejudice is used as a tool to stereotype and label people, eventually causing them to conform and mold themselves to the norms set out for them by society. Many people are often judged because they are different from the norms society has set for them, causing them to often be stereotyped into categories. This is especially true in the context of both novels. Shylock experiences prejudice because he identifies as Jewish, and is often discriminated against, explaining how someone spat on him, saying, "You call me misbeliever, cutthroat dog, And spat upon my Jewish gabardine, And all for use of that which is mine own" (1.3). He also is trying to show us that the people at Van De Kaap are not truly trying to solve the problem. Instead they are aggravating the situation. In the movie, Danny Archer had been forced to work together with Solomon Vandy, but they grew in terms of mutual understanding even though they had different purposes for finding the diamond (Danny– profit, Solomon– to find family). From our research, cooperation among Africans is needed to effectively solve the flow of conflict diamonds. An African Union was set up to speak on behalf of the African nations. Discouraging racism will always be important in Singapore not only because the local population consists of many different races, but also because of the apparent pro–Bumiputra policies which have drawn flak from some racial communities in Malaysia. Besides, the filmmaker wants to show how an ineffective government can lead to suffering of its citizens. In the movie, Free Town4 fell into the hands of the RUF where many were killed and buildings were razed, due to the failure of the government to effectively enforce security in the region. However, in the film Blood Diamond it is made clear that there is an exploitation of the people in Sierra Leone. This economic problem is fueled by three main concepts; poverty, production/resources and demand/supply. Through the analysis of the three main concepts it will be shown how the economic problem was the result of each sub–concept. Poverty In Blood Diamond we see examples of both the working poor–Solomon Vandy, and the absolute poor – those living in utter destitution. This then makes marine life unsuitable therefore eliminating another healthy food option for the many living in absolute poverty. The mining of diamonds contributes to the poverty in Sierra Leone and makes it harder to escape it. The process of producing the diamonds so they could be sold on the market involved many steps which were illustrated in the movie, Blood Diamond. Smugglers like Archer would supply the RUF with guns. The guns would be used by the RUF to intimidate the people of Sierra Leone into working as laborers for them; we see this with Solomon and his son. These men would be forced to dig in the water mines for hours a day searching for diamonds of all sizes. Then the diamonds are mixed with other diamonds all around the world, mixing the illegal ones with the legal ones; this was explained in the movie by Archer to Maggie. When the diamonds are mixed in with the others, no one can determine for certainty where each originated from. The export of the diamonds relies on how well Sierra Leone's resources are to produce it and its resources are the laborers mining for the diamonds. More diamonds are exported out of the country when there are more laborers mining for them. It is then distributed to nations where they are made into necklaces and bracelets, and no questions are asked. We see clearly in the movie how the factors of production are used: land, labour, and entrepreneurship. Land is the resource where diamonds are found, and in Blood Diamond we ... • 45. Analysis Of Aura Aura by Carlos Fuentes explores the ideas of fantasy and imagination against the backdrop of Mexico City in the 1960s, coinciding with the Latin American Boom. This was a time of literary experimentation as the Latin American novel gained increasing popularity amongst wider audiences. As such, Fuentes uses Aura to redefine narrative norms by incorporating genuine historical events into fantastical situations and through the use of symbolism to heighten the feelings of the uncanny and the unknown which linger throughout the novel. Fuentes spent much of his own childhood in other countries, imagining his native country rather than experiencing it for himself. On his return to Mexico, he faced a reality much different to what he had expected from his dreams and preconceptions. At the time, the country was in the midst of 'El Milagro Mexicano', in which Mexico was going through a significant period of economic growth and social reforms. As a result, much of the population chose to move to the now industrialised cities in place of rural towns. This historical evidence is evident from the outset of Aura, as even though the population was growing in modern Mexican cities, this also created a feeling of isolation and a loss of community amongst the large crowds. By way of illustration, Fuentes' descriptions of Mexico City are generally basic and lacking in any expressive or idiomatic language.
